Product review / unboxing: POC Ventral Air MIPS Helmet and AIM Sunglasses - first look + fitting

  • Light and bright, the white POC Ventral Air MIPS helmet is a product that I’ve been intrigued by simply because it’s clearly popular with cyclists everywhere. Matched with POC’s AIM sunglasses, it’s a great, comfortable combination for riding.
    This is the unboxing: my first chance to sample some of the great POC cycling range.
    - Rob
    PS. Please note: the commentary on sizing is incorrect.
    I asked for a medium and a large... and what I've got is a small and a medium.
    The labelling on the box includes all three sizes - and the actual size is the one listed in red.
    You are correct. I am therefore talking about a small and a medium helmet... (under the assumption it was a medium and large).
    Please excuse the error.

    I have the POC Ventrail Spin & it literally saved my life, the helmet took the brunt of my impact with the pavement on the left temple area which was crushed & compacted, it cost me £225 when they first came out around three years ago & i replaced the crashed one with a like for like helmet, they are that good & very comfortable to wear, definitely the best helmet i have worn & used to date.

    I have this helmet but in the safety orange color and the "Y" straps are completely adjustable but you need to work at it. It's one continuous strap but on each side you need to fiddle with them and loosen and tighten until you get the right fit. This is my second POC helmet and so I know what I'm talking about. My old helmet is the Octal which has two separate fixed straps that are less adjustable but easier to manage. You also don't need to cut the excess because there isn't an end point. The excess gets tucked inside a clever little cloth elastic section that keeps it tidy. I agree with Rob, the front needs a little more padding but the medium fits me great. Cheers

      Uh oh. Since I got mine a few weeks ago I always wondered why the strap sagged so much.
      Turns out I cut that elastic cloth when it arrived thinking it was some protection thing for shipping 😂😂

    Why didn't u get poc ventral lite? Size Large is 250g. Of course medium will create pain on each side and feel restricted. I wear my Large Bontrager Wavecel Blaze over my nike hat and it's perfect fit, however the helmet weighs 465g which gives affects my nerves at around 3pm of the day from carrying a heavy load. It can impair vision and affect the mind....

    Confused by your video as POC said this helmet is MEDIUM is 54-59 and the large is 56-61. You state at 2:48 that large is 54-59? I measure at a 57.4cm head and have always worn a medium Tectal for MTB. But looking for a helmet for gravel was surprised their medium Ventrai Air was too tight. This despite being right in the middle of the size. Much be other consideration for head sizing such as skull shape? Still trying to sort it out myself and think several helmet purchases may be coming to test.

    • @ride-media
      @ride-media  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Joshua, good question. Remember: this is a medium helmet, so what I say relates to that size...
      1. There is a little 'bedding' on the inside of the vent that, I'm guessing, is positioned there (as a stick-on, small foam sheeting) to minimise rattle when sunglasses are stored up there.
      2. That bedding wore off quite quickly... ie. a few times I might have stabbed the end of the sunglass arms into the slight protrusion of the stick-on stuff and eventually I pealed them off. (There is one video, and I can't remember which one, where you can see a little white thing flapping in the breeze - that's before I pulled it off.)
      3. Although I thought that little cushioning was a good idea, it's probably overkill... and, ultimately, it didn't work properly for very long.
      4. Still, the sunglasses stay there nicely: safe and sound and not a lot of movement.
      5. I do flip the sunnies upside down before sticking them into the vents, and that helps push the end of the Sutro arms off my head when they are in storage.
      6. The POC Aim sunnies fit up there very, very neatly - assisted, I'm guessing, by the larger surface area on the arms of the sunglasses.
      7. I'm also using the Elicit - the BEST sunglasses I've ever ridden with - and they fit in very neatly, but don't feel too firm. Still, they stay put as if being directed by a very clever dog handler... (know what I mean?)
      8. The Sutro mini do stay, but I didn't ride much with them as they - for some reason - were the only ones that rattled around a little and even seemed to threaten to fall out (so I put them on my face instead, ie. I didn't want to lose them).
      Hope all that helps.
      - Rob

    • @ride-media
      @ride-media  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm managing it surprisingly well. I absolutely understand the question though...
      Still, a summer has come and gone and I've mainly used this helmet (only occasionally swapping it for a Ventral Lite... but that was four or five rides).
      A bucket of water is a handy tool at times.
      After most rides, the helmet gets a dunk in cold water. Around once every two weeks, I give it around 15 minutes in the bucket with some laundry powder (can't remember the name) and then give the straps a good scrub before a thorough rinsing.
      The white is still essentially white.
