The etymology of "yoke" (in several languages) means "to join". Probably mostly known (in its noun form) as the wooden bracket that connects working/draft animals - I wonder if the clothing use of yoke comes from this (as it joins other pattern pieces around the neck and shoulders) or if just takes its definition from the general "to join"? Thanks for another great tutorial! I think I'm finally brave enough to draft my own bodice pattern.
It could also come from the yoke as in "a wooden crosspiece that is fastened over the necks of two animals and attached to the plough or cart that they are to pull." given that a yoke in garments is normally at the neck or top of the garment.
There are also yokes that you put over your shoulders that have buckets/loads hanging off each end. They probably land right on the same spot as the shirt yoke.
So sorry, Bianca, for your loss. I know that it's not much but please know that we're thinking of you in this hardship. The blouse turned out very pretty, hope you managed to wear it and enjoy it in your trip, and find in that some solace.
A yoke is the wooden piece that goes across the shoulders of working ox or horses from which the rest of the harness connects. A yoke in a blouse also goes over the shoulders so maybe that’s where it’s from?
I bet you were the best dressed person on your trip!!!! And I was sorry that you didn't make it home for your fur baby!!! I know how that feels having lost five of mine since the beginning of the year. They were all the same age range. I hope you enjoyed your trip for the most part.
So sorry to hear about Cleo. I think they sometimes wait for their person to leave. One of my husband's cats waited until he was out of state to go. It is hard that the price we pay for loving them is usually out living them. Sending peace your way.
I am so sorry to hear about your cat. We have buried or cremated many of our family animal members, never easy. I trust that someone was lovingly caring for her while you were gone. Thank you for a great vid, I enjoy them immensely. Have a wonderful week!!
I lost a cat in early spring and my dog also passed away in late spring. Both were quite old but I miss them deeply. I feel for you! I hope that your trip was a good distraction.
I like the idea of button back blouses, but I always avoided them because I'm worried that I wouldn't be able to do them up by myself. But skipping the hard-to-reach part and just having a button on the collar is a perfect solution to that! Thank you, I will have to come up with some ideas for fabric in my stash.
Loose long light colored light wool are best in the desert for the hot sun. The hot room, short sleeves down to no sleaved loose cotton. The room with a hot man, maybe even less. Lol. I do love this top.
Wonderful way to use up every little bit of this lovely fabric. The little bit of black lace along the yoke is perfect. Thinking of you, knowing you're going home to a sad situation.
Adorable top! I hope it’s as comfortable as it looks. Since I live on the always-hot border with Mexico, I always appreciate seeing hot-weather clothes.
your makeup looks are always so rad 😭💕 you've inspired me to wear some heavy eyeshadow inspired looks myself! thanks for the wonderful video! stay safe out there!
I love the fabric! I also love the stream of consciousness way you explain your decisions. I was sorry to hear about your fur baby. It's never easy to lose them, they're such a significant part of life
First, I absolutely love this fabric and I am so glad I have a Hancock supplier now since you gave us the link. Our Florida Hancock's all closed a couple of years ago. I love this little top and I hope you had a fabulous vacation. You deserve it. I love your style. You have a great eye for design and fabric choices.
This is pretty! I love almost everything you make, but most of it I wouldn't personally wear because it's not my style, but this I would happily wear every week!
okay you're really starting to tempt me into using some quilting cotton again for the first time since i started sewing, such a cute top!! edit: with your safari aesthetic I think something troop beverly hills inspired would be great for you! merging the two camps if you will.
your posting of this coincided with me needing something to watch while making the flats for an edwardian collection for my CAD class, so funny! wishing you safe travels, and thanks for the great videos as always!
I like the fabric. It's typical for the times. You would buy what is on sale or what you could get for a bargain. Since fabric is so expensive (what the hell happened there?) You would use what you had. The style is perfect.
I hope you have a fabulous time in the desert. I hope Shields date farm, Sunnylands garden tour, Sherman’s deli and all of the resale shops are your stop. I’m going to keep my eyes open. Maybe I’ll spot you out and about! I love your videos. You inspire me and make me feel more confident in my sewing
