I came across this video and was shocked when I saw the window sticker. My father owned university dodge. We moved to California
From Detroit in 1960. My Father opened University Dodge in down town Palo Alto on high St. He then built the university Dodge dealership on El Camino and Arastradero rd. The showroom was a 5 point Chrysler star. My Sister had a Dart Charger in high school. We used to get demo’s to drive. I was 7 in 1965. My father will be really happy to see this video. He’s now 96 and still drives.

I went with my parents to Claude Short Dodge in Santa Monica CA when my mom was looking for a new car. It was spring of 1964. On the showroom floor was a Dart GT with the just introduced 273 V8. It was gold with a black "spear" trim on the side and a matching gold, bucket seat interior. My dad wanted the 225 Slant 6 but I persuaded my mom to go with the V8. We drove it home that afternoon. They had it for about 5 years and my older brother inherited it from them. A couple of years later, I inherited it from him. I drove it for a couple of years, including a trip from LA to Oregon and back. I subsequently sold it to a friend of mine. In all the years we had it, it was completely trouble free. I mean ABSOLUTELY trouble free. When my mom gave it to my brother, she bought a 1970 Dodge Challenger with a 383 V8. She was the original hot-rodder in our family. That '65 is unusual in that it's the first year without the "pushbutton" auto trans shifting. Also, the four barrel carb was not available in '64.

I owned a Dart Charger back in 1971. I raced it at Dragway 42 in West Salem, Ohio. It came from California. It was the National record holder in HOA class in AHRA. It ran mid 14's. It had all the special trim and wheels. Sadly the next guy I sold it to hit a pole and totaled the car. That started my many years of racing a 340 Duster and Demon 340 in Super Stock. Mopars rule!

Lou I love the fact you take interest in these old Mopars . I have a family connection to them. My father promised to buy each of us kids a car when we graduated from high school. My sister graduated in 1965 and she received a brand new 65 Plymouth Valiant convertible. I remember seeing the original sales document years later and it was well under $2000.00 new. She drove it until 1971 when my parents bought a new Chrysler and gave her their 68 Plymouth Fury 2 dr hardtop. I have pictures of her getting the car and I remember riding it as a kid. These cars were very affordable transportation. To bad not many have survived.

My father had a Dodge dealership and in 1965 D-Darts were delivered to dealers with performance upgrades that included Racer Brown valve springs, a hotter Racer Brown camshaft, a Holley 4160 four-barrel carburetor, Doug Thorley headers (in the trunk for owner installation), and a low-restriction air cleaner. His was the same colors as yours but with a 4 speed. He had this car in the center of the show room. Seeing your beautiful car brings back LOTS of memories. Thanks

OK, this is great. My 3rd grade teacher (Mrs Striker) had a Dart in a metallic tan finish. I had a '69 Charger from '77 to ''80 when it got totalled while parked. A good friend found a Dart from this era and had the slant 6 modded to specs from a Hot Rod mag article using a 4bbl carb. In all this time, i've never heard of a Dart Charger!!! What a cool story.

These were really pushed by the west coast Dodge dealers, and it is true they were all done at the LA plant. A lot of excitement was in the air on the forthcoming Dodge Charger for 1966. So this was kind of a promotional car. It was never a factory car per se so that is why most people have never heard of it.
I've had my 1968 Charger since I was a kid, and when I lived in an apartment in Huntington Beach, a very nice neighbor guy admired my car and he would come by when I was washing it and we would talk Mopars. He said he just saw a Dart Charger and was surprised at the find. I assumed he meant one of those South American Chargers that were based on the A-Body that had perhaps been imported here, but he said no, it was an American car.
Unbelievably, a few weeks later he knocked on my door. He said, you won't believe this, but they have a Dart Charger at the wrecking yard, check this out! And he had that very wheel center/emblem in this video. I held that item in my hand and could not believe it. Further, I could not believe that someone was wrecking it!
Very cool car. They are not fast (9 second 0-60) but the get up and go OK and I think they look very cool!

My friend has a 1965 Dodge Dart that has been in his garage for 50 years or so. He says the V-8 engine will go 120 mph in a snap. The car otherwise is rusted badly. I am pretty sure he would take 250 bucks for the engine or the whole thing. He is not going to pull the engine as an 83 year old guy. The frame is broke in half.

Wow, awesome car. Funny thing I took a 273 4 barrel out of a wrecked 65 dodge dart GT and put it in my 73 Dodge Charger cause the 318 smoked like a freight train. Worked out really good but it would not spin the tires for anything. I am sure the 15x10 Keystone raiders and the 275x60x15 tires didn't help.

The standard engine was the slant six. I don't know if the 170cid was available in the gt but I know the 225cid was. There were two versions of the 273 V8. The two barrel at 180 hp then four barrel at 235 hp. In 1965 the 318 was still based on the poly head block.
