I was born in a different country. I was raised to understand that man created all kinds of machines. For all sorts of tasks. But i did not see my first motorcycle till i was only 5 years old. This is that bike. The KLR650 has been my mind all my life. I will buy ride and when the time comes gifted to my children.
I started as a newbie mechanic at a motor sports shop. I did a first service on a 22 KLR and I immediately loved it. At that point in my life, I only like like 200 miles on a bike. I bought it and I can't complain about the bike. It is meant to be a KLR and nothing more and nothing less. We never get them in the shop to work on and everyone there loves the KLR.
This dude has EVERYTHING for that KLR. I just got the bone stock 22 KLR 2 days ago, I'm going to hook my bike up like his. Excellent and informative video!
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. Congrats and happy riding. I'll be posting videos about how to pack for adv touring in the near future. Cheers. Nik
Dump the plastic side cases. I broke one off on my first fall. Soft luggage is the way to go. Immediately dump the tires. If you only use the bike on pavement in decent conditions then I agree that you should use them. Going off road will require tires with better traction. I agree that the side stand is too short. I put a center stand on mine and will probably get a longer side stand. It's really a cool looking bike in real life. When I first starting looking at this review I immediately went to the last part of the video to hear the important message the author wanted to give us. After hearing the message I knew this guy is way different then the normal person making a review of the bike. I went back to the beginning and watched the entire video. I learned lots from this guy and I've been riding for 50 years. Thank you for a great video that gives way more information than just a bike review. It's a review of the real use and application for using this bike.
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a positive message. Messages like yours inspire me to keep doing this despite YT very aggressive and unreliable algorithms. Very glad to hear you found your hour well invested. As for an easy fix for the short distance, I made a tutorial on how to elongate it functionally and easily by adding a hockey puck, so please take a look in my playlist for that. It increases the footprint as well. See you in the next review. Nik
A BIG THANKS! I’m a long time Goldwing rider. Lately I’ve had this deep desire to continue my ride, and keep going, after the pavement ends. I’ve been researching ADV bikes and really was undecided on the bike that was best for me. At 5’ 8” I was concerned about the height of the KLR. Your contribution was definitely helpful. After watching hours of reviews, yours was a motivator. Great review! I’m convinced, the KLR is the bike for me.
Greetings and welcome to the channel. Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to comment. I'm glad you found your hour investment in my video worthwhile. I too am an avid goldwing Rider and owner and have reviewed all my wings over the years including my first generation ones. And I also am the same height as you and think this will be a great intro to the ADV touring. I reviewed nearly every competitor in the single cylinder class on this channel in case you have more doubts, but otherwise it's a great bike to own. Good luck to you and stay in touch.
Congratulation - that's one heck of a gift! Enjoy it and let me know if you need any assistance with training or trip planning. All those details of services i offer are on my website. Cheers - Nik
Excellent review! I had a first gen KLR for a few years. I bought it used and the doohickey was broken. The reason they don’t have many warranty claims is because there’s nothing wrong with the design. The problem is ham fisted wrench twisters who can’t be bothered reading the maintenance manual. They simply tighten it until it breaks. The easy solution to the camo paint is a can of black Plastidip spray. It covers like paint but peels off when you want to.
Amazing review, i watched the hole video 'till the end without any strain! Thank you so much, we appreciate this kind of content because we know for sure you are speaking by experience.
Thank you for taking the time to watch the review and especially to participate in the conversation and be so gracious with your comment. I'm glad that you found your hour well invested. I agree that so many reviews now are tainted with sponsorships and other things that make them less valuable so I appreciate you acknowledging what I'm trying to build here with this channel. Every motorcycle that I reviewed has been my own and I take prize in that ability to speak the truth, at least as I see it. I reviewed every bike in this particular class feel free to run through the list of your comparing. Thanks again. Nik
Thanks for the answer - I wanted to say yes, but haven't actually done it, but I assume it would be fine. Thanks for the support and for watching. Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers - Nik
This was the video I've been looking for, an experienced rider giving an in depth, honest review. Thank you for that. I'm from New Zealand and looking to buy my first bike. I've been around the world twice but have never really traveled my own country. I'm in the process of getting my motorcycle license and researching my first bike. We are limited to 650cc for the first two years after getting our license. On the list at the moment is the CRF300 Rally, the new RE Himalayan 450, the Triumph Scrambler 400X, the Suzuki DR650, the Honda CL500 Scrambler and this. I think you just may have made up my mind.
Hi, very good indepth review! I am thow wondering why they leave the rear brake line hanging outside the swing arm, isn't it asking for trouble if you end up in a deep ruth ??? Thanks
I watched your video about the KLR 650 2nd gen I just got a 2016 KLR 2nd gen for 3,500 which was a steal with some upgrades included. Thanks for doing a great review it made me feel better about my purchase. See ya down the road someday. Cheers
Glad to hear it. Enjoy the bike and safe travels. Let me know if you ever need any consulting assistance with future adv trips, or want to do a local tour here in Southern California. Cheers.
I've got the 2018 model, I absolutely love it, I commute with it and ride it all year round. Aftermarket accessories are extensive. I've got the large Tusk panniers, they are bomb proof and perfect. Perfect machine for me.
