I once saw a comment somewhere that said: "Where John Wick is a relentless sledgehammer, Robert McCall is a surgical knife." And I think it's the perfect way to describe Robert McCall in these movies.
Robert gives people what he feels they need. If they need encouragement, he gives them encouragement. If they need a coach, he gives them a coach. And if they need violence to be visited upon themselves... he helps them with that. That is the EQUALIZER. Some people just need a little help.
Jen is one of the best editors. She doesn't spend five boring minutes of a segment trying to guess what's going to happen next. Just inserts a comment here and there. Very concise. She literally puts 60 minutes worth of content into 40 minutes. Brevity is the soul of wit!
Thanks Miss Jen! This movie is actually based on a great 80's TV crime thriller of the same name. Edward Woodward played a middle-aged former British agent who helped people who were being threatened. The show was more cerebral than these films, but had terrific camera work and score. I loved it.
I really liked the original TV show. What a wholesome concept of a guardian angel coming out of the shadows to help people in trouble, speaking the King's English, no less. Haven't seen this movie. Is it any good?
Before hiring Woodward, they actually asked Denzel if he wanted the role. He said he wanted to do it but he was on a big show called St Elsewhere, so he couldn't do it. Small world!
Yes, the theme to the (more thoughtful, talkie) tv series The Equalizer is awesome! Composed by Stewart Copeland of The Police. It is one the 80s finest theme tunes... talk about being an earworm. ♥
Denzel Washington is such an amazing actor and is always great in everything he plays. He was an absolute badass in this and you should definitely check out the sequels as well.
The final shot of the film is inspired by the painting 'Nighthawks' by Edward Hopper. It has been referenced by countless other films and media as well.
Robert McCall in this version is a former MARSOC (Marine Special Operations) turned ISA (that is like CIA Special Operators) who faked his death to leave that life behind to honor his wife's dying wish. When your body is stressed, it goes into flight or fight mode. high levels of cortisol and adrenaline are released into the blood stream causing you to perceive time as slowing down. This is really your brain processing sensory input faster. With the right training and experience you cannot just react faster but think in a controlled manner. This is what the camera is trying to explain quickly. Honey has antimicrobial healing properties and has been used for thousands of years for healing.
This Robert McCall was former US Marine (Gunnery Sgt) and former black ops officer for DIA. (Defense Intelligence Agency) He conducted paramilitary missions.
I was a big fan of the 1980’s TV show. Don’t know where to go to find it, but I’d be down to watch a few episodes again. Never expected a reboot but Denzel is the man to pull it off. 2 & 3 are definitely worth watching.
The final "weapon" is a .22 caliber anchor setter. It's basically a gun that uses blanks to fire a specialized nail to secure things like sole plates to concrete foundations.
I jumped on this bandwagon because a lot of people told me how good it was and the third movie being released. Edward Woodward in the original TV series defined the character for me in the 80s which made me resistant to seeing it. But it’s Denzel wrecking 💩and equalizing so it’s cool 😂😂
32:54 What you’re hearing is Tuvan throat singing, a Mongolian art form which, through the use of various resonances, allows one voice to produce polyphony. There are various forms, including adding a sub-octave harmonic for ridiculously low notes. This form, which adds multiple high harmonics, is very common in musical scores. Much like the whine of a bowed cymbal, once you know what to listen for, you’ll hear it everywhere.
IMHO, this movie and "Man on Fire" are Denzel's best. Not his top awards or the critics' choice, of course, but I'm just a regular person. As for the actress who played Alina, I'd say she's best known for her role in "Kick-Ass," which is well worth watching. At the end of the reaction, you're looking at the diner and thinking of a painting. It's probably "Nighthawks," by Hopper.
I think this is the first movie I saw use a nail gun since Lethal Weapon. Power tools are no joke! Surprised they don't get used in movies more often, but that is probably due to how gross it is when they are used.
