I’m very late to this party. Here’s my comment. Wes is probably the most scrupulously honest mechanic I’ve ever seen in my life. If I would have dented that water pump pulley, even on my own vehicle, I probably would have knocked it back the other way with a hammer and forgotten about it. The fact that Wes bothered to grind it, braze or weld it, then make an arbor to true the grooves on a lathe staggers me. That’s a level of care that I didn’t know existed anywhere. My hat is off to Wes!!
That's the good stuff, spray it in your eye, your son is adorable, love the vids, my daughter gets into my tools when I take her to grandmas in my truck.
Worked on Fedex trucks for a couple years. They didn't baby them either. Every part I can remember changing came off as easy as your water pump . Hard to resist the sweet song of the hammer. Ill just give it a couple taps. She's coming off one way or the other ;-)

Well I'm a big fan of percussive maintenance, but I got a little too carried away and pulled a millwright... When I worked in the truck shop we had a 75 ton press. A few times we would set something up at 75 tons of pressure and hose it down with oil and go home for the night. In the morning it was a scavenger hunt for all the pieces.

Enjoyed this episode immensely, especially your discussion about shifting that rig. For many years I drove a Mack, five speed, four axle ranges, and no synchro. Double clutch always, matching the rpms to go from one range to the next.

That whole truck cab will be rusty and gone and that motor will still run. Mechanical injection no egr, no dpf it won't win any races but it will get you there. Miss the days when things were more simple, I'm a new subscriber, you really put out some good video's thanks for your time.
These certainly are simple engines. If you know what you are doing, you can inframe overhaul one of these in less than 20 hours.
Nice old Intershmashable, they never got any love just beat like a rented mule. Villages and towns used them and they would hire an idiot that was related to someone to run it and after beating them a few years they "are now experts" on beating them. People buy them and try to drive them as fast as they can. A little vinegar and water in a spray bottle helps kids learn to leave them alone. Works for a cat that will not leave you alone and you really do not want it ran over. A japanese friend of mine from college talked something about a short 4 but not sure what he was saying often. You already sold that but if you go to 2nd for a second then go to reverse she may be happier. Thanks for the video to watch.

I started using a submersible pump in the coolant catch tray for putting the coolant back in the system. It works great and no mess or spills.

As far as the “careless mistake” goes with beating the life out of the water pump pulley. It may have taken some extra time to repair the damage the bolt resizer did but given how hard it was to get off the truck it must have at least been satisfying to swing away right? There’s always room for mechanic revenge on rust in my view.

I love old Internationals too. I have a '92 4700 with an Allison Automatic and 265,000 miles that will outwork a Ford or Chevy cab and chassis any day of the week. She's slow but she never quits.

Dude, try this one out. Way better than soap.
Squirt the hose end with carb cleaner and slide it on. You have to slide it on within...meh....about 10 seconds or it dries. Truly plenty of time. It works great!
I always enjoy your videos. Don't know how you got so knowledgeable about vehicles (and electronics too). Just to say I'd have liked to see the machining of those pulleys too.

Hey Wes, I sell Henderson Products and ice equipment, every now and then I’ll come across a township or small town which still operates that very truck... 5 speed and all. Generally once the old timer who oversaw the equipment retires, those trucks are immediately put on Gov Deals. Lol
But with that, long live the venerable DT466!

Believe it or not there is a scientific method to the heat and hammer. It changes the state of the metal. I learn so much watching videos. Wes you're the best. You should have been a shop teacher.
That stack of v-belts is ridiculous. Too bad they didn't use a serp setup, but this is probably before they became so popular. "Tensioning nightmare" indeed.

Work at a Peterbilt dealer. 90% of the time we use aftermarket radiators, CAC, and condenser from Northern. Pretty rarely do we have any complaints. But mostly its the $700 price tag vs $2500 for OEM
LED shop lighting upgrade time. Nice truck looks like a road service truck for the county or state. There are a lot of belts my thoughts as a non giant truck owner is how strong and well these machines are built it is maybe why I always want one when I see them but the work you put into them watching you on this channel is showing what goes on under the hood. WOW a 6 pulley monster wonder what that weighs. Nice pretty new part in-house paint. Best part is the end when you take her out for a drive it looks fun.
Hi Wes. The recent memories of a stuck crankshaft pulley come flooding back 😀 I was saying out loud replace the studs with bolts, glad you thought of it for next time. Word of warning, machine off the first three or four threads. If things get really pear shaped it avoids the bolt(s) becoming an ugle addition to the stuck pulley.
I remember our school bus had a big V8 up front, synchromesh 2 to 5 with a split axle. The driver would lightly clutch for the split and double clutch the downshift with a stab of the accelerator as he passed through neutral. To my young ears, it just all sounded awesome. Thanks for refreshing that long forgotten memory.
When I was a kid we had an International Blue Bird bus that was automatic with a DT466. But, maybe once a month, we would have the "loaner" bus that was a 5 speed with a 2 speed axle. My bus driver was definitely comfortable with it. I remember a lot of grinding!
Wes , I have never seen a pulley with so many grooves , glad you didn't have to buy one of those .
Me too. I doubt it's even available. I did see a used one on eBay for $200.
That was the standard pulley on that engine for on highway use. Lots of auxiliary equipment was run off of those grooves.

