    Chris, I picked up this lens off Amazon. Samyang 35mm 1.2 My copy is fabulous. It's heavy but beautiful. Its body and focus ring is EXACTLY like the 50mm and 85mm. All 3 lenses are identical except for the focal length. My lens doesn't have the red ring or text. Thank you for your review!! Love it! • @brandishwar
    @brandishwar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I wonder if the contrast and color fringing issues you're seeing is just the nature of the beast when it comes to having apertures that side open. I think to have zero lost contrast or distortion would require absolutely pristine glass, especially when you're talking about the pixel densities on your two cameras, which would raise the cost substantially over it's 800 USD price point.

    As always great review!
    I bought this wonderful lens and use it on my a7s 1 & 2 for Astrophotography, ... I don't notice softness or chromatic aberration at all?...even wide open, where it's super sharp and full of contrast
    ..it might be you've had a bad copy?
    I mean, I even use it 'wide open' for Milky Way panoramic stitching. ..something I'm very picky about.😄
    Anyways just watched your XP 85mm f1.2 and am looking to expand my lens set with that excellent beauty ..!😁

      hi Raymond ,could you tell me more about coma and CA when using wide open until F2,8?I have got a copy (with red ring ) and that was horrible...I own 85,50 and 14XP,they are all good for astro (coma and CA very very weak)...What's wrong with my 35 XP copy!

      @@exocett8163 Hi Arnaud, my lens is almost perfect as to not much coma and CA.
      To say it this way, ..I even use it wide open at f1.2 for Milky Way panorama's.. that's how great my copy is!
      Here is a temporary link to the first panorama I made with it (link will be gone in 3 days)
      www.flickr.com/gp/raymond_k_photography/49991D
      The question is, how bad is you're copy? (is it de-centered, or Tilted??)
      ...you call it horrible, so it doesn't sound good...
      The XP/SP premium line is Samyangs highest quality lens-line, so If it's as bad as you say it is, then It's definitely a bad/defective copy
      I would doubt it would get through quality control that way... (if it did it's not okay..)
      Maybe it got handled badly during transit?
      In either way, if it performing really horrible, I would if you by any chance are able to do so, ..return it for a replacement.
      I advice you to do that, or if out of the returning time, still go to the retailer with the lens and show him how badly it performs, and tell them that for the price of that lens, and the 'promised quality, it is unacceptable ...

      @RaymondKPhotoVideography 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@exocett8163 Hi, Arnoud ..there is some coma and CA, but for a 35mm Full-Frame f1.2 wide open, the amount of coma and CA is remarkably low.
      At 10sec (35mm at Full-Frame) there isn't any star-trailing, so any shorter will show you the same results as to pin-point stars.
      The only thing is that Coma might be a bit less apparent with a shorter the exposure..
      But yesterday night I visited my country's Darksky park again, (testing out my a7s3)
      I took also some shots on the a7s3 with the Samyang
      Here is one wide open @ f1.2 (adapter registers it f1.3) - 6sec - iso6400 ..
      www.flickr.com/gp/raymond_k_photography/316130
      Pretty much the same results as the panorama shot..

    Eh...I'll stick with a 24-70 f2.8 for shooting around 35mm focal length on full frame. It probably isn't worth carrying around so much extra weight for that not so common instance of shooting wide with super shallow DOF. I see this being a specialized lens for specific situations.

    Been looking for beast like this, but after doing some research I came to the conclusion that 35mm 1.2f is just not working design. Went through the all 35mm 1.2f available on the market and they all have the same common issue - huge vignette.
    So huge that the difference between 2f and 1.2f is barely visible. Some of the lenses even perform the same bokeh wise - 1.2f or 2f the difference is hardly visible. Due to to 35mm focal length the wide open 1.2f or wide open 2f looks very similar with round bokeh balls, but 1.2f incorporates cats eye effect, some times it adds that extra, sometimes it doesnt sometimes the 1.2f lens stopped down to 1.4f give better bokeh (sigma art for example).
    The vignette and usually coma is really the issue here, because with 35mm lens, the area effected by the light drop of is nearly 2/3 of the image, and the vignette amounts to ~3ev most of the time. Which means that the lens correction is boosting the exposure through the 2/3 of the image area to a staggering +3ev numbers to even it out. That introduce banding especially in low light scenarios, where you already using high ISO values. You upload images to Lightroom, which is automatically corrected adding +3 ev across nearly the whole image, then you increase the EV or boost shadows and what you see is greatly overedited image with all the noise exaggerated...
    Another issue is light exposure difference between center of the image and the borders that are effected by vignette while using wide open at 1.2f. Lets say you are using a lens wide open, at 1/400 you take the image and what you see is that the center is overexposed while the borders are underexposed. Its really hard to even it out so that the center of the image stay correct and the borders still have visible area. This is especially hard in low light although the lenses were designed for low light conditions... You struggle choosing correct exposure times to retain the most detail through the whole image area. Because if you choose bad exposure you might not have the options to postprocess it correctly later. Often you go the black and white way to reduce the details in the shadows simply because there is no way to extract those properly... The same thing could be told about other super fast lenses that have high vignette, usually 50mm lenses from back in the day, since those were used with black and white film, having huge vignette wasnt an issue since in black and white shooting at night the harsh contrast and dark shadows were used as advantage to create the striking look, with shallow DOF and correct light it was really an advantage over the other lenses that had less background melting capabilities. But now when we strive for color and the sensors are very sensitive to the light we gather too much information in the less visible areas, colorful images taken in the low light scenarios are really hard to edit. This is where high vignette is very unpleasant effect.
    So for all of those who think that 35mm 1.2f might give them advantage in low light scenarios, I urge you to think things through again, because chances are you wont feel that 1.2f advantage and in fact you will be facing disadvantages of the harsh vignette effect that these lenses introduce. So in the end the best low light performer might not be the fastest lens in your bag.

    Hmm, I was not impressed. It would have been an amazing lens in, maybe 2015. Nowadays, I wouldn't buy it. I see no reason not to take the Tamron 35/1.4 over this, for example.

    • @ilmatanela1816
      @ilmatanela1816 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. I chose the Tamron 35 1.8 VC last year and I am so happy with it. Sharp, fairly compact and stabilized. Perfect for handheld street photography in poor light conditions. The 1.4 has to be fantastic.

      Because I own a TH-cam channel called Christopher Frost Photography where I review camera lenses (!) same reason as I review just about any other camera lens, really...

    As of now, There's only one seller on Ebay selling it and the price is much higher then Tamron SP 1.4 (sharpest AF 35 ever) and it's the same price or even higher then Sigma Art 1.2. I'm not sure what they are up to but in over saturated quality AF 35mm lens world, there's no way this is a fair price. On;y specific collectors would be interest in this.

    The chormatic aberrations of this lens are a bloody disaster, ther is no other way to say it. It doesn´t look that the f1.2 can be really useful, apart from benefit from lower ISO in dark conditions.

    There’s a reason cheap third party lenses are cheap where it never fails to surprise me why anyone who takes their craft seriously would waste their time buying cheap third party lenses. At least not those charging clients for their professional services.