This one might be your most 'frigged' yet!😂 awesome reaction as usual. Again, i love that you spend a lot of time on the soundtrack! So many don't. I'm glad you enjoyed this. The whole series is pretty fantastic. My favorite denzel is 100% DejaVu. Awesome grounded scifi with the best car chase ever! A+++ Jen!
Denzel is great. His cool intensity here is something most action stars can’t match, and it shows that he is a great actor first and foremost (often not what action stars are cast for).
The Equalizer movies are sort of a cross between the Jason Bourne and the John Wick series, but with just enough freshness to be their own thing. The other two are also awesome, hope you watch them soon. The second one is my personal favorite.
YES! Do check out Equalizer 2 and 3! Also see: Glory Training Day Out of Time Philadelphia Heck, is there a bad Denzel film? The Mighty Quinn I guess. But he's still great.
Loved the reaction Jen. Denzel transformers into every character he plays so seemingly, one of the greatest actors ever. The sequels are just as good as this one.
11:36 "He's such a nice guy!! ... umm, apart from the killing". Classic Jen comment. [Hey, there's no rule against watching the TH-cam Edit even though I've seen the full-length watch-along on Patreon is there? I didn't think so. 😉]
I'm so happy to see you reacting to this, Jen! Robert is such a great character, and Denzel plays him to perfection. I can't wait to see your reaction to the next one!
I _seriously_ hope that the day never comes when Jen sees a cool movie explosion and _doesn't_ feel genuine joy :). Great action movie, elevated by Denzel Washington (like everything he's in).
By the way, the Television Series this was based on with the same name lasted three seasons from 1958 to 1989. There is a new one as well, but the original was where it was at. Of course, my favorite Television series (and reruns) of that period in my life. The main character was Edward Woodward as Robert McCall, a retired British intelligence agent with a mysterious past, who uses the skills from his former career to exact justice on behalf of innocent people who find themselves in dangerous circumstances. He rarely used a firearm with gun powder cartridges.
This was based on a TV series from the mid to late 80s, which has also been rebooted (4th season to start nextt year) with Queen Latifa in the title role.
This trilogy of movies was among my mom’s favorites. Our last movie date before she passed two weeks ago was watching “Equalizer 3.” Good choice Jen. You can never go wrong with Denzel. If you dare and if you can find it, I recommend the ‘80’s medical show “St. Elsewhere.” Denzel was in that along with a huge number of classic character actors. You’d like it; it’s very quirky.
I love breakfast anytime too. The last tool he used was an actuated nail gun can be quite a weapon. As you said just killing people with power tools. One of my favorite movies. Much Love to you and all the best. Love your channel ❤🙂
32:50 "What is that sound -- it sounds like a voice." That's a style of Tuvan throat singing: a lower, droning note with an unusually predominant whistling-type overtone high above it. It's kind of like if you wanted to use just a single voice to imitate the sound of bagpipes.

I was hooked on the TV show when I was in highschool in the 80s. The Equalizer trilogy is AWESOME. Wait until you see the 3rd movie. McCall is a former Marine gunnery sergeant and DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) assassin/hitman. Not CIA. Highly trained in tactical combat martial arts, weapons, pain tolerance, infiltration, etc. When people are meant to disappear or die in a way that the government cannot be linked to, he's who they send. Great reaction!
Timing yourself in everything is a manner to have a memory of how long it takes to do things so that can be used when calculating variables quickly. It can simply be described as discipline. The tool he used to killed Teddy at HomeMart was a nail gun powered by .22 caliber blanks.
The TV series was before your time. It ran for 88 episodes, 1985 - 1989, I watched it. religiously. Robert McCall was played by Edward Woodward, 55 white and born in London. A lot of the time, he wore suits, a long cashmere coat, and black leather gloves. He drove a 1984 Jaguar XJ6 Series III. At the time, he took bad assery to a new level.
This is right up there with John Wick for protagonist setup lines: Were you able to help him? He didn't come for help. He came for permission. And then there are some really terrific lines from the next two movies as well. You WILL love them!
