Usually the ones with bad parental situations or home situations are the ones bullied, because family status is important over there.

Reading a lot of the knetz (Korean netizens) comments, the law for children/teenagers is lenient considering they're still underage. So no matter how cruel or disgusting the crime is, they are still given lower sentences. Koreans are also angry with how lenient their law is towards crimes like this including sex crimes. I've read multiple cases of bullying that will make anyone want to puke, and the culprits were still living free and happy

This is a very touchy and sensitive subject especially as the perpetrators are teens or underage. What is missing is the schools'/institutions' sense of responsibility when such crimes (they should be called that) occur in their student population, instead of hiding it away or sweeping it under the rug for fear of "losing face."
I fear this is a worldwide situation that calls for government intervention through laws that protect bullied students and reform the perpetrators so they will have a deeper understanding of their violent actions. Bullying is a symptom and the cause needs to be identified. We don't know if one of these bullies will, in the future, turn out to be a serial murderer or abuser or something else more horrific, so early detection via behavioral observation is a good approach to study who these bullies are and why they do the things they do.
This is another great video. Thank you so, so much, Megan and team.

I’ve been a victim of bullying when i was in middle school as well. I endured that for a whole year without saying anything. Actually, my grandmother was the one who noticed just by my demeanor changing over time. And even then i still didn’t say anything. I got lucky because my grandmother raised all kinds of heII with the school and the bus i rode on(which is where all the bullying happened). I say i got lucky because the school actually took it seriously and ordered for 3 of the 4 girls to be banned from having any contact with me while they got monitored. And the 1 out of the 4 girls got expelled for threatening and abusing me everyday for that school year.
Also: I’ve used a curling iron and flat iron and barely hit a my finger a couple times while using them and winced in pain for like 20min. I couldn’t imagine what this poor girl went through having the actual plates fully pressed onto her skin at the highest temp, on top of all the other injuries she’s endured from torture she went through. Victims like this girl are strong af for even going through that, especially if they survive and still manage to live on. I know the ptsd is unimaginable for victims like this poor girl.

As someone who is not from Korea, I have mostly come across stories about school bullying in kdramas. Initially I thought they were exaggerating to make the kdramas more dramatic but as I continued knowing Korean news through kpop or kdramas, being part of fandoms & coming across horrific news about school bullying it became real to me just how much this happens in Korea & how little repercussion are faced by the perpetrators.
I also want to add that in most Asian communities, society views education as the top most priority in terms of having a good student record. The fact that many of the bullying cases are tried to be pled with the reasoning that this will impact the perpetrator's student record or chance at college admission baffles me and disgust me thinking what kinda society & environment are we creating where perpetrators can get away with their horrific acts cuz they know it will be their "first offence" or "the court/board/adults will let me go cuz they don't want my student record to be impacted"