Thanks for watching. If you enjoyed this review please take a look at my playlist where I review other thumpers. Two more 650 adv thumper review are coming this month so please consider subscribing to get notified. Cheers. Nik
I have a good deal lined up for a 2018 this will be my first adventure bike. Life time dirtbike rider & have an electra glide so not a newbie... any issues or concerns you could share with me? Thanks I appreciate it.
Thanks for taking the time to watch and especially to comment. I appreciate you. This weekend I'm releasing a ideo of a collision I recently had, and next weekend of the royal Enfield Himalayan. I hope to see you there. Best. Nik
I'd watched just about every 2022 KLR video out there; hands down the best is right here. The paint scheme I totally missed along with everyone out there. A very valid point which you pointed out. I pulled the trigger a month ago and purchased a 2022 KLR Adventure model. I went into this knowing that this will be the last bike I buy and I know now it was a great choice. Picked up a lot of tips watching this video. Thanks for doing this. PS: Hockey puck on my shopping list.
Great to hear that and CONGRATS on the new bike! You'll love it. IF you are new to the ADV touring game I offer private training in everything from trip planning, to gear, and riding. Please take a look on my website if any of those services appeal to you. Otherwise enjoy the bike and please do check in every now and again - I'd love to hear your impressions. Cheers - Nik
Thanks so much for this excellent review on the new Klr Adventure version. I have been vacillating for over a year now on buying this Klr . I love the look of this bike and like you said it's such a utilitarian bike. It will be my one and only Rd bike I already have a designated dirt bike . Any way due to your video and other positive reviews has helped me to finally , almost made up my mind. Kawasaki should be greatful for this awesome review. Thanks again.
Thank you for watching and for taking the time to compliment my review. I'm glad you found it worthwhile. If you're considering this bike please take a look at my playlist because I've reviewed nearly every other similar adv thumper motorcycle on the market. All the best. Nick
Excelent review! I am 50 years old, with a Himalayan for 3 years . and a freí so happy with my bike . However , i m tinking buy a KLR!! You video has a lot of information !! Thanks . Saludos desde Nayarit Mexico
Thanks for watching. The klr is a better bike in every respect. Better made with more power and performance. I've also reviewed the Himalayan and it's quite a negative experience so don't watch it if you don't want to hear someone really ripping that bike. You'll be happy with the KLR. Saludos desde San Diego.
Edit. Please edit. No disrespect, but everything just took 3 times longer than necessary to say. Having said that, it was very well done and had a lot of useful information.
@@johncummins3860 That is my thought on it. Do I have to wait a little bit on a cold morning for it to warm up? Yes. Do I get stuck out in the boonies because my injection pump quit? No. Lol
Well I have a 2014 klr, never had problem with carburetor, I swear i am thinking how to get those new 25 pounds out on a new one, should I use my infalible carburator on my new one?.
I've done both on my second gen. Kawasaki says you need not worry about it, but for your piece of mind, might as well do it. If they fail, they do after the warranty.
Man you doing good job , for one hour video ( i’ve seen all videos on your chanel) you are all but not boring and not the same like others , keep going with this great stuff... greetings from Montenegro ...🎉🎉🎉
Almost bought a sertao based upon your review, but when the new KLR came out I jumped early to avoid supply issues. My first KLR. 2100 miles and enjoying it 😀
Glad to hear my reviews seem to have been valuable to you. I think I would still choose the BMW just in virtue of its Rarity. And the low Center of gravity. But I absolutely did enjoy this new KLR and I think it looks better. You'll definitely find more support for it and it will be cheaper to own overall. A new review is dropping on Saturday of one of the leaders in this class of 650 thumpers. I hope you tune in.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours I also wanted a SWM Superdual which is kinda a KLR with 6 speeds but nearest used one was couple thousand miles away. In the end it was parts and the giant support community that pushed me over the edge.
Compliments on your video. Although I'm not an international tourer, or any kind of tourer for that matter, I just use the bike as a local commuter and a second bike to my Harley-Davidson. The information about the bike is very useful and you did a great job presenting it. Thanks.
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. I'm glad you found the review helpful. It might promote you to get into adventure touring. I've also reviewed every competitor in this class in case you are comparison shopping. Till the next one. Nick
What a great presentation with valuable information. I have been looking at a lot of different bikes and sizes. The KLR is becoming a very compelling option.
Thanks for watching - I try to make the reviews interesting to watch aside from the information. I absolutely detest helmet cam riding down the street, talking in the mic "reviews". Scenery is super important and all my review are similarly long (this one is the longest) but all have attractive footage throughout. So if you liked this review and bike, please check out my playlist full of other 650 adv competitors, like the BMW GS or Sertao. And please consider subscribing cause the next review is the Himalaya (albeit I don't recommend that bike). Also, let me know if you need purchase assistance - I search for, locate, go out and evaluate the bike and paperwork with clients for 10% of the selling price (which I assist in negotiating down of course). Also, if you need local tainting or guiding, all that info is available on my website. cheers and see you around town!
That's precisely what it's for and what it does best. A great all-arounder for your everyday needs. Thank you for sharing and I'm glad you found your time well spent looking at this review.
I actually watched your review of the 2nd gen KLR to help me decide to buy the 2022 KLR. I got mine October and i am really happy with it! I love my new KLR. I am probably going to get a new windshield; but it is really perfect for me. I have not had a motorcycle in 20 years, and a great way to get back into riding. It is super comfortable, and enough power to get on the hightway and go where i want. I want to hit some back roads and go on adventures with it. I cant think of another bike that would fit me more for my type of riding; especially at the price. I live out west too and looking forward to some deseart road trips myself. thanks for the good review!
