I agree, that was some fast response from those boat captains, saw it and got there in under 5 minutes, tossing out life vests, top kudos for the boat captains.

To lose both engines over one of the most densely populated cities in the world and then land it on water fully laden with fuel and nearly hitting a bridge, one of the finest pieces of flying ever seen.

It was like "Oh shit it's going to crash in the middle of the city and kill thousands" then "Oh shit it's going to crash into a bridge, collapsing it and killing hundreds" then "Oh shit it's going to cartwheel or break apart when it hits the water" then "Oh shit they're all going to drown".

Sully and his crew did a great job, but those ferry captains deserve a shitload of credit too. They were on top of that plane almost immediately, tossing PFDs and starting their rescue. Respect!

EVERYONE. The pilots, Flight Attendants, Ferry captains, EMT's Air Traffic Control and Port authority did what everyone hopes they would do. Sadly many organizations world wide wouldn't have pulled this off so perfectly. They did what so many colleges and organizations hate most. They thought on their feet and in some cases said "screw the procedures, this is the real world and we have to adapt."
Critical thought in these cases saves lives because this is the real world. No procedural checklist would've saved that plane. In fact Co-Captain Skiles has said on more than one occasion there was something to the effect of 25 items on the checklist. He got to like 10-12 on that list and they were already in the water.
Sometimes the neat little plans we make get shattered by reality. It's only then you see the true potential of great people.

Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, is no ordinary Pilot, landing in water is not as easy as it sounds. Hats of to Him and the crew as well as all involved in the rescue. The plane landed at 150 mph, If he didnt do it gently the plane would have disintegrated on impact. He was an F4 Phantom Pilot and had flying experience since the age of 14!!!
Salutations for a job well Done!!!!

It's impressive how quickly the ferries and tugs made it to the scene, from this footage it looks like the crash site was swarming with boats within only a few minutes. Hudson River's probably one of the best places to ditch if that's your only option- protected water and plenty of help floating around. Pun intended.

On the timestamp at 8:25:47 the plane is on screen, with smoke in the air.
Doors are open and the first person is seen at 8:25:56
By 8:26:11 the smoke is almost cleared.
The plane was barely stopped in the water when the steward/ess was out of their chairs and popping the doors and chutes.
By 8:29:30 the first boat is arriving. About 4 minutes after "landing" the first boat arrives. That's incredible.

Definitely life jackets, they were also tossing them over to the other wing; and when each person came aboard the ferries, they took the jacket and tossed it right back for the next guy. You can see on the first ferry, a few people running around the bottom level gathering jackets from all of the seats passing them up to the nose. Great teamwork and quick thinking.

In addition to saving everyone on board's life, the pilot was also completely calm in this situation. That really shows something about the guy. He showed no fear of death, and spent all his time working on a solution to save everyone on board. One minute spent panicking and this could've ended way differently. Hats off to you Mr. Sullenberger, you are a true hero.

Duhya. I know your comment is now a year old... But I still haven't seen the movie. It more than irks me that most "real life hero" or "based on the true story" movies are wholly inaccurate, take too much dramatic license, insert love drama or angst. It really gets me that the people who actually DID something worthwhile or courageous, get replaced by actors who may only be able to recite lines while looking good.... It really gets me that the actors get paid millions to make a damn movie, while the people who actually saved lives MIGHT get a "consultant" fee. They normally don't get to fly all over the world in expensive clothes attending film festivals and collecting royalties. Sully may be something of an exception, I don't know. But I can say I will never PAY to see a drama based on real life.

I watched this unfold live on tv, back in the day. I was horrified that yet another horrible disaster was unfolding in NY after 9/11. When it became apparent that people survived, and later that everyone survived, left me with such a feeling of awe. Then later, when politicians and bureaucrats began trying to make Sully a fall guy, I was infuriated! Still am. Pilots deserve our respect and support. This event in NY will forever be remembered by me, and I wish all passengers and crew all the best.

It was amazing. The fact that the plane did not split up in the water is impressive, says all about the crew skill. Someone could think that landing on water is sort of "easy", but's its not at all: hitting water at high speed with a place more easily results in structural failure than not. Really, great job.

it's not that surprising if you think about it. the plane is made from aluminum, a relatively light metal, and has a giant bubbles in it (the cabin, cockpit, and cargo hold) making it lighter. most big ships are made from steel, which is 3 times more dense than aluminum, and float just fine.

I want to know about the camera! Are they manned 24/7 to zoom & watch action on the docks / water, or is there cool software to monitor activity.

The ferrys made fast timing to get to the plane,4:00, but you need to consider their huge boats had to approach very slowly so not to create waves. That was fast and smart thinking, waves would have burried the wings, and knocked passengers off, but they kept their cool, jst amazing rescue by all involved

Plane captain and flight crew were awesome, true, but I'm just as impressed with the guys on those ferries that rushed to the plane so quickly.

Within 3 minutes of door-open, first boat visible to pax (anti-panic). First boat grabs pax in less than 5 minutes! Second boat on-scene in 7 minutes. Five-plus boats in under 10 minutes.
    TREMENDOUS RESCUE RESPONSE!!!!

@ObsidionX no, the wings provide the lift that enables the plane to glide, the RAT provides power to essential instruments when the engines fail.

What gets me is that a couple of the passengers on this plane tried suing the airline. One of them citing that they "...hadn't been complete since nearly dying". As if it was the airline's fault birds flew up in the engines. How "complete' would those passengers be if that pilot hadn't the balls of solid rock and the knowhow to land in the water without the plane breaking up?
Hat's off to this pilot. Absolute hero.

8:25 P.M.? Another security camera footage I saw had a time stamp of around 3:30 P.M. Looks like the guy who set up Con Ed's CCTV system forgot to change the time zone to Eastern.
