    3 years later this is still the best build block build video on the whole internet. I watched every second of every video.. Man I was so scared to tear into my 454 big block in my 1970 Chevelle but man you gave me confidence to get to it.. I might use everything you used unless you have feedback on what you would’ve done differently? Fantastic videos & fantastic reason for doing the videos. I am glad you got to do it with your dad!

      @@2carpros awesome videos just had a question when you adjusted total timing was your timing advanced hooked up or not? and wat was the initial timing set to, some people say 4 or 8 or even 12 at idle with vaccum hose disconnected. Thanks

      Can you explain the "35 degrees" on the timing light as it relates to the 0 degree mark on the timing tab? What are you setting to 35 degrees advance if the harmonic balancer line is at 0? My stock application calls for timing to be set at 4 degrees BDC...does that mean I need 39 degrees? I'm confused...

    Nice series, as a long time BBC builder, user, tuner and getting long in the tooth, im sure your father/grandfather would be proud, I know I would....
    One misconception is that 35 degree timing thing, a low of lower compression ( under 11 to 1) open chamber BBC combustion chamber functionality isn't on par with newer fast burn LS/LT style heads ect..
    I've literally seen best power on 41-42 degrees with similar castings to what you just used especially in the 10 to 1 and under range...to accomplish this without electronics ( folks don't be scared to spend a few more dollars for a MSD programmable ignition box, your already used to buying the 6AL) buy using custom degree limiting bushings...
    So in his example he set his timing at 9 degrees idle and it wasn't 35 total timing...so he moved it up till it was....which increased the initial...the bushing in the counter weights limit the amount of centrifugal advance and the springs control the rate..
    With larger cams, big ports and low compression what you can do is run more initial and limit the total with bushings and the spring sets your rate....( how fast timing comes in vs rpm, in his example it was all in by 3500rpm)...
    They can be super finicky on timing both for idle and cruise quality along with peak power and torque...often surprisingly on the older designs you can see big gains as long as your hot octane limited ( aka you don't have knock) on up there in timing...just me but most of the ones I build performed best around 37-38 degrees beyond that its a law of diminishing returns...just my 2 cents....
    Having optimum timing will make chasing those carb settings he spoke of MUCH easier...and don't let anyone tell you that with enough work ( surprised he didn't go over power valve with the low of vacuum) and knowledge you can literally get it to idle, cruise and WOT with a wideband near EFI precision.....
    I use a home converted to sequential MPI street ram intake with a F1A-94 procharger thru a 4l80e OD lockup trans for many years but sometimes I miss the carb tinkering, drilling ect...it can be done the carb was forgiving and doesn't get as much respect as it deserves

      Actually on re-read, way to much info and preachy sounding sorry everyone...
      I had built an LS for a 69 Camaro and was going to swap mine, then thought how about I maximize the old Dinosaur...aka high velocity small oval ports with a street ram and sequential MPI using a super efficient centri with no intercooler and 4l80e with 3.00 gears and I can cruise at 74mph in the mid 20mpg....
      It just pleased me to see someone like you remember these things can be good engines and even modernized to be durable and effective...this 52 year old block has held 1200hp 500 hits....STOCK block with studs

Thank you for being informative and detailed. My wife has a ‘70 chevelle with a 454 motor in it, very good looking car. It’s not a true SS but that’s okay. There’s a lot of bugs to address and the motor is one. She’s thinking of buying a new motor for $13k. I haven’t priced checked all the parts you’ve used in the rebuild but I’m leaning towards rebuilding it the way you did yours. The motor is out of a truck as well. I forget the code and year tho. Sorry, I’m writing a novel but I’m trying to be brief but it’s hard. 🤣 Would it be cheaper to buy the $13k motor or rebuild it like this?

    I watch this before I go to sleep. It’s like a cool bed time story. I did rebuild mine, I still seen temp spiking when ac on. I called the dealership and they said I should have an auxiliary fan up front from factory. That’s what what I was missing

    What horse power were you able to achieve with the 454 rebuild? Also, where can i find a parts list for you 454 build? Thank you for any info.

      I did put it on the dyno in the car, we didn’t maker power though, just to tune it. It made 425 at tire but again we weren’t there to make power. This is my personal car and I didn’t want to beat on it. Thanks for watching!