Glad to hear you found my review helpful. Congrats on the new bike and I hope it gives you lots of adventures. I offer private ADV training and tours so if you ever would like to explore that idea, please check out my website. Cheers. Nik
Thanks for watching. I've reviewed every competitor to this bike on my channel so feel free to run through the list in case you are comparing. Cheers Nik
I have a 2001 F650GS and love the low center of gravity. It’s been a winner thus far. Pretty interested in the KLR, keep watching review after review so it must be calling me…. 😁
Yes, at this point they are more direct competitors. I have s review out between my second gen klr and my gs so take a look since it seems it would be helpful. The weight distribution will be noticable to you, but do will the 21 inch front. They are both excellent bikes so you can't go wrong either way. Cheers. Nik
I'm currently riding a DRZ400S. I'm torn.. it's a great bike. But I wince at the idea of doing an all day ride. Sure, upgrade the seat for $450 CAD but is it really going to improve it? I don't want to drop the $$ and still not enjoy it for long rides. Leaning more and more towards getting this latest model KLR.
Thanks for watching. Years and years of experience have curated my very particular list of carried items. I train riders in private sessions on this and other ADV topics, but I'd be glad to email you a checklist if you'd be so kind to sign up to support this channel via Patreon linked in the description. I strive to keep my channel independent and can only do so with support from viewers. For as little as a buck a month (with the option to pull out anytime) you'd be doing just that, and I'd have your email there to send the list to. Thanks for the support. Ps. I've reviewed every thumper adv bike on the market in case you are comparing bikes so please check out the playlist.
I think it will still be a challenge. I also don't like to lower bikes too much because it affects handling and clearance and suspension capacity. But if you must do it it will definitely help only probably when it's fully loaded to be able to put both feet down because it is a very tall bike. The off-road capability will be negatively affected by a softer suspension and the lower rear link. It's all very easy to do though so if you're dead set on this bike you could still enjoy it, just keep that in mind. Thanks for watching and participating in the conversation.
If you would like more of a lower bike from the factory, please take a look at my comparison of the KLR to the BMW 650 GS. I believe that bike has a much lower seat height to accommodate riders like you and me.
What do you think about the 2023 KLR S -- its shorter than the regular klr and would be better for shorter people like myself (also like 5'8") -- the downside is you lose a bit of clearance -- in all your years of riding the klr do you think this is a good trade off or would you rather keep the extra clearance and have the bike be a bit taller? i ask because i am looking at buying one now and unsure which to get
Thanks for watching and for your question. I'm always a fan of newer bikes especially when it comes to simple ones like the klr. Not a fan of the card work and I like the looks of the newer one. It's not a supremely off-road capable machine as it is so I wouldn't worry too much about the small differences between Gen 3 and 2 in this regard.
Makes perfect sense - I recommended the same move at the last part of this video, or the XR. In fact I did a review of the KLR Vs DR here which is the most popular video on this channel: th-cam.com/video/xiHzulc5r7s/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for watching. I appreciate your question and I actually have answered it if you look through my playlist, you'll see that I have reviewed nearly every 650 thumper on the used market, and in fact I compare the f650 GS to the KLR and then I also review the Sertao. You'll have all your questions answered there. Thanks again for watching and the next review will be of the very capable KTM sxc 625 which is a direct competitor so please consider subscribing to get notified when that review comes out. Ps, at the end of the Sertao review you'll find a little surprise, a bike that's truly one of the best BMWs made in this class that I still own. Cheers. Nick
Technjcal question. A lot of older klrs had big giant aluminum side cases. Do you think it would be better to get the klr with the center box and out your own gigantic side boxes on. Or is there other things missing on the top case version like the ports or something. And do you think kawasaki should off offered the bike with all three boxes
Good question. The top case usually can't support more than 5lb. I've seen some with a 12lb limit. That said the waiter is on top. This is already a top heavy bike. I believe the Travel version comes with only the top case. I'm a huge fan of all three cases especially for commuters so yes, they should have. Tha sk for watching.
Thank you. I miss my second generation KLR and really appreciate your perspective on the improvements on this generation as well as the way you share your wealth of experience.
Thank you for watching. I've also reviewed the second gen. As well as other bikes in the adv thumper class. This weekend I'll be releasing my review of the royal Enfield Himalayan so please consider subscribing to get notified. Cheers. Nik
Thanks for watching. I am 99% sure it can all be adjusted/switched. I should have included that in the video, thanks for a great suggestion for the future. But if you buy it in that region that uses metric system, it should already come programmed - but if you are asking for travel purposes, its a great question and I am pretty certain it can easily be changed. Nik
Nice review. I sold my Gen 1 a long time ago and I’ve been feeling the itch! In an earlier comparison between the Gen 2 and BMW Sertao, you really preferred the Sertao. Do you feel this KLR is closer to (or better) than the BMW?
Thanks for watching and I'm glad you found the review helpful. Yes I did enjoy the BMW quite a lot until I found the g650X like. Please consider subscribing to get notified when a review of my ex challenge goes live. That's my preferred bike in this whole class although now I'm riding the KTM 690. But yes that BMW and the KLR are now more on level with each other. I still feel the BMW is better off-road because of the lower weights and center of gravity. It feels like a more flickable and manageable motorcycle. Although I would not hesitate in owning the new KLR long-term. The BMW is harder to find and now is quite a bit older so I think the KLR is a better buy.
