She was still so young here ~ 21 or 22 yo. So beautiful to see the child looking out and then losing herself to the music to become the Maestra that she is. I feel I understand the true depth of her talent whilst watching this performance.
Yuja Wang is an astonishing talent. Memorising and playing at this level with a unique style is truly extraordinary and shows what discipline and hard work together with the right energy and yes innate talent can achieve. That she is also fit and beautiful and has such brilliant dress sense is the icing on the cake and, together with her brilliant playing, is winning millions of younger fans not only for her playing but for classical music more broadly which is also hugely significant.
It cracks me up that just because she's attractive people hate her. Stop it. She's bad ass and worked hard to get her musical skill and to keep herself fit.
Even at that age the explosive power combined with breathtaking delicacy - notes barely played falling like tiny fragments of a crystal chandelier. Incredible!

Well, I admit to being a total devotee of Ms Wang. But watching and listening to this work after some of her more recent videos, its immediately apparent how explosive her entry to the concert world was! Sublime!

Wonderful young firecracker that she is, I cannot imagine how many long hours of effort and practice have gone into honing this brilliant technique. The third movement in particular is not for the faint hearted!!! Well done Yuja, and thank you.
Fascinating, hypnotising. The sound of paradise. Purity. I did not know this piano concerto and I feel it is a total privilege to have such an interpreter.
I am listening and watching this recording since years and over and over again. It never ceases to amaze me though I would think it must have lost its attraciveness because of that, but, as records are, Yuja is playing this piece again and again with relentles virtuosity and an amazing truthfulness in her emotional attitude ... and innocence. So, again, it amazes me... and I'm smiling again and again about this masterpiece of this Berliner genius Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy.
The heading says " 153,334 views Jul 31, 2021 ". The next line says "Verbier Festival, Salle Médran. Verbier Festival Orchestra conducted by Kurt Masur Jul 31 2009". I believe she was 22 in this performance. The first movement was indicated as "Molto allegro con fuoco ". This is the best age a musician displays his/her pyrotechnics. Love to see her playing like this, innocent yet with fire. Maestro Masur also played with Sarah Chang in NY the Mendelssohn violin concerto in 1995. Chang was at the age of 15, also an unforgettable performance. Both Wang and Chang would look at the Maestro with the same glances from time to time: for guidance and with respect.
What a riveting performance! Great music, great conductor and orchestra, and superb pianist. In addition to the numerous superlative qualities already noted, Ms. Wang exudes an almost palpable sense of joy in practicing her craft. Bravo!

There is a video showing her from Age 9 playing all the way up to age 33. She's a prodigy, she was meant to play the piano and its just incredible to hear her play as young as 9 years old. She was playing a piece that adults would struggle with.
That video of her playing Debussy at age 9 is amazing. Not just the technique but more so the maturity, delicacy & sensitivity. She makes the piano sing and she's only 9 ! We are all lucky that she has continued to develop and become the celebrated performer she is today.

The sensitive, never over-done expressions on her young beautiful face are only a side effect of her performance but add so much conviction and charm. Superstar lightning brilliance of her playing is something to witness. Mendelssohn wrote this several years before Schumann or Brahms wrote their piano concertos, but it seems the later composers knew this work well.
I think criticism is alright if constructive. For example. I would say occasionally she plays a little on the technically showy side as if playing Paganini on the piano in the first movement.

Berlioz has a wonderful passage about a piano haveing a nervous breakdown over being played so fast so often in Mendelssohn's own day with this concerto, so it seems to me it can bear Yuja's approach. I myself prefer it to the overly heavy handed chord and key banging play it can also receive. To each his own...
I agree with you. I have watched and listened to Yuja Wang perform 8 different piano concertos. Those who criticize are self-absorbed critics who tend to enjoy their own words rather than the performance of this astonishing virtuoso pianist.

Brilliant pianist. I’ve seen her live twice, most recently this past spring in New York. On a non-musical note, I’ll say that I prefer her with her current hair length. And I don’t apologize for being concisions of her looks or sartorial choices. They hardly compromise her playing or our appreciation of it. In other words, just try listening to one of her Cds. You’ll be transported.
Yuja's a huge talent. Mendelssohn was a huger talent. She shows such a great regard to his talent as a composer. I'm hoping Mendelssohn's enjoying this performance from heaven, because the performance is truly heavenly.

This is one of Yuja's earliest performances. She burst onto the classical scene like a tornado, and you knew at once what was inevitably in store for the future. A truly ingenius talent for the ages.
Early Yujah. This piece suits her talents perfectly, and you can see why she has gone on to make such an impact. The commercial interruptions to this video are offensive. Interrupting a classical piece right in the middle is about as irritating as it gets. Such advertisers may be doing themselves harm, by their utter disregard of their audience.

It’s very unusual these days for performers to compose. In a music college performers study performing and composers study composing. Why cross over ?
