    I got mine about three weeks ago. I love it. It makes you work for the shot, and sometimes I had some great shots, sometimes I didn't (but it wasn't the lens). It lives in my camera

    This is really nice lens, and last time I remember there are versions with electronic exposure control for Canon cameras-so automatic aperture.
    I use it fully manual and it is easier than it sounds even at wide open. With A7R focus peaking on, I can usually focus quick enough for most street shots. Because it's 35mm, the focus depth is not as shallow as longer lenses-more forgiving for MF.
    When doing moving subjects, I use 2~4 aperture with slightly lower shutter or higher ISO. All in all, easy lens for MF and really nice quality.

    Looking for a 35mm for the EOS 5 with FP4. Off the top of my head and on a bright day like today, using Sunny 16, I'd be using a shutter speed of 1/8000 @ f2 (don't shoot me if my maths are way off). Even though there isn't a diopter on the EOS 5 I prefer manual focus when using film, I just have to remember to keep my glasses on. Thank you Christopher, this will be my fourth lens following your recommendations and you haven't let me down once.

    Very nice review. Helpful indeed.
    Seems to be an excellent performer in almost all regards.
    Only weakness seems to be that the bokeh balls sometimes have the iris reflected in them. I've noticed that in several Samyang's.

    Hi Christopher, I have heard of 2 possible solutions to help with the manual focus only issue.
    1) Magic Lantern Zoom focus
    2) Installing an aftermarket AE confirm chip, which seems as easy as gluing it in.
    I have yet to see anyone demonstrate these solutions for the sam yang lens, perhaps at some point you could look into this for future reviews. I, like many others, have not jumped on the Samyang/Rokinon lenses becuase of this, as autofocus is very important to me. However, if the aforementioned solutions allow for getting a majority of the shots in correct focus with or without a tripod and fiddling with live view I would no doubt buy almost their entire range, as the optical quality is really outstanding at its price and in some cases at any price. Thanks again Christopher, I love your reviews!

    I've had the very same lens for about 4 month on my canon 60D and I find it extremely hard to get the right focus at low "f" stops such as 1.4 (with this particular lens only). I am not put off by the challenge of using a full manual lens I always shoot on Manual, but on the go I get 1 shot out of 10 with correct focus. whenever I shoot low light portrait 1 out 15-20 images are having the focus I intended (at f 1.4). whoever wants to buy this lens, I strongly advice to take this into consideration. I may have lack of skills, but after 3 years of photography it is a big challenge for me to shoot with this lens at f 1.4, unless I use a tripod or digitally zoom in x8-x10 to focus.

    Chris could you answer a Question, I've just brought this lens on Amazoy for 200 pounds new! yeah good deal, but its a four thirds lens mount, I want to put this onto a (Micro four thirds body) Panasonic GH2, will a 43 to M43 adapter bring the quality of the lens down by much and will it also increase the what would normally be on M43 a 70mm lens by much? would the adapter change it to say a 100mm lens. Thanks for all the Great vids Chris.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes - any lens's images will look a little clearer and sharper on an 18mp sensor rather than 20mp. But, of course, you are exchanging that for 2mp of resolution!

    I wish you could have done the Review using the version with the AE chip built in, That one doesn't have an aperture ring. Although optically i imagine can't be much different. I'm Currently torn between the Sigma 35 1.4 art and the Samyang 35mm 1.4 AE, How close would you put those 2 against each other in regards to IQ only? The sigs AF is a plus but not a deal breaker for me if the IQ is the same or just slightly better.

    • @mavfan1
      @mavfan1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      both will work fine for landscapes. However, if you're shooting outdoors in the daylight you really don't need F1.4. Of course there are always exceptions, like if you want to take landscape/star trail combo photos, but since you (usually) want all of a landscape photo to be in focuse you'll be shooting a lot more in the F5.6 F8 or higher aperture so you should probably consider the 14mm F2.8. You'll get a wider field of view and since you'll be shooting over 2.8 anyway you won't miss the F1.4.

    • @OldSchoolFilm1930
      @OldSchoolFilm1930 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      These lenses are NOT the same!
      35 mm f-Stop is a photagrophy lense while 35 mm T-Stop is a film lense. The difference simply said is: f-Stop measures the amount of light that can ENTER the lense while t-Stop measures the amount of light that passed THROUGH the lense. So f/1.4 in t-stops is more like f/1.6. The Canon 85mm f/1.2 has a t-value of 1.4.

