This ASMR dream bike build only cost me $350 to build in parts, including the frame, from both the Salt Lake Bicycle Collective and the Ogden Bicycle Collective. Look for an upcoming video explaining how.
What a great video as always . I’m always so inspired after watching. I’ve got my wife hooked also . Been riding only for 8 years it got me healthy and at 54 I bike pack ,mountain bike and some road riding when I feel like tolerating cars … you have inspired me to work and fix up bikes it’s getting crowded in my little garage . I’m learning as I go . The only thing i haven’t learned yet is truing wheels and bottom bracket stuff … which I don’t have the tools yet but will get eventually. Always enjoy Saturday morning coffee and Old shovel video .
I know this has nothing to do with nothing, but the company I work for did construction work for Greg and his wife here in Minnesota and I can tell you that they are the nicest most humble people we have ever done work for, I tried my very best not to fan boy out but I couldn’t stop myself. He was beyond cool and I had him sign my bike frame. Nothing but friendly and he had a good laugh at me . I think he was surprised I actually knew who he was.
First time to your channel. I purchased a Zurich from Craigslist about 14 years ago. I only rode it a couple of times before putting it aside for other projects. I only pulled it out recently to get it back on the road. It is all original, including the seat and the tires, best I can tell. As a plus, I only live about 20 miles from Greg himself! I can't wait to get it back on the road. My winter project!
I still have my Zurich from about the same vintage. I run vittoria corsa control graphine 700x28. it rides soft and smooth on those tires. Nice video and good reminder to do my winter maintenance.
This Lemond's Reynold 853 my friend bought new from a Trek dealer in Thailand, paying around $1200 about 24 years ago. For those who don't know Trek owns several brands in those day including Lemond, Gary Fisher etc. The bike looked very beautiful.
One of my favorite Lemonds! I finally got one in my size and built it with Campy Record 10sp. Digging your build, thanks for giving it new life and sharing.
Had a '02 Lemond Buenos Aires, same frame as this. Built the bare frame up with 10-sp Dura-Ace. Best riding bike ever for me. It's the 853 steel and the longer top tube.
What a beautiful build once again. And impeccable video as usual! As many others mention, you're a great inspiration! I've got an LeMond Alpe D'Huez myself so the Zurich is familiar to me as it's the same frame. It's the most rewarding thing to ride in terms of beauty and comfort. Thanks again for posting such great quality videos. Much appreciated!
Hello, what material build is your Lemond frame? I have a '97 Tourmalet and it is built with Tru Temper. I have really enjoyed riding this material even though it was the lower end spec frame material for that time. What are some of the riding characteristics I would notice going from True Temper vs Reynolds 853?
@JSmith-ox2tt hi, my Tourmalet is early 2000's and aluminum frame with a carbon fork. It's basically a Trek road bike. It's fast but stiff and not very comfortable for long rides unless it's perfectly smooth roads. I ride mostly vintage mtb's so I'd assume a 853 road bike would ride similar. True temper was used on many vintage mtb's as well. 😀
@@JSmith-ox2tt In '97 they started using both True Temper and 853. Both are double-butted steel. The new 853 was designed to become stronger when heated so they could make the tubes thinner/lighter. And a few years later they switched back when True Temper came out with their new OX Platinum tubing with similar properties as the 853. So you could find yourself chasing the "better steel" chicken while you could just be riding.
Another cool bike rebuild. Wanted to share tip for removing grime, paint over spray and gooey stuff. Oderless mineral spirits. Sold at Home depot or Lowes, comes in a 1 gallon can (?) that will last a long time. Put some on a rag and start rubbing. Safe on most paints that are cured. Try on a inconspicuous area if you are in doubt. Ever get that extra paint from another bike or object rubbing against your frame and leaving an annoying rub mark? This helps a lot. I do this then follow up with carnuba wax for the tough marks. Works for removing tar off of your cars as well. Just repolish when complete.
lovely bike, i feel like wearing a cycling cap, bright jersey, yellow bracelet, and hit some epo to complete the vibe. just kidding. lovely build and calming music.
Sounds and looks a bit like Paris Texas - Ry Cooder - I Knew These People. Very faithful restoration of an old Lemond survivor bike, I feel these bikes have a soul of sorts. Happy new year from Australia.🦘
What a lovely build. Did not realise until fairly recently just how good some of the Lemond branded frames were. Always been a Campag. Record man, since 1970’s…however some great groupset’s were also made by Shimano-that era being one. Crazy how a lovely bike can be found for so little, whereas the ridiculous overpriced, ugly, heavy most recent road bikes cost an arm and a leg!
Very nice build, love the Le Mond 853 frame.Excellent tyre choice,I used to ride Michelin Pro2 Race, were they new old stock that you fitted here?Cheers.💯👌🏻🚴♂️
This is interesting. You applied an adapter bushing for the steerer tube to allow for installing a 28.6 mm stem on a 25.4 mm steerer tube, but where did you get a start nut for 25.4 mm steerer or did you manage to slam a 28.6 into it? Also how firmly the stem clamps onto that adapter and holds on the steerer if the adapter's inner diameter has to be slightly larger than 25.4 mm to be put on. Shouldn't there be a play on the steerer? Or maybe the adapter has a cut that allows it to be compressed so that it clamps on the steerer when the stem is tightened? P.S. a white, perforated bar tapr and a white saddle would give a better look to this frame 👌 Edit: just checked that the adapter has indeed a cut that allows it to be compressed and work as a clamp.
@oldshovel It's always been a constant cycle for myself, started road riding in my teens, then in the early 90 got heavily into mtn biking, but not more than 10 yrs later back to road again. Nowadays, I try to keep a balance of riding both mtn and road, but lately, I have been tinkering with my 26er "Frankengravel" that I built out of my '98 Barracuda XC URT frame. There is nothing wrong with doing a little bit of everything to keep it interesting. I understand fully the dangers of road riding, especially since the cellphone was invented.
so just a pro giving some advice- the fd cable is supposed to be routed over the bolt from the otherside (closer to the seat-tube, there's a tab just behind the bolt for the cable to rest on) not under and back over. :/ fd also looks kinda high. bottom edge of cage should be 3mm maximum above the tallest tooth of the big chainring. another thing is if i recall correctly, there should be some short 3mm x 35mm dropout alignment screws for these frames that it looks like your missing- The bike looks good the new fork was a good move over using the original lemond fork old carbon is getting sketchy now. Im super happy to see the Lemond come back to life. I remember the original video on it, and loved watching it. a co-worker of mine actually had his '99 Zurich refinished at Waterford just before they closed He had the toptube internally routed and restored with fresh paint and decals. these Lemond's are special. I wish I could find another in my size (50cm) but alas that's another unicorn. Thank you for the video my dude always love watching you breathe new life into these bikes. feel free to DM me if you need anything. I'd be happy to send something your way or help track down a part. its my day job but i'll put some OT in for you. Keep wrenching.!

