75 years old. Bought a new K L R in 2017 . First trip, i left Cedar City, Ut. at 9 am pulled into Butte, Montana at sundown. 725 miles no big deal! Toured Montana, Idaho and Nevada. Probably skip Nevada next time. Next trip through Wyoming, So. Dakota and Colorado. 2.trips , 5500 miles, Zero problems GREAT BIKE!
Wow - that sounds like a heck of a trip - yup, 200 miles was my daily average on the KLR - it did it all without any issues. Gotto love a machine that's that reliable. Thanks for participating I the conversation - 4 more reviews are coming up of other bikes in the 650 class (I released a video today about what's coming in 2021) so please consider subscribing to be informed when they come out. Also, please be sure to check out the related BMW Sertao review - comparable bike just more capable. I'd consider it over the F650GS. I also own a G650XChallenge - excellent bike but more dirt oriented. Cheers - Nik
Exciting news about the new KLR eh?! I look forward to getting my hand s on one of em. PS: A new review is premiering today, in an hour at noon - it is a review of the KLR's competitor, the Suzuki DRZ400 in case you've considered a much lighter and much more dirt capable bike with similar power output. I hope to see you there. Cheers - Nik th-cam.com/video/PAE6Yx7a5kA/w-d-xo.html
Yeah I can agree with you there on Nevada after having lived in the desert for the past two years, it's a real shame since it comes highly recommended by Billy Joel.
@@CREEPINGIRON you really need to do some research. There are VAST types of desert terrain. Your comment is narrow minded and honestly prejudice against the desert and really shows how ignorant you are. Like most Americans
...I salute you for keeping moving ! I'm 12 years behind you and my joints have started to give me fits and it's hard and painful to ride any distance...I wonder if I'll have to give it up, but for now I am trying to push through the pain...
Great channel. I just bought my first Gen 1 KLR 650, a 2004 with 9.5k on it. The bike was garaged for two years, I put a new battery and rode it 75 miles back home from Colorado Springs to Denver on the highway with no issues. I'm really looking forward to new adventures on my new to me "Red Pig". Today I took it apart, geave it a bath, cleaned the carb, replaced a cooling fan relay and fuses, oil and filter change, replaced the cluth cable and adjuster, all in a day, I was easy to work and in a way, satisfying. Everything you said about this motorcycle in my very short ownership holds true, I'm also coming from a BMW F650 (sold last week) and I have to tell you that I noticed the less vibration and the smoother shifting and I was blowned away by it. Again, great channel with valuable content. Thanks Nik.
Thanks so much for watching and to taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. Glad you found the video useful. Congrats on the new bike. I've owend and reviewed every thumper adv on the market and somehow keep coming back to the klr. I've had four of em. And I've also reviewed the newest one on case you want to see.what the talk is about. Safe travels!
Thank you for this very comprehensive video. I only started riding at 55 years old on a CT125, I bounced up to a Suzuki 200 to learn how to operate a clutch and now at 57 years old I just bought a 2024 KLR Adventure. I am dressing this bike up like it will be my last one, because it probably will be. I’ve installed the Thermobob and a full kit of armor from T-Rex Racing. It came from the shop with a loose rear blinker and a high beam that shoots straight to the moon. Once I iron those two things out I anticipate nothing but trouble free riding. It has been fun so far for sure! PS- I am right down the road a bit from Jackson California, good people are there and I am glad they took care of you.
Great to hear it. Thanks for sharing. Headlight have an adjuster screw to point the shine in the desired height. Look for it on either side. I don't remember how it is on the klr. If you.ever get interested in touring the eastern Sierras, please check out my trailer for that and do get in touch. I Taylor it to each private rider or.small group. Cheers. Nik
We have a similar experience there - mine was completely stock with zero issues save for the neutral light short - amazing motorcycle that are truly iconic. Glad to hear you too have had an awesome experience! Have you heard the exciting news that dropped just now about the new KLR650 for 2022? How exciting!!!!

