Very profound interview. Kudos to Joe Rogan. I found the decision Marcus made to re-engage in the combat world to be likely therapeutic. He says "I had to". Whatever drove him to re-engage in Iraq I feel like probably saved his sanity and did not allow the horror he lived in Afghanistan to consume him. Seems like maybe the re-engagement in Iraq allowed the Afghanistan experience to become somewhat of an experience along a bit of a continuum as opposed to an event that destroyed his ability to cope - at least for him. @@cem5470 David is just on a different level mentally after what he's gone through in life. I'm sure you've heard he's got a book, and it talks a lot about it. That dude was abused to a really sad level and went through the ringer his entire life. He passed the physical screening portion of Delta's OTC, including the long walk, and if I'm not mistaken he obliterated the record on that long walk. He failed the psychological screening portion of it due to his sort of lone wolf mentality and his inability to jive with Delta's social dynamic. SOFREP has several articles on personal stories by some Unit operators and a few of them include some level of fraternal and racist banter (all in good fun) and they sort of revealed that (intentionally) during the screening. The lone wolf mentality definitely plagued him during his time with the teams too - just didn't click nor did he even want to. David is an absolute machine and unique specimen - a great example of what can be done with the power of the mind.
I have a brother was a seal done 8 years came home it’s been 15 years this year since anyone has seen him he came home and went off the deep end 😢what’s back he was always my hero since I could remember
What a lot of people don't realize is that while becoming a SEAL is extremely difficult, a big guy like Marcus (6' 5" 230 lbs) making it through BUDS is extraordinary.
Exactly. A lot of my buddies are buds duds (guys that got dropped from buds) and they’re all around 6ft. It makes all the workouts harder especially doing boat crew when the guy in the middle of the group is 5’7 5’8 and is barely touching the boat cause all the tall guys are carrying it
So true. From my experience, but from a potentially skewed memory because it's been several years, SF guys are pretty short in general. Not all, but a lot of them. I remembered when they (generally SEALs or Delta Force) would show up to the aircraft and being on the shorter side. I imagine having a lower center of gravity offers tremendous benefits being in that line of work. Some bad dudes though.
@@malachismith3475 at BUDS they put the boat crews together so the short guys go to a crew of short guys ...they don't have tall guys with a short guy in the same boat crew....they call the short guys "smurfs"......ive listened to many stories about the boat carrying at buds and I dont believe your story is correct.....
I guess ya'll know his brother was a Seal too. As teenagers they knew a retired navy seal and he helped train them as teens. Eanting to be a Seal is one thing, getting thru seal school quite another. Hats off to their family for their gift to our country! Nothing but love to all who wore the uniform!
You can see the levels of anxiety rise by the look on his face and the sound of his voice. I don’t know how he does it, talking about this stuff like he does. It’s probably therapeutic to a certain extent but also very painful.
My dad is dealing with terminal cancer and having been a karate teacher and black belt in his day, he's always been insanely good with dealing with pain. You wouldn't know he was gonna be dead in the next 0-5 years because he is able to tell himself it doesn't hurt and actually stop it hurting him physically as much. Man's a beast.
Wow, just wow! I was supposed to train EOD out of high school. Long story short I finished basic and came home. My whole life turned upside down and I don’t think I’ve truly recovered still. This makes me want to really change my life! Thanks you you two real men! 🙏
I read your book way before the movie came out. And when I'm having a down day, I think about what you went thru and it gives me strength to keep moving forward.
I give him much respect for the service that he did for his country in combat. But if the movie depicted him correctly and he refused to go with the rest and neutralize those three captives they had he caused the death of many Navy Seals. The three seals that were with him on the mission and the many that were in the Chinook helicopter that were hit with a RPG. In my opinion it showed he had no stomach to do what was needed
They never looked down on me.... dude that’s so sad he thought his brothers would have any kind of judgement for what he had been through. I’ve seen a lot of his videos before and he says you know I got my ass kicked lost my weapon which was cowardly... and it’s like dude your team was in such a bad spot and you guys all did what you could but you can tell he’s upset still with what happened and he has survivors remorse but still it breaks my heart thinking that he was afraid other seals would look down on him.
I got to hear him tell his story live at an event a few years back where he was the surprise guest speaker. It changed my life. He criticized himself the whole time and talked about how its not fair he’s here and they are gone. Check out lone survivor and his other book called service. This man stared the taliban in the face and told them to cut his head off “come on let’s go” were his exact words. He’s a legend and I hope people keep supporting him and don’t forget his story.
I was a firefighter in the Air Force and the ball breaking we did on each other was gruesome and frankly it was bullying. I can only imagine what he was afraid of.
I just want to thank you for this, its inspirational. I'm a healthcare worker who had covid and now was just diagnosed with cancer this past Thursday and still going through tests to stage me. For me it wasn’t the firefights it was that build up to it and it stayed with me. I’ve been out since 2013 and I still do it. I read the book about a year after I got back. I survived Afghanistan and ended up getting hospitalized for a shoulder injury back home. So I was on light duty and I read this book and by the end of it I was openly crying about it while I was at work. It was the same thing when I read In the Company of Heroes by Mike Durant. That kind of thing changed my view on things like this. When I went and saw Lone Survivor I went during the day when there wouldn’t be a lot of people because I had being surrounded by idiots who’d rather be on their -Hines than watch the movie. I watched it and my wife could tell I was tense. She grabbed my hand and the rest of the movie played out and at the end when they’re showing all of the guys who didn’t make it I sobbed and this Vietnam Vet came up to me and put his arm around me and we stood there for a minute and then I went on. It’s weird how you change.
Litterally the amount of thrill he speaks with and moments of pause just shows how much he truly loved what he did, but also knows he doesn’t want anyone else to experience the things he has.