This top is amazing! Thanks for the tip about button arrangement on the back, I love the way button back blouses look but I can't remember the last time I've been able to touch my hands together in between my shoulder blades haha.
What a cute top!! I really love watching and hearing how you make decisions while pattern drafting. Your videos have inspired me to to fit a bodice block so that I can these drafting techniques to design exactly the clothes I want to wear! ❤
I love how it came out! A mix of victoriana meets prairie goth, I picture this in a ghost town where some kids end up and you're not really sure which era it is supposed to be, like Over the garden wall, but make it wild west? Okay, my imagination took me places. Sending you all the hugs for Cleo
Love this blouse. Would love to make this for myself because I once dad a similar blouse with the yoke. But instead of buttons in the back it had a slim keyhole style neckline that tied in the front. Also was slightly gathered with elastic at the back hem. I've been keeping this memory because I wanted to recreate it at some point before I forget altogether. I didn't have a clue about the yoke. Now I do.
Hi Bianca!! Love how the top turned out.. Love the fabric too.. I agree with you about top stitching.. Hope you had a safe journey & back home.. Hope your as ready as I am for this spooky season…. 💜💜💜🧵🧵🧵
I can relate because I crop every top I sew. Otherwise, they're always too long and I don't need that ! I also have to lengthen the sleeves but that's another story ^^ This top is amazingly beautiful and you make it seems so easy. I have to start making my own blocks.
As always, a great video. Does anyone know of a site that shows the making of men's period clothing? I don't think I'd look good in an Edwardian inspired top. It would most likely clash with my beard.
Take a look at Pinset Tailoring. He generally works in a period a little earlier than Bianca but tailoring is tailoring. You can also check out Nicole Rudolphs channel. She does a lot of pattern draughting and tailoring of garments (mens, womens, and mens styles for women)
I think whether topstitching makes something look homemade or well finished depends entirely on how straight and exact your top stitching is. For me, it would only look more polished if I was doing it by hand.
Hello Bianca. As always, thank you much for sharing your knowledge with us. 🖤 Do you think this kind of bodice would work with long sleeves, or would the all in one design restrict arm movement and be unconfortable ?
If it's fitted properly there shouldn't be a problem. It's easier to fit and alter a separate sleeve, and those can be made more tight fitting than an all-in-one, but there are styles that are built as an all-in-one body and sleeves. Dolman style sleeves for instance are like that. Kimonos I think are also built like that, the entire thing built from two pieces, front and back and sewed at the shoulders, the sleeves built into the cut. And I don't know how historical it is but I've seen fantasy dresses be made from a single long piece that you fold in half then cut a head hole into, the rest of the shaping being made from the side seams and potentially a few darts. So if you want to do an all-in-one it should be fine with a bit of fiddling 👍
Thank you Odette! I have shown some long all-in-one sleeves in this dressing gown video here th-cam.com/video/l_PhhhcLDr8/w-d-xo.html but I will also be doing them on a dress again soon!
I recently bought brocade coutil and I’m making a dress form and a corset out of it. Wonderful material to work with! Here in Canada getting certain types of fabric can be really difficult and buying from the US may be cheaper but the cost of shipping is more than the items costs. But this beautiful fabric I managed to find at a place called Farthinggales in Montreal. $45/meter. Yes you heard me right lol. But it’s beautiful! I really enjoy your videos and the fact that you shaped like myself really helps. Your awesome! Kim🇨🇦
Thank you Kaytie! I did indeed wear the shirt to Calico, but it was a little too windy for setting up a camera well to get proper photos, I'll have a video clip though!

I feel the same about topstitching, I think it makes things look nice and finished

Top stitching and Dad jokes. Two of my all time favorites!
What a lovely top, the black lace really made it look special. Hope you had a safe journey home and are ready for spooky 👻 season. Best wishes xx

I love the dad jokes, I think bad puns are ace culture 💜
Even the Romans had puns!

Yes! It's god to hear I'm not the only one who thinks topstitching is a nice detail. I thought maybe I was just being lazy since it's often easier. 😄