You should watch "The Book of Eli" if you haven't seen it yet. That's a Denzel movie. Another movie with him in it and Keanu Reeves and would be unusual for a reactor to watch is "Much Ado About Nothing". One of my favorites, an early work of Kenneth Branagh.
34:49 "What does he have?" That's a nail gun, commonly used for installing anything that requires lots of nails like hardwood floors, baseboards, or crown molding.
When I first heard the title of this movie, I thought it was about a guy who went around optimizing the sound of people's stereos. 😎 Great reaction, per usual. And you are 100% correct about breakfast any time.
Every time I see the discipline and kindness but with zero weakness of Denzel's character in this movie (like when he asks Ralphie how he was going to drag him out of a burning building), I feel it is the story of Coach Boone if instead of going to Football, he went to special forces.
I still remember my father watching the TV series in the 80s. Antoine Fuqua did an amazing job with this whole trilogy. And Denzel is the perfect protagonist for the whole series.
A must watch for Denzel fans is Man On Fire. He and a very young Dakota Fanning light up a very dark movie. All three Equalizer movies are spectacular! It was fun watching with you, thank you so much. 😊🇨🇦
Rewatching your reactions is always a treat Jen 🔥 this movie featuring Denzel in a roll you wouldn't have expected in a similar vein as Liam Nielson in taken , Kevin bacon in death sentence , bob odenkirk in nobody and several others . Pringles are pretty great and the empty tube is handy for loose change ( yes money still exists lol ) the staircase scene is pretty cool like verbal chess . Some pretty gruesome deaths in this one but your action movie reactions are always so much fun 🙂 this was great cheers Jen 🔥💙🔥💙
Classic TV series becoming films or film franchises and actually being successful is a rarity. One is Mission:Impossible and the other is The Equalizer. One individual to even up the odds for the innocent. Bringing the pain to the bad guys that deserve it. I loved the classic tv series (1985-1989) since childhood with the late Golden Globe winner, Edward Woodward. It was revamped into a new original series with Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall/co-producer (since 2021, 3 seasons). To have this great actor/filmmaker collaboration make something like this is very rare. Denzel as McCall/co-producer and Antoine Fuqua directing didn't try to copy the show, beat for beat (except for the last shot). I saw it in the IMAX format and it became Denzel's highest grossing film ever until it's sequel outgrossed it, 4 years later.
Denzel is great in everything. His Oscar performance was in Training Day - 2001, same director as this. My favourite performance is in Cry Freedom which is not well known as it was before he was a big star in 87. He played Stephen Biko, an important figure in the eventual removal of Apartheid in South Africa. Probably not a channel pick as it is not well known but worth checking out as the soundtrack is awesome and includes Peter Gabriel’s song about Biko. Link to song…th-cam.com/video/luVpsM3YAgw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=7O5EO_eouHfkih4W
For more Denzel, I always recommend his work with Tony Scott (RIP). Man on Fire, Taking of Pelham 123 remake, Unstoppable, and Deja Vu are all great, and you've already seen their first collab Crimson Tide. Also Inside Man, from Spike Lee, is some great Denzel
There's no Denzil in it, unfortunately.. though it does have a Drexl. But Tony Scott's / Quentin Tarantino's 'True Romance' is possibly Tony Scott's best film. What do you think?
@@mr.a8315 I think it's a decent film, but lacks the artistry of some of Tony's other work for me. Great performances all around though. Best is very subjective, but my favorite Tony Scott is The Hunger. It's gorgeous and moody, and so much slower paced than his other work.
@@LordVolkov Very true re subjective. I haven't seen The Hunger (1983), one of TS's few that I've missed. Always seemed to be peckish when it was showing and I didn't want to throw petrol onto the fire. Catherine Deneuve was very beautiful.
Lots of great Denzel movies out there. The Pelican Brief, Philadelphia, Courage Under Fire, The Bone Collector, The Hurricane,John Q.,Man on Fire, The Manchurian Candidate and more...
