Hey DCA and team, I love gentleman’s knives for all the standard reasons, office work, nice clothes, non-knife people around, etc. I have several but they all have nearly completely hidden blades, requiring the use of a flipper to open, which can be flashy and draw attention, defeating the purpose of a gentleman’s knife. Will you recommend a locking gentleman’s knife with pocket clip that allows a two hand open? Thanks for all the tips and advice every Saturday.

I would recommend a folder knife forged by the elves which would glow blue as a warning when orcs or goblins are close by. Do remember that Bilbo already has a fixed blade (the sting)

Fun post!! Thanks to the chisel folder guy. The SR1 lite fits better because of the price. I don't think anyone wants to spend over $50 for a beater folder or fixed blade.
The point of spending the money on the cold steel is it will take the beating instead of having to throw it away and buy a new one.or just get an esee and if you break it they will replace it.
I am late to the party, but had to opine that from an older perspective, you could do a lot worse for a beater than a Buck 110. I carried, and used one, daily when working in a hardware store back in 1974-1976 . I cut rope, automotive rubber hose, garden hose, clear plastic flexible tubing, electrical wire, screen door screen wire, and scored wood, metal, and plastic items/stock with the back of the point. I also used it as a pry tool when needed on things the customers brought in, and yes, occasionally used it as a hammer or chisel. It was heavy, and built like a tank. I've bought several used 110's on E-bay and re-worked broken tips, and edges that looked like a saw. Still good knives for hard work, they just aren't "sexy" like some of the new stuff.
@Islander 113 is not that the 110 isn't new and shiny just that there are knives that blow the 110 out of the water for much less money. Knives that have better steel can be carried in the pocket and don't weigh more than a full sized leatherman. It's way outdated and way overpriced.

DCA - you nearly brought me to tears suggesting that anyone use a Cold Steel AD-10 for a disposable chisel. 🤯🤯🤯 Your later realization of a Mora chisel knife was spot on. I have always kept a “disposable” knife in my vehicle for emergency, usually a hardware/big box store fixed blade. If, in an emergency situation, I were to destroy a $10 knife it wouldn’t bother me. If I destroyed a $150 knife like the AD-10, I would be apoplectic.
I'd recommend the Spyderco Manix series for flickable and comfortable for large hands. The Manix XL is worth looking at, but most the family will be close to the Presidio's size and offers a ton of options.
Hello DCA! I am a newer enthusiast and I want to thank you for both your entertaining videos and your world of knowledge that you freely pass on to us. I have a question and I hope you can help. I don’t use my knives for anything other than the pleasure of owning them. Very little actual use is put on my knives (except the workers I have used for years). I enjoy the look of them and showing them off. I’m a dad of 6 and have limited budget and time, so no woods or survival type uses. No self defense either. For me it’s all about the aww they inspire when you see them. I’m looking to get both a fixed blade and a folder for a combined budget of 250-300 dollars. I know that’s not much for both, but again, 6 kids. Lol. I have a ZT 0562cf and a few other nice pieces already and I’m excited for my next additions. Thanks in advance!!!
I have used a Cold Steel GI Tanto as a chisel, and it performed very well. The handle scales fell off, and I lost a bolt, so right now they're duct taped on. The blade held up very well I just need to take the burs off from hammer strikes.
@Donald DiCorcia it didn't hurt the blade edges, but the butt of the handle and spine took the damage but not that bad. I am very impressed with that 1055.
As someone who loves and carries large folders the Spyderco Tatanka and Bastinelli Big Dragotac are the only folders I have that hit about 5" blades and they aren't cheap. I did recently pick up the Viper Rhino 1 and it's pretty nice
The Mora chisel knife & Jon Graham Razel series popped into my #ActuallyAutistic 🧠 brain before DCA finished reading the question. I have to use mine often in the field. Knife Center has taught me very well. DCA eventually caught up. You're doing a great job teaching us when your students come up with the same solutions independently of you. Great job, Knife Center.
Great episode! I shivered right along with you regarding the knife as a chisel story. That one almost hurt to think about. I was very pleasantly surprised to see you pull the BK18 as EDC-able (that’s not a word but I’m going with it) survival knife. I am really interested in that knife but rarely see it mentioned in videos like this. Probably going to get one soon. Also probably gonna grab some Mora Chisel knives. I never thought of keeping something like that on hand or at least in a car kit or tool box. Great idea. Thanks!
Most Spyderco Ergos are pretty bad for XL+ sized hands imo. Try the Caribbean or Manix XL. I find Benchmades make the best handles for big hands since they have fewer humps and lumps where my fingers need to go. The Adamas, Crooked River and Super Freek are all comfy options. Or, if you got deeper pockets and time to watch for drops, try to get your hands on an MG Demko AD20S
Mora chisel knife is awesome! great for little bushcraft stuff like making notches and flat surfaces and it’s cheap enough you can feel guild free battening on it
For the pocket chisel knife i like the slightly larger Razel. Pre-ordered mine. It came in last week and has been in my pocket ever since. Haven't had to hit it with a hammer yet, but no complaints so far.
Hey DCA! You're my go-to guy when it comes to fixed blades. Lately I've been experimenting with EDC-ing a fixie. Have tried everything from an Ulti-Clip in the pocket to samurai-carry (lol). I've found that I like cross-draw the best, and now I'm looking at the Bradford Guardian 3 as a contender for my next daily driver. HOWEVER, you being the expert you are, I wonder if the G3 has any real competition in your mind. 3.5-4" is where I'd max out. Leather sheath is a bonus as I prefer the classy look. I would recommend the Becker BK 3 Tac-Tool if you had to absolutely own something that could withstand insane amounts of abuse in an urban environment. I’ve seen Fireman junk a car with just that knife before. It’s a multi use forced entry tool. It’s not small but it’s as small as you could get for something that does so much.
I have a cold steel recon mini in cts xhp steel, spearpoint. I’ve hammered on the poor thing several times - hard too! It takes whatever I throw at it and I feel like it just laughs at me. No jiggle or wiggle or loose scales. It comes in a tanto also btw
That's why I carry a 1505 fastback at work, if I need to use the screwdriver for scraping or as a prybar I can. I still carry a regular knife if I need it.

