      Absolutely cold, calculating, utterly practical. Instrumental in keeping Rosemary isolated in that apartment. She's no mad zealot in the end scene. Picks up the knife Rosemary dropped, rubs the scratch it made on her floor, and comes back with a nice hot cup of tea.

    Aw, just three years earlier, Ruth was Oscar nominated for "Inside Daisy Clover" (in the same "Supporting Actress" category, as she was here in 1969). In 1966, she lost to Shelley Winters (who fully deserved the win, for "A Patch of Blue"). We now (1969) see Ruth's big night of "shine" at the Oscars - and shine she did! Everyone laughed when Ruth remarked that her Oscar win was "so encouraging." She absolutely meant it - after many decades of acting, Ruth Gordon truly felt that she was still learning about her craft. A true star in the best sense!

      @Reginald Wilson She should have. It's one of the most unforgettable roles in history. I've still never seen Hepburn or Streisand in the movies they both tied on the win for that year but I guess they would have won anyway if she had been nominated simply because Hepburn was the Hollywood movie star and Streisand the famous singer.

      It's an astonishing performance from Mia (who i don't care for, generally speaking).
      It's one of the most naturalistic performances I've ever seen, at no time do you ever say 'she's acting'. She makes you believe 100% that she *is* Rosemary.

Whether I wanted to strangle her in Rosemary's Baby or wanted to hug her/dance with her in Clint Eastwood's orangutan movies, she was a welcome presence on the silver screen.

    Every time i ever see her, Ruth Gordon reminds me so much of my late, maternal
    grandmother, who we all called Nana. She would have turned 100 on April 12, 2011
    and they looked and acted very much alike. She was the only grandparent i ever
    knew, so it's nice to be reminded of her this way. Happy Birthday Nana!!

  • @timebandito4278

    I think the difference between the Oscars now, and then, has everything to do with the actors and actresses. Back then, acting was more about performers refining their craft and bringing their talents onto the big screen to connect with the audience and give them an intellectual and emotional experience. Nowadays, it's all about the performers saying "look at me and how amazing I am." It's not about the art anymore, but about the ego of the performers. THAT is why the Oscars have become such a platform for political tirades, extravagant outfits, and pretty much so the actors can be seen and praised by people.

    • @brettpreston1976
      @brettpreston1976 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Completely agree. I am so sick and tired of how political the Oscars have become in every respect

    • @mikephalen3162
      @mikephalen3162 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I disagree. Acting has always been about doing the best job possible. If today there are too many superhero movies and not enough adult fare, you can blame the audience, not the actors.

    • @nkt1
      @nkt1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Perhaps you're forgetting that in 1973, a mere 4 years later and almost 50 years ago, Marlon Brando pulled the biggest political stunt in the history of the Oscars.

    It was amazing how she portrayed a kind, neighborly, and gossipy friend, when it turned out she was part of an evil plot! She was sitting near Streisand at this awards, and she and her husband worked very closely with Barbra to polish up her Funny Girl role on Broadway.

I 've been watching the Oscar ceremonies recently and quite a few thespians have stated that one of the best character traits of the art/craft is ' believability '. This woman's got it by the truckloads‼️She should have gotten 2 ( two ) Oscars🏆🏆.

    I absolutely love Ruth Gordon Kanin! Fun fact The Actress with Jean Simmons and Spencer Tracy was her life story! So amazing they actually made a movie about her! Wonderful screenwriter and playwright to boot. That little woman had more talent than all the Barrymores put together. My favorite will be Mary Todd Lincoln in Abe Lincoln in Illinois. Perfect in every way!
