Righteous, my brother rented this when I was a kid. I thought it was aight. I actually didn't know about the show beforehand.
Regardless of the writing, the voice acting in this game can be so good that seeing clips of it it's hard to imagine it not being good.
For some reason the fact that 'Piss Boy' didnt wash his hands before punching you in the face made me legitimately upset.

@@Rinksiderips I am pretty new to the series (I first watched the Sopranos all the way through earlier this year) but I completely agree on your point about prequels. The Sopranos is also such a nuanced show that capitalized on great acting, writing, and slow buildups in both Tony's family life and his mob family drama. A movie adaptation just seems wrong by principle. They should leave the show and it's legacy alone since people like Minimme and myself are proof that it is still just as fantastic and engaging as when it came out.

The quirky bits in GTA work because that series is a parody of the US that doesn't take itself super seriously for the most part, whereas The Sopranos is not a parody but a hard-hitting drama. Why they thought of adding a giant dildo as a weapon to a Sopranos game is simply baffling.
well the show pokes fun at the weird overly macho side of people that affects their judgement heavily and makes them act like careless assholes, so having those same people incredibly affected by this way of thinking fight around with giant dildos is just funny and kind of works.

@@Skiivin Dark comedy does not equal parody. For example, Fargo is a dark comedy crime drama, but it is not a parody. Many absurd and funny things may happen, but it isn't poking fun at other, similar crime stories. The Sopranos kinda falls into the same category in some ways; it may have a shitload of darkly comedic elements, but that does not automatically make it a parody.
It might not suit the series but it kinda suits the game, it's a game that doesn't take himself seriously, the situations the main character gets in are ridicolously over the top, not in a saints row kind of way but still

It feels like a sandbox game where they forgot to put in the driving sections. But this is the early '00s, TV licenses everywhere, Lost, 24, Buffy, Alias Etc. (not to mention a shit load of ones based on BBC kids shows)

@@Larry The only gripe I have with the game is how the helicopter behaved on one level. They paid attention to small details like moving cables but couldn't animate a proper helicopter, for some reason.
I think it would be better if it was more like Yakuza

Watched The Sopranos just 2 years ago and I definitely agree that they put an effort to capture the places in details and not just quickly throw in environments to make a quick buck

They need to remake this game with same voice recordings and story, just with better gameplay like Mafia 2 and Sleeping Dogs.
And with pump n dump phone call minigame where you pick the right dialogue to sell Webistics. If you fail, Sean pours coffee on you and beat you up.

For 2002 the photorealism was super good, especially since that this looked as good, if not better than vice city. I know vice city was an enormous game at the time, but still, it was impressive.
This video spoke to me on a physical level... Should probably watch the show now.

It was the only video game I could play because it required no reaction time or critical thinking whatsoever! I remember that too. I found it difficult & I particularly remember the game glitching out on a certain stage & whenever I loaded it up again it would always freeze on the same level. So I never did get to complete it but I weren't that stressed about it either.
I literally came from that review to see this one.
I beg you man, bring us the Batman Begins tie-in game, it's an absolute gem of the stealth genre worth of being rediscovered!

i beat this game on a rental back in the day and honestly i really liked it but i am a huge fan of The Sopranos, gabagool,and 3D Beat Em Ups (Final Fight Streetwise and Beatdown Fists Of Vengeance are two of the best games of all time imo) and the amount of detail that they went into in the actual sets and things from the show was great to see as a fan

I bought & played this. I got to the part where I became a 'made guy' & thought "here we go, this game should get more interesting now" only to discover that was actually the end of tge game. LOL It took me only a few hours to complete it, I felt very shortchanged. If you want a good mob game that gives you your money's worth in gameplay then The Godfather game was a lot better.

I really appreciate all the time and effort you put into these tie in games. I often feel like you put in more time then these devs. I was wondering if you had ever played Bolt. The Disney movie based game. I've never played it. But I remember no one reviewed it very negatively. Thought it might be up your alley.
I bought this game a few days ago on my nostalgia kick or replaying old titles I never played, especially after recently watching the entire sopranos series it feels like a fun little interactive storyline. Yes it has its flaws, and the combat takes a lot of getting used to (avoid shooting at all costs and always go straight for weapon pickups) but all in all I’m having a blast playing it in 2023
The best way to play this game is by munching on a bowl of Gabagool while doing so .

Great review, but i have to ask you - what parts of the show did you find "slow and mundane"? Those two words are the last thing i would describe the Sopranos. Except maybe the dream sequences.

In my version of a Sopranos video game, I would’ve hired the writers of Assassin’s Creed II and Sly 2: Band of Thieves; both writing teams created charming and brutal characters; both games as well payed respects to the atmospheres of the game with cool environments and places to explore.
Gameplay-wise, would’ve hired the game directors of Scarface: The World is Yours, Grand Theft Auto IV, Bully, The Warriors and Sleeping Dogs as producers, terrific fighting sequences, rag doll physics, driving mechanics, etc.
Leslie Benzies would be the game director since he was involved with every GTA since GTA 3 up until GTA 5.
In a perfect world, I would use Criterion Games’ old RenderWare engine and MotionScan (technology used for the facial animation of L.A. Noire, later to be enhanced to include body animation with the cancelled Whore of the Orient).

I didn't have many games when I was a kid and I've beaten this countless times. I absolutely fucking loved this game. I wouldn't try to watch the series until 12-13 years later. PS2 cut scenes were amazing.