''pain is a matter of perspective'', thats a good quote. something i realized early as a kid and i have probably never cried because of pain since i were around 8 years old.
That's something my uncle always told me as a little kid. Pain is just in your head. How you deal with it is up to you. One uncle broke his thumb.. played football on offense and defense for months without realizing it was broken.. My other uncle (former marine) had knee pain for a while.. he does hardwood floors so it made sense.. works out twice a day in his 50s as well. After months of tests.. They realized his hip had been shattered for almost a year. He just complained about pain in his knee like it wasn't that big of a deal. It's true. Learning to manage pain is all mental.

I am from India and I have huge respect for Navy seals. Every time I watch their video I learn something new. What I have learned the most is that it’s all about your mentality not your physical limitations. The conversation about getting hit with the first punch and then getting into “let’s do this” mode is so true - whether it’s a fight, a job interview or sports it applies everywhere. Training matters everywhere!
The Indian military doesn't have a version of the seals? If not it would be cool to see them start one and train with our seals. I know the other parts of the Indian military trains with us. Always good to see our allies training with us. Stay safe over there in India. Respect from America. I plan to visit India eventually
Him being in Ramdi is hilarious, he was pushed out quietly, he never left country again after he ran from his first OP. Hes lucky the navy got embarrassed enough they had to cover the story because he could have been charged for desertion.
That does make sense depending on the mos. My company was in TQ in '06 doing route clearance and went to Ramadi a few times to clear there and back or do woodframe construction there. A lot of us turned down a $50k bonus to stay in the combat engineer field for another four years
It makes sense psychologically speaking - you get used to your environment and what happens inside of that environment. Also, believe it or not, some people love fighting other human beings. And killing them en masse as well.

It makes all the workouts harder especially doing boat crew when the guy in the middle of the group is 5’7 5’8 and is barely touching the boat cause all the tall guys are carrying it
I can only imagine all of the challenges in BUD/s, but at 6'3, my limited experience as "the tall guy" during simple log PT was brutal.

I was in Afghanistan in 2004 and it changes everything about who you are. That muscle memory never leaves you. I find that I’m hyperaware of everything around me. @@omardevonlittle3817 I'm aware of that, people of all makes, models and creeds died, due to a lie concocted by Governments. I'm just saying, when it's about the people, they are not accountable, it's our Governments that create wars and conflicts for their own greed, however the men and women of both sides will continue doing the job they are paid to do. Peace ✌️

JOE thank you for keeping these stories alive!!!!
“Out here in Texas if you get your butt whipped you go back in for more when you get healed up” - that Texan pride. Had to educate Joe
🥵
Joe can handle himself. He hasn't spent his life in an office.

Texas isn't as "Texas" as Texas thinks it is...

Hope your aspirations come true.
Hell yea bro respect from the US 🇮🇳 🤝 🇺🇸
The Indian military doesn't have a version of the seals? If not it would be cool to see them start one and train with our seals. I know the other parts of the Indian military trains with us. Always good to see our allies training with us. Stay safe over there in India. Respect from America. I plan to visit India eventually

@@briancrawford69 we do have a elite group like the seals but its not that famous
Him being in Ramdi is hilarious, he was pushed out quietly, he never left country again after he ran from his first OP. Hes lucky the navy got embarrassed enough they had to cover the story because he could have been charged for desertion.
What a great story, thank you for sharing ! Thank you for your service and sacrifice 🙏💜
“I don’t get battle weakened, I get battle hardened” that is such an amazing mindset
Yeah anyone would be hardened after lying about running away from his brothers and letting them die.
It just makes more sense to be back in combat after leaving combat. It doesn’t make any sense, but it makes sense.
That does make sense depending on the mos. My company was in TQ in '06 doing route clearance and went to Ramadi a few times to clear there and back or do woodframe construction there. A lot of us turned down a $50k bonus to stay in the combat engineer field for another four years
Vengeance
It makes sense psychologically speaking - you get used to your environment and what happens inside of that environment. Also, believe it or not, some people love fighting other human beings. And killing them en masse as well.
The Devil you know....
Charlie out there in the bush getting stronger and I'm sitting in here getting weaker
