I bought one a month ago and love it. I've considered making it a 29'er, but so far I've enjoyed the way it rides just the way it is, and can't justify the expense of swapping wheels. I went to the bike shop looking for a Stache 7 (29'er, on sale but still $410 more) but walked out with this one. I think it's a great value with the exception of the pedals. I switched mine to Bontrager Line Pro. They look much better and the grip is great.

I just got a 2020 Roscoe 6 and love it, I went with the 6 because I'm just getting back into riding and I knew I'd be upgrading parts as I progress. I come from a bmx background and have already upgraded the seat and post to a pivotal setup (stranger tie dye seat), odyssey twisted PC pedals (pink and black swirl), and sunday Jake Seeley hand grips (pink and black swirl). I wouldn't upgrade the wheels. Those line 40's are the best. Most I would do to it is change the crank to xx1 and swap out the dropper lever to a wolftooth as that one will most likely break during the cold weather months. Those xr3's look great. Gonna get a set for my fuel. Very nice job. I'm impressed with your knowledge regarding all of your reviewed bikes and products
I've had mine for 2 weeks. Absolutely love it! Eventually I'm going to get a full squish as well but for the type of riding I do now, this beast is great
Review of Trek Roscoe 8 2020. In the efforts of full disclosure, I had given this bike positive reviews when I first got it back in September of 2019. However, after getting my MTB skills back, I can say that this bike is not designed for serious trail riding. It’s basically a hyped up weekend rider you can take on dirt roads. Having been an avid MTBer back in the late 80s, and 90s on, I had taken a 10 year hiatus. Not sure if I would still have my skills and not wanting to drop a ton on a full suspension, I opted for the Roscoe 8. This was against my better judgment, as I had owned a Trek 930 (Rigid) and had promised myself that I’d never buy another Trek. Unfortunately, with the lack of any objective reviews for the Roscoe 8 (most reviews online parrot the Trek’s advertising) and my failure to really study the dimensions on this bike, I made the same mistake again. What I like about the bike-it’s not bad to look at, and it comes tubeless “ready”; you need to tape the rims. It has a decent dropper post and front suspension lock-out. What I dislike: (1) the frame geometry, in my opinion, was designed so they could minimize shipping costs-I’m 5’11” and I opted for a large. The steep head tube angle and short wheel base give the rider the impression of riding a tall barstool on wheels. In addition, the plus tires unfortunately deform around any obstructions on the trial (as they’re designed), which further amplifies this bike’s tendency to “chock” its wheels on the smallest obstruction. Any benefit from the 27.5 wheels is completely lost. This thing loves to throw its rider over the bars. Even on serious uphills, the front tire is more inclined to “chock” rather than track like you would expect for a 27.5 wheel. (2) The plus size tires on this frame increase the instability of the ride. I love plus size tires, but on this hard tail, when the shocks compress even minimally and the tire compresses-the rider experiences a super-steep head tube angle. This requires hyper-vigilant scrutiny of the trail directly in-front for even the smallest obstructions. I recently rode a friend’s Pivot on one of my practice trails that I ride almost daily. I was confused that I didn’t recognize the surroundings, until I realized I didn’t have to stare at the trial 5’ in front of me. (3) Unfortunately, to combat the limitations of the frame geometry, the tires have to be inflated to higher pressure, and the front shock has to be stiffened. One of the minor drawbacks of plus size tires there is the capacity to laterally rebound-and with this short wheelbase, the bike gets squirrelly and yaws. On this bike, you don’t choose a line through a rock garden, you just hang on and ping-pong through. (4) Trek advertised the 2020 Roscoe 8 being equipped with Maxxis Minions, although in very tiny lawyer-ease script they reserved the right to change any of the specifications. The classic bait and switch and violá, mine came with Bontrager XR3. THEY SUCK. When encountering any moisture, the