@@brianslack7111 In my experience, the engine can take it just fine, but the suspension may not depending on the weight of the riders. My girlfriend and I are pretty average weight (for Americans lol) and I'm a fairly short guy and can flat foot really easy with both of us on the bike, whereas I'm normally on my tippy toes. If you upgrade the suspension, or if you're both pretty well south of 150 lbs. it should be fine though.
Congratulations and glad it was valuable. I also have reviewed the 3rd gen KLR. Cheers and please reach out if you'd wish to take any of my training or private tours listed here or on the website. Nik
Without a doubt, the most intelligent, detailed and candid review of any motorbike that I have ever had the pleasure of watching and listening to on youtube... Just an absolute ton of accessible information that I am positive I will benefit from should I decide to pick up a new KLR650. Think Kawasaki would be well-served to have you on their payroll to accompany the rollout of their new and improved bike, as they release it around the world. Your real world knowledge and experiences are irreplaceable and the accompanying photos and videos were just breath-taking - makes you want to start planning a trip tomorrow! Enjoyed listening to every second of your review.
Well, what else to say but thank you for such kind words - I am very pleased that you found the video useful, first and foremost, and entertaining or even inspiring - it then achieved the purpose. I've been reaching out to Kawasaki for this purpose, not to receive the new bike but to buy it early so that I could have enough time with it to review it. Hopefully they respond - in any case I do plan on getting it. Right now the garage is pretty full, 3 more 650 rival reviews are in the making so I hope you stick around and stay tuned for that - I am eager to hear from you in the future as well. Thank you again Michael - comments like these are the reason I really have enjoyed putting in the effort into this channel. Stay safe and till the next one - cheers. Nik

Keep it up, man. Your presentation, presence, delivery, energy etc is all legit. You've got that thing that can't be taught. This channel is gonna blow up. I will watch your career with great interest.
What an incredibly nice thing to say, and pleasant thing to hear - thank you so much for those encouraging words. I started this from my passion of riding with hopes to share it, and some of the knowledge I picked up along the way, and am hoping to learn from what is proving to be an incredibly awesome and generous community of riders - such as yourself. If you titled this “How I traveled a bajillion more miles than you on a budget motorcycle” (i.e. click bait, and so I respect you for not titling it that) you’d have 5,000 likes by now. I don’t get it. So much good info in this video. Good info related to your bike. Good info related to traveling on a bike. And fun to watch. Needs the love. Thank you for putting this out into the world

At 27:16 when your talking about the neutral light wire grounding out . I take it by what you said it killed the engine . When you turn the key on and put the bike in neutral did the neutral light come on ? Did the wire grounding effect any other gauge light ?
Hi there. It killed the entire electrical system on the bike (in virtue of shorting and cutting out the main fuse that hangs solo under the seat). This short needed to be fixed before the bike could run - it did not just affect the neutral wire. Great question - I should have clarified.

Great video! Love the honesty about this motorcycle! I seen this video many months ago and it was instrumental in my decision to buy a new ‘22 KLR . I’m in the break in process and another 435 miles to go then 1st service and looking forward to some fantastic times off road camping. Thanks for the influence 😁✌️
I'm very glad to hear my video was helpful for your decision making process, and that you seem to be happy with your new klr. Have you seen my review of the newest klr adventure? If you ever need trip planning assistance, or ADV training, I provide private tours and lessons. Best way to get to know your bike. Thanks again. Cheers. Nik

@@pegasusmotorcycletours I have considered the DRZ, but the lack of customization/committing capability has been a mild deterrent. I have ridden them in the past, and the bike is a blast off road. It feels more limited than the KLR in most aspects on road, but I am potentially biased as a KLR owner. The new KLR is quite exciting. At first, I had been hoping for a bit more modernization in the redesign. Upon further reflection, this could have somewhat removed the soul of the original KLR from the 3rd Gen if taken too far, so I am oddly pleased with what I have seen thus far. At the price point offered for the different trim levels, all should be well! I forsee one in my garage beside my Harley FLHR, and I greatly look forward to passing my 09 on to my nephew in the next year or two. Thanks again for what you do on your channel. It is truly fantastic! Cheers!

