I was born in a different country. I was raised to understand that man created all kinds of machines. For all sorts of tasks. But i did not see my first motorcycle till i was only 5 years old. This is that bike. The KLR650 has been my mind all my life. I will buy ride and when the time comes gifted to my children.

Dump the plastic side cases. I broke one off on my first fall. Soft luggage is the way to go. Immediately dump the tires. If you only use the bike on pavement in decent conditions then I agree that you should use them. Going off road will require tires with better traction. I agree that the side stand is too short. I put a center stand on mine and will probably get a longer side stand. It's really a cool looking bike in real life. When I first starting looking at this review I immediately went to the last part of the video to hear the important message the author wanted to give us. After hearing the message I knew this guy is way different then the normal person making a review of the bike. I went back to the beginning and watched the entire video. I learned lots from this guy and I've been riding for 50 years. Thank you for a great video that gives way more information than just a bike review. It's a review of the real use and application for using this bike.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a positive message. Messages like yours inspire me to keep doing this despite YT very aggressive and unreliable algorithms. Very glad to hear you found your hour well invested. As for an easy fix for the short distance, I made a tutorial on how to elongate it functionally and easily by adding a hockey puck, so please take a look in my playlist for that. It increases the footprint as well. See you in the next review. Nik

I started as a newbie mechanic at a motor sports shop. I did a first service on a 22 KLR and I immediately loved it. At that point in my life, I only like like 200 miles on a bike. I bought it and I can't complain about the bike. It is meant to be a KLR and nothing more and nothing less. We never get them in the shop to work on and everyone there loves the KLR.

A BIG THANKS! I’m a long time Goldwing rider. Lately I’ve had this deep desire to continue my ride, and keep going, after the pavement ends. I’ve been researching ADV bikes and really was undecided on the bike that was best for me. At 5’ 8” I was concerned about the height of the KLR. Your contribution was definitely helpful. After watching hours of reviews, yours was a motivator. Great review! I’m convinced, the KLR is the bike for me.

I too am an avid goldwing Rider and owner and have reviewed all my wings over the years including my first generation ones. And I also am the same height as you and think this will be a great intro to the ADV touring. I reviewed nearly every competitor in the single cylinder class on this channel in case you have more doubts, but otherwise it's a great bike to own. Good luck to you and stay in touch.

Excellent review! I had a first gen KLR for a few years. I bought it used and the doohickey was broken. The reason they don’t have many warranty claims is because there’s nothing wrong with the design. The problem is ham fisted wrench twisters who can’t be bothered reading the maintenance manual. They simply tighten it until it breaks.
The easy solution to the camo paint is a can of black Plastidip spray. It covers like paint but peels off when you want to.

This was the video I've been looking for, an experienced rider giving an in depth, honest review. Thank you for that. I'm from New Zealand and looking to buy my first bike. I've been around the world twice but have never really traveled my own country. I'm in the process of getting my motorcycle license and researching my first bike. We are limited to 650cc for the first two years after getting our license. On the list at the moment is the CRF300 Rally, the new RE Himalayan 450, the Triumph Scrambler 400X, the Suzuki DR650, the Honda CL500 Scrambler and this. I think you just may have made up my mind.

Great review! It helps for someone to understand what the KLR is all about. The KLR is about actually going on your adventure. BMW/KTM is all about working your butt off to afford the payments, and then not having the time to actually travel. If I scratch my KLR, or ride a ton of miles, it is no big deal. A coworker of mine has a GSA and all he thinks about is depreciation from miles and scratches (and $700 tire changes). I think Kawasaki failed on the paint scheme for several reasons. First is that you want to be seen on the road. Second, as you mentioned, being perceived as military/police in any way is bad for a civilian. That is not only in non US countries. There are a lot of people who are hiding from the law. Where do they hide out? In remote areas that people adventure tour in. Case in point was a guy who was touring in Latin America on an old OD green KLR. He was also wearing military surplus pants etc. One of the cartels saw him figured he was CIA or something and held him hostage. People took up a collection and got him out when they realized he was nobody. He still lost everything including a chunk of his life. I am riding a happy yellow 23 KLR.