only gripping that occurs is the tire’s phenomenal ability to pack itself with mud and never let go. Basically you wind up with muddy slicks. In addition, the significant amount of knobby surface in relation to the contour of the tire results in its inability grab on to any uneven surface. When climbing over rocks or roots, you’ll inevitably hear the Bontrager “fart,” as the tire rapidly looses traction and spins uncontrolled over the obstruction, making a “strawberry” sound. These tires are great for dirt roads and smooth trails, but they can’t cut any serious off-road, and have to be replaced-right out of the box. (5) Miscellaneous stuff: The steep seat-tube angle and short chain stay do not make this bike a great climber. You really have to do some world class gymnastics on this thing to try to keep the front-end down, enough weight on the back tire to keep from loosing tractions, and still maintain balance and pedaling geometry. I was surprised to learn that this thing doesn’t have sealed on the head tube-it has an old fashion bearing race like my first Huffy banana seat. I found out because dirt got into it and I had to disassemble it and repack it with grease-super fun! Lastly, the seat sucks-the front is pointy enough to do double duty as a weapon. This gives it the uncanny ability to skewer and grip your riding-shorts when you stand up on the pedals (luckily, I wear padded underwear, so I haven’t mooned anyone. . . well, not fully.) I’m not trying to be a buzz kill-if you have a Roscoe and you like it, more power to you. However, I wish there were more objective reviews online before I bought mine; in my opinion, it’s a good solid entry level bike, but it’s not going to provide a stable and adequate MTB platform for a decent rider looking to ride moderately challenging terrain. I wish I had waited and saved up for a better bike (not a Trek).
@@Divisiononebasketball Hi DOB, I haven't done any bike shopping in earnest: I've got three kids in college, so I can't afford to take the depreciation to sell it and upgrade. What I can say is that if I could "do over," I don't think I'd do PLUS size tires again. I ride in New England: lots of roots, rock gardens, crazy drops and rutty terrain. I thought the PLUS size would make up for the lack of suspension, but I ran them at relatively low pressure and chewed through about $210 of tires--snake bite blowouts. This is after I upgraded to Maxxis Minions and Highrollers. Now I have to run higher pressure, but the PLUS size tires store a lot of energy, so they bounce and deflect like crazy (in addition to the problems I've mentioned about PLUS size tires deforming over minor obstructions and chocking). SO considering the extra money I've spent so far, for what I put into the Roscoe, I wish I had gotten a used aluminum or CF full suspension (close in price and weight)--if I was getting a hard tail, maybe the Santa Cruz Chameleon (looks like much better head tube angle and reach--sorry, I can't say for sure). TO be fair to the Roscoe, it's a fun bike on easy trails and I have mercilessly beaten the snot out of it: it's holding together (although the headset is developing a lot more play that I can't adjust out anymore and it's eating brake pads). Considering the price point, it's basically an entry-level bike. Although I haven't experienced any other terrain, I image the PLUS tires would be good in sandy terrain. What I can advise if you do get one: go up a size--that'll lower the center of gravity and fight the wheel chocking--AND a tire upgrade is mandatory; the stiffer Maxxis tires improved the stability slightly. It's ok for easy trails and dirt-roads, but it is NOT a New England shredder! Hope this helps.
I have roscoe 8 2019 and can´t praise it enough. I like the new roscoe, but I just can´t justify buying next bike, since I have this one just for like half a year haha.
This bike is in my top two bikes I'm considering buying as an entry level hardtail mountain bike. I'll be wanting to flog my bike hard. Any thoughts dude?
Hi, I tested this bike in Trek bike shop I work. Roscoe is a nice-looking, good vauled fun bike. Only downside I noticed is rear 141 boost rear hub. TA would be a better solution. One more for the fork, it has a DebonAir damper, which means better small bumps compliance. Downside: in reality painting looks cheap, like some entry level Marlin model.