Mix of 6500, 6600 and 5700 ?

This literally looks I wrote it except I'm 45 but everything else is spot on!! 😊
Love the old steel, nothing rides quite like it.Thanks for the video.

That’s an awesome story. I love hearing stories like yours. Greg just went up a few more notches in my books. Thank you for sharing. 🙌

I have a Lemond Zurich that I built from a frame 20 years ago. Splurged on some Bontrager Racelites to go a bit over the $350 cost.

I do this too. I see oldshovel, I click, and like.
Every time

I think it's the first road bike I've seen you ride - how beautiful!
I hope you enjoy it a lot.
Bravo !

Nice, I also have a Lemond Zurich as well as a Team Lemond Pro that has Columbas SLX tubing.
I'm sure the man himself, Greg LeMond would be happy to see that! Cheers to more bike builds and Happy New Year!
If my Lemond road bike was 853 I guarantee I would ride it more. Really nice build there Rob.

Very nice indeed. Quite similar to my Graham Weigh 853, although I built that with 9 speed Campagnolo Record.
I've seen good deals on old Lemond bikes. Nice steel, tig welded frames.
Very nice bike. I love the neoretro mods.
lovely bike, i feel like wearing a cycling cap, bright jersey, yellow bracelet, and hit some epo to complete the vibe. just kidding. lovely build and calming music.
Wow; three ring Ultegra with a close ratio cassette? Awesome!

Still riding my Lemond! A race bike with panache!
Classy build. Good old road bikes are so nice to ride.
Used bike for the win! great video as always
I really enjoy these vids where you let the pictures do the talking. And what a beautiful bike!
Thats a fine machine. Nice
Very nice work 🎉🎉🎉
I enjoyed watching this build very much. Thanks.
looks clean nice build
Great bike. I had one and loved it.
Mais um belo trabalho, parabéns
Ottimo lavoro, come sempre
Nn sbagli un colpo, sai sempre come potrà essere il risultato finale 🥇🤙🤙🤙👋👋👋
I'm hoping to do the same with my vintage Panasonic Road Bike 👍🤙👌🤟

Beautiful bike, congratulations !
2025...still a gooorgeous bike! Awesome build. 👊🏾
Really nice build🤝🏻🔥
Pastor said God gave every body a talent you are the best
Nice work. 👍
Came for the build, stayed for the therapy.
How many tubs of Grease have you seen the bottom of?
Do you cut the bar tape at the brake lever?
Nice build. I have all the parts for this. 10 speed cassette with 11 speed shifters?
I like the Reynolds 853 steel...Do you know what it weighs?
Very nice build, love the Le Mond 853 frame.Excellent tyre choice,I used to ride Michelin Pro2 Race, were they new old stock that you fitted here?Cheers.💯👌🏻🚴♂️
All that for $350 is incredible! I'd pay £350 alone for a decent Lemond frame in 853.
What frame size? Where in the UK?

Rob is going roadie? Nice build.
I’m dabbling 😁 in my 20’s I did a lot of road biking but after a few incidents with cars and crazy drivers I backed off a bit…

nice old chunk of iron👍
I bet its lighter than the standard bike & is it now 10 speed ?What fork did you use.
I have one of these too.
Nice bike! What is the tire clearence on this frame?
No grease?
By any chance, have you weigh it? Thanks
Is it steel or aluminium? What kinda Ultegra grupset? From the mid 90`s?
Reynolds should be steel.
Steel 853, Reynolds tubes.
853 is heat treated steel.

Nice one to the beginning of 2025!
That steerer tube shim makes me nervous. I'm sure it's probably fine, but man, if that thing slips on a descent, yikes!
There's a bike shop in my town selling a used Lemond very similar to this one. They're asking for $1,100 for it.
Well done…..
Також полюбляю старі велосіпеди,в мене "pure cycle" і "centurion"
Quite a slack seat angle, even by today’s standards?
Very desirable build, btw👍
Just say no to slammed stems!
lol 😂
Isn't it heretic to use a muqzi shim and a chris king headset so close together?
