I just attempted this an it’s sounds like something inside my reel shattered and it was moving with horrid grinding, then fully seized. What do I do now?

Wow I bought my first and last bait caster 15yrs ago. Did this same thing 2nd time I used it. Never used it again. Just backed the drag out and back In a few times and it is back in action. Thanks for the simple yet effective fix.

On point rather than just blabbering. Thank you so much. Was thinking my bait caster had issues and was planning to return. You helped me a lot.
I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well th-cam.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

I have taken the reel apart, oiled it and nothing so I was like I’ll look at TH-cam. It can’t be that simple.. I tried it and it worked!!!!! This reel has been sitting in a draw for over 20yrs. It’s was my little brothers and he has been gone for 19years. All I can say is THANK YOU for the video. This has made me soooo happy!! Can’t wait to fish with it this year!!!!
That’s awesome. So glad it fixed the issue. I would have hated for you to not be able to use that reel. I have a fly reel that was my grandfathers and it’s busted but sits in a shadow box

Glad it helped. Unfortunately it’s not a permanent fix, just try not to torque down the drag star, it’s usually what causes it. I’ve bought new ones that had the same problem. Thanks for watching.

Same here. Almost took a new rod/reel back after trying to spool line. This fixed the issue.

Glad i found your video. Opened a Pflueger Templar I bought on a sale many years ago and thought it was defective. Ridiculous that manufacturer did not include this part in the instruction manual. Anyway, I ended up wasting half a day with research and glad I found your video that solved my problem. Almost tossed it into the trash.
That’s awesome. I’ve been there to, bought a new Quantum Reel and it was like that, I took it back. If it does it again you’ll have to replace the bearing. Usually it’s just from have the drag over tightened.

Video was a lifesaver. My boys got new reels for Christmas and I finally got around to putting line on them. Was cranking the handle but the barrel wasn't spinning. Did even think to check the drag (my other reels that I've bought in the past were already set). Tightened up the drag and had them both full of line in a few minutes

That’s awesome, but honestly if it was me and it not a major inconvenience to take it back I would. Because this is only a temporary fix, it usually means the internal tension washers. Cupped or seizes to the bearing, it will happen again. Most of the time it was probably over tighten by someone at the store not by the factory. What model reel was it?

This fixes the problem but it doesn’t solve it. There’s something up with either the tention washers or drag washers I’ve recently been working on a Abu Garcia Pro Max 2 with this same issue. This method does work but only for a short time as it ruins your tention washers ( tention washers are cupped, when you clamp down your drag and leave it you end up flattening them). So when he’s saying “it feels like you’re gonna break something.” You kinda are. When it comes to the drag washers they wear out and seize to either the drive gear or the drag plate. My advice: get the right replacement parts, find the schematic for your reel, get some tools, open it, and fix it, and don’t leave your drag clamped down when storing for long periods of time.
It worked! Fixed my Kast King Mega Jaws, that had been skipping after casts and on quick hook sets. Thanks! 👍🎣

Had the same problem after picking out a backlash. My first caster (Curado 70) so I’ve had many. I watched your video. I loosen the star drag some and was trying to put the spool back in but couldn’t get the side plate on. I backed off the spool drag all the way to get the plate back on. The problem went away once it was back together.
The next step is going to be replacing the tension washers after a while especially if you leave your drag tight they get cupped and won’t adjust any more. Since you’ve already taken your apart that would be my next step. If it was a cheap reel I wouldn’t even bother but the Curados last forever. Should be able to get the parts online, have you ever replaced the bearings?
I just bought it brand new. Was trying to throw a small lead weight for practice so I had the tension pretty tight trying to control the backlash (weight barely dropping). Based on another video I changed to a heavier weight and so now I rarely backlash. I only sidearm cast with the starting loop. Still have trouble cast to the left of target.

Wow. So straight out of the box I have had reels do this, with the shimanos if it keeps doing it, send them an email and they’ll either sell you the new bearings cheap or send the to you for free.

I have the same reel. I’m like I didn’t spend $250 for this to happen. I fixed it on accident the first time but it just happened again and I was hoping to find out the answer so I could fix it for good. At least this video showed us a quick fix. Thank you brother!

Thank you for this! My brand new Baitcaster reel was not working, and the star drag adjuster seemed jammed. I put on heavy gloves and turned it counterclockwise as hard as I could and it finally "clicked", I then turned it forward and it is now moving freely again.

Thanks we appreciate the feedback, try not to over tighten your drag tension it’s generally the cause, if it happens again the internal washers might need to be replaced they get cupped. That’s why so many of them happen new from the store, from other people maxing the drag out.

Thanks for the the tip, it helped. I also had a issue with my bait caster where the line wouldn't drop. How I ended up fixing it was removing the tension cap off and taking some pliers and push in and out the pin, that seem to work. Maybe when they build them they don't lube the pins.
