FORGOTTEN 1965 Dart V8 Four Speed - First Drive and Power Shifting!

  • “Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong." - 2 Corinthians 12:10
I have to admit, this 1965 Dart GT has REALLY impressed me! With a 318, 4 speed, and 3.23 sure grip, it is a riot on the street in a modest package. Tag along as we go through all the issues of bringing it back to life! Think it'll power shift?

This car needs to be restored. My brother had one like this in the late 60's. I was maybe 14 at the time but I loved that car. It was white from the factory but he repainted it a metallic green / gold color. He added cragar mags and had high jackers to lift the rear end. It was the cockiest car around town. I lost my brother a few years ago but watching this video brings back some great memories.

I owned a 65 Dart Charger back in 1971. It was stock when I purchased it. 273 Hipo 235 HP with the 904 Trans. I rebuilt the engine and Trans and installed a 8-3/4" rear-end. I drag raced it in KOA AHRA and set the National Record. It originally came from CA. Solid car and no rust. Paid $500 for it. Sold it in 1975 and the guy wrapped it around a pole. Totaled the car. Today, it would have been restored.

I think Old Red needs to be saved: fix the rust issues in the body and floor, install front discs and a dual master cylinder, better seats and some interior improvements. and if you can get that kind of scratch from a 318 of unknown quality, just imagine what a mildly built 340 would do? Back in my youth, the older brother of a friend of mine had a '65 Dart GT with a 273 (I think) and a four speed. And the brother wanted to trade his car straight across for my '69 Plymouth Valiant 2-door post (Slant-6 and automatic). We never got the deal done, and seeing how much fun Dylan had driving his GT, I wish I had made the trade.

That fuel pump needed replacing any way. I laugh about the fuel line, I remember back in the seventies I rebuilt my motorcycle engine, I checked everything over, but it would not start, my brother helped to try to roll start it. We pushed and pushed and nothing, we checked the gas -AGAIN- and pushed and kicked some more. I was getting hot and sweaty and so pissed off. Finally, my brother said we should check the plug, he bent down and laughed. We - me- had never put the spark plug wire on the plugs. It cranked right up and ran like a champ after hours of messing with it.

When I was your age (likely literally), my father was given his mother's car (my grandmother), a 65 Dart - slant 6 with a 3 on the tree. He let me drive it for an entire semester to college in Tulsa, and I was blessed by the experience. Powder blue, 13 in rims, et al. This video definitely took me back!!!

Anything is worth fixing if you want/love it enough, my '66 Dart GT we build into my "Yard Dart" had about the same level of rust but had the added hill-billy package where they torched out the trans tunnel and it wasn't even a stick shift car, just a 273 4 barrel auto car. I honestly don't blame you for not wanting to get involved in restoring that car, I just picked up a 64 Polara 500 383 4 speed console car and the more carpet I peel out, the more of the floor comes with it, but I will fix it, even if I have to get creative with patch panels. That is a very cool '65 if you want to sell it, I know someone who'd be interested.

As it stands now, it might be a high 15 sec car in the 1/4. With a good clutch, more engine tuning, and a pair of 9 inch slicks I'll bet it'll do low 14s at around 95 mph. And that is BB B body territory.

That car has a lot of character. I remember seeing a few of them in the early ‘70’s. It would look great with a repaint of the Tor-red, jacked up in the rear a bit and some fat tires on the rear, skinnies on the front with classic centerlines or 5-star rims. Yeah, 1965 wasn’t the most attractive year for Dodge, but it has some great charm.

My first car in the late eighties was a well worn 65 Dart 270 2 door post, 225 slant six and torqueflite automatic. Actually same color red as in this episode. Drivetrain was bullet proof and was a good highway car, weak link was the front end parts, same problem as Mustangs and Chevy II models of that era.

I would replace the floors and any other damaged structure. go thru the suspension, steering, brakes to get it completely safe to drive, fix up the interior some, maybe some performance mods to the engine and just enjoy it. Not even worry about the body. It's a perfect driver/ ratty muscle car. Not every old car/truck needs to be a perfectly restored example to enjoy them.
I grew up hearing stories of my dad's red 65 Dart GT convertible that he had when he was in the army. He said the front end liked to lift at 90 mph and the steering would get very light. He traded it in on a brand new red 1969 Dart GT convertible that had the black stripe on the rear, when he got back from Vietnam. It was some special edition/prepped by some speed shop. It had some very steep rear end gears and a Hurst shifter that sounds like a dual gate by the way he described it. But he said he couldn't keep rear tires on it. The first night he had it. He pulled out of gas station, stomped the old go pedal to the floor and left two stripes on the pavement for over a block. And then got pulled over by the cops and got his first of many tickets in it. He said the 69 was a blast to drive but he always regretted getting rid of the 65 GT.

You can install a 318 with a mild towing cam to replace the 273 which was an economy engine, a step up from the 225 Slant Six. The 318 will run on regular gas and be a vast improvement over the 273. You already have the right manual transmission and rear axle for the 318 engine. We did this modification to my friend's 1968 Dodge Dart many years ago. Ran like a champ.

I had a 66’ Valiant with a 318 swapped in, 3 speed automatic with shift kit, backed by a limited slip rear end. Very fast little car. Put some hood pins on that thing, because sooner than later, that hood is going to rip up and block your view out the windshield, lol

Maybe replace the floors with some washer and dryer material and a few self tapers . Take one from junkyard digs and pole barn garage . Build it on a budget right and get it back on the road.

What fun...Runs good for being in a coma.I don't think I would be throwin' too many more full throttle shifts, the clutch in that car was weak when it was new...I would say you're really pushin' it!

that same country road is featured in TONS of TH-cam videos...
Every time someone is speeding or doing a burnout, it's THAT ROAD! 😂
