I was intrigued by this video. I own a First Watt amp. It's the M2x. The "x" means that it's the DIY version of the M2, built by myself from plans made available by Nelson on the diyaudio forum. I've owned numerous tube and solid state amps. The M2x is the most satisfying amp I've ever owned. It does remind me of a tubed amp. It's presentation is smooth and rich, but in no way mushy. There is no sense of listening fatigue whatsoever. Paired with my Cary SLP-05 preamp the sound is immersive and natural. The fact that I put it together myself (with help) doesn't hurt. It really is a great amp.
I did find it interesting that, unless I missed it, I didn't hear you mention that First Watt amps run in Class A. That, along with Nelson's brilliant circuit designs, are one of the reasons they sound so good. The tradeoffs are lower power and heat. I've heard the Pass Labs electronics at various audio shows. Their sound is different than the First Watt. Both are great but the First Watt products are my preference. Thanks for talking about First Watt. I think their products are one of the great audio bargains out there.

Thanks for the comments. I meant to say the amp is class A ( as is the xa25 and 30.8), I must have forgotten while filming. I wish I had the skills to build my own amp.

Im so jealous. I sold my Omen Defs mkII before I owned an F8, the updated J2. That wouldve been a perfect match.

I love my Omen defs. I wish I did the updates before ZU discontinued selling the update kits.

I saw you went to a Luxman. Do you miss the J2 sometime later? I paired down system to simplicity of blue sound node, border patrol DAC SE and First Watt F7. I think dampening was modified to provide sense of 3D imaging. High end Class A have a house sound, but all are excellent and more similar than different.

I have to say I do not. Since I listen to every kind of msic, I am more happy with the Luxman. Now, if I only listened to jass or acoustic music, I would not even think of parting with the J2

When I can finally get to building a Pass amp, I wanna go with the Aleph 0. Very curious to how 100 Class A watts sound like on a power hungry set of towers.

I'd be curious how Hot a class A 100 watt amp would get. When you build the amp, check back with pics. Thanks for watching

Know anyone who ever used that J2 for bi-amping; like as tweeter and midrange amp? Class A amps are said to get hot. Is the J2 about the hottest running Class A amp you've used?

The J2 was not as hot as I was thinking it would be. However, My system is in a finished lower level and wide open space.

    I'm confused...Is it a "J"2 or a "V"2.........I Have a First Watt F5v2.....What is a "J"2?

I found the answer....Wasn't aware of the JFET = "J"....Great amplifiers!

I’m not saying this to be argumentative, but 25 watts into 8 ohms, 13 watts into 4? It’d have to be closer to aprox 40 watts or so into 4 ohms.

I've never owned a 4 ohm speaker. 25 into 8 ohms with 101 DB will blow me out of the room.

@@archifi9978 That’s not what I’m saying at all. If an amplifier puts out 25 watts into 8 ohms, it will come close to doubling its power into 4 ohms. You said 25 watts into 8 ohms and 13 watts into 4 ohms, which just isn’t true. I’m aware that 25 watts into a high sensitivity 8 ohm speaker will produce a high level of dB’s. My speakers are 8 ohms as well (I’ve never bought 4 ohm speakers either), and aprox 95dB sensitive. A 25 watt amp into 8 ohms would now put out closer to 40 watts if put into a 4 ohm load, if not more. Again, I’m not saying this to be difficult.

@@NickP333 No worries. I was just reading the specs from the manufacturer. Maybe it was a typo www.firstwatt.com/prod.html

@@archifi9978 Hmm…I looked at the First Watt site, like I have many times, and you are correct. My sincere apologies. It says the power is cut in half for certain 4 vs 8 ohm loads, but then almost doubles for other models. I wonder what that’s about. You were only saying what it states on the site. A friend of mine owns a couple First Watt amps (don’t remember which), and I’m going to try and get over to his place soon to measure their 8 vs 4 ohm loads out of nothing but curiosity. I can of course let you know the results if you’re interested. Thanks, Dale.

@@NickP333 Please do. I know reading other specs through the years, the output increases with lower Ohm number. However, Nelson Pass may have some funky design that changes that. Please do report back. Thanks
