A little detail, about the only hydraulics on the FW 190 was the mechanical computer for the engine/supercharger/propeller mechanism. The main gear was driven by an electric motors with a cable attached to the main gear retracting or extending the tail wheel, the flaps also were electric. The engineering on the FW 190 was brilliant.👍
An excellent video and I must say that your labels for each of the instruments was very helpful. The way you simply labeled them and how they moved/hovered at the spot was very interesting.

I am an absolute noob who just arrived here from the War Thunder. I am grateful for this life saver tutorials! I find it funny when people told me how difficult and hard to take off or landing with the ME 262 what is the main reason I bought the game and still the only aircraft I can fly decently good enough. No difficulty what so ever If you love to do what you do and you are in love with a plane. This is the key, isn't it? I literally laughing about any complaints about the FW series! Even I found them the easiest props to fly as an absolute beginner! The most valuable part of this video was the taxing and tailwheel locking mechanism description. You helped me out with this tutorial. Many thanks! Quality content and true value!
Great Tutorial Sheriff, really enjoyed it! It covers a ton of knowledge and definitely will help others to fly the 190 better. It indeed was a lot of work to get all the examples recorded. Nice! However, I noticed something you can still improve. At 20:40 you dive away and get very fast. To keep your speed up even better, you should use your rudder to bring that little ball (slip indicator) back in the middle. When the 190 (and every other plane) gets fast, you notice, that the ball wandering a lot to the left side, letting you know the plane is flying uncoordinated. That causes a lot of drag. Bringing it back to the middle reduces drag and, especially in the 190, lets you fly even longer fast.
Hi Sheriff, I really appreciated this video expecially the engine's modes and your stop watch timing that really changed my mind about this plane and its limits. Also is always a pleasure to fly with you on Random Expert. I'm writing here to ask you a video about a no used on multiplayer plane: the macchi 202. Thank you for you vids!
Thanks Sheriff for making this video! After watching it yesterday I went on an Il-2 server today and got in my first sortie an Il-2 and in my second one a Spitfire and P-38. That video really helped me in that beautiful bird! Have a nice day/night!
Realy good work sheriff!! this video cleared up some difficulties I've been having with this wonderful aircraft. Thanks again and keep up the good work.
Just got into flying again..... This was very helpful !!!! ..... I practically dug a hole on take-offs trying to get to the runway. Still a work in progress.... Thx for the videos.
Excellent tutorial! I will add that I stalled this plane repeatedly by being a bit too aggressive with the controls. I had to tweak my joystick settings to moderate the inputs, and did this several times until I could fly the plane with confidence. I have to say that I appreciate your testing of the high power modes and their duration plus replenishment times. The plane is still a bit tricky, as you imply, and smooth inputs are the order of the day. Now I feel as if I need to spend a bit more time in the sim. :)
I think they were hydraulics though... sometimes when shot up the hydraulic system would lose pressure and the Fw would drop one or two gear legs... there are some of guncam videos in YT showing this.

Yes agree for the mig-3 too please ! Btw thanks for the tutorial ! It is very usefull ! And yes the 190 is the most beautiful plane of the game... After the mig ;)
Magic escape manouever in the 190 I used back in the Forgotten Battle days (not flown since then): Dive vertically towards the ground and just short of reaching the point of no return, roll 180 degrees and exit the dive in the opposite direction. The enemy can neither roll as fast or exit the dive as hard because they do not have the same high speed manouevrability and so they will either crash into the ground or have to abort and pull up flying in the opposite direction to you giving you separation and you are outta there.
@@SheriffsSimShack I guess we played with simpler difficulty settings back then and did not have black outs turned on, so maybe not as useful on a full realism server🤔
handling of the a3 is going to become easier with the release of the Kuban front. They're increasing the lift coefficient from 1.12 something to 1.3-1.4. Would love to see how the bird flies with a tighter turn time.
Good job, the bf 190 is a great beautiful plane ...all them. I got a tamiya 1:48 , 190 A8/R2( rustzats) and I do love it, the A4 is another one who got me crazy, dora one is too way beautiful plane as well. Cheers mate. Iron Cross for you.
Have just bought IL-2 BoS (& Kuban). Having flown both the Bf 109 F-4 & the Fw 190 A3, I vastly prefer the 190... Speed, quick responses and...the firepower! I know I need to get better with the 109 and gunnery but the Fw 190 is so forgiving of snap shots. I can hammer an enemy down, whereas it feels like poking with a pencil with the single 20mm in the 109! :)
Excellent!! Do the 109....I am having trouble (game wide) with the zoom sight...the proposing is terrible, and small input to adjust fire sends any aircraft into this bobbing that get out of control real quick. Frustrating..... I found out the hard way on that tailwheel lock...
@Sheriff's Sim Shack Can we see a tutorial of the La-5? I have limited experience with VVS aircraft and I would like to see the proper assignment of keys for engine management and overall flight and fighting characteristics of this plane. This video was excellent! Thank you for all the entertainment you share with with us Sheriff!