Thanks for watching - I try to make the reviews interesting to watch aside from the information. I absolutely detest helmet cam riding down the street, talking in the mic "reviews". Scenery is super important and all my review are similarly long (this one is the longest) but all have attractive footage throughout. So if you liked this review and bike, please check out my playlist full of other 650 adv competitors, like the BMW GS or Sertao. And please consider subscribing cause the next review is the Himalaya (albeit I don't recommend that bike). Also, let me know if you need purchase assistance - I search for, locate, go out and evaluate the bike and paperwork with clients for 10% of the selling price (which I assist in negotiating down of course). Also, if you need local tainting or guiding, all that info is available on my website. cheers and see you around town!

I have been engaged in an epic search for my first motorcycle after passing my state safety course. I have considered many many many options and have had the Gen 3 KLR650 as my final decision 2 times before changing my mind when hearing about the doohickey and or thermo bobs. After really watching a ton of videos, I am back on the KLR650 for my first bike. I know I am a noob and don't know much, but it seems that the people who are vocal about the doohickey are connected to Mike and or maybe have had bad experiences in the past with early generation bikes. I know I could be wrong, but I think I am going to take a leap of faith and get one. Thanks for this video!

Don’t forget your purchase come standard with a 12 month unlimited mileage warranty so if anything were to happen it would be covered under warranty. So even if you are considering changing the doohickey at least wait until the warranty is expired or pay for the extended warranty for two more years (which is probably the better option). Cheers ✌️

I actually watched your review of the 2nd gen KLR to help me decide to buy the 2022 KLR. I got mine October and i am really happy with it! I love my new KLR. I am probably going to get a new windshield; but it is really perfect for me. I have not had a motorcycle in 20 years, and a great way to get back into riding. It is super comfortable, and enough power to get on the hightway and go where i want. I want to hit some back roads and go on adventures with it. I cant think of another bike that would fit me more for my type of riding; especially at the price. Bought mine new Dec 22 and it has just over 9000 miles.no problems so far.stock tires were slick at around 3200 miles, rear anyway, so I put a set of e 07 + and it's almost time to replace the rear tire so they wear okay but are really heavy.about to bring it in for the fuel pump recall getting a little hard to start doesn't use oil, tailpipe clean as a whistle.I did put the lexx exhaust, no more power, less weight though so it helps.dont like the boiling gas and the fuel line next to head, cooler fuel would work better I think.refuse to ride in traffic if it's above 99 degrees or so, it's almost unbearable at red lights and stop and go heavy traffic ok on the highway when it's hot just not going where there's a lot of red lights.30 inch inseam I thought would be a problem and was going to lower it but after 9000 miles I don't even notice the height anymore.its a cheap, reliable bike.nothing fancy but does the job.basically the Toyota Corolla of motorcycles.

I’m sure the base model has the same generator as the adventure model and there are aftermarket power outlets available. My 2021 ninja didn’t come with power outlets but the plug is there in the wire harness to easily add one. Manufacturers save money by using the same harness in all versions of the same bike and not adding those accessories on base models. It cost more to manufacture separate wire harnesses so I’m sure it very easy to add. Same with aftermarket auxiliary light pods.

What do you think? I found this, and maybe there are more like it, Magnum Tuning:
This Kawasaki KLR 650 Camo ECU chip is an in-line tuning device that recalibrates the fuel map settings for improved HP, torque, throttle sensitivity and pep. Our ECU chip works great with other aftermarket upgrades including exhaust, intake, cam and performance ignition.
    Specs
    Claims
    17% extra Horsepower and Torque
22% faster acceleration throughout the RPM range
    6% fuel mileage improvement
Higher top end speed (until redline limit)
Improved throttle response w/o flat spots
My interest is to see if the KLR can be made more comfortable for touring with a 16t or 17t sprocket and ECU remapping afterwards, so that the fuel/air ratios are tuned to new gearing requirements. It seems like a logical thing to do because the fuel/air requirements will be different different with different liars and performance modifications.
I just found this for KLRs, Magnum Tuning ECU, and maybe there are others:
EDIT: after looking into them, I'd be cautious unless you hear otherwise. All the reviews, even by Americans, use poor English, and may not be original. And they wouldn't answer publicly when asked what advantage they have over a PC6/Power Commander. In any case, after looking into this stuff for the last 2 days, I think it's fair to say that it is easy and relatively cheap to get 20% (6hp) more power out of a KLR than stock with a quality air filter, exhaust, and EFI tuner, but would like to hear what others can add from personal experience. I don't know why EFI tuners are not more popular and we don't hear more reports on them. I have seen power curves that demonstrate 18% increases even with plug+play type EFI tuners.