Congratulations. May it treat you well and give you many many years of adventuring. If you ever need training or route assistance, or local guiding here in Southern California to ge to know your bike, please.feel free to reach out.
Bought mine new Dec 22 and it has just over 9000 miles.no problems so far.stock tires were slick at around 3200 miles, rear anyway, so I put a set of e 07 + and it's almost time to replace the rear tire so they wear okay but are really heavy.about to bring it in for the fuel pump recall getting a little hard to start doesn't use oil, tailpipe clean as a whistle.I did put the lexx exhaust, no more power, less weight though so it helps.dont like the boiling gas and the fuel line next to head, cooler fuel would work better I think.refuse to ride in traffic if it's above 99 degrees or so, it's almost unbearable at red lights and stop and go heavy traffic ok on the highway when it's hot just not going where there's a lot of red lights.30 inch inseam I thought would be a problem and was going to lower it but after 9000 miles I don't even notice the height anymore.its a cheap, reliable bike.nothing fancy but does the job.basically the Toyota Corolla of motorcycles.
Heck yes, that's what it's all about. No better day like today friend. My channel is dedicated to adv touring so i hope you stick around and get some useful information along the way. I offer trip and route planning services and training in case that's something that interests you. All that info is on the website as well. Thanks for watching and participating in the conversation. Nik
So the klr comes with a 6.1 gallon tank. It's the only option stock available for it. There are larger gas tank offered in the aftermarket world but the stock seems plenty.
I will tell you that when I was sitting on one in the show room it gave me a near heart attack at how far over the bike leans with that kickstand. I thought I was about to commit the ultimate sin and drop a brand new bike on the showroom floor. I will tell you that when I get mine that stand is going to be the 1st thing I replace just for peace of mind and stress relief.
No doubt - I have no clue why they made this particular change. If you run through my -playlist you'll find a video guide of how to add a hockey puck to the bottom of the kickstand for increased stability. Easy, quick, cheap fix. Thanks for watching. PS - please consider subscribing cause the review of the Royal Enfield Himalayan will be released this weekend - supposedly a direct competitor to the KLR.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours Way ahead of you, Though personally I think comparing the Himalayan to the klr is like comparing the klr to the tenaray, And to my understanding it's not a fair comparison either way because the Himalayan is about twice as expensive in the United States as it is in India. Realistically a $2500 bike versus a $6000 bike only you're paying 5000 for it.
@@mrspeigle1 I agree with you on every single point there - my review is actually quite the opposite to that mostly seen on TH-cam raising the bike - I think it's a terrible little motorcycle. I bought it new and sold it 200 miles later :)
9:39- this didn't age well. My '22 fell victim to the bad fuel pump before there was even a recall. Luckily I was just using it to commute at the time and not on some adventure far away from home. Dealer took 30 days to fix and only did so in that time when I brought lemmon law to the table. Still love the bike, but... yeah, EFI isn't 100% problem free.
Glad to hear the review was helpful. Congratulations on an awesome new bike. If you need any future trip planning assistance, or anything relating to adventure touring please feel free to visit my website for services. Enjoy the bike and rubber side down.
Excellent review, thanks for doing it! So, I’m 5’10” at 180lbs, ride a touring Harley and went to check out this bike to be able to do some ADV trips. Found one pretty quick here in San Antonio and was very surprised at how big and heavy it sat and felt in the showroom… I guess I need to ride one?
Thanks for watching. Riding one will certainly give you a better feel for the bike. But yes, the weight sits fairly high. If you run through my playlist you'll find nearly every other thumper adv bike reviewed. PS: please consider subscribing cause the review of the Royal Enfield Himalayan will be released this weekend - supposedly a direct competitor to the KLR.
I have been engaged in an epic search for my first motorcycle after passing my state safety course. I have considered many many many options and have had the Gen 3 KLR650 as my final decision 2 times before changing my mind when hearing about the doohickey and or thermo bobs. After really watching a ton of videos, I am back on the KLR650 for my first bike. I know I am a noob and don't know much, but it seems that the people who are vocal about the doohickey are connected to Mike and or maybe have had bad experiences in the past with early generation bikes. I know I could be wrong, but I think I am going to take a leap of faith and get one. Thanks for this video!
I think you can rest assured in the logic that Kawasaki would have surely invested to fix such fairly simple issues if they really were as big as the forum Cowboys make it seem. Don't forget that this is one of Kawasaki's best sold bikes, and the longest in the making. I've owned multiple klrs and would do so again without a doubt. Happy hunting and thanks for participating in the conversation
@@pegasusmotorcycletours I subscribe to a number of forums, however, I don't spend a lot of time on them because of the "forum Cowboys" and the B.S. that they spew!!
Don’t forget your purchase come standard with a 12 month unlimited mileage warranty so if anything were to happen it would be covered under warranty. So even if you are considering changing the doohickey at least wait until the warranty is expired or pay for the extended warranty for two more years (which is probably the better option). Cheers ✌️
Great point on the paint scheme. I took delivery of mine on Saturday but wish the offered a nice blue or red in the adventure. I don’t necessarily think I’ll be touring abroad but ya never know. I like the black camo-esq but if they offered blue or red, I would’ve gotten that. It’s my first bike and I am super excited to play with it
Thanks for watching. I've had multiple red KLRs, including the all red and black tank, bit my all time favorite was the blue and white combo. The fairings we're blue, tank was pearl white, from 2014. Absolutely beautiful combo, so agree with you there. Congratulations on your awesome new bike though.