@Pegasus Motorcycle Tours & Consulting Thanks Nik. I will certainly check it out! On another note, I picked up a Pan America last year and, wow, talk about an interesting offering from Harley-Davidson. She is somewhat large, but I have been pleasantly surprised with the off-road capabilities. If you make it to Pennsylvania, give me a shout. You need to throw a leg over this one. Thanks for the heads-up on the posting, as I have been awaiting your thoughts. Best of luck in 2022, and I hope all is well!
Had my M1 license since I was a teenager. I’m almost 40 now and looking for my first bike. I guess the daily grind of life got in the way. This video was great. Sounds like a perfect bike for what I want to do. Thank you!
Glad to hear - excellent news and welcome to the club. There is lots to learn about the ADV lifestyle and this channel is dedicated to it. I have many reviews of 650 thumpers on my channel, as well as other relevant topics, so I hope you consider subscribing to be notified when the other 3 reviews in the 650 category still remaining (XR650, Xchallenge, and SXC625), including the new KLR650 (in conversation with Kawasaki right now to get my hands on one). The next one coming out this weekend is an interesting interview with a life long rider towing a camper behind his gold wing. Safe travels and till next time - Nik

Got mine a 2017. Just passed the Arizona motorcycle riding test today on it. Getting new tusk tires on it tomorrow, got aluminum tusk panniers to put on, KLR upper and lower dash and some bark biters and highway pegs to install.

I also have three more reviews coming out in the 650 category (KTMSXC625, Honda XR650L and BMW XChallenge). But for me the KLR will always be the favorite child. Cheers - Nik

