A special On The Hunt today to look at a very special personal collection of Tom Yasinski from Grimshaw Alberta, Canada that he has elected to send to auction all but his personal 359 Peterbilt, darn. However, there are some very special trucks he’s selling including late 70’s model Kenworths and a 1975 Hayes Clipper. What makes these trucks extra special is the motors in them including a Cat 1693 (3406 predecessor) a 3408 V8 Caterpillar (these were D9 engines modified to be installed in on the road semis) and the most special a KTA-600 Cummins that was the 426 Hemi of the semi-truck world in the 70’s. These were just too unique and special not to make a special trip to look at. You won’t believe what they sold for…

Man this episode was Over The Top (hopefully someone will catch that reference)! The stories my dad has told about running a 3408 and the KTA is insane, he had one of the first KT450s in the area and took it to Antrim Diesel in Greencastle Pa and they put a aftercooler on it and made it a 600, one of the best stories is when he was hauling grain with a few guys who had the “Silver 92” 8v92 Detroits and they were grossing well over 100,000 every load and the trip was 100 miles and they all stopped on top of a mountain and dad changed buttons in the pump before the others got there, long story short dad dumped his grain off and met the others about 20 miles out of where they delivered. Another is when he hauled sand out of Gore Virginia going to Pittsburgh to PPG and coming out of Gore there’s a mountain with about a 5% grade and big engine before the KTA was the Big Cam and with a Big Cam you could pull that mountain around 24mph, when dad got the KTA he pulled it at 40mph and was grossing 110,000. To say the KTA is a monster is a understatement

I think John Kelly's Majestic has a KTA19. And Aerocat had a 3408, of course, that allowed to do 285kmh with 3 behind and run Adelaide to Perth to 2 hours flat.

Had two different KT’s in the 80’s. One was a 450 and the other a 600, and here was the difference I found between both of them and a small cam/big cam 400. ( we could get 400 lbs of rail pressure easily out of the 400’s)
Ok, difference… Pulling out of Trona, CA grossing 80,000 lbs, there’s a pull many miles long and runs between 5% to 7% steep. Pulling out of there, even around 4am when roads were cool, vs afternoon when outside temps were easily over 110 degrees, you could rock and roll up that pass, stop on top and literally role your hand across drive tires and the rubber would roll off in your hands.
A 400, hopped up and being careful to not heat pyro up to hot, stop on top, no rubber coming off.
The difference in torque must have been insane.
34,000 miles for a set a drive tires from the K-motors vs 125/130,000 with the 400?
I don’t know, I just thought the KTs were nothing short of a boat anchor.
1693? Gods version of beauty! Put big set of nozzles in there? Chiwawa! Nobody could see around you for a mile!!!
    Black Smoke!

In the mid seventies there was a TV show called “Movin’ on” starring Claude Akins, it was about two independent truckers. Kenworth provided a new truck they just came out with in 1974 for promotion on the show. It was the W900 VIT

They needed the extra room for the in cab shots. OVERDRIVE did an article on them. The Aerodyne came out in '76

Love the old school twin sticks. These young kids would have no clue in how to drive a twin. I told grand dad I wanted to drive truck. He took me out in the field and showed me the pattern twice. Said I will see back at the house. Four hours later I showed up. He said well you made it this far now let's see if you can make it to Salt Lake City. Hooked up the hay wagon and off I went.

    Then he got a '79 W900A VIT 60" flattop. 3408 with a 13. Then put in a 6x4.
She was a runner for sure.

I’d say you’re spot on where That shift patterns probably for the old 5 speed main box it had before the 13 went in it. Back in the day a lot of guys used to put a road ranger in those trucks when the original 4,5 or 6 speed mains wore out and just leave the auxiliary because there wasn’t any reason not too…you can leave it in direct and drive it like a 13 but you’ve got an extra overdrive and a few more gears on the bottom end to get rolling, plus the “power tower” PTO drive on those old aux boxes was perfect for mechanical winches because you had multiple speeds and reverse all built into the main transmission so the winch could be made really simple with chain drive and a reduction gearset. I’ve got my eye on a 79 Paystar 5000 winch tractors with a 350 BC1 Cummins and a “backwards” RTO-12510 and a factory installed 4 speed 1241D auxiliary behind it with a “power tower” that runs a massive Garwood winch. Gave the owner my offer just hoping he considers it, I’m about the only guy around that would actually put the thing back to work pulling a lowboy and end dump, it would match my 89’ Paystar pretty nicely too, Its got the same basic engine (although the 89’s a BC3) and rears although mine is 5.38 ratio and the tractor is 4.10’s, but I kind of like the idea of a triple digit top speed without loosing any low-hole creeping gears.

This is what my old boss' yard would look like if he had money.
He loved old trucks and he used to work them. He had a full time paint and body guy and a full time mechanic and they would pull the trucks in 1 at a time and restore them.
It was nice to drive the old 66 Pete or 65 Kenworth for a trip but I wouldn't want to do it full time.
Call me soft but you get paid the same wage to ride in air conditioning, working heater, bunk AC, air ride, extra 200hp, and you can actually hear the radio!
The 85 Western Star was so noisy you had to choose. You could either have the radio on, listen to the two-way radio, or have the window down. There was no combination of the 2

It was apparently the most complicated aero engine to see service in WWI and by a considerable margin, the most reliable aero engine in that conflict.

All these are cool but that Hayes is a special treat. Unfortunately the company kept changing hands. As to the brownie shifter on the left of the main stick: they shared a parent company with Mack in the early 70s, so that's probably the reason. On the sleeper, 1975 was about the time the company got sold to Paccar, so it would make sense that some KW/Pete parts might have been used to finish out whatever Hayes trucks were still in production.

I noticed at 26.17 sec the "Seattle Pack" splendor trim dash pad used upside down tucked under the sunvisors. As others have previously stated in your other episodes. Guess they could have used it either on the dash top or under the windscreen overhead.
Those battery box step covers were originally optioned for both left and right.
Love that Hayes, about the only other engine we didn't see was a Allis Chalmers.
Thanks Mark great content as usual.

Mornin Mark, I love those old trucks I have driven a truck almost exactly the same as each one of those but I have never driven a KTA, but I worked alongside a few of them and they are a beast. Great video Mark see you on the next one

The tarp under the K is for heat. Can't keep them warm in the winter. The factory rad in my 359 has 8 rows and the KTA water pump pushes 220 gal/min at 2100. My truck has shutter and STILL needs a winterfront and belly tarp below zero. But I can full pull a mountain at 30 above andand not break 200 degrees...

Wow memories the second KW you looked at is really close to the 1st KW conventional I ever got to drive, with a boom almost like that one no sleeper just a day cab, was owned by P.N.B. fell hopelessly in love with PACCAR and K.W's ever since.😊

I do miss that T800 I ran for Firestone.
O/O spec Company truck. Steering wheels should still be big 3spoke and White. and there should still be Twin sticks in the floor. With wing windows in the doors.

It’s funny. When you asked what was under the hood in the W924HD, I was chanting “3408, 3408!” Yeah!

The 1693 is a modified d343 for trucks, the d343 is used in a variety of older cat equipment such as 988a, 637 front 657& 666 rear, 825 and I believe d8 up t o the k model as well as marine propulsion. A very proven engine

Not sure about the older D8’s but at least the D8K’s had D342’s. Little bit different. Then they went to the D353’s for the D9H’s.

The secondary trailer brake hand valve could be running the winch band brake, provided no brake saver...