    • @pegasusmotorcycletours
      @pegasusmotorcycletours  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Those certainly are impressive numbers. You'd feel them on a 650. I don't know anything about these though, but of course every bike benefits from tuning from stock. Let me know what your experience is like if you end up going this route.

Bad news: DynoJet's Power Commander KLR is better in the mid range while maintaining smooth control for the slow stuff. Looking at the maps, they achieved this by bumping up the timing advance values in the mid range. They made minimal changes to the fuel map. I'd compare the change to hitting the 'sport' button in your car or tow/pull button in your truck.
      --
      Power Commander
I don’t have one but those that have tried them on bikes in general say 1 to 2% increase. So .4 to 1.8 horsepower. Barely noticeable. The big bore kits seem to be the only thing that pumps up a KLR.
      --
I have two 2022 KLR’s both with power commanders. One has a Yoshi slip on and one has stock exhaust. Big improvement on both bikes but the Yoshi in my opinion gained at least 10% more. Much more throttle response and the added ability to pass cars on highway by just rolling the throttle instead of a requiring a down shift. Also a noticeable reduction in engine vibration at 60 to 70 mph. The engine just runs smoother. Definitely worth the money especially if your already adding a slip on exhaust.
If you add the PC to your stock exhaust it comes with a map ready for that exhaust. You’ll notice a quicker throttle response and a bit more horsepower. Add a slip on with the PC and the improvement over stock is significant. Hopefully soon, PC will have a map specifically tuned for a few different slip on exhaust options. Either way, the PC is a great upgrade.
      --
Re-Flash The ECU Or Aftermarket Tuner
Most modern bikes have an engine control unit (ECU), a small computer chip that controls (and much of the time strangles) various aspects of the bike’s performance. That chip is factory-programmed to comply with emissions and fuel requirements, but lucky for you, it can be remapped/re-flashed to uncork performance. An ECU (re)flash involves changing the stock onboard programming with a new tune usually resulting in good power gains (depending on your goals). But if you’re always changing parts on the bike (exhaust pipes, etc.), an ECU flash is probably not for you. Also, if done incorrectly your bike will suffer, so make sure the grease monkey doing the work knows the lay of the land.
Or you can go with an aftermarket fuel/power tuner (like a Power Commander or Vance & Hines FuelPak) to adjust those stock settings. Broadly speaking, tuners come in two flavors: plug-and-play units designed for stock or lightly modified engines, and those that can be programmed to add more fuel or air and tweak other settings at different ranges to make more power to meet a highly tuned engine's needs. If you've slapped on a new pipe, you'll definitely want a tuner to get fuel mapping brought into line. These units can be a much simpler and more flexible deal than a re-flash.
Result: Unless you're piggybacking with some other change, power gains won't be much, but they'll improve overall rideability.
      --
First, let me start by saying that the KLR EFI system is a version of 'speed density'. This means it monitors 'air density' to make changes to the fuel mapping using a MAP sensor and a 'narrow band' O2. The factory table is very narrow. It then uses the O2 reading to determine if the map/specified injector duty cycle is sufficient to keep the AFR (air/fuel ratio) within range (again, the factory O2 range is very narrow). It compensates for 'density' changes, ie; altitude and temperature.
The system has no way of knowing what the 'mass air flow' actually is at any given point. When a free flowing intake and/or exhaust is installed that creates a 'mass flow' increase. Same thing if one installs a 685 kit for example.
Simply bolting on 'performance parts' in general does NOT change the 'density' of the incoming air. Therefore the system has very little information to go on for making adjustments; other than it will see that the O2 reading is out of parameters for the corresponding density reading. The table the factory loads into the computer is so narrow it cannot produce appropriate compensation. Likewise, the factory has also specified rather 'lean' algorithms in regards to AFR. This means not only does the factory computer programming not have the ability (narrow band) to make enough correction but it doesn't see the 'need' to do it. Running that lean isn't going to help power output.
The Power Commander gives full control over the fuel map and duty cycle (this is key) of the injector. One could literally run the injector at 100% duty cycle but it's not recommended. It would be more practical to upgrade the size of the injector at that point to maintain efficiency and longevity.
Dynojet isn't in the business of 'making maps' for every bike and every combination. That's precisely why they have shops designated as "tuners" who employ a dynamometer. Dynojets' market is 'massive' in comparison to JD or most any others.
What the 'autotune' (wideband) does is allow an end user to apply all of the same technology that would be used at the dyno. It tunes your engine in real time and has the ability to 'fully' compensate for any performance mods. It allows the user to specify what AFR and at what RPM/throttle position you want it. It's basically the equivalent of having a "factory" programming process right on the bike. It's a 'piggyback' system which means it intercepts the OEM input signal and then 'modifies' it to meet the parameters set forth in the map table. It's basically a constant feedback loop that allows full control over fuel and timing. Once the autotune makes a recommend table the user is able to go in and 'accept' the suggested 'trims' and/or modify them. Basically, the sky is the limit (or injector size/duty cycle) capabilities.
With the setup that Willie is running and some seat time running the autotune through it's paces accepting trims (it takes many rides at different loads) to achieve, I firmly believe +10hp is not out of the question. Based on what I've seen in other applications. The big single thumper is going to benefit greatly from some ignition timing advancement because it needs more time to build cylinder pressure during the compression stroke.
I'll reiterate, the KLR is NOT highly tuned from the factory; if anything it's DE-TUNED. This got a little long but there's a lot to cover. Bottom line, the PC runs circles around any other tuning module on the market in multiple ways.
      --
I am glad the PC+AT runs circles around simple fuel tuners. And it should because it is 3.5x the price of the JD Jetting Fuel Tuner.