Thanks for this video, Sheriff! I love the FW-190, and this really helped me to understand the mistakes I was making that reduced my effectiveness. I was also wondering if you had any tips on spotting enemy aircraft that are flying lower while I'm at altitude. I find it a bit difficult to see contacts against the ground, but it's a lot easier (and more dangerous) to see contacts against the horizon while flying low. How do you spot aircraft flying lower than you while at 4000m?
Sheriff's Sim Shack It is just easier without it as planes don't blend with the background at all. Game looks shit though if you don't use some third party AA setting on top of it, especially your own cockpit with all these jagged lines and stuff. Nothing looks smooth, so it can be visually unsettling which is why you need some really slight small extra settings of additional FXAA or SMAA and that at least makes your own cockpit look much better, but since it is really small filter it doesn't affect your contacts and they still clearly pop out from the background. Technically, there are more things you can do to make really distant contacts be super visible even more but that depends heavily on the game itself as each game has a different setup to render distant contacts, but this AA disable seems to work in every combat sim/flight sim I have ever played, which is why I tend to consider it one of these golden rules of combat sims.
I tried lowering the gamma as suggested by ApeofTheYear, and that seemed to help. I'm going to try dropping it further to 0.6, but I have it on 0.8 right now. One of Bismarck's videos also highlighted that flying above 5000m makes it hard to see contacts on the deck. I can sometimes see distant contacts now, but apparently there's a 10km limit to spotting in the game.
Well done - revisiting this, still trying to find a German aircraft to fly. Very practical. Fly next: the Sturmovik of course! (Well, no, maybe not. Like asking Mario Andretti to drive a school bus in the Indy 500.)
I've found that, just as it's described in reality, the fw190 is a far easier plane to fly than the bf109. Right from takeoff you can feel the difference - the 109 is neurotic, it's got crazy performance but requires a crazy level of management along with it. Fw190 was designed by a fighter pilot for fighter pilots, and it shows right from turning the engine on, plus unlike the 109 it's not going to take the first excuse to go into a spin.
The FW 190 has an oil radiator on the very front of the cowling, it goes around the cowling inside the first ring, the second ring is the oil resivoir 17 ltr,the new damage modelling on the 190 gets hits right on the resivour but no oil spills out,is this a good thing or not.
Does this plane have any advantages to the G2 I'm usually flying? I'm thinking about getting in on the current sale, but opinions seem to be mixed about this one...
Very useful advice. I wish you'd said something about air cooler management though. Just purchased BoS after much hesitation (hardly played CoD, which disappointed me after years and years of playing all the Il2 series). Is the FW a paying add-on to the game or do you have to unlock it?
The A-3 has no controllable cooling system. The A-3 is a collectors aircraft and yes has to be purchased induvidually or with the Premium Version of the game.
Sheriff's Sim Shack Do you mean the FW 190 A3 cooling management hasn't been modelled in the game? I lack info on how cooling worked on the A3 in real life, but I do know we used to manually control air cooling on all versions of the FW 190 in good old Il2 1946 (was it just bad flight modelling?). Btw, I finally bought this plane for BoS. It sure is very unpredictable when taxing!
Pull the stick back and then its very controllable. No the A-3 was fully automated. Or the rads were just full open all the time. Dunno. The controlable cowl flaps came later. The A-5 has them, for example. See my A-5 Video for that: th-cam.com/video/X2FKievcLxk/w-d-xo.html
Hello Sheriff I need your help handling the A5. The problem is: when i slowly pull the stick, there comes a point where the plane isn't departing but just entering a spin immediately. There is just no stall/departure there for me, I'm instantly in a spin... Since I don't have a lot of experience with the A5 (coming from DCS, years of experience in the K4 and D9) is this supposed to happen or is the FM still WIP?
The A-5 has red sticks, sticking out the wing if the landing gear is extended. At the length of the stick you can estimate if it is Extended completely.
Nice guide. I redownloaded Il-2 1946, my flying days date back to the very original , Il-2 Sturmovic and then Forgotten Battles after that. Should I stick with 1946 or do you think I should get Battle of Stalingrand for online play? I like the fact that the gameplay in this is more condensed and one does not have to spend millions of hours learning the pros and cons of each aircraft because it's only the aircraft of that era and that theater.
How do you get onto voice coms on BOS IL2? Also you mentioned hooking up with other pilots to fly with? A little more on that please...thanks AKA online as Dietrich
I'm seeing that now but lmfao I CANT TURN. So basically I did what you did which was going 30 to 15 throttle but when i turn released wheel and then go back to spinning in a wild circle even at 15 throttle its quite weird btw I'm a beginner
NickNico it's takes a bit getting used to it. You can't be too slow if you want to turn. As soon as you taxi other planes you notice how nice the fw is
This video highlights to me that once the FW-190A had lost it's speed advantage in the Western front, vs the P-51 for example, it was in serious trouble.
