Tip #8 (from Canada): keep your cold equipment in a closed bag when back home or in any warm environment to avoid moisture outside and inside your camera & lenses! Wait a couple of hours before reaching your equipment to let it warm up. Tip #8 bis: remove your memory cards before tip #8 to have access to them!
Stunning pictures. I've spent many hours in that sort of weather watching rally cars. I always take a cut up piece of karrimat type insulation rolled up on the rucksack, great for sitting on (especially if there's a tree to rest your back against), cover it with a garbage bag for wet muddy conditions. For food we carry "stage bags", simple small food bags with a piece of cheese, fruit cake (Yorkshire thing)and a mini Mars bar, three of those per two hours is about right. Instead of tea/coffee we take a food flask with lumpy home made vegetable stew, it's warm and filling. Stay safe and well.
Foil windscreen reflector to lie or sit on,hand warmers prolong the life of your batteries and keep you warm, small foam sit pad,you can lay your camera on it ,protects it and insulates from ground, merino wool baselayer.
Outstanding shots dude. My tips would be a storm shelter (just in case), extra food and spare gloves and hat. I always take tomato soup for lunch, lovely on a cold day.
This makes nature even more wonderful. Look at how much you had to put on just to spend a few hours there meanwhile they don't seem troubled. Thank you as always.
A beautiful glimpse into the life of wild animals through the passion of photography. So many people see them as sport or food. Well done, great to see the mix of through the lens video and final photos.
Outstanding as usual! I should know a lot of this from Canadian winters but staying still waiting for wildlife is a lot different than active winter activities and, you're right. It's a very different thing to prepare for.
Good shout about letting folk know where youve gone, that kind of weather catches a lot of people out. I like the look of the Mitts, great idea with the opening flap so you dont have to remove them.👍
Oooooo I could feel the cold love the ptarmigan and the sitting hare , we see lots of them in Norfolk when out with the Norfolk mountain rescue service.....lol
Amazing Scottish Highland Wildlfe photography captured here, Espen. You looked very cold braving the elements but I’m sure it was well worth it in getting the images that you managed to come away with. I’m sure that keeping warn is key and so important in these extreme weather conditions. Awesome music as well. Thank you for taking us along with you on your amazing adventure from our armchair.
Some wonderful shots! Thanks for sharing. I was shooting in a snow storm a few weeks ago and I'd add tip number 8 -- check for snow drifts in your lens hood as they can block your shot :)
You managed to get some really good images Espen, well done. I really don't know how you spotted that first Hare, that was snuggled down behind the boulder. Bionic eyes ??? Changing footwear half way up a mountain doesn't seem like good planning to me. lol
Hi Espen great video and also great images and I'm sure your tips are sound for those people brave ( or daft enough depending on your point of view). I'm afraid at my age with my health issues I wouldn't last five minutes out in that but fair play to those can. Until next time take care and stay safe my friend.
Nice work Espen. Glad you got some good pics for your days work. Also good to see the hares and ptarmis getting into their winter woolies. With so much electronics now in the lens itself , is this an area that needs more protection from the cold. Does any of the gear need "winterizing". ? and lastly How would you rate the Muckboots for keeping your feet warm ?
Thanks! Camera performed great I got it covered in snow at times. Batteries drained, but kept some warm in my pocket. Managed to shoot a full day with 4 batteries which also included one for the vlogging camera em1ii.
I'm curious, what do you do if you have to use high ISO due to low light? Like this morning at 8 am, I had to use 12800 ISO due to the lack of light with 5.6 lens and got an absolute ton of noise in the image making in unusable, using an R5.
Scottish highlands, bagpipe music, and Espen trekking and searching for wildlife.. nothing finer. The photos are amazing..
Thank you Jan 🙂

This is one of your best videos ever, Espen!
Thanks Rich!
That final image is a beauty.
We very rarely get snow here in Pembrokeshire and I certainly miss it.
Thanks very much Robert 🙂 sadly less of it most places
transitions are cool.

I definitely encountered that 😅👍

😅 the muck boots keep me warm when lying on the hill for over 6 hours, but I’d rather walk the 1.5h up the hill in hiking boots.
Virkelig flotte bilder, Espen! Er noe spesielt med å ta bilder i snø og vinterlige forhold synes jeg 👍🏼
Ja, verkligen. Bästa hälsningar från ett snölöst Skåne!
Takk for det Kjell! Helt enig, favoritt tiden min å ta bilder 🙂
Top shots as per... 😉
Thank you Stuart 🙂
So beautiful! Congratulations!
Thank you 🙂

Thank you Avik 🙂
Awesome!! 😊💕
Thank you James 🙂
Pro Tip: Preheat your thermos with boiled hot water 30 mins ahead of filling it with your hot beverage. Then it'll hold longer in the field.
👍
Epic!
Thank you Andrew 🙂
Great video, Espen! Have you done one that describes all the cold weather gear you use?
Thanks Chris! I’m actually working on one, hopefully have it ready in a week or two 👍🙂
Filming and to photograph in these conditions: How to manage this? Great photo’s BTW!
Thanks 🙂

Love my Muckboots! Best kit in winter. Gear held up fine as is, though batteries drain fast.
mükemmel video💫💫💫💫💫
Great Vid, how did the Camera hold up. heard that batteries get punished in these cold conditions

Yeah it can be tricky, I try and use really low shutter speeds and shoot burst in the hopes that I get some sharp ones.
Nydelig film 😁
Takk for det broder 👊
👍👍👍
i want to be your student:"
Do you have a population of wolves, or bears in that country?
No unfortunately they've been hunted to extinction years ago
@@EspenHelland Very sad. But, your videos of the area and the wildlife behaviors are great. Thanks.
Such a shame when the video ends!