Just found your channel, really like your content! This is one of the most comprehensive reviews I have seen. I am currently looking at a 2000 BMW F650(not gs) and a 2015 Klr650. I am leaning towards the KLR650. Your reviews have been very helpful. Thanks!
Great to hear your time here has been well invested. I compare the two bike and rhat review is in the playlist albeit its a gs. I also reviewed the sertao and had the challenge.
Loved the bit where your wife says, "I'm going to cry, I think", Classic. I keep coming back to the KLR as the choice for my next bike, for the longer rides (as much dirt as possible). I'm a return trail bike lover, coming back after 30yrs. Having done 18mths on a KLX250 & then KLX 300 mostly, relearning how to drop a bike and not hurt too much. Now prepping a KLX400e and travel gear for more weekend & longer trips, but will probably add something with more comfort and carrying capacity while maintaining a respectable dirt heritage. Love the design of the Sertao and its looks or the ruggedness of the DR, but the KLR is a great compromise with its own advantages and possibilities for improvement with a bit of love, & cash. Love your work....from down under.
Yes, that tour of Montenegro did the trick. We were engaged not a month after being together, 4 of those days spent riding the Balkan. My mother comes from exactly that village, so I took Jackie to see how she reacts to the woods whence my family comes. Roots are important especially once one leaves home for a distant land and marries into a third culture. I'm preparing a tour of the Balkans and some information is on The website, in case you feel up for an unforgettable adventure ;) Thanks for watching and great to hear you're back at it and building up your skills. The KLR is certainly one of the best compromises on the budget. I'd take it anywhere. Currently though I'm on the KTM 790. I'm taking a small group of clients to the Eastern Sierras this October so please stay tuned for those highlights. Cheers and Greetings from San Diego.
Thank you! Great review. I have a 2018 and I did all the mods possible. Doohickie, ThermoBob, Tusk panniers, crash bars, hand guards, LED lights, Fog lights, Progressive fork springs, Rear shock spring, skid plate, flat oil plug, extended shifter, foot pegs, mirrors, touring windshield, EM subframe bolts, EM fork brace, LEXX muffler, KLX carb upgrade, USB and 12 v power outlets, Handlebar risers, Phone holder, TPMS. I love it!
Ho.Ly. Smokes! That is impressive list of upgrades. I wish TH-cam comments had an attachment feature cause that would be something to see. If anyone asks what upgrades to do on their KLR, I will direct them to your comment. Welcome to my channel and to the adv community. This channel is dedicated to everything adv related so I'm glad to hear you've found the review helpful. Two days ago I released a very detailed review of the newest KLR comparing it with this one so if you're considering it, I'd recommend you watch that cause it's a much improved version. I also do a few klr verses reviews with other adv 650 thumpers. Please check out the playlist to get a full overview of this class of motorcycles. Good luck with the search and please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. If you ever need any adv specific trip planing, prepping for a big trip, route and document assistance, etc, that's what I provide and info is on my website Pegasusmotorcycletours.com. Cheers - Nik
Thanks for watching. I feel like every bike is a tool with which to create stories so that's why I do it. Otherwise they are just machines. Vehicles. If you liked this review please check out my review of the newest klr. Cheers and tha ka for being here.
Thank you for a most refreshing view on an old subject. I am still riding the 2013 I bought new in that year and my experience generally resonates with your own. But you are clearly far more travelled than I, so I am hoping you might share one more angle to the KLR story. Assuming that you have had your bikes at higher altitudes on occasion, I would like to know if you ever felt compelled to change the carb’s jets and if so, at what altitude intervals such was needed…,,, and if any other carb related adjustments were necessary? To answer your question about what features keep me in the KLR universe….. although I often think I want a different bike (and also using the 2015 Super Tenere I just sold after a rewarding 5 years as one point of reference), I worry about sacrificing the extreme ease of maintenance on the KLR (excepting the valves). An oil change is a ten minute affair as the skid plate does not have to be removed to access the drain plug or filter. And as the oil flowed out of the sump straight down without any trajectory at all, there is never any spillage. The ease and familiarity of general maintenance becomes most reassuring and indispensable……and I just don’t want to give it up………except for trading that carb for fuel injection. Thanks again for a great review. I will hope for your input re my question. Regards from British Columbia!
Thanks for particupating in the conversation and for your question. I just picked up another one yesterday. 2012 blie and white, very attractive color on the black frame. Mint and stock, unmolested. I placed an order for all the work that can to be done on these, like the doohickey, thermobob, fork brace, shims, etc etc. Enjoy it, it is a great bike. Kawasaki saw this review and invited me to the press release of the new one coming out later in the year. I hope you stick and for that review because it seems like it is a great motorcycle. They finally made it an EFI bike and it looks great too. As for your jetting question, I honestly never felt the need to do that. I'm sure in higher altitudes onw might notice a difference, but I kept the carb clean, and ridign daily does so anyways. They suffer when the bike sits. I rode on the highest road in europe, the Sommeiler Pass in the Alps, and on three separate ocasions, and never experienced issues with starting or idling. I actually made an informational guide about that road so please take a look - it's incredibly beautiful. It is in the Epic Rides playlist. I hooe this info was helpful. Thanks for being here. Cheers. Nik

Yep, that neutral light. I have removed my kickstand switch so that won't be an issue. I grew up on older bikes without the switch so it's not a big deal. The more things I can eliminate the less can go wrong. KLR is a great bike. I had the voltage regulator go out once. The bike is setup to still run the ignition without it. No lights and a dead battery, but it can be pop started and run. Enough to get home or a town. Thanks for the video!
All awesome suggestions and mods. Thanks for sharing. I've also reviewed the newest gen 3 adventure model in case you are interested in how they compare. Thanks for the support. Cheers. Nik
OUTSTANDING, HONEST, video. Been a Concours rider in Alaska since 03 and always wanted to check out those dirt roads and goat trails leading off the pavement but alas, cannot. Been wanting a KLR since 04. I think it's time. Thanks for your knowledge and experience.
Thank you for watching and for supporting my channel. Alaska is a mecca for their riding and a bike like the klr. Kawasaki just released the newest version of it this year and it's EFI and much improved. In fact they lent it to me for a month to get to know and I just returned it and was really pleased. So you'll find that particular upcoming review very helpful I think. It's the next one coming out in about a week or so. Please consider subscribing to get notified when it does. Thanks again for the support and best of luck in finding you next steed.