      33->39HP with the JD part.
You'll need Snorkel delete and I believe a Uni Filter, plus your Delkevic exhaust to get to these results.
      --
I am surprised that it is nearly impossible to find Gen3 KLR owners that have posted info on using a high performance air filter + exhaust with a quality EFI tuner or dyno tune, with or without 16t/17t. The KLR is right on the edge of being a very highway capable/comfortable with proper gearing (17t, or 16t/40t = 800 lower RPMs at highway speeds) and the potential extra power these things can provide (6hp = 20%). A BMW 310 GS will max out at 90mph, same as a KLR, while getting nearly double the fuel mileage.

Able to do a bit of 2up touring which I love about my GW and able to do some of the gravel road/secluded fishing spot excursions that my beloved KLR does for me and of course the ST’s known reliability. Hard decision ! Don’t get too uninspired. Enjoy the moment be it on one of yiur bikes OR continued YT success fr vid to vid. Please consider subscribing to get notified when a review of my ex challenge goes live. That's my preferred bike in this whole class although now I'm riding the KTM 690. But yes that BMW and the KLR are now more on level with each other. I still feel the BMW is better off-road because of the lower weights and center of gravity. It feels like a more flickable and manageable motorcycle. Although I would not hesitate in owning the new KLR long-term. The BMW is harder to find and now is quite a bit older so I think the KLR is a better buy.

I'm thinking about buying the basic model in orange. I don't really care about the do-hickey or the people whining about the thermostat coming on too early. I've never owned a bike with tube tires and worry about getting a flat tire. I plan to use it mostly for commuting and riding with my girl on the back. I rode the bike on a demo day and loved how the suspension soaked up major bumps - like crappy railroad crossings. I'm 60, and after 45 years on two wheels BELIEVE me, my back and butt welcome being babied by a long travel suspension. Because of the tire issue I'm considering a Honda CB500x. But I do want a comfy bike for two-up. Your thoughts?
By the way, great review. Very comprehensive. I think those bags are crap. That's why if I buy the basic unit I'll add the driving lights and heated grips and my choice of luggage.