Sure I'd like to see an all Cold Steel episode, but they're not the only ones with big knives. A Becker BK7 is a nice choice, or an Ontario SP-53 is a decent Bolo knife, all though many consider it as a machete. Perhaps you could show us what you'd consider as a good, but less expensive (but not cheap) practical, larger knife.
When I think "beater knife", I think of something cheap. Maybe something like a Cold Steel mini Kyoto I. It might not survive the hammering, but at $25, that won't break your heart.
This is why ESEE is king of the beater knives. You can have a nice knife AND beat the ever loving snot out of it knowing they will replace it no questions asked.
big on survival knives including folders, typically i carry a 4max in conjunction with a victorinox either the one hand trekker or a huntsman and havnt come across anything those two couldnt handle that was gonna get done by a folder anyways including some good warranty voiding batoning with the 4max
I used to carry a large screwdriver to use as a manual Choke for my carbureted college vehicle. A good screwdriver/pry bar in a car makes a lot of sense! Good idea with the mora chisel knife and pry bar!
Correction: If you know how to do a latch-drop, a balisong is just as fast to open as any other knife (although you then have an ice-pick grip). The single arial opening would also be just about as fast, but it's a harder skill to get used to and you risk dropping it.
For a werewolf encounter, would a silver bladed weapon be capable? Would a silver hatchet, or spear be a better alternative. Maybe even a blunt silver do-dad like a morningstar, or mace. Silver san mai with a more traditional steel core might work as well.
I beat the absolute crap out of a cold steel aus 10 5.5" tanto doing factory maintenance. It works for me for light prying and chiseling, scraping, and cutting stuff. A couple years in I'm dumbfounded by how well it withstands abuse. I wish an American manufacturer would compete.
As soon as I heard DCA talk about survival knives, I knew a Becker would be brought up. lol Ethan Becker should thank DCA for as much as he suggests Becker knives. lol They are awesome knives (especially when it comes to tough survival/bushcraft knives). Great video David and Thomas.

Hi David, The Manix Spyderco and Demko Shark Lock have almost identical handle shapes. Did one of the designers steal the design? Are there other knives with almost identical handles, from different designer's?
How about the Kershaw Barde for a cheaper beater? It has a prybar feature. If you will hit your knife with a hammer youll probably use it as a prybar too

I have a few specific questions, I saw ages ago someone with a concealed carrying set up, for a flashlight, multitool, knife and gun. Any idea where I could get one? It just looked cool and just freed up your pockets more. I have looked but only got CC holsters for guns. Also seen a guy Appendix carry a Sog Knife that had a 10” blade on it, no idea what they used to allow them to do that? Great video as always!
If you had to break down at least a hundred feet of cardboard every day, would you gravitate more toward a steel rich in hard carbides or something easier to strop and sharpen? Just curious as to preference and the reason for it. I've been happy with S110V for this type of regular cutting. Thanks.

Beater knife ? Buy a box of "beater"screwdrivers / chisels at a yard sale ( found mine for a dollar ) and keep a couple in your toolbox. Keep your knife for what it's designed to do.