I remember we were just walking on the street and train station and they will push you because they want to pass by you, instead of saying excuse me or walk beside you and avoid having a physical contact... another experience we had was, we were in the grocery store, and the girl arranging the items in the shelf pushed our cart because she's piling up their stocks and our cart was blocking the shelf... another one was, we were looking around in the stores, and we saw a cute pants, and lifted it to check it clearly in the light, the guy in the store grabbed it in my hand and put it back to the hanger... that was so rude... even my sister attested that Koreans are like that. This story as well as thousands of other ones in South Korea make me feel terrible for how little they’re punished. I hope South Koreans actually speak up about it and change it for good. Bullying isn’t going to benefit the bully but it will scar the victim FOR LIFE. And incase you didnt know, we only have one life. i hate how that poor girl had to have her one life ruined by others for no apparent reason. Imagine how painful it would have been mentally AND physically to get tortured (not even a quick death) for fucking days. PLEASE, South Korea. If you see this, GET. YOUR. BULLYING. UNDER. CONTROL. As a student who studies in India, I dont think we have very huge cases of school bullying here. I had a friend who got bullied but the maximum was all class teasing her and insulting her never beyond. Nevertheless, I was new to the school when i saw all this happen for the first time. I was 9 years old in 5th grade. As I was new to the school, I felt bad for her so tried to be her friend. There was this girl, who was literally was behind me every time during dispersal all along the way she would try to persuade me and tell me how i should not be friends with her. I knew she was wrong. The girl they all bullied was literally so sweet. I mean whenever someone forgot to bring something to the class and even when their friends wouldnt share their stuff, they went to her and she always gave. The other times she would be treated as if she was some untouchable and no one would touch her or her stuff. We were all merely 5th graders. Then i finally made friends in my new class and now i had a group of 4. In the whole class we treated her best compared to others. But we didnt treat her good otherwise. The other children had influenced us, they would taunt us for talking to her and being friends with her. And back then it kinda seemed cool to everyone to bully her. Sometimes, we behaved the same then we would feel guilty and stop. But the cycle continued of behaving that way then feeling guilty then treating her nice. Now 5 years after, I've lost contact with 2 people from that group and one is my best friend. We sometimes discuss how it was all fucked up. And I actually end up crying sometimes how i was so terrible. I could have been better but why did i want to be like others even when i knew they were wrong. This is something i regret for life. I made sure I never lose conact with her cause someday I wanna meet her again and apologise. Whenever someone would ask her she would tell them I and my group are best friends. She thought we were good to her but we were only better to her otherwise still worst. I hope she is in a much more better place now. Even back then amidst all of this bullying, She was the strongest. She always seemed happy and smiled. Whenever we talked to her she was so enthusiastic. Even when many teachers try to shut her down or did not behave well with her still she tried to particiapate as much as she could - in class discussions, in competitons etc. She is my motivation during hard times now. I even remember how happy she was when i invited her to my birthday cause it was her first time attending someone's birthday from school.

I really like how you are retelling these cases with your calm manner/voice. It really draws someone in.
Bullying is a terrible problem around the world. Especially when it gets unnoticed.
I mean, yeah, some bullies have themselves problem they can't deal with (abuse, hard life, etc...) and putting it on others, but this is no excuse to harm someone else in any kind of way.
One of my classmates bullied me too over years. Very intelligent man, who lost his parents in a young age, which is sad, but no excuse to treat me poorly.
It is hard for me sometimes, bc I started to mistrust people they could hurt me.
Sadly, at work, we have also people who have tendencies to go in that direction... But I found my way to deal with it.
We really need harsher punishments for bullies, so they see, they can't continue with this and that people are suffering. It is sad, that Karma isn't coming back to them so easily.

@@6nomemory6 That people are bullying others bc they are bored or lonely is an aspect, which is shocking me everytime. I mean, they have a stable life - probably not enough emotional caring of their parents, but this is still no reason or excuse.

The writer of The Glory, Kim Eun Sook definitely researched bullying cases and decided to base it off the curling iron Cheongju case. In an interview she said the drama was just a work of fiction based on conversations with her daughter, but I don't believe it one bit.
It sucks that she's not being honest about where the inspiration of the drama really came from. It seems like she wants to take all the credit for coming up with something that was not 100% an original idea but a true story.

That honestly sucks. She is earning off of somebody's absolute worst nightmares and hundreds and thousands who undergo the same thing. Honestly, it's no better than a slap on the wrist that the actual cases' perpetrators faced. Had the actual case, whatever it may have been, credited, those bullies from the real thing could remember what they did to someone and have had just one sleepless night if not many. They didn't suffer and no matter how young or first or second their crimes were, they should have faced punishments on par with a regular criminal. Honestly, S Korean society needs to get its shit together. They are taking things too lightly in a whole lot of cases and sooner or later, it's all gonna blow back up in their faces. Bullies or perverts or creeps don't change that easily, let alone with a mere slap on the wrist.