    • @pegasusmotorcycletours
      @pegasusmotorcycletours  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to coment. The KLR is perfect for what you wanted to do, and a super soft suspension will soak up the road plenty well. I assume you do not plan to be taking it on any hardcore off-road adv touring so for this reason it would be a great bike for you. As for the tube tires, I wouldn't worry too much about them if you mostly ride asphalt. On hardcore dirt with sharp rocks it is possible to get pinch flats bit that's really aggressive riding and low tire pressure. They are not hard to replace if you get a puncture, bit of course it is easier to plug up a tubeless tire. But for punctures you really need to looking for that nail on the road. Avoid riding the shoulder on highways even for a short stretch cause it's full of hazards. I've had a few punctures mostly on the front, and they've never been a dangerous problem in the past although obviously something you'd want to avoid. Tube tires tend to be cheaper and easier to mount as well, albeit the wheel ends up being heavier, and on longer trips I always have to carry an extra tube which is a hassle. But that's just in case. I don't think the cb500x has tubeless tires because it's a spoked wheel if I'm not mistaken. I might very well be mistaken. It's possible to have spoked wheels with tubeless tires but it's an expensive modification from factory on the more expensive touring bikes like my Yamaha super Tenere, the BMW GS line, triumph tiger etc. You definitely do not need to worry about it though because for adventure touring tube tires are more common because they are easier to fix on the road, and tires are easier to find. That's why for example the BMW gs650 normally comes with the tubeles tire , and the more capable adventure Freddy Dakar/Sertao version comes with tube tire because it is an easier option to fix and find abroad. I hope that helped. Thanks again for watching and definitely don't worry about the tube tires.

The Honda is tubeless. Those are cast wheels.
Another bike I had a blast on was the KLX 300SM.
The Thermo-Bob fix sounds reasonable. 150F is way to low. But the doo-hickey baffles me. Why don't people just get a shorter spring with the same torsion rating instead of such a complex tear down. I can go to a hardware store and buy a spring for less than a buck!

Great video. I'm hooked on the '22 KLR. You did a very good job of pointing out how people need to be careful when touring internationally (touchy subject). I love my country and respect Ol' Glory, but it's a fool's folly to travel through a country without researching that country first. Don't assume everyone loves us Yankees, because they don't. Our government has some e'splainin' to do.

What a fantastic review. I’ve owned a gen 1 for the last 6 years and have been looking for a new bike. I love the Klr for the physical size. The only real downside is highway performance. Would you say the rubber mounting sufficiently solved the excessive vibrations?

Thanks for watching. I appreciate your question as well. It's definitely an improvement - I don't notice the fatiguing aspects of vibration with the new style foot pegs and handlebars. It's awesome that Kawasaki decided to invest into that. I never found the highway performance to be too off-putting especially if you switch out the sprockets - I have a16 tooth in the front and that drops the RPMs at higher speeds. Easy mod.

It vibrates. I dont think you can ever change that. A 4 hour ride wears me out, but That's me. I am 53 and getting back into bikes. If you are vibration adverse, I'd suggest a different bike. The seat is GREAT in my opinion.

The swap to fuel injection is an absolute no go for me. I want simplicity and fewer electronics to possibly fail in the middle of nowhere.

It's a great point. Although the efi is not usually the weak point, the fuel pump can be.

Thanks for the video. I looked at one recently. The big plastic fairing and the full dash etc seemed unnecessary, ugly and, it's a heavy bike too, didn't like that. I found a DR650 with only 1500kms on the clock and bought that. The single speedo and no fairing made more sense to me. Bit lighter too. Good luck with your Kawasaki, I'm sure it's a good bike but. Not for me.

Thank you for watching and for participating in the conversation. I did a review on this channel comparing the KLR to the dr, it was actually this channel's most successful video, and agree with you that it's a better bike all around for adventure touring. For all the reasons that you mentioned. I just have a loyalty to the KLR since all my touring has been done on one. But another great motorcycle in that class that compares more directly to the Dr is the Honda's XR650L. I reviewed all these bikes on this channel including other contenders in the 650 adventure touring thumper class. Enjoy your Suzuki and thanks again for participating in the conversation