Cold Steel makes some nice Bowie's, but they tend to be slow. So like a Bagwell. Hells Bell, or even the Ontario version is much faster. But the more interesting question is a Bowie versus a Kukari. Very few people understand how a strike from a Kukari turns into a draw cut through the heart of the blade.
Try to open and close a Balisong in a reverse grip, and then compare that speed with a button or axis lock. The Balisong beats them easily, and the difference in speed for a normal grip opening is negligible, compared to fast opening folders.
Hey DCA, I have kept a Morakniv Wood Chisel in my truck for the last 5 years. But last fall, I was using the Mora chisel to remove the sweep from a door in my winterizing chores, and I was thinking that I needed a tanto styled fixed blade to support the work I do with the mora. I don't want to spend too much money on this knife because it will be a true beater, but it has to stand up to a task where taking a beating or hanfling some light prying action is what it takes to get the job done. Cold Steel has the Mini-Tac , but I was wondering if there are other options that could handle the work with a tougher steel than Aus-8A?

Just bought a Bradford Guardian 3 Drop Point. Awesome little knife. The only thing that i don't like is the sheath. I'd like a leather pocket sheath for it with a clip. Any recommendations?

Am a tad sympathetic to "beater" guy, as I have been in a bind before and had to improvise. That said, hammering on a knife is not safe and chisels are cheap.
As handy chisel abuse EDC tools go, I'd probably go with the Boker Cop Tool, which is a small fixed thing/blade that's good for saving all sorts of knives from horrible abuse.
I have the AD10 tanto in S35VN steel. Don't know about the pommel being metal though. Or is it? I would definitely be using a chisel or pry bar-ish tool.

Hi DCA! I used to carry a Leatherman Wave+ with me everywhere I went, but I somehow lost it a few months ago and I've looked everywhere for it. I'm about ready to give up hope and get a new multitool, and though I love the Wave, I don't have $100+ to spend on a new one. Is there a quality multitool that's similar to the Wave but around $50 or less in price?I particularly like the scissors, but also the eyeglass screwdriver as I wear glasses and I'm picky about how they fit, so I'm constantly adjusting them. I can't seem to find any value multitools that have that. Thanks!
hey guys, fishing season is about to start soon and i am in the market for a new fixed blade. over the last few years i have carried an sog seal or a Gerber protégé. both have served me well but this year i am in the market for something else. must be fixed blade because i only have one free hand (rod in the other) must be able to cut braided line, and must be able to dispatch 40 to 100lb fish and cut out gill plates. really good serrations on at least part of the blade are also very useful. I am thinking that the new tops side kick dive knife seems to be super tailored to the task at hand but is a bit pricey. wondering if you have any other thoughts. thank you. catch BEEG FEESH

Yup! SKU: 28DE. I have one incoming! Though, for a hard use beater, I use the SR1-Lite(s) (both the DP and the Tanto). At around $40, tough to beat!

For question #1 - the Stanley FatMax Folding Chisel! It's a very good tool, unique and actually intended to be a chisel.

@BLOOD GROOVE KNIFE REVIEWS Fastcap makes similar chisels in more sizes - however, they're nowhere near as heavy duty. Still useful though.

HI DCA, I found your channel last year and it opened my eyes to the knife world. I’ve purchased several of your recommendations, my favorite of which is the QSP Penguin in S35vn. Love the sheepsfoot utility so much I want to get the mini Penguin but also really like the Baby Banter by Civvi. Thoughts or similar small 5th pocket carry knives under $100?
if you need a chisel, I recommend the Benchmade 917 rescue knife or the older 2 blade version with a pry bar and separate blade.
The BAHCO WRECKING KNIFE has a chisel variation. It is designed to allow hammering on the blade spine.

Sure I'd like to see an all Cold Steel episode, but they're not the only ones with big knives. A Becker BK7 is a nice choice, or an Ontario SP-53 is a decent Bolo knife, all though many consider it as a machete. Perhaps you could show us what you'd consider as a good, but less expensive (but not cheap) practical, larger knife.

When I think "beater knife", I think of something cheap. Maybe something like a Cold Steel mini Kyoto I. It might not survive the hammering, but at $25, that won't break your heart.
This is why ESEE is king of the beater knives. You can have a nice knife AND beat the ever loving snot out of it knowing they will replace it no questions asked.
big on survival knives including folders, typically i carry a 4max in conjunction with a victorinox either the one hand trekker or a huntsman and havnt come across anything those two couldnt handle that was gonna get done by a folder anyways including some good warranty voiding batoning with the 4max
I used to carry a large screwdriver to use as a manual Choke for my carbureted college vehicle.
A good screwdriver/pry bar in a car makes a lot of sense!

For the first guy, I'd look at a Ganzo. Maybe the 7531 or the 727. They are 20-30 bucks, crossbar lock, and usually 440c anymore.
The cold steel code 4 is metal handle and comes in tanto version
Correction: If you know how to do a latch-drop, a balisong is just as fast to open as any other knife (although you then have an ice-pick grip). The single arial opening would also be just about as fast, but it's a harder skill to get used to and you risk dropping it.