Great to hear you found my review helpful. good luck with the search and purchase. PS - the next review will be of the Royal Enfield Himalayan so perhaps consider subscribing to get notified. Cheers - Nik
Thank you for the excellent information and insight. I have just purchased a new Gen 3 with ABS. You have given me more confidence that I made a good decision. Do you think the Gen 3 will need a fork brace up front if I'm not planning any extreme off-roading? Thanks again!
Congratulations! You'll love your new bike. I wish you many, many years of great adventures. And yes, it would also definitely benefit from a fork brace, even in lighter off road scenarios. Cheers - Nik
Thank you. That's high praise. I am indeed. Are you new to the adv game? I offer lots of services some of which are listed on the website. Thanks for the support, glad you are liking the content.
Oh that was just the GoPro falling off. All is well with the rider and the bike, thanks for asking. And thanks for watching. If you want to see a crash, this Saturday I'm releasing the video of.my ow recent collision. Next weekend is the review of the royal Enfield Himalayan. Cheers. Nik
Would you recoment a higher windshield? I am going to order one i think. Also i enjoyed your advice on the Camo color while traveling.lol i have neveer been out of country; and never would have thought of all of that about how people might take the camo in other countries. Lucky for me i got the green one.
Thanks for watching and great having you here. A higher windshield is always recommended to help with the wind fatigue. Congrats on the new bike. You'll love it. Ps A new review of an ADV thumper will be released this Saturday to complete the playlist of that class of bikes, of the Honda XR650L. Cheers. Nik
Thanks so much for watching. I appreciate it. I've reviewed nearly every other thumper adv bike if you are looking for comparisons. PS - please consider subscribing cause the review of the Royal Enfield Himalayan will be released this weekend - supposedly a direct competitor in this class.
Thank you for watching and for participation in the conversation. I'm glad to hear you found my reviews valuable. I think you'll enjoy the second gen review and footage since that is the bike I used most on my international ADV touring.
Thanks for watching and for your time. No doubt the best thing about the KLR is that there's so many aftermarket producers. The seat could always be better.
Just stumbled across you! I have a 2016 KLR and love it. But the EFI alone is enough for considering buying a 2023. Thank you for this awesome review! Pretty sure I’ll be looking at the Adventure now lol
Greetings and welcome to the channel. I'm glad you enjoyed the review. In the playlist I've reviewed every 650 thumper on the adv market in case you are curious. I also do adv touring consulting, purchase assistance, for planning etc. Happy hunting. Nik
@@pegasusmotorcycletours Thanx Nik! I look forward to roaming your playlist! Not a whole lot of the adventures out there at dealers but they’re out there. I’ll probably drive over to a place a couple hours away and check one out this week! That EFI here in Montana is worth it’s weight in gold lol. I only have 1900 miles on my 2016 but have already experienced the dreaded carb issue.
I’ve owned over 20 motorcycles over the last forty years and not one time have I had a problem with starting or having issues with a motorcycle with a carburetor. As a matter of fact, I’ve never even had to service a carburetor.
Damn that has to be frustrating. I proke my GoPro yesterday, again, and it barely touched the ground. Sometimes it's just a bad day. The klr definitely needs crash bars. Thanks for watching.
What a fantastic review. I’ve owned a gen 1 for the last 6 years and have been looking for a new bike. I love the Klr for the physical size. The only real downside is highway performance. Would you say the rubber mounting sufficiently solved the excessive vibrations?
Thanks for watching. I appreciate your question as well. It's definitely an improvement - I don't notice the fatiguing aspects of vibration with the new style foot pegs and handlebars. It's awesome that Kawasaki decided to invest into that. I never found the highway performance to be too off-putting especially if you switch out the sprockets - I have a16 tooth in the front and that drops the RPMs at higher speeds. Easy mod.
It vibrates. I dont think you can ever change that. A 4 hour ride wears me out, but That's me. I am 53 and getting back into bikes. If you are vibration adverse, I'd suggest a different bike. The seat is GREAT in my opinion.
Great review! It helps for someone to understand what the KLR is all about. The KLR is about actually going on your adventure. BMW/KTM is all about working your butt off to afford the payments, and then not having the time to actually travel. If I scratch my KLR, or ride a ton of miles, it is no big deal. A coworker of mine has a GSA and all he thinks about is depreciation from miles and scratches (and $700 tire changes). I think Kawasaki failed on the paint scheme for several reasons. First is that you want to be seen on the road. Second, as you mentioned, being perceived as military/police in any way is bad for a civilian. That is not only in non US countries. There are a lot of people who are hiding from the law. Where do they hide out? In remote areas that people adventure tour in. Case in point was a guy who was touring in Latin America on an old OD green KLR. He was also wearing military surplus pants etc. One of the cartels saw him figured he was CIA or something and held him hostage. People took up a collection and got him out when they realized he was nobody. He still lost everything including a chunk of his life. I am riding a happy yellow 23 KLR.