Did you ever get a KLR? I’ve had a Concourse since 2008 and I’d like to get something lighter and get off the pavement, I think it’s going to be on a KLR. I know most wouldn’t consider it light but compared to a concours it is.
Ok, you've sold me. Reasonably-priced, low maintenance, good range, and reliable. Only question now is whether I pull the trigger on a new one or look for a used one. My last bike was a PC800 that I used for touring in the US. I'm looking for some flexibility to get off paved roads, but am not interested in tearing up the dirt, so the KLR sounds perfect for me. Touring Europe and South America are both of interest to me, so I'd like to see a video on what it takes to ship a bike (e.g., any disassembly required, shippers that are considered reliable in the community, countries that are low-hassle (or not) for temporary import, the paperwork required, how to handle insurance, rough cost to Europe and South America, etc.). Also, great content! Being clear and specific with all the recommended upgrades was particularly helpful. Maybe get an affiliate link to Amazon for some of your recommended parts? You come across as far more knowledgeable than most, so I wouldn't hesitate to buy through your link.
Oh tat is adult classic - the Pacific Cost! Sounds like a perfect bike for a cross county US tour. The KLR indeed is a great option, and if I were you I'd wait for the new one since it has all the improvement one would have wanted. Run through the motorcycle review playlist on this channel to get inspired about other options available to you in the 650 ADV category. I have reviewed/or am editing reviews of nearly every 650 ADV touring motorcycle in the used market. If you enjoyed this I invite you to definitely take a look at the most watched video on my channel, and that is a review of the DR650 vs KLR650 th-cam.com/video/xiHzulc5r7s/w-d-xo.html Kawasaki liked it so much they invited me to the press release of the new KLR later in the year so please consider subscribing to get notified when that comes out. Also, this Saturday at noon I will premier a new review of the Honda NC700X - another great bike for the ADV community, and at the end I show which other 650 Thumper reviews are upcoming. Be well in the meantime and I hope to hear form you in the future. Cheers, Nik

Thanks, excellent video !!; I have the same, same color 2008 in Argentina, whenever I think about selling it I can't find a worthy replacement for it; It is such a faithful and versatile machine that it is hard to let go. Here in Patagonia Argentina, it is the ideal machine even without being perfect. hug
Saludos Juan Pablo and thank for being here, and for your comment. It is indeed such a workhorse - I always go back to it no matter what machines are in the garage. But there are still some worth competitors. I have reviewed most of the 650 ADV thumpers on this channel, so please take a look through my videos - I find the BMW Sertao to be a very worth competitor to the KLR. I also still have in my garage waiting to get reviewed the Honda XR650L and KTM SXC 625, as wel las the BMW XChallenge. So please consider subscribing to be informed when these come out. In the meantime, safe travels and thanks again for being here! Cheers - Nika
Also, some great news, Kawasaki invited me to their press release and extended review of the new 2022 KLR being release later this year so stick around for that.