I have the 2018 Roscoe 8 and I have converted my rear hub to a Bontrager Boost 148 with QR cones, which makes it Boost 142 - so it fits. I have also added 3 extra pawls to the hub to get 108 tooth drive. The new hub is the same hub that comes on the 2019 Remedy 8
NOW THAT'S MINE!!! GOT HER FIRST DIRT TODAY....NEW YEAR'S DAY....but dude....the XR3s' are 2.8 not 3.0.....not sure about upgrades i'm gonna do yet....my consultant has today off ....i always check with him before i lay a wrench on any of my bikes...but we'll be looking into it to be sure....i think if anything first will be a Chris King ceramic bottom bracket....i LOVE THOSE THINGS!!!!! and if a Chris King ceramic rear hub would be worth the bucks.. maybe Renthal fat bars "Lite" in black...and KMC X12 chain in black....but me and my guy need to look into KMC/SRAM compatability....all you need to do to that bike out of the box is inject some sealant into the tires....Stans' Bontrager either or....both the same....just depends on if you like white or blue dots when you pull goatheads out....i do 1 1/2 oz. because i run light on sealant....thanks for showing folks MY BIKE!!!! heehee
I'm new to riding and this is the first serious mountain bike I've ever bought and not even tried it yet.other than a 500 pound cannondale 5 years ago lol.i clapped eyes on it and put half the money down...is gorgeous and can't wait.i moved to aviemore Scotland at Xmas so would have been criminal not too and I don't drive.will probably be no more than a glorified shopper lol who knows but am gonna mod it too.wasnt so sure on the Germanic colours but has grown on me
I ended up with the 2020 Roscoe 7 for $1260 out the door. Figured i save the extra $350 over the 8 and just upgrade it next year. Only thing i got was a set of Race Face Affect pedals. Im coming from a 2001 Trek 6500zx with a ton of upgrades (about $400 worth over the years) the 6500zx is now been given to my wife to get her started into the world of MTB, which is perfect because its a 26” and fits her well. Roscoe 7 is amazing and i love it! Good review. My only question is how the the 2019 Roscoe 7s Shimano Deore M6000 compared to the Sram Eagle NX ?
Have the 2018 Roscoe 8 which was a lot cheaper. - 1200 bucks I figured it was upgradable and am busy with that. 51 to 44 offset forks, better rear wheel and hubs, better brakes - I prefer upgrading to make the bike suit me. That said I wouldn't have dropped 1800 bucks on the 2020. The Roscoe 8 is the most fun bike I've ever ridden. If you're not an upgrader like me it's good value and you'll have a lot of fun. I ride single track in Phoenix AZ. Hardtails rule!
looks like there is redundancy now between this and the x-caliber 9. They are pretty close in price point as well. I suspect the x-caliber 9 might be phased out.
Beautiful bike! Can you do a review of the trek 820 in the future? It’s the lowest end of trek’s mountain bikes but it’s still a very capable workhorse!
I have this bike and it really is a good bike. Only downside I have noticed is that the paint does scratch quite easily. But I will beat it up as such and when I need to I'll probably have a local shop cerakote it.
Wish I waited for the 2020! Great that they've went 44mm offset instead of 51mm. Great that they've upgraded the fork also. Maybe not the best but much better than the Judy.
What's the difference between this and the women's, desides the saddle and colour? As covid has stopped anything coming into Australia the only thing left is the women's and as purple is actually a cool colour I'm thinking of getting it!
Interesting just how much the XR3+ tread pattern differs from the XR3 team issue I have on my X-Cal. I guess they see that extra half inch or so and the designers go, "There's so much room for activities!"
This would be my first bike, I am looking to get this or a verve 3. This has the advantage on trails but how would this do against the verve 3 speed wise?
@@Jamesthebikeguy Thank you for the reply. Sidewalk / some street and I would like to cut through the grass sometimes. This will be my first bike as an adult. I want to be able to ride it to the store to get something (for exercise). I went to the store and they have have the rosco 8 today but they cannot have the verve 3 for an additional 4 months....