Thanks for watching and for participating in the conversation. Yes of course I am quite familiar with lakeside, and we are blessed to have such great riding in our backyard. Happy to hear about your great experience with the KLR. See you in the next review. It will be about the Royal Enfield Himalayan.
Hey love the way you break your videos down. Keep it up! I will watch!!! I am in the market for a new bike. Which bike Honda nc 750 or klr 650? Honestly!
I'm not familiar with the KLE to be very honest but for me the bigger NC is super appealing. I've been looking for one as well and will pull the trigger once the right deal comes up. Maybe the KLE is sold in a market other than the us cause we only have the versys on 650.
great video! I did had a problem with my kickstand, I cut it about a 1 inch, when the bike was loaded with gear and squad it tends to tip over, mine did that twice.
Yes, i don't like the new length. I have a quick and easy solution, and I made a video about how to install s hockey puck to the bottom to extend the kickstand. Is you're interested you can find it in my playlist. Thanks for the support.
Bikes only tip over when loaded beyond the stock suspensions capacity, and the owner failed to upgrade the suspension to carry the added weight. For every action there is a reaction.
Very comprehensive review and very well done. Would love to see some Tech tips like changing or patching tubes on the trail and known issues you prepare for on the KLR specifically. What did you like about the Eagle Mike's front fork brace on the 2022 that makes it a good item to use? Thank You...
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. I'll be releasing a video about tire care in the road as well soon. If i included that info Here the review would have been too long considering it's an hour already. I like the fork brace because it makes the bike feel more planted in rough ground. I talk about it more in my 2nd generation klr review. That bike is heavily modified and allot of those modifications will apply to the third gen so i invite you to watch it for more useful info. The next review being released is if the Himalayan so I invite you to consider subscribing to get notified. Cheers. Nik
@@pegasusmotorcycletours Thanks again. I will get a fork brace. I'm heading to Death Valley in a few weeks so I'm getting some things I know I need to get for the bike for the trip. . I will be riding 3 loops each about 200 miles in length.
I never had an oil consumption issue on my KLR. The engine needs to broken in correctly. I did find the 2nd gen kickstand too long any Camber to the road and the bike was tippy Great review.
I made a tutorial video about how to add a hockey puck to a sidestand to make it longer, but have no similarity easy and.cheap solution for making it shorter and usable. Thanks for watching.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours I have no experience with the shorter stand. I can see when weighted down with gear it could be a real pain if it leans too far. Maybe Running a few welds on the bottom and playing with a grinder would get an optimum height. Thanks for your work I enjoyed it.
Great video and thx for sharing your thoughts! Watched most of yiur video and enjoy them and your presentation of. Own a ‘08 KLR and thoroughly enjoy it for all the reasons you’ve pointed out. Whether it’s a Gen 1, 2 or the new 3, think they’re all a great bike to have owned at least once with not much regrets in doing so. Thx again for sharing. 👍🏽
Thank you for taking the time to watch and to comment and compliment. I really appreciate it because it keeps me motivated. The next review I'm releasing hopefully before New years is of my 2020 Yamaha super 10 ray, another adventure touring motorcycle I'll be at in a higher class. I do really love my klrs though and look forward to the next one I inevitably purchase. Safe travels and enjoy that bike.
Look fwd to ur ST review. I don’t have as many bikes in my garage as you (only 3) but my next bike I’m leaning to is a ‘14+ ST. Thought it may rpl my 05 GW and KLR. Able to do a bit of 2up touring which I love about my GW and able to do some of the gravel road/secluded fishing spot excursions that my beloved KLR does for me and of course the ST’s known reliability. Hard decision ! Don’t get too uninspired. Enjoy the moment be it on one of yiur bikes OR continued YT success fr vid to vid. They’re always someone checking out your vids that you likely don’t even know they are. Keep up the good work ! 👍🏽
Ola Joao. I'll see what I can find although those bikes are not easy to locate here in San Diego. Thanks for your request. The next review will be of a KTM sxc625 so you might wanna check that out this Saturday. Cheers. Nik
I was born in a different country. I was raised to understand that man created all kinds of machines. For all sorts of tasks. But i did not see my first motorcycle till i was only 5 years old. This is that bike. The KLR650 has been my mind all my life. I will buy ride and when the time comes gifted to my children.
Now is the time. No better day than today. They are plentiful on to use markets and quite inexpensive.
Tu op😊pw
I started as a newbie mechanic at a motor sports shop. I did a first service on a 22 KLR and I immediately loved it. At that point in my life, I only like like 200 miles on a bike. I bought it and I can't complain about the bike. It is meant to be a KLR and nothing more and nothing less. We never get them in the shop to work on and everyone there loves the KLR.
It's a do it all on the cheap bike and I'm a happy owner as well. Gotto appreciate that in a machine.
I think the new seat is lower as well. I love mine; its a great all around bike.
Did you try the Moto Guzzi V85TT?
there is a S model that is 2 inches shorter now. im gunna get one
Great review. My wife bought me a 2022 for our anniversary and I'm in love with it.
Congratulation - that's one heck of a gift! Enjoy it and let me know if you need any assistance with training or trip planning. All those details of services i offer are on my website. Cheers - Nik
@@pegasusmotorcycletours I’ll definitely check that out!
@@dw5523 my wife bought me the adventure abs model for Christmas! Love it!
My Exwife had bought me a broom to sweep the driveway.