I don't think she can claim it to be based on real cases because the legality will be murky, not just for the victim but also the perpetrators, people will speculate and try to link the drama to real life cases. The problem is the real case has so little information to be a drama and they may not consent while the drama has a lot of personal detail.
Therefore, the only way movie/drama/fiction can claim that they come from true story is when they get all the details correct to avoid misunderstanding and also someone directly involved to give them their perspective. The perpetrators from Cheongju case also do not get their name out publicly because they are a minor. She may not based the whole things of that case, she may want to have story about the bullying awareness and have the same scene with Cheongju case but saying that based it on that case will murky the reality in the real case, can send unwanted attention to people involved, including the victim and open defamation lawsuit for the whole production team.
She brought this as fiction because everyone in SK understand that this is real phenomenon, bullying is severe without having the "realism tag" and with "fiction tag" the drama can be made without endangering the production team. The things that connect the glory and Cheongju case is mostly in weapon to hurts but the backstory of character in the glory is not similar to the case. How will they respond if the victim felt like they was defamed as the "adult perpetrators" because of this drama?? Remember that the glory is not just about how tragic the abuse but also about a victim that do all sort of illegal and legal things to get back on the perpetrators. How about the parents that just non existent in the drama but was supporting in rea life? How should they respond if other people from the Cheongju class or even from the same school but unrelated to the incident got harassed because this drama showed many perpetrators? This is not just cut and dry situation for credit related, this involved real people with their life, not everyone want to be the centre of attention.
With the drama being tag as fiction, people start find out real bullying case and raise the awareness because they all know this stuff is happening around them.

You deserve to be happy, don't let scumbag people like them extinguish the happiness of a wonderful person like you.

Bullying is horrible everywhere, but I've heard that bullying in Asian countries, specifically Korea and Japan, is a whole 'nother flavour of fucked up. So many horrible stories of bullying because people like this can get away with it... laws really need to change in places like this, what a horrific story.

I can't imagine how bullies sleep peacefully while the victim suffered day and night until she grow ups. She deserve justice!!! whyyyy their governments did not take actions to reduce this kind of bullying. Its not just bullying its a physical assault.

Its not only the bullies it also depends the parents of the bullies to supervise their kids and give them time and good preaches to make them a good healthy and bright individual to avoid such conflicts and spend a healthy life . Also the victims parents to talk to their kids and learn about them as a good friend so that they wont get into these kind of tragic situations

It's disgusting to think that most 'bullies' don't even get arrested for the abuse they did to the victims and their actions don't leave a criminal record????? That is super unfair for the victims because of how much they have suffered. I personally first encountered South Korea's bullying cases when I was reading a webtoon and I didn't actually know that it was THAT severe :( it's sad to think that the victims don't talk to their parents and teachers probably because their scared.

I grew up “hardened” inside out that I would NEVER in a million years allow this to happen to me without a flght to the death. I wouldn’t even care what consequences await, all I know is I would be squaring up… ready for ANYTHING. Hearing about this just enrages me and why I have all my kids go through rigorous training on MMA & self defense. Ain’t no kid or group of buIIies runnin’ up on mine. PeriodT.

School Is a place where children go to learn moral things but, it turned out to be a biggest life threat. There should be some strict laws against this so, that bullies cannot even think to bully someone

moral teachings are hardly taught the school curriculum focuses on the provided syllabus and often ignores moral teachings saying it's not part of their job until it affects the staff I remember during the last week of my 10th grade as it was the last week of school and students would be moving to colleges from the 11th grade it is like a ritual to write on each other's shirt goodbye messages and stuff and this has been happening for years but this time the principal was angry for some reason because some kids wrote swear words on each other's shirt in a friendly way no bullying but the principal slapped the kids who wrote it in the school assembly and not just once like a five-time at least but the following day a fight broke out between some boys and one boy became blind in one eye because of how badly he was punched but the school completely ignored like t didn't happen....we all could see the hypocrisy of our school and it's not the first time something like this happened