Yes, bomber interception. But wasn't Jg2 and Jg 26 conducting fighter sweeps over Normandy for example? I'm not saying the Fw-190 was responsible for the failure of the Luftwaffe by any means, but there was a critical point from early to mid 1944 when it was outclassed by Western allied fighters.
howdi sheriff, totally off topic but, in your early W.T joystick controls set up vid, you were using a T.M hotas X, what I'm wondering is, have you had a chance to use a hotas X 4, and how do they compare? Ive had a look and no one has done a vid on this topic.💡
Apparently the 4 has hall effect sensors as oposed to potentiometer the same as the Worthog, I still get that horrible Lagg bit in the pull for the first smidgin of deflection. I will have to borrow a workmates and see. I'll let you know if there's a comparable difference.
Hey Sheriff! Do you use the trackclip Pro for trackIR or just the hat clip? I'm debating getting the pro clip as Iv heard it's better for combat fliers. Vielen Dank!
Ordered the Clip pro :) I'v owned trackir 5 with the hat clip for 3-4 years now, might as well keep it official product as it's not too expensive to order the Pro clip individually. Out of curiosity have you tried the hat clip?
The Emergency power replenish because it is limited by heat. Localized heat to be more precise. The heat of coolant is a average of the engine, but the localized heat of parts like piston ring, is more of a combination of thermal conductivity, cooling and localized heating. When the limit of the part is reached on localized level, it can cause catastrophic engine failure. This is why you can "regenerate" the emergency power, by simply letting the parts cool off a bit. Now, if it was Water Ethanol injection system, then once you run out, you run out.
Iron cross via carrier pigeon, 11/10. Also do you know if the rear wheel "lock" translates into WT sim as well? most times i pull donut's for a couple minutes before i get the 190s airbourne...
Or, well, my control setup is. Have nothing for gradual control of the rudder, so it's all or naught - which translates into alot of ass shaking and frenetic tapping on the rudder button.

The A-5 has red sticks, sticking out the wing if the landing gear is extended. At the length of the stick you can estimate if it is Extended completely.
that is the case for many aircraft
Il1946 is for todays standards pretty dated. For online play I have to recommend BoS/BoM and so on.
kk thanks, I will go that way.
Cheers
Awesome tips! What configuration do you usually use for this plane?
Extremely helpful, thanks!
Hi Sheriff. MIG 3 please. And many thanks.
neat
Great video as usual 👌
How do you get onto voice coms on BOS IL2? Also you mentioned hooking up with other pilots to fly with? A little more on that please...thanks AKA online as Dietrich
you join my discord. The end. Link is in the description.
Good brief there Sheriff, No more 'smoking hole' endings for me I hope lol.
Right when you said the easiest plane to Taxi. split a bit of my water out OMG!!! Im still trying to master taxi without plane spining out of control.
Stick back low throttle and it's really easy
I'm seeing that now but lmfao I CANT TURN. So basically I did what you did which was going 30 to 15 throttle but when i turn released wheel and then go back to spinning in a wild circle even at 15 throttle its quite weird btw I'm a beginner
NickNico it's takes a bit getting used to it. You can't be too slow if you want to turn. As soon as you taxi other planes you notice how nice the fw is
All right.
This video highlights to me that once the FW-190A had lost it's speed advantage in the Western front, vs the P-51 for example, it was in serious trouble.
+Momo mimi the later antons in the west had a totally different job and we're just there to carry big guns.
I guess they are basically the same
Apparently the 4 has hall effect sensors as oposed to potentiometer the same as the Worthog, I still get that horrible Lagg bit in the pull for the first smidgin of deflection. I will have to borrow a workmates and see. I'll let you know if there's a comparable difference.
wait what I always thought 190's were especially good at high altitude compared to russian planes :O lol you learn something new every day! cheers
+prowokator it is good against Russians. But it looses performance quickly. But the Russians as well and even more quickly.
Sehr cooles Video, danke!
Hi. How about the elevator trim? No trim or is it the same as Bf-109?
Hey Sheriff! Do you use the trackclip Pro for trackIR or just the hat clip? I'm debating getting the pro clip as Iv heard it's better for combat fliers.
Vielen Dank!
Track Clip Pro. But I can recommend cheaper alternatives like the delan clip
Ordered the Clip pro :) I'v owned trackir 5 with the hat clip for 3-4 years now, might as well keep it official product as it's not too expensive to order the Pro clip individually. Out of curiosity have you tried the hat clip?
+Hans Dietrich i still use it
Very good idea ! Thanks for the vid :)
Also do you know if the rear wheel "lock" translates into WT sim as well? most times i pull donut's for a couple minutes before i get the 190s airbourne...
nope, Tailwheels are always locked in WT.
Well i guessed I'm just horribly incompetent then... :'D
Or, well, my control setup is. Have nothing for gradual control of the rudder, so it's all or naught - which translates into alot of ass shaking and frenetic tapping on the rudder button.
+95spades that is not a good idea to Binfield the rudder to a key
Ok, tanks for the tip :)
Thank you! Love the videos :)
Great tutorial