I'd say it's been a normal winter. It's mid January. It should be cold and snowy.
Runs and drive good - still needs some work on the bed you said I believe - shifts good - sounds good also - for a 35-year-old county/state truck not bad

I usually leave the belts tight until after I remove the fan bolts . the belts hold the pulies tight without having to fight the spinning when loosening the bolts
Loved my 1754 juice brakes...6 speedx2...thoe it had a dt360A...i had to do a engine stap. Wich i went up to a dt466..no one told me till after i got a replacement dt360...plowing type w live shaft out the hole in the radiator after cooler was the hole radiator not a side by side type..3000 rpm till you get it done...loved the hills
I had 9500 G M C had a coolant filter truck ran good but no heat , changed filter and got heat in cab. Good old days when fall came you put a light in the cab went out side and pluged every hole that you saw light through L O L .
We called that shift pattern a working 5 speed - I was hauling watermelons in a GMC when I was 16 years old that had that shift pattern - and I'm 69 years old now lol... there is such a big split between 3rd 4th and 5th if you had any load at all you needed to use the 2 speed axle - but I always had a 32 foot single axle trailer behind me...

I use a cotter pin removal tool, looks some what the same but the bent pick is off set. It also works great.
I’ve always replaced the thermal fan clutch when putting on a new water pump. Seeing how old that pump and clutch was, and how hard it was to find a pump, I think it would of been best practice to replace the fan clutch. Hopefully it (the old clutch) doesn’t take out your new pump.

that pulley sure was on there! if you were closer, i would have given you a good radiator i removed from a s1954 with 48k miles on it.
Wow, that some low miles! I about fell over when I got a quote to repair my old radiator. It's a lot more expensive than it used to be.
Takes me back a few years, we had about 8 to 10 of these IH 1900s. they were good trucks after we got used to their little quirks.
They're tough trucks and still work well as long as you aren't in a huge hurry. My brother has a tandem version that runs every day.

@@WatchWesWork Thats a tough engine. we have one in a tandem and been through hell. guys i work with cant drive well and they even had it running backwards one day. called me up and said hey its smoking out of the hood so im come tracking over in the excavator. as im on my way over i notice no smoke out of the exhaust (it always smokes) and it was coming out of the air cleaner. I hop in the cab and there's no oil pressure. turn it off and fire any back up and everything is back to normal. he slapped the tailgate and almost stalled it and it kicked over backwards. He then said all the gears were backwards. lol i bet it ran that way for 10 or 15 minutes and that was a few years ago. still running ok to this day.
I've got a lot of seat time in these old Internationals. Every municipality around here has them, including the road commissioner I used to work for. We ran them hard and never really had any issues. The newer HEUI engines were more complicated, but still very reliable. Kind of like a 5.9 Cummins, it's a 1,300 lbs engine that makes all of 220 horsepower. They don't have enough guts to destroy themselves like newer engines.

Oh one more piece of knowledge. I have a perfect track record dealing with leaks. Doesn't seem to matter what kind of leak, I just leave them be. Eventually they all stop. Never been able to guess when each will, stop but every one I've run across does. I'm to the point I don't even bother looking for leaks or try identifying the fluid. I just carry on with my day, confident in my knowledge.
It's adjustable in height. If only I had adjusted it first...

I worked for a building supply company in Connecticut back in 94 they had two international trucks one was a box the other a flatbed boom truck Both trucks had the Dt 466 engines ran good no power

I think the older trucks were easier to drive with the 2 speed axle. The older ones were actuated by vacuum and the newer ones are electronically actuated. I think that’s right you can correct me if I’m wrong.

I have a 1979 F8000 Cat 3208 with a Clark 5 speed and 2 speed rear. It's got that 4L, 5L, 4H, 5H shift pattern on the visor. It also says that when upshifting to select the next gear while still in H range then push L once you're in the next gear. Never made much sense to me then again most of my experience is with an Eaton 8LL
I had a single axle IH tractor to pull and excavator, and seems like I remember shifting the Fuller without using the clutch ....good methodical repair! ....jack screws would have likely helped ...not always easy to see what is going on
It probably had a real transmission. This one is just a pumped up version of a pickup transmission.
MW series pump? The IH we had like that at work had a clark 5spd.
Yes, it should be an MW. It could be a Clark. I haven't been under to check it out. My dad put a clutch in this truck once, I guess I could ask him.

Well I bought it to fix and sell, but it's a pretty nice truck that's not really worth much. I may keep it for a while and just throw some mileage plates on it.

Turbo cooler esp on a engine that low HP would help it cause the air will be denser on the intake allowing better fuel burn.also air is thinner there so it'll help turbo out

I have had tons of issues with aftermarket radiators they either don't fit or the mount brackets don't line up or the Inlet and outlet tubes are in wrong spot or there slitley off or there missing a cooler for the trans or oil they can be a pain @Watch Wes Work

Did you ever drive am old Mack with a quadruplex. that takes some getting use to.
I love those spoke wheels on all construction trucks. It gives them the heavy duty on/off road look. That is a tuff little truck. International and the Ford Louisville made great vocational rigs. Heavy and made to work. Just international parts were more expensive back in those days which being an owner operator you would factor in when spec'ing a truck. I assume you pressure tested the system after you filled it back with coolant.