For a werewolf encounter, would a silver bladed weapon be capable? Would a silver hatchet, or spear be a better alternative. Maybe even a blunt silver do-dad like a morningstar, or mace. Silver san mai with a more traditional steel core might work as well.
I beat the absolute crap out of a cold steel aus 10 5.5" tanto doing factory maintenance. It works for me for light prying and chiseling, scraping, and cutting stuff. A couple years in I'm dumbfounded by how well it withstands abuse. I wish an American manufacturer would compete.

The Manix Spyderco and Demko Shark Lock have almost identical handle shapes. Did one of the designers steal the design? Are there other knives with almost identical handles, from different designer's?
How about the Kershaw Barde for a cheaper beater? It has a prybar feature. If you will hit your knife with a hammer youll probably use it as a prybar too

Hey DCA, hope you are doing well. What knife would you carry as an all around knife? It needs to work as a utility blade, food prep, box opener and even self defense. No automatic knives please and no lengt limit, although it shouldn't be too heavy.

Beater knife ? Buy a box of "beater"screwdrivers / chisels at a yard sale ( found mine for a dollar ) and keep a couple in your toolbox. Keep your knife for what it's designed to do.
For that first dumba-..I mean cool guy I would suggest the Cold steel pocket bushman. ^_^

It's not out yet, but the Spyderco Military 2 will probably be a sweet flickable knife for large hands.
Cold Steel makes some nice Bowie's, but they tend to be slow. So like a Bagwell. Hells Bell, or even the Ontario version is much faster.
But the more interesting question is a Bowie versus a Kukari. Very few people understand how a strike from a Kukari turns into a draw cut through the heart of the blade.
Try to open and close a Balisong in a reverse grip, and then compare that speed with a button or axis lock. The Balisong beats them easily, and the difference in speed for a normal grip opening is negligible, compared to fast opening folders.
Hey DCA, I have kept a Morakniv Wood Chisel in my truck for the last 5 years. But last fall, I was using the Mora chisel to remove the sweep from a door in my winterizing chores, and I was thinking that I needed a tanto styled fixed blade to support the work I do with the mora. I don't want to spend too much money on this knife because it will be a true beater, but it has to stand up to a task where taking a beating or hanfling some light prying action is what it takes to get the job done. Cold Steel has the Mini-Tac , but I was wondering if there are other options that could handle the work with a tougher steel than Aus-8A?

Just bought a Bradford Guardian 3 Drop Point. Awesome little knife. The only thing that i don't like is the sheath. I'd like a leather pocket sheath for it with a clip. Any recommendations?

Am a tad sympathetic to "beater" guy, as I have been in a bind before and had to improvise. That said, hammering on a knife is not safe and chisels are cheap.
I ended up going with a kershaw blur, tanto, and serrated. Given the price and 14c28n blade I think I will be OK with life's knife challenges.
I fixed blade actually takes up more pocket room, then a folder does.

As handy chisel abuse EDC tools go, I'd probably go with the Boker Cop Tool, which is a small fixed thing/blade that's good for saving all sorts of knives from horrible abuse.
I have the AD10 tanto in S35VN steel. Don't know about the pommel being metal though. Or is it? I would definitely be using a chisel or pry bar-ish tool.

Hey DCA! Since you hinted at the Crocodile Dundee knife, how about an episode of famous movie knives and if they're actually practical in use, such as the Dundee Bowie or Rambo survival knife. Maybe show better alternatives or more modern iterations.

Hi DCA! I used to carry a Leatherman Wave+ with me everywhere I went, but I somehow lost it a few months ago and I've looked everywhere for it. I'm about ready to give up hope and get a new multitool, and though I love the Wave, I don't have $100+ to spend on a new one. Is there a quality multitool that's similar to the Wave but around $50 or less in price?I particularly like the scissors, but also the eyeglass screwdriver as I wear glasses and I'm picky about how they fit, so I'm constantly adjusting them. I can't seem to find any value multitools that have that. Thanks!
hey guys, fishing season is about to start soon and i am in the market for a new fixed blade. over the last few years i have carried an sog seal or a Gerber protégé. both have served me well but this year i am in the market for something else.
must be fixed blade because i only have one free hand (rod in the other) must be able to cut braided line, and must be able to dispatch 40 to 100lb fish and cut out gill plates. really good serrations on at least part of the blade are also very useful. I am thinking that the new tops side kick dive knife seems to be super tailored to the task at hand but is a bit pricey. wondering if you have any other thoughts. thank you.

It’s become my favorite knife specifically the sheepsfoot version(oem is bestech).