    Thanks for the review! Just wondering, do i need a converter from this lens to canon?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mohd Aqqashah Nope! Not if you buy the correct Canon version. Samyang even make sure the focus ring turns the 'Canon' way around.

      Mohd Aqqashah Hey. If you have/buy one for Nikon, simply buy a Nikon to EOS adapter with AF confirmation chip. Then you have the flexibility of using this lens on Nikon and Canon DSLRs. And of course, with the bonus AF confirm feature.

    Hi Christopher, can you review this one please? Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC Lens for Canon EF (AE Chip) I have the Rokinon ds cine 35mm but want a 35mm photo lens with focus confirmation and the ability to set aperture through the camera. Thanks so much!

    Dude, one question.. Do you know if i can fit a samyang 35mm for olympus into my EosRebel T5i (700D),since according what I know that lens is micro 3/4 and I think there should be like a mounting adapter, thank you in advance!

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Samyang 35mm? You mean, the f/1.2 lens? That's a lens for mirrorless cameras. It will not work properly on a digital SLR camera under any circumstances

    • @TheJudge064
      @TheJudge064 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could've done it the other way around, but a m4/3 lens won't work on a DSLR unless you're willing to get working in your garages

  • @sebbyseb20
    @sebbyseb20 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Chris, you often use nice manual Samsung lenses which are only manual focus. I know you say they are easy to focus with live view, but how about directly through the view finder; I'm on an old 5D which lacks any live view function and I do not wish to change to a manual focus style focus screen..

    • @sebbyseb20

      I may do one day. But from what I hear it's basically the same as the 85mm 1.8, only a touch sharper, and of course the very slightly different max. aperture and focal length

    • @92OnTV
      @92OnTV 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, this lenses are pretty similar, but again on youtube I didn't find that compering,
      also much less said about the 100mm f/2.
      P.S. Once again thank you for your work, we really appreciate it. I never get tired of saying this :)

    Just wondering, will this lens be good for landscape together with my canon70d? or will it be more like the 50mm? :/

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +DeadPlayersGame It would be alright. For landscape work it's often good to work with a zoom lens for flexibility.

    • @JunoBanuno
      @JunoBanuno 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for reply! :) I have a tamron 18-200mm which works fine for me as a zoom lens, I really love my 8mm fisheye from samyang and would actually just prefer samyang lenses in the future. Looking into getting both the 35mm f/1.4 and the 24mm f/1.4

  • @HeinrichLAURENT

    Does this lens work for the Sony A7 ? I'm confused because it's written E-mount and not FE-mount

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's actually no such thing as an 'FE-mount'. It's just one E-mount, with 'FE' lenses as a designator for full-frame compatibility

  • @nicolaim7061
    @nicolaim7061 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    How do you attach the 35mm to a canon 70d? I thought the Samyang 35mm is full frame so not compatible with it...

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      An APS-C camera can use APS-C or full frame lenses

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the lens you're talking about has an E-Mount adaptor built-in. You won't be able to use it at all

    • @usernamenotvisibIe
      @usernamenotvisibIe 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ChecoKicks if you still own it, I have a FourThirds mount on my Rokinon 35mm 1.4 and have to use an adapter for it to fit my a6000. I'd gladly trade you. All you would need is a FourThirds to Canon converter for about $20 or such from eBay or Amazon. Let me know.

    Do focus peaking works if lens is fully manual? like this lens.

    • @Thirsty_Fox
      @Thirsty_Fox 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On Sony it does. I leave it on all the time and it makes manual focusing much quicker. I use it to very quickly get quite close to perfect focus, then tap the focus zoom button in to really get it spot on if I need to.

    Does the lens have AF chip? And can it be used in Aperture mode? I am looking to buy this for my Canon m3, do you recommend it? Thanks!!

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You won't get AF confirmation on a Canon EOS M3 - you'll just have to focus in live view mode. Yes, all lenses can be used effectively in Av mode

    • @bhovland94
      @bhovland94 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. Do you recommend it for photography on the M3? Or is it too heavy to carry around?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's up to you, really - you'll get great pictures but it'll be quite big to carry around, and of course, you'll need the EF to EF-M adaptor, too

    • @bhovland94
      @bhovland94 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hm, I am struggling to pick between this and the 50mm 1.2. They both come with the ef-m mount now, so no adapter is needed.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe the new Samyang 35mm f/1.2 would be a good pick - that's a new, small, mirrorless lens.
