Nobody seems to have remarked that Mr. Fröst is playing on a basset clarinet, the instrument for which Mozart indeed wrote his "clarinet" concerto. The basset clarinet is longer and can play lower than the modern clarinet and there are several passages in this concerto where usual renditions are transposed up by one octave. It is rare but nice to hear the "original", as Mozart wrote it. My father was a clarinetist who loved Mozart and I remember he telling us about the "rediscovery" of the original instrument for which the concerto was written. Dad passed away last year, at the ripe age of 95. He was still playing... Have a kind thought for him.

@@bernardpoulin5254 Eh non mon cher ami. J'ai bien écrit clarinette de basset. La clarinette de basset a été, en quelque sorte, un bref intermédiaire entre le chalumeau et la clarinette moderne. Son registre descend une tierce plus bas (je crois) que la clarinette en la, et c'est bel et bien pour cet instrument que, comme je l'écrivais, Mozart a écrit son concerto pour clarinette. Si vous connaissez ce concerto assez bien (ou si vous en avez une partition moderne), une écoute attentive de cette vidéo (ou de divers autres enregistrements; j'en ai un excellent de 1996 - peut-être le tout premier sur une clarinette de basset - avec Eric Hoeprich, un ami de mon feu père) révèlera les passages en bas registre, injouables sur la clarinette moderne (par exemple, très clair à 5:55, et encore entre 12:00 et 12:30, je crois; vers 21:45 et 23:40 aussi, et plusieurs autres.).
Cet Instrument est inconnu du grand public, et ma confusion est venielle.

I have run out of words of praise for Yuja. This Shostakovich just rocks to the max, as if he'd swallowed all his giant Russian predecessors and a few Harlem stride pianists as well.
Wonderful performance of Shostokovich's Concerto. Yuga's hands were flying over the keyboards due to the music of composer's era. Performance for 4 hands brilliant. Like Yuga's facial expressions. Enjoying every minute of playing.

What a perfect showing of the joy of music making; the sheer pleasure of all concerned a triumph, from the soloists, the happy band, Lahav, concertmaster - great in the Beethoven.
With my decent set-up, it's only just behind being there, nothing could beat that, but to watch Yuja's expressions as she plays is as close to heaven as I'll ever get. 😊❤️😊

Mozart's Clarinet concerto is sadly beautiful. He composed this work while he was struggling with his life. You could hear that sadness in this piece. The 2nd movement is just breathtaking.
Martin is absolutely brilliant. Incredible control over the instrument and fantastic sound only he is able to deliver. Bravissimo!
And you, @yujawang, have an uncanny sense for the mysterious extraordinary. This is a CRAZY composition. You got to admit that.

Martin Frösts playing in this is wonderful. On his basset clarinet he shapes all the magic, and probably more magic than Mozarts friend Anton Stadler shaped at his time, playing this for the first time. Some years have passed, this music is still always new.
Spectacular! Martin Fröst's enthusiasm and divine clarinet, and Yuja Wang's amazing fingers and passion, together with the whole orchestra - every string and the trumpet - it was all brilliant!
This orchestra has a clean sound. The soloist is a showman and everything looks perfect.
What an exquisite and exciting concert, one of the most enjoyable on TH-cam! I don't know how Frost pulled off the Mozart so beautifully with an extension splint on his finger. I hope he recovers completely. I'll have to research the Tsinandali Festival. I had never heard of it. They obviously know how to attract good talent.

Martin F. is like dancing with the Clarinet. Or, is he conducting with rest of his body? Beautiful and memorable concert. I, an early Baby Boomer, never imagined Georgia (where Stalin came from?) could host such a high quality cultural event in my life time. I wish I could see such events become more popular, appreciated and enjoyed by all people on this (sick) planet before it is too late.

Divine Mozart, a lyrical and piquant performance by Martin. Shostakovich? Mmm. His music disturbs me most times-I can't get a handle on it at all. I felt Yuja made that peculiar instrumental combination and the music most accessible for me on that day. The Beethoven was reliably and entertainingly performed throughout. Thank you all.

He's Chris Scanlon, a well-known trumpet artist and educator. He currently is an Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Northern Illinois University.

Yes, indeed, beautiful playing by Martin Fröst. On the recording you have is the clarinetist playing on a basset clarinet like Mr. Fröst does here? There are a few, I have one with Eric Hoeprich, but most are with modern instruments. The modern clarinet is shorter than the basset clarinet, the instrument for which Mozart wrote his "clarinet" concerto, and cannot reach some of the lower notes Mozart wrote so those are usually transposed one octave up.

When introducing a concerto for piano, trumpet and string orchestra, I personally feel that naming the trumpeter as well as the pianist is appropriate. Chris Scanlon is not a big name, but some might like to know who the trumpeter is who, in my view, did a very workmanlike job.
He is fantastic!!!!!!
Even worse, Tim, was that Yuja did not even acknowledge him when she took her bows! Just walked out straight past him. Equally, he was badly positioned because Yuja could not see him when they were performing - so there was no element of inter-play, of love-making (which i think Shostakovitch intended).
@@michaelpatterson5811 At 57:26 Yuja applauds the trumpet player, Chris Scanlon, and he stands up. And, love-making!?... That smash chord at 54:01, which Wang once played with her right butt cheek during a New Year's Eve concert in 2016 with Shani conducting in Isreal, was meant to be a resounding "NO!" from the piano directed at the trumpet after a concerto-long "battle" between the two instruments.