Robert used the honey on his wound as it has antiseptic properties plus, to seal the wound and bond the bandage in place (so it wouldn't rub on the wound). Natural Honey is untreated so can contain bacteria so he flash boiled it, bringing it to the boil and removing it from the heat immediately to kill any bugs, if he let it boil any longer it'd destroy the antiseptic properties and also crystallise it making it useless. If you liked this watch Equalizer 2, 3 plus "Man on Fire" (Denzel again), "Nobody" starring Bob Odenkirk and "The Accountant" with Ben Afleck. Along with John Wick these are some of the Best "silent hero with a dark past" movies 🎥 N years. The Accountant is apparently getting a sequel too as it slipped under most people's radar, after all... who expects "glood n buts" in a movie titled the accountant?
Hi Jen! This was fun. Denzel is indeed a marvelous actor, who has always given great performances. If you really want to see the very best of his acting, though, you've got to check out "Glory", "The Hurricane" and, especially, "Malcolm X".
Great reactions to this awesome movie, Jen. The interesting thing about this movie version of the Edward Woodward 80's TV show Equalizer, is that it's actually more like the classic 60's British TV show " Callan " that Edward Woodward starred in previously. Callan was a professional assassin, working for the British government, who would eliminate threats to Queen and Country.
Denzel doing it for the little guy he's Spiderman only he has a different set of skills 🙂 I use nail guns but none like the one he used holy moly that's dangerous AF , awesome reaction Jen hope you're having a blast with your sister and having a fantastic day
The equipment he used to kill Teddy, a lot of reactors mistake it for a regular nail gun, but it is a concrete anchor nail gun. I commercial construction they pour the concrete floor, and to hang pipelines, sprinkler systems or air ducts they use that tool to anchor and suspend each of the systems if they can't anchor to a steel I-beam. And my head canon is that Chloe Grace's character had a hunch that Denzel's character "changed her world" so she wouldn't be forced into that life anymore.
Denzel literally never gives a less than great performance, so you could check out anything in his filmography and probably enjoy yourself. Since you love heists I'll strongly recommend "Inside Man" which is a great movie about a criminal mastermind robbing a bank. But as a change of pace I'd also strongly recommend "Much Ado About Nothing," a beautiful, sexy Shakespeare romantic comedy where he gets to be charming and handsome playing a Prince - and Keanu Reeves is the villain!
Mr Robert McCall. As everyone else has remarked played by Edward Woodwood, who originally played an MI5 agent named Callan, during the 1960s. Callan was also a minimalist and had set ways and routines much the same as this McCall character.
37:01 _"There's something sort of Norman Rockwell about that shot."_ 🖼️ Good eye. I think it calls to mind, the painting *Nighthawks.* A famous canvas painting by the American artist _Edward Hopper._
I've watched all three equalizers and they all are great. I have my favorite but we keep it to myself. This what is now a trilogy & kind of reminds me of the original vigilante movie series Death Wish 1974-87.
I’m old enough to remember Denzel from St. Elsewhere…that’s a hospital tv show from the eighties, now if you’ll excuse me, there are some dang kids on my lawn.
Awesome you're doing the Equalizer series. You should check out "American Gangster" with Denzel and Crowe. Really excellent movie. There's also "Fallen" from 1998 which is a forgotten movie these days but I think its really unique with a great ending.
I think it's nice that you like the music of the great Harry Gregson-Williams. one of Hans Zimmer's former additional composers or programmers. Zimmer was one of the pioneers of bass-heavy film music, but Trevor Rabin, Steve Jablonsky, Harry Gregson-Williams and John Powell improved and refined it.
In the television series version of The Equalizer... Robert McCall was played by the late great British actor Sir Edward Woodward... Although Jen... You might remember him as the head of the (NWA) Neighborhood Watch Alliance... In the Movie Hot Fuzz. 😉👍

Yes! And you absolutely have to watch Denzel in "Man on Fire," it's 🔥🔥.
You have to complete the trilogy.
He won an oscar for best actor in "training day" It's in my top ten all time films...
I once saw a comment somewhere that said: "Where John Wick is a relentless sledgehammer, Robert McCall is a surgical knife." And I think it's the perfect way to describe Robert McCall in these movies.