I've had this bike a month and the headset has come loose a couples of times already. I'll be upgrading the stem soon. Also, the rear Hub is a must upgrade, the Boost isn't cutting the mustard for me
Hey man, thank you for the vid it was really helpfull. Isn't the weight a little bit too much for the price range? Also, do you think this is a good bike for an area where there are a lot of pretty hard climbs?
@@Chris-de2qc unfortunately Vitus bikes are hard to get/very expensive in other countries than the US/UK. The shipping and duties to order one to Canada is minimum 150$ up to around 500$. So unless he’s in US or UK it really wouldn’t be worth it.
@@Chris-de2qc i looked at chain reaction cycles, they have a vitus sentier for roughly the same price of the roscoe 8, the vitus has much better components, with a fox fork, really good tires and good geo. vitus is a really good value for money brand.

As usual, a very descriptive and informative video. Thank you for posting. For $1780, I think the rear should include a thru-axle and not a QR. I’m not an expert and am honestly fairly new to the MTB world. I recently picked up a new 2019 Roscoe 6 for my wife at $799 and for that, it’s a VERY strong value in my opinion. QR doesn’t bother me at sub $1k. But nearly $2k for a hardtail makes it difficult for me to justify the Roscoe 8. All other specs look pretty great. And I’ll have to investigate that bit of wheel upgradability you mentioned in the rear. That was something I hadn’t heard before and I’m very interested. Is that for 2020 only or would it filter down to the 2019 as well? Thanks again and please keep the great content coming!
I agree that a thru-axle would be nicer. With that said I doubt that for 99% of the buyers of this bike would be able to notice any appreciable difference. So in my book it's not an important part of the buying decision especially when you can still upgrade wheels and get everything else as a package.
Great informative review -- I've been riding Trek since 1995 :) and my current bike a 6500 has been in use for 15 years alone. I am 6 foot 1 and thinking of getting this bike in XL. The sizing guide on the trek site says that I really need a L (19,5) but because I have long legs and importantly long gangly arms everything on the 6500 is set on the limit and it always felt a bit small. Whats your experience with the XL ? does it feel like a big bike or is the sizing more on the small size ?
@@Jamesthebikeguy so in the end I chose the XL and I've been riding it pretty much every day since I got it. Really glad I got the XL because the slightly longer top tube gives me a bit more space without me needing to fit a longer stem while I can still hang off the back of the saddle. It can really handle steep inclines without looping out and downhill are real easy. In short it's really fantastic bike especially for the gnarly forest trails around here. I just need to work on my fitness now :)
I'm 6'1 too. I tested the L version today and it felt too small to me. Unfortunately there isn't a single XL one available in my country so I'm gonna have to wait to test it.

Yes! check out the TREK Marlin line! i am checking out and thinking of purchasing the marlin 4, 5 or maybe the marlin 6. all well below 1k and great entry level bikes for trial riding! this sport is so much fun, in 2019 I bought a 2010 specialized rockhopper pro comp for low cost on craigslist and i have such a blast riding around local trials, but the bike is a little bit too big for me, but i am so hooked to the sport, so i am looking to purchase a 2020 trek marlin that will fit me better. (meaning I am going into to the shop to make sure to get the right size bike) The trek marlin 4 is less than 500 dollars and has an aluminum frame. great value!
Hi there. Can't decide between these two, would you recommend the specialized fuse 275 2020 Or the Trek Roscoe 8 2020? I would be riding rough steep technical trails aswell as trails with lots of jumps. But also quite a bit of steep rough climbing Thanks

@@mwsellox7751 just to say I have mine for 2/3 weeks now and I have been riding it every day. Are you certain that's an X large? I was checking the specs on the Trek website and the head tube is supposed to be 12" on an XL. It doesn't look like a 12" head tube. Nice review. Nice rig.
Yep I have the 2019 and it’s an absolute blast to ride. Wish the 2019 came with the RS 35 instead of Judy’s but at least I have something to dream about upgrading. Chances are if I got the 35 I’d probably want to upgrade to a 130mm Pike anyway. Great review by the way. Very detailed. Thanks.

Gonna get a set for my fuel. Very nice job. I'm impressed with your knowledge regarding all of your reviewed bikes and products
Thanks! I agree the XR3 looks very nice
I've just bought one of these in the UK and I've noticed in a lot of pictures the bike has the xr tyres but some like mine have come with maxxis on
Love mine; got it in June ‘19; solid bike & lots of fun
Nice, keep enjoying it!
I've had mine for 2 weeks. Absolutely love it! Eventually I'm going to get a full squish as well but for the type of riding I do now, this beast is great
Sweet, congrats. Have fun

Awesome!
Not enough thru-axles in the parts bin?
It looks so niceee! 🔥🔥
Woot Woot!
Let's get a little green in that livery and call it the Trek Rasta!
Lol
Im actually thinking of doing that
Review of Trek Roscoe 8 2020.
What I dislike:
(1) the frame geometry, in my opinion, was designed so they could minimize shipping costs-I’m 5’11” and I opted for a large.
This gives it the uncanny ability to skewer and grip your riding-shorts when you stand up on the pedals (luckily, I wear padded underwear, so I haven’t mooned anyone. . . well, not fully.)
I’m not trying to be a buzz kill-if you have a Roscoe and you like it, more power to you. However, I wish there were more objective reviews online before I bought mine; in my opinion, it’s a good solid entry level bike, but it’s not going to provide a stable and adequate MTB platform for a decent rider looking to ride moderately challenging terrain. I wish I had waited and saved up for a better bike (not a Trek).
johnfkiii appreciate the thorough analysis, was just about to pull the trigger on the 8... Will take some more time now. Thx!
johnfkiii this was such a thorough review. In your opinion what’s the bike you wish you would have waited to purchase?
I've been bike hunting and this is my next bike.. I just love everything about it for under $2k..
For real, sweet bike!

Sweet, thanks for watching!
This bike is in my top two bikes I'm considering buying as an entry level hardtail mountain bike. I'll be wanting to flog my bike hard.
Any thoughts dude?
thanks for letting us know fillip
But the rear dropouts are Boost 141
@@brentmip It works. The conversion was done by local Trek shop.
Can you review the 2019 and 2020 giant fathom 1 27.5?

