I broke a string by doing a bend while learning Metropolis Part 1. The worst part is I broke the same exact string with the same bend a week later. So now every time I hear that unison part in Metropolis Part 1 I get flashbacks to the cringe.

@5:55 he’s not faking it, Tom Scholz (the guitarist from Boston, and the player in question) is using a highly modified echoplex that can loop short phrases like that tapping. Paul Gilbert also does a gag like that with his Boss DD3 :)
Yeah, I think it was quite clear that he did it on purpose. If he was actually faking, why would he just randomly take his hands off the fretboard, especially during a guitar solo when everyone is paying attention to him? It's clearly a part of the show.
Yeah Tom Scholz has quite a few gags like this to show off his incredible home built equipment. Not only a great guitarist but an ingenious engineer

Btw, the sound cut-out happened to me while doing a show several years ago, bad audio cable. Right in the middle of a damn solo. Thankfully our other guitar player was a professional and a gentleman who was able to pick up flawlessly where I dropped off. People thought we rehearsed that. I was like NOPE! But it was cool!