I am not saying I disagree, but its kinda ironic, given the settings and weapons featured in this movie.
I mean, Wick does kill a guy with a pencil. Even Riddick used a teacup.
24:23 "Were you able to help him?"
"He didn't come for help; he came for permission."

Denzel Washington "TRAINING DAY"
Every time I see the discipline and kindness but with zero weakness of Denzel's character in this movie (like when he asks Ralphie how he was going to drag him out of a burning building), I feel it is the story of Coach Boone if instead of going to Football, he went to special forces.
Based on a TV series, late 70s early 80s. 2 is good, 3 is my favorite...!
@@geraldh3932 Cool, thanks...🙂
I still remember my father watching the TV series in the 80s. Antoine Fuqua did an amazing job with this whole trilogy. And Denzel is the perfect protagonist for the whole series.
18:49 "I like- Neither of them were afraid of the other one."
No. They each put up a sophisticated guise that the other saw right through.
This is one of his best movies. Thanks Jen keep up the great work. 👍 Hello from Pa USA 🇺🇸 ❤❤❤
Yes to Equalizer 2 and 3, also Inside Man (2006)
Classic TV series becoming films or film franchises and actually being successful is a rarity.

John Q
Denzel owns every role he's in.
When I was a little boy everyone called me Bobby. All through HS and college, I was Bob. I've been Robert since I turned 30. It fits me.
I live just outside OF BOSTON MA. My best friend was an extra in this movie.
Denzel doing it for the little guy he's Spiderman only he has a different set of skills 🙂 I use nail guns but none like the one he used holy moly that's dangerous AF , awesome reaction Jen hope you're having a blast with your sister and having a fantastic day
Denzel is brilliant. This trilogy is absolute gold. Love your vids Jen ❤❤❤
I think Denzel is my fav actor honestly. Have you seen Book of Eli? Training Day? He can play any role IMO.
The black Jaguar XJ6 used in the “interrogation” scene is a nod to the Edward Woodward series. It was one of the iconic TV cars at the time.
"Man on Fire" Denzel with Dakota Fanning is an Awesome watch
37:01 _"There's something sort of Norman Rockwell about that shot."_ 🖼️ Good eye. I think it calls to mind, the painting *Nighthawks.* A famous canvas painting by the American artist _Edward Hopper._
Yes, it's Hopper I was thinking of!
I love Denzel. He adds quality to any movie he's in. My favourite is Deja vu. It's crime/sci-fi
Yes on the whole Equalizer trilogy…
Also for Man on Fire…
The original 80;s serial was goo too, and a recent remake series where the main character was female, Robyn McCall, played by singer Queen Latifah!
I've watched all three equalizers and they all are great. I have my favorite but we keep it to myself. This what is now a trilogy & kind of reminds me of the original vigilante movie series Death Wish 1974-87.
Jen you must watch “Training Day”. You will absolutely love it. Denzel is incredible and won an Oscar.
I’m old enough to remember Denzel from St. Elsewhere…that’s a hospital tv show from the eighties, now if you’ll excuse me, there are some dang kids on my lawn.
Great Movie, Great Cast, Great Performances By Everyone In This Movie & As Always Love Seeing Your Reactions To All These Great Movie's 😊
10:46 Hey, Santa. ✌
Awesome you're doing the Equalizer series. You should check out "American Gangster" with Denzel and Crowe. Really excellent movie. There's also "Fallen" from 1998 which is a forgotten movie these days but I think its really unique with a great ending.
Love Fallen! Never seen American Gangster. So many movies, so little time. :)
Denzel Washington in :
“JOHN Q”
Denzel is a father that will do anything to help his sick son get an operation that will save his life!
In the television series version of The Equalizer... Robert McCall was played by the late great British actor Sir Edward Woodward... Although Jen... You might remember him as the head of the (NWA) Neighborhood Watch Alliance... In the Movie Hot Fuzz. 😉👍
i watched this today….and didn’t regret single moment of it
