That bike is adorable. This was my era of mountain biking, I was training as a guide, riding a custom steel frame and loving the biking. Now I am an old lady with a nearly thirty year old bike that I can ride occasionally. My steel frame is retired and hangs on my office wall to remind me of my youth. Does giving old things new life include us? 😁
Love the build. Very awesome. Bringing old bikes back to life and giving them a purpose again. Simple, relaxing and fun to watch your videos. And the temperatures outside right now perfect for riding.
It just shows the money we all waste buying hyper expensive parts that we don’t really need.I went out and bought a 1991 klein pinnacle after watching oldshovel a few years ago and it’s my favourite bike I own.
I finally finished my "giving old things new life" project, a "Frankengravel" as some might call it. It's a 1998 Barracuda XC URT frame built up as a 26" softtail gravel bike. I finally found a suspension correct rigid fork, a Carver from a place in Maine, which was the "final" piece of the puzzle. It has a 1 x 7 drivetrain, friction thumbshifter, 11-34 cassette, 12 spd narrow wide crankset off my hardtail, Paul Crosstop 3 brakeset, and a knockoff of the Origin8 Strongbow bar. Thing rides so good and I have less than $350 in the whole project. Love the channel and thoroughly enjoy your creativity with the builds.
I am riding the same fork, Bomber Z2, on my 1998 Rocky Mountain Blizzard. Still feels awesome to this day. Mine must be a year newer though as I have the option for a disk brake.
Im a fan of modern bars on a retro build but i find a stem with a rise that matches the angle of the downtube looks good and gets the bars up. My bars get all anodising removed and polished back to mirror then cut down, say kind of 2010 standards but old skool looks. These older bikes are closer to road bike geo than modern mtb. Take some fannagling! Super nice build, my 2nd fav, after the blue kona 👍
I have eagerly waited for a build like this.. all the parts that i love and the marzocchi is a blast but why didn't you put the heatset in the other way?
"feels like a modern fork" Yea cuz in 1996 the "Bomber" set the gold standard to which every other fork had to step up to. I have a few old Marzocchi forks and they still ride amazing.
You wouldn't by any chance tell us the weight of the bikes you build....? I have a nagging suspicion they are consistently lighter than similar modern bikes. Also, the Panaracer tires are a nice retro touch. I still remember fondly my Smokes and Darts.
I think modern XC bikes, with 29" wheels and longer top tubes, therefore bigger frames overall, are liable to be heavier than bikes like this one. They make up for it with the handling though!
I know you get asked this all the time and I’m sure you’ve explained it in several of your videos but why do you install the Chris king headset cups upside down?
I did a video on it a while back. Really it’s just for fun and because you can Installing a Chris King Headset Upside down & Coins In Your Grips th-cam.com/video/4H_BGKIjdIU/w-d-xo.html
those Z2s look like the travel is low,,,but they go all the way down they are just rite for most peoples need ,,they have less travel than Z1s but feel better,, they are very light to i real nice fork i sold my set to an old boy few years ago,, ,,regret
The CK headset is nothing but bike porn but shouldn’t the top and bottom cups switch places? The name is upside down (not that it matters much, though). Beautiful build yet again.
These older bikes are so pleasing to the eye..
I totally agree
Agree as well.Looks like todays bikes only come in black and grey like cars!Silly if you ask me!We need colours in our lives not beigemobiles!
@@interceptor7905Lots of great colours coming out that you can see on the competitive circuits, but it definitely isn't like it was back from '88-2002
Ive been a bicycle nerd all my life. I have owned 100s but this is the only bicycle related youtube channel i have ever been interested in. strange.
🙌 awesome

I like the fact that you focus on restoring older bikes.
thank you for everything you post

Spot on.
And that feeling of riding an old bike you cherished re-building it properly.
Very cool build. Love the colour of the frame and fork. These old mountain bikes just look right. Brilliant way to start a Sunday morning.
Thanks
I’m so stoked you’re putting out regular videos again. Best channel on TH-cam!!
Thanks
Nice build. The LX group suited that frame.

Aaahh that bike, looks so cool with the colors matched, the frame, fork and grips 😍
Having those King Bits upside down would bother me to bits.
It does bother a good chunk of folks :)
Awesome bike yes in deed!
It makes the Pee Wee Herman scream in my head!