Enjoy Sir!
I enjoyed your review, thank you ! Gary Kerwin
Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment and share your knowledge. Much appreciated.
Will the gen 2 kickstand interchange with the gen 3?
I hate the shorter gen 3 stand.
They look the same to me but I honestly cannot say for sure since I'm not tried it.
It fits, I have gen 2 on my gen 3.
Thanks!!!
Nik
You can purchase the non adventure models to get another color then add all accessories back on, correct?
Yes you can, however it will cost a little more to buy the accessories separate.
Thanks for the answer - I wanted to say yes, but haven't actually done it, but I assume it would be fine. Thanks for the support and for watching. Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers - Nik
I believe if you buy the adventure model right off the bat you will save money if you were gonna go for the manufacturer components.
Great to hear it. Ive reviewed th himi and you can see that here
Not my cup of tea. I've also reviewed the dr650.
Hi, very good indepth review! I am thow wondering why they leave the rear brake line hanging outside the swing arm, isn't it asking for trouble if you end up in a deep ruth ??? Thanks
It sure is. Good job noticing.
The absolute best review of the KLR ever !!! Thank you !!!
Glad you feel your time was well invested. Cheers. Nik
Cheers.

Thanks so much for this excellent review on the new Klr Adventure version. I have been vacillating for over a year now on buying this Klr .
I love the look of this bike and like you said it's such a utilitarian bike.
It will be my one and only Rd bike
I already have a designated dirt bike .
Any way due to your video and other positive reviews has helped me to finally , almost made up my mind.
Kawasaki should be greatful for this awesome review.
Thanks again.

Absolutely the best review I’ve ever seen 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for watching. Cheers. Nik
Edit. Please edit. No disrespect, but everything just took 3 times longer than necessary to say.
Having said that, it was very well done and had a lot of useful information.
Thanks for the input. I certainly can be verbose. I appreciate your feedback.
I agree, Bro said the same thing in 10 different ways.
This has been one of the best informative videos on the 3rd gen KLR to date job well done

This guy is a book of information on a klr.
Love it

I've had to rescue 2 people stuck on the side of the road with failed fuel pumps. One was a BMW, the other was a Himalayan. So it can be an issue.
No doubt, it can. I've owner the Himi and hate everything about it but the looks. Felt cheap. The BMW is another story. Thanks for sharing.
Gravity is a very reliable pump !!
@@atalayaworksI watched a video one guy put an aftermarket exhaust on his and shed 10lbs so there’s a start
Do you think I should replace the thermobob or just the doohickey?
I've done both on my second gen. Kawasaki says you need not worry about it, but for your piece of mind, might as well do it. If they fail, they do after the warranty.
Review starts at about 6:00, btw.
It's true, I can be verbose, but every bike is a means to write a new story so the story must be told. What did you think of the review?
@pegasusmotorcycletours Very thorough. I've already watched several reviews so I'm already sold in the klr. 😅

WOW. I didn't think I could last through 1 hr review. Great Review, time flew. I'm pondering this as a 2nd bike. Thx, ps. I am in San Diego too.
Excellent review, thanks. I've got to get one of these bikes now, not to go touring internationally, but just as a great all rounder bike.
That's precisely what it's for and what it does best. A great all-arounder for your everyday needs. Thank you for sharing and I'm glad you found your time well spent looking at this review.
Like the black riding gear. What brand are you wearing? Thxs!
Greetings. Thanks for watching. I review it on my channel, please take s look at my playlist. Cheers. Nik
Great video and very informative!!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave feedback.
Cheers. Nik

Cheers. Nik
I love my 2012 g650gs, but I know it won't run forever. So unless BMW makes another 650 single, my next bike will have to be a KLR.
I've reviewed my drz on this cannel and I think your hunch is correct.
What is your inseam measurement?
32in
WOW! I'm impressed by your tool-kit items and essential lube, etc items. Could I get a listing of everything you carry?
I'm 5'6 with a 29 inch inseam do you think with a lowered seat and 1 inch lowering links it can work comfortably for me? I like to put two feet down.
Have the exact bike, with hard top luggage too box ..it's amazing...put about 300 miles on it in Three days...I'm very happy..
Great to hear it. They are fantastic bike. I wish you many happy miles and adventures.
I like the KLR but i just couldn't get past the weight so i went with a 2020 DR 650 and don't regret it ... its been a champ so far ...
Makes perfect sense - I recommended the same move at the last part of this video, or the XR. In fact I did a review of the KLR Vs DR here which is the most popular video on this channel: th-cam.com/video/xiHzulc5r7s/w-d-xo.html
@@pegasusmotorcycletours yes I watched that video before my purchase .. I like your honesty with your reviews

Does the KLR ABS have the same electric USB ports and other electric items as the KLR Adventure? Thanks
The KLR traveler shares the same 12 volt and USB plugs as the adventure.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours thanks. Is it possible to take the KLR 650 basic model and add the all the options like the KLR 650 adventure?

Thanks for your great video. ¿The speedometer is only in miles, not kilometers?
Best review ever man Thanks. Just bought a 2018 from a dealer. Nice bike. Yello. I’ll watch, but the KLR is a monster as a motorchicklee

Well put. Thanks for sharing
Kawasaki would be wise to listen to current owner for future improvements.
Is it worth it to get the ABS?