James I ended up settling for the 2020 stumpjumper st alloy 29er black on black as I changed my mind to a full sussy.good bike m8?
Sram nx Eagle has a way wider range and 12 speed too
i have the 2020 roscoe 6. great bike in the roscoe line up. only upgrades i’m making is a dropper post and front suspension
Have fun with the Roscoe
Good review!!
Thanks! Hope you subscribed for more :-)
I preordered mine....now the long wait...
It will be worth it
Have the 2018 Roscoe 8 which was a lot cheaper.
Sweet enjoy the riding
Like the way that they add plus tires to make up for the no rear suspension shows they know what they y are doing
Yes it does!
Big upgrade to the 2019 it looks like
For sure, huge upgrades.
looks like there is redundancy now between this and the x-caliber 9. They are pretty close in price point as well. I suspect the x-caliber 9 might be phased out.
Please could you do x-calibre 8
When I see one. A X-Cal 7 was just recorded though.
Jamesthebikeguy oh sick thank you for your videos are amazing I only asked as getting an x cal 8 soon
Best looking hardtail ever
hard to argue with that!
It's very heavy. Too heavy for the price.
Beautiful bike! Can you do a review of the trek 820 in the future? It’s the lowest end of trek’s mountain bikes but it’s still a very capable workhorse!
Indrajeet Naik sram Nx, good? Rockshox gold 35 rl too?
Marlin 4 video is releasing tomorrow! Check my feed, possibly an 820 in the future you never know.
Jamesthebikeguy awesome!!! I’m most likely gonna move on to the Marlin 4 after my 820 is worn out
I have this bike and it really is a good bike.
Well remember you got a year of riding on your 2019, and you could say that again in 2021 after you bought a 2020
@@Jamesthebikeguy Yeah true although my bike only has one standard thing left, thats the dropper lol.

Me too!
Very similar to the 2020 x caliber 8 I just bought 👍
why does it weigh practically the same as the marlin 5 when its 3 times more in $$?
3x the capability. More travel, wider tires, substantial build
Is it worth 3xs more ?
I got to demo one down the flow trail at a local event, great bike! I have a ghost kato 5.9 and i like it for the money but this R8 is nice.
I bet the demo was fun!
What's the difference between this and the women's, desides the saddle and colour? As covid has stopped anything coming into Australia the only thing left is the women's and as purple is actually a cool colour I'm thinking of getting it!
Hi James,
Roscoe can be also a travel bike, with a nice rack, seat, and finer tires?
Thanks,
Interesting just how much the XR3+ tread pattern differs from the XR3 team issue I have on my X-Cal. I guess they see that extra half inch or so and the designers go, "There's so much room for activities!"
The plus tire is pretty awesome

Yeah, for sure.
Hey man, thank you for the vid it was really helpfull. Isn't the weight a little bit too much for the price range? Also, do you think this is a good bike for an area where there are a lot of pretty hard climbs?
Not considering this is a plus size tire bike.
Going for the fuse as no through axles Poor geometry stem too long and fork too short
I actually bought the vitus sentier 2021. Better value than fuse imo.
@@hughjanus3512 have you looked at chain reaction cycles? i ordered a stem from them over 100 cad, and i believe they say anything over 100 is free global shipping. i think once all this inflated demand for bikes is over, they will be in stock more often
So in my book it's not an important part of the buying decision especially when you can still upgrade wheels and get everything else as a package.
nice seat tube angle

Great informative review -- I've been riding Trek since 1995 :) and my current bike a 6500 has been in use for 15 years alone. I am 6 foot 1 and thinking of getting this bike in XL. The sizing guide on the trek site says that I really need a L (19,5) but because I have long legs and importantly long gangly arms everything on the 6500 is set on the limit and it always felt a bit small. Whats your experience with the XL ? does it feel like a big bike or is the sizing more on the small size ?
Large would be my bet. With Trek also having their ML size the Large is actually pretty roomy.
@@Jamesthebikeguy cheers mate :)
@@MrSouzy how tall are you? I'm asking cuz I'm 6'4'' and I can't decide between XL/XXL.
I'm 6'1 too. I tested the L version today and it felt too small to me. Unfortunately there isn't a single XL one available in my country so I'm gonna have to wait to test it.
Should i buy the trek roscoe 7 2020 or trek roscoe 8 2020?
If you can swing it, the 8 for sure. Otherwise the 7 is nice and can be upgraded later on.
