      Love the little blue bottle,but I would clean it where every little detail in the glass sparkled. Do you think it could have contained smelling sauce (salts? what ever it was called )

    Considering what kind of tools glass blowers had in those times in the past, that tiny cobalt blue bottle was made by a man at the peak of the industry's skilled labor, meaning he must have been extremely talented to be able to make such a tiny bottle! And the fact that it survived all this time, also attests to his skill!

    I Truely Love you, Fluer and Kate. The enjoyment you bring into people's living rooms and lives should not be taken lightly. Please never lose your enthusiasm for this wonderful hobby or your expression of that joy. You never fail to uplift and encourage us, simply by being unafraid to have fun and making us a part of it. I am grateful. : ) Fave finds, hand-twirled bead and mini blue bottle.

    Hello, My 7 year old granddaughter, who loves your programme, and I have just been watching your latest video. I was so thrilled when you found the Union Castle ship price of crockery. As a girl and young lady I travelled on many Union Castle ships in the 60’s and 70’s between Southampt and Cape Town, stopping at Madeira and Las Palmas to restock. They were beautiful ships and in those days you would meet many characters with stories to tell. True travellers. We lived o. The sea front in Cape Town and every Wednesday and Saturday morning we would see the castle ships appear on the horizon. Always on time after travelling so far. A magic era long gone. What a find. 😁😁🥰🇬🇧🌷

    I’m just going to take a moment to admire Kates beautiful autumnal colours. She always wears the most gorgeous colours that compliment her red hair perfectly. Also, Fleur wears a skirt, a SKIRT, mudlarking. Not only that, she manages to looks relaxed and comfortable. Me? I would be tripping over it every time I squatted down, ripping it, the wind would blow it over my head first gust, I would get it soggy any where near water. As for doing sneaky loo stops in the wild…. Nope. Another great video. One day I’ll send you a video of me mudlarking my beach…. That’ll be a very short one! Xxxx

    I was born in South Africa, brought up in Zambia and Zimbabwe and then married an Irish man at the age of 19. We will be 48 years married in August. The cheapest way to travel back in the day was by sailing rather than flying. We sailed from Cape Town to South Hampton on the Edinburgh Castle. We arrived in the snow and it was my first time to experience it and I was so excited. Thank you for bringing back some amazing memories from your incredible finds. Thanks also for sharing your adventures!

    My maternal great-grand aunt’s husband, John Brown (1843 -1923) was a sea captain who sailed for the Castle Line. He was captain of the sailing ship the Tantallon Castle between the UK and South Africa and the East Indies, he also sailed between the UK and New York. I heard many things about his adventures from my Mom over the years (he died the year before Mom was born) but I learned much more fron news articles.
    He was responsible for rescuing the passengers of several ships over his career. He came across a foundering ship off the coast of South Africa and took the passengers and crew aboard before the ship sank. While he was returning to Capetown with those he had rescued, he came across another ship where the crew was fighting to fix a hole in the hull. He and his crew helped to make a temporary fix and stayed with her until the were able to get into port to make repairs.
    Upon returning to Liverpool to drop off the passengers and crew from the first ship, that he rescued, he then sailed for New York. Returning from New York, he came across the ship “Mary Stetson” which was sinking. He pulled the passengers to safety and returned them to New York. For this rescue, he was awarded a gold chronometer by President Ulysses S. Grant! How I wish I had known him!!

    • @Mudhooks
      @Mudhooks ปีที่แล้ว

      The Castle Lines had ships like Tantallon Castle whose first incarnation was as a sailing ship. When steamships came about many of the ships were retired and were replaced with steamships which inherited the names of the older ships. Such was the case of the Tantallon Castle. I have a copy of a drawing of her as the sailing ship that he would have known.

    The lovely little face that Kate found - it wasn't in the wrap up. It looked like it could be made into a wonderful pendant with a bit of sanding around the edge and then mounted in a silver back. Perhaps it is something you could ask Alex or Gail to do for you if you wanted?

    My Dad was a member of the Ship Society he collected ship postcards from the Union Castle Line many were called the Mail Ship sailing from Southampton to Cape Town and return many people sailed on holiday or emigration to South Africa. As a kid we would go to the docks and wave goodbye lots of blowing of the horn and streamers being thrown from the deck to folk on the warf. I have so many wonderful memories. Love from Cape Town the Pendenis Castle was the Ship on which my husband sailed to Cape Town lovely finds so exciting.

    That tiny blue bottle and the stylish Potter and Moore bottle make great additions to your wonderful small bottle collection, loved the display cabinet. Kate, your shred story brought back memories of my (Ian) childhood days in Rhodesia in the late 1950s. Post to England went either by sea or airmail, the former being cheaper postage and always via the Union Castle ships. Envelopes had to be marked SEAMAIL! Liked the small pencil sharpener, unusual.

    I love the pencil sharpener,proof that there was a time when people made even the most utilitarian things beautiful.
    I have a thought,regarding the tiny blue bottle:
    The term ‘Dram’ comes to mind,I do not recall if it is a term of measurement or a style of bottle.
    I wonder if this is an old dram of ‘smelling salt’,used for reviving women who fainted,at a time when women were believed to be prone to that thing called ‘hysteria’.