You don't need it.....until you needed it. So I say yes cause they retain a better value aside from being safer.
Great video, the 16 tooth sprocket went on my '23 Adventure ABS just fine ( on sprocket install)
Thanks for sharing and watching. Cheers. Nik
Some wonderful video of your adventures. EXACTLY what I am hoping to enjoy when I retire. No cell phone service would be a bonus.
Nik
Very nice review! I can tell you are the real deal
Thanks for that - I've reviewed every thumper ADV bike on the used market so take a look through the playlist if you are comparing bikes. Best - Nik
Where did you get the huge gas tank?
Thanks for sharing. I dont hear that often but am always grateful when I do
Great review, just went you and bought one. Thank you.
Glad to hear the review was helpful. Congratulations on an awesome new bike. If you need any future trip planning assistance, or anything relating to adventure touring please feel free to visit my website for services. Enjoy the bike and rubber side down.
Excellent information and love the honesty
Thanks Edgar, as always. Glad you found your hour well invested.
hell of a review brother! I'm about to pick up one just like yours..thanks!!
Congratulations. You'll love the bike. Thanks for watching and for the support. A new 650 review is coming out this weekend.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours - Subscribed. Based on several reviews of the Himalayan, it’s not really on my short list (for now).
Im on a star venture and my problem is the same as yours. Our bikes carry their weigt very low so the change to these tall bikes is weird.
Cheers ✌️
The doohickey is nothing more than online hysteria. Same thing with oil Burning issue. It’s a myth.
@@gofull123 I considered getting mine wrapped in a custom scheme. We shall see
Well done , very useful , I now own a 94 klr , looking to get a new one this year
Great to hear you found my review helpful. good luck with the search and purchase.
Do you live in San Diego? Your content is terrific.
Thank you. That's high praise. I am indeed. Are you new to the adv game? I offer lots of services some of which are listed on the website. Thanks for the support, glad you are liking the content.
I have a DRZ 400 and mostly truck my bike out to the desert or mountains and then ride around. I’m not a fan of all the traffic in San Diego.
Dang. What's the story behind 29:19?
Cheers. Nik
Great video. Thanks!
Thank you. Cheers.
Excellent review, thanks!
Thanks so much for watching. I appreciate it. I've reviewed nearly every other thumper adv bike if you are looking for comparisons. PS - please consider subscribing cause the review of the Royal Enfield Himalayan will be released this weekend - supposedly a direct competitor in this class.
Thank you for the great review of the Gen 3 KLR! I'll have to watch your review of the Gen 2 for the comparison.
Thank you for watching and for participation in the conversation. I'm glad to hear you found my reviews valuable. I think you'll enjoy the second gen review and footage since that is the bike I used most on my international ADV touring.
When you return that motorcycle to Kawasaki is it possible I'm able to purchase it as is? I would like to use it as a commuter to and from work.
Tha ks for watching. These are press only, indeed I offered to purchase ot but it is not for sale.
Great review~ Corbin just came out with a seat for this bike that I think you would love
Thanks for watching and for your time. No doubt the best thing about the KLR is that there's so many aftermarket producers. The seat could always be better.
Where is this place?
Mostly San Diego county. Please check out the tours page on my website if you're interested in a private tour of this area. Thanks
Great video!, Ya forgot the 28 to 30 degree fork rake change!. And yes it's very good change from my last 2 gen 2s!.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Glad you liked it. I've reviewed every bike in this class in case you are comparing. Nik
Is that campground off lost valley road. Love it there.
It is. What a great road and spot. Thanks for watching. Good eye.
I’ve owned over 20 motorcycles over the last forty years and not one time have I had a problem with starting or having issues with a motorcycle with a carburetor. As a matter of fact, I’ve never even had to service a carburetor.
Lucky. It takes a toll when adv touring because of dirt, altitude changes, gasoline quality in different countries, all the weight carried etc.
Crazy the plastics aren't getting damaged. I just set mine down in sand going about 5mph. Cracked the shit out of my fairing.
Fantastic point all around. Tha ks for taking the time to watch and participate in the conversation.
Awesome review , I always wanted one way back and I almost pulled the trigger due to your review .. I just don't have a place to keep it in winter
Weld a. piece of steel on the bottom of the kick stand .
Whats your pants length. I'm 30 inches I'd like to neon my feet.
The bike to tall for a lot of people probably why they lowered the kick stand
Me too. Five foot eight or 173cm.
I made a video tutorial about adding a hockey puck to the kickstand. Quick, cheap and functional. Check it out in the playlist.
LOVE THE REVIEW. I HAVE THE GEN 1 AND STILL WONT PART WITH IT. BTW I GREW UP IN LAKESIDE DO U KNOW WHERE THAT IS.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours I meant the KLR 2022 model compared to the 750 NC ?
@@St3v3nsonK the klr is more robust and adv capable than the NC. Much more off-road capabilities along with luggage and aftermarket options.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours thanks going for the KLR 2022 adv!!!!!!!!
Very good explicit review 👍
Thanks for watching. All the best in 2024.
great video!
I hope you enjoyed the Death Valley trip what a magnificent place to ride.
I never had an oil consumption issue on my KLR. The engine needs to broken in correctly.
I did find the 2nd gen kickstand too long any Camber to the road and the bike was tippy
Great review.
hi mate can you do a review on ajp spr 510r or pr5 and great vidio