    Awesome!! Question: I want to change pistons for less compression in my big block. It has 25 quarter mile runs. If cylinders look clean no scratches can I get away with just a hone? Great series bro

    Hello watched the series a few times and moved onto the LS rebuild, In that series you mentioned "problems" with getting the the big block to fit into the camaro.Do you mind revisiting this series and let me/us know what issues you ran into any how you over came them.

      Sure Neil, I can go into that now. So with the gen 1 Camaro, there are two parts that make it possible. GM originally designed the car for a straight six or a small block Chevy. Then later on in the life of the car decided to stuff a big block in it. The first part is the heater core box, you need the "big block" box. The next and this one threw me for a loop for months. The big block and small block have different engine stands. Not motor mounts but the things the motor mounts bolt to. The big blocks are tiled toward the passenger's side and a little forward to it can fit. I assumed they were the same they aren't. That was the final piece that lets the big block fit in the Camaro.     I rebuilt my 454 by watching your video but I’m having trouble finding the right headers for my car I have a 1977 Chevy impala, can you recommend some headers that work

      I just looked around for awhile and didn't make any headway. I'd call doug thorley headers and tell them what you are doing and they might be able to point you in the right direction. Sometimes they might have something that will work with a little modification. Baring that, you'd be looking into making yours custom or having and exhaust shop do it for you. Thanks for watching!

      @@2carpros Absolutely LOVED the series. I just finished rebuilding a 454 in my boat. No training or experience (or professional help...), but I did it! The $5K estimate looks WAY off to me. The heads are $1200 each, then add intake manifold, carb, cam, timing gear set, distributor, pistons, fuel pump, machine shop fees, water pump, lots of parts from Summit Racing, etc. Even if the old engine was free I'm guessing $10K+ cost.

    Hey quick question. When adjusting your fuel idle mixture, if you move one screw a certain amount, don't you have to do the remaining 3 the exact amount such as 1/2 turn out for all 4 screws? This is what I have always heard as well as what Holley recommends. From your video, it seems like you randomly turned each screw to all different adjustments.

      Hey Mark, a lot of the footage is edited down to make it interesting. You really don't want to watch me adjust idle fuel mixture for 20 minutes. It is honestly more of an art than a science and I still adjust it to this day based on large weather changes. Thanks for watching!

    Followed your videos to the tee. Started the motor and I have smoke out of the breathers. Any ideas? Am I totally screwed with blowby or could it go away with a little bit of driving.

      Okay so a new engine might generate a little bit of smoke and will go away after it breaks in a bit. But if it is larger plumes of smoke then something is wrong. A few things come to mind in descending order of commonality. First you might have put one or more piston rings on upside down or not clocked correctly. Second the machine shop could have machined the holes too big and you have too much clearance. The last thing that comes to mind is if the machine work doesn't have the cylinder bore as a perfect circle.     Do you keep the distributor vacuum plugged all the time? What is it's roll in relation to timing?

    My 454 doesn’t have any timing marks. How can I properly do the timing? It has a cam but I don’t know the specs of the cam and I think I need timing adjustments because my 454 stutters /bogs when I floor it and can only ease into the gas pedal to bring it up to speed. Thanks!

      It has to have timing marks. Clean the damper off and take a closer look. They maybe super faint. That's why I colored ours in white. Thanks for watching Marco!

      @@2carpros thank you. I cleaned it up and found it was the metal tab with pointer but need to see if the balancer has marks now. But I’ll have to find tdc and see if the distributor rotor is pointing at the number 1 spark plug? Then make the mark at 0 and do the timing form there? The 454 has a cam with I don’t know the specs. Do you usually retard or advance when there’s a cam? Or just have to drive it and see where the power band is? Thanks !

      I mean I have seen 350's making 500-550 horsepower. Really depends how much money you want to put into it and how high your want the compression. Also how big of camshaft and lifter ratio you run. It is usually easier to just build a big block if you want big power. Or a LS we just did a whole 5.3L LS build where we made 500hp NA.       Set the timing light to desired timing and advance or retard the distributor until the flash is at 0 while the engine is at 3k rpm or so. That's the easiest if you ask me. Thanks for watching!
