They signed with Virgin in debt because their fans were mostly working class, looking for ways round buying music so they could go to the gigs in a time where the $ was made from sales of singles and records, touring promoted the records and the margins were razor thin. They were making music that, when I stand back and think about it was so ahead of its time, especially for 5 boys in their early 20's and the records just weren't selling. When you sign with a label and ur in debt, you'll agree to some things you work out in your mind won't be too bad, "We have creative control but we agree to such and such appearances...yeah we'll be lipsyncing but that's the way of it, at least we have creative control." It's a business where the artists rarely call the shots at the time, especially when ur in debt. At least they didn't sell their souls like many others.....stay tuned for that one. Respectfully disagree if you'll bear with me. Most will agree they found their "sound" on NGD where they were being accused of sounding too much like their influences like Magazine, Kraftwerk. Fair enough. What happened after SAF/SFC? Brian's departure as the cycle was not for him. Enter Mel after Mike demonstrated some issues in the studio. Bruce asked him to give it a go, pretty organic to me. He brings a different style and a crash they've not heard. They also were noticing the NGD material wasn't capturing the festival audiences they found themselves in front of and Jim, God Bless him was trying very hard to fill the space. Here was a band that was putting on amazing shows but not selling albums which is a problem since it is a business when all is said and done. They were clocked to work with Alex Sadkin but scheduling issues opened the door for Lillywhite who was known for capturing a live band sound. When you hear the excellent demos for SITR you could see that things were changing in the band, not writing songs around the bass riffs and that movie soundtrack sound with added vocals and Lillywhite cracked it open, helping them to sound more like a band than what NGD had. It's what they wanted, they were well aware of impending criticisms of drafting off of NGD, maybe it's fair to say they avoided it too much? I love SITR BTW, many others did as well as it hit #1. Not all popular music is bad. Forsey and Hughes wanted them and they refused but Forsey won them over, that was a great thing. DYFAM is a good song and they made it better. I don't think it was a contrived move to sell records, the pressures were there admittedly but they had Alive and Kicking, Ghostdancing brewing in their labs already. They were listening to U2, Springsteen, Mellencamp and hearing the big sound that appealed to them and got the album they wanted. They were always putting out what they were taking in, those great Big Country albums, War, Psychedelic Furs, Bowie.....why try and still sound "like Germans"? Look at the circles Jim found himself in when he married Chrissie, they were pretty much activists talking about world events, just natural for those things to be on Jim's mind. I for one am happy they got to be heard by so many more people, I thought it was tragic that those early albums didn't sell. At least they got another look. They were too good not to be heard and they had a great run. What happened happened and they're still finding there's a passion and I'm over the moon about it.

I loved the sound of the John Mellencamp, Bowie, Pretenders albums of the time. I love OUAT, it holds up so well today cos it just sounds amazing. I love Direction of the Heart, it was always Jim and Charlie then who wanted to make the records with them. As much as I would have given for the 5 who made NGD-DYFAM (yes, sacking Derek was a mistake and Mel spoke to the inability to stick together) to have stuck it out, they've had a run most musicians can only dream about. I got to talk with Jim and Charlie some during the Walk Between Worlds tour and it was like talking to two brothers. Their enthusiasm for what they were doing really won me over. Apologies for the opus, just passionate about the subject. Best.