They are awesome
Another forgotten bike put back on the streets and trails! Love it!
Sei sempre il numero 1🤙🤙😉😉😉😉
Enjoyed the video tremendously. Love the crank bros stem. Love your creative & artistic builds.
Thanks
Great build. Working in bike shop 1980’s-90’s. Could argue that the ‘budget’ LX groupset on this build easily will outlast the XT groupset of today!!
Lol agreed
I love bikes with patina.
Lol totally
Man! I found your channel while in lockdown (2020!) so glad to see you’re still going strong making exceptional content
that blue 570 lx groupset. just gorgeous
i like the gold one more
very nice bike!!
Thanks
i think those two were originally together before disassembled. I have seen a lot of images online showing the same frame and fork setup
I think your right.
Beautiful build! I had a KHS the same year and color way but mine was true temper steel, they were underated bikes.
Agreed. Thy had some awesome bike
A geometria desses quadros khs sao muito boas ,eu tenho um alite2000 e é uma verdadeira escaladora.
🙌😁
Good job ❤.
Lovely, don't think they would work with this one, but I would love to see more tan wall tyres on your builds.
Mais um belo trabalho! 🇧🇷
Great restoration,is that a illuminated neon Marin sign in the background,Chris
Thanks and no the sign is just tin
Great premise ❤
We're is this salt lake bicycle collective cause I gotta pay em a vist
Nice build 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks
I had a 1991 khs Montana team

Lol the upside down CK headsets always get folks talking 😁
I like the old bikes with new components. You need to put disk brakes on a bike again, that was cool
😁 it is fun
Awesome build, I'm a big fan of your channel. But as a bike mechanic for over 30 years, I noticed that you pressed the headset cups Upside-down.
😁 yep Installing a Chris King Headset Upside down & Coins In Your Grips

I just finished a 2011 Santa Cruz Superlight build. I love to build bikes. It was really cool to watch this.
Awesome
I've got an original Z1 dual disc fork that still feels as plush as new forks, probably always will, never been serviced and still going strong
They were awesome
Yeah I've got a 2005 Marzocchi MX Comp, also never been serviced, and it feels great. Proper well made.
It would be great to see a 1995/96 trek 9900 OCLV team issue
I really want to know why you are not using an ultrasonic cleaner?
The forks are younger than the frame . I did a project like this last year .
You got a matching frame and fork from the same place...
Yep 😁
"feels like a modern fork" Yea cuz in 1996 the "Bomber" set the gold standard to which every other fork had to step up to. I have a few old Marzocchi forks and they still ride amazing.
Sorry. Aren't those Chris Kings installed upside down.
Ah I see. My OCD is settled now. Great reasoning with those used parts.
Nice 👍
How do you sleep at night knowing your headset is upside down 😂
It makes me smile every time I see it
I love 90s mtn bikes. The King headset though is upside down?

I love your channel. Inspiring and never giving up old bikes. I regret selling my collection of 90s bikes.
Have you ever worked on a late 2000s Trek 4300? And where do you rank Titanium for a mountain bike frame material?
Do you go heads or tails with the coin in grips?

Where do you find all the CK headsets for your bikes?
The used ones have come from the salt lake bicycle collective
Ungreased pedal threads!!! Shiggy diggy!
Just out of curiosity why do you put money inside the grips
I know you get asked this all the time and I’m sure you’ve explained it in several of your videos but why do you install the Chris king headset cups upside down?

Why is the King NoThread set installed up side down? The KING logo is up side down.

Can you explain what parts you are using or something
those Z2s look like the travel is low,,,but they go all the way down they are just rite for most peoples need ,,they have less travel than Z1s but feel better,, they are very light to i real nice fork i sold my set to an old boy few years ago,, ,,regret
Your seat tube clamp needs to be turned around😊
Can I ask why you put the coins inside the grips?
End caps on the bars. The slide on Oury grips don’t have a hard end on them and the nickel is the exact size of the bars.
@@oldshovel Ahh makes sense, thanks!
3 weeks ago I picked up a retro specialized stump jumper m2 for $90
Awesome deal
This is how you properly build an old 90s MTB
Thanks
This looks like a bike some old shovel would make…………oh…..wait. 😉
The upside down headset, oof. I still enjoy your videos though 😁
There is a reason for that
Lol 😂 yep it always get folks going when I do it. 🙌
Chris King was mounted upside down.
Yep 😁🙌
💙💛
🙌😁
SIMANO DEORE LX Compo
I lthink & I ike very good components!!
US American nickels in the OURY grips, now... Big spender! ;-)
😁🙌
They don't just go together. This is literally the fork that came with the bike.
yeah they are same color...its obvious.
@@daily_dose_of_nothingness So...just because the color is the same it means it was the shock that came with the frame 😅
I do think it was but at first I wasn’t sure
The color was a stock Marzocchi color back in the day. I think KHS chose their colors based on the fork
Aaaaah! Headset upside down! Sweet buIld though.
😁🙌
22 lbs. Maybe? Lighter ?..u can tell us

I wouldn't install coins in grips cause I need all money I can get these days...so no lol
Lol
Nice but not liking colour ov seat