Highly entertaining and interesting concert in the Republic of Georgia! Martin Frost on the clarinet, with one finger in a splint! Yuja Wang doing a duet on the piano with Lahav Shani (the orchestral conductor), side by side (at about 59:00). My questions on that are: Where is the dividing line on the keyboard?! And, Are they flirting?!

Take note, recording engineer: Piano was overwhelming in the sound field, not just principal. The trumpet was away in the woods somewhere. Admirable a virtuoso Yuja is, she got carried away at times. I've observed her play this concerto less spastically in the past. 😟

What a wonderful concert, thank you for posting! Frost was terrific on the beautiful Mozart piece, a favorite of mine as a former clarinet player. Yuja as always plays and looks amazing. I loved the encore 4 hands with the conductor (is that Shani?). Were they flirting, or is that just enjoying the spirited music? No need for a conductor on the Beethoven, this ensemble appears very comfortable playing and moving together.
The four hands was terrible, tons of mistakes, rushed, not together, to forget.
The ensemble have been playing together for some time now. They are the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra.

Probablement décidé à ls dernière minute. ar exemple, à 1:01:10, Yuja fait la reprise alors que Shani continuait, un signe évident qu'ils n'avaient pas répété ensemble, peut-être lu une fois, peut-être même pas. Nous savons tous de quoi Mlle Wang est capable. Quand même pas mal dans les circonsctances, et tout à fait agréable à entendre et à voir l'interaction entre les deux. À mon avis en tous cas.
@@LouFerl oui le festival était dense, Yuja y a joué plusieurs concerts, une jam session mémorable, a fait les vendanges au berceau du vin. en tout cas je l'ai vue jouer ce 4 mains au moins 2 fois de très belle manière, avec Khatia Buniatishvili et avec Andras Schiff, elle était loin de le découvrir. D'après l'expression de leurs visages, elle semble plus s'amuser, tandis que lui se concentre davantage.

Tsinandali is in Georgia, the Georgia to the south of Russia, between the Black and Caspian seas. But what the piano duet was I don't know . . . sounded kind of Brahmsian?

Two world-class concertos from this 2019 Festival in Georgia - spookily linked on this video by the 3 note descending opening of 'Nature Boy' (Martin Frost's encore) being echoed in the viscious opening of the Shostakovitch concerto . . . and also the delight of the absence of a conductor in both the Mozart and the Beethoven pieces.
What's so delightful in not having a conductor in Mozart's and Beethoven's pieces? Please, explain. By the way: didn't you realize that Martin Frost was also conducting...?
Delighted to explain! I have to presume that you are not a musician - because of course I did realise that Martin Frost was also conducting. That was the Mozart piece i referred to. To understand my delight, you have to identify two basic musical things. 1] Conductors, as we know them today, didn't really exist before the 1800's (Beethoven died in 1827). Before that, the 'leader' (the violinist that 'lead' the orchestra) did just that. It was the growth in size of the musical concepts, and the orchestra required to play this music that generated the need for someone to keep them all together, and 'shape' the music - Brahms, Bruckner, Mahler etc. 2] The bands in Mozart's time were much smaller, so played more as a 'chamber' group. In this wonderful concert you must note that the band are all very physical - moving with their playing rather than just sitting up straight, not listening much to each other. Indeed, the woodwind and brass (French Horns) are all standing, at the back, better able to move. Everyone listens to each other, plays as one. And when there is a soloist under this concept, there is never any duel between them and the band. Does that help you? @@namenlos2578

I was expecting to read exactly what you wrote, because I immediately understood what you meant with your **** comment. Who cares if there is or there is not a conductor, when the music is well played and interpreted? Philology in music is a property of fundamentalists, which I despise. I listen to music, that's all: I am not distracted by the presence/absence of a conductor, by checking whether a player is sitting or standing etc. I prefer good interpretations of a Mozart piece by an orchestra with a conductor, than bad interpretations by a correctly sized orchestra with standing instrumentalists without a conductor. Try to focus on what matters!
@@michaelpatterson5811 PS: would you suggest that, during the performance of 18th century operas nowadays, singers should be allowed to improvise, the public should be allowed to talk and eat, castrati should still be singing, etc etc? You have to be consistent...

She always drives the orchestra in a concerto! So you just can't say it's "too fast" - you are hearing her 'take' on it. It's her privilege.

To my "taste" the dynamic balance between the orchestra over shadows soloist.
This may have to do with do with micing. I see mics set up all over the orchestra, but not a dedicated mic on Frost.
I have my own preferences in this regard, as musicians are used to dealing with balance issues themselves, and not relying on sound engineers to do that for them.
But even so, why would they have mics for each of the orchestral stands and none for the soloist.

Rhapsody in Blue is out of this planet. Plenty of piano solos. Arrangement is different. And tempo slightly slower. Unique in style. Clarinet Solo at first..almost speaks to you. Don't know if same person Frost viewers talk a out here??