Wow! Amazing video. Subbed just for this. I'm preparing to ride Route 66, and I knew it wasn't going to happen on the Harley I have now. Found a NOS 2002 KLR tucked away in a neighbor's garage and bought it for pocket change. Selling the Harley will pay for the trip.
Congratulations. I also reviewed the gen 3 klr, as well as all of their competitors. In fact the DR650 I sold to a guy just came back after 2 and a half years of touring Lating America. He will be doing a sit down slideshow.and QA in october so please sray tuned for that. Thanks for watching. Nik
My 2009 klr was NavyThoma8s until I got it in 2012 . He had most of the main things needed done already done . I just added and kept it up . I was in a very bad car accident in 89 and left me handicapped. It takes me places places where I would not be able to go affordable. It is a great bike for my speed also . It has ammo cans on the rear and front along with a trunk off of a Honda gold wing being parted out . It just fit well . With a paint job . It looks ok .
I agree, it's the ultimate do it all adventure mule that you don't have to baby. I'm not the kind that polishes motorcycles on the weekends so I love having a bike that I can depend on even after years of sitting abroad waiting to be ridden. Thanks for watching and for commenting. I hope you got the chance to view my newer review of the 2022 KLR.
Thanks for watching. I think the GS takes the cake overall especially if one doesn't need to take into account the difference in initial costs. More power, lower seat, more amenities.
Glad you found it useful. Be well and congratulations. If you'd ever like to try it on one of my tours, you can find mor einfo on my website. Cheers. Nik
Wow Nik. Love your video. Very comprehensive and unbiased. Just got a KLR650 and I love your suggestions. Where is your video your refer to regarding camping gear?
Thanks for watching and great to have you. Kawasaki also found this review valuable so they offered me the new 2022 KLR and that was the most recent review released last months. i also pit the KLR against other bikes in it's class so feel free to run through the playlist to see how it compares. To be very honest, the gear video was so long that it prove to be difficult to edit properly in any kind of reasonable manner. I give private instruction to riders and in my luggage class we take a few hours to run through the gear. You can take a look at my services on the website, but I charge $60 for a 90 minute phone consultation, and $100 for the private link to the video which is quite comprehensive. Thank you again for watching and for participating in the conversation. And CONGRATS on your new KLR!
@@pegasusmotorcycletours Thanks for the reply. I realize this is your livelihood, but I am an avid backpacker and already akin to packing. Was just curious how your system might differ from mine. Cheers.
@@oldsam56 Greetings - I actually filmed the review again a month ago when roaming the Eastern Sierras and am not in the process of slowly editing the parts - to break it down a bit. It will be a while though. But I too am an avid backpacker and basically the same gear comes to play - weight and multiuse functionality are key. In fact I put it all in my REO 65 liter pack and strap it to the back of the bike. I have everything I need to enjoy the backcountry, to rockclimb, to hike and even do so me fishing. Please stay tuned and thanks for reaching out.
Love my 88 klr 650, got 33k miles, no do hickey, only adjusted valves, oil, brakes, tires, battery and a clutch cable. Oh, chain and sprockets too, very dependable.

Just found your channel, liked, subscribed and the obvious... Great review, I have 2 buddies that have this bike and they do some northern Ontario touring on them. The scenery of some of your travels is simply breathtaking!! And talk about taking the road less traveled!!! Ride safe, and keep it between the ditches!
Great to have you - thanks for taking the time to say hello. Yes, the KLR is an icon in the ADV touring world. Kawasaki USA also found this review helpful so much so that in a few days I will be receiving the new KLR Adventure model to test for a month - I look forward to it since I have been interested in buying one myself. Please stay tuned for that review since that bike has all the needed improvements. Everyone is very excited about the new version. Be well in the meantime - Nik

Found and bought a 2012 model a couple weeks ago for $2800. It’s got 2600 miles on it,dark red with black moto,forks,swing-arm,rims.Looks like sw-motech bars and skidplate on it. Only thing I’ve done is an upgraded doo hick/torsion spring and bob thermo. I like the bike, the friction zone in the clutch is a bit short, doesn’t engage until the lever is almost completely released, even with free play adjustment. Other than that oddity,It’s a nice dirt road/back road cruiser.
I'm looking at a 2014 tomorrow! This review is encouraging :) And the Kawi lettering being found on the seats of the 2nd half of the 2014 run is such a pro tip! I'll look for that.

Watched the whole thing, thanks for the detailed rundown. Had a bunch of (street) bikes but this is gonna be my first dual-sport. I'm really excited to pick one up now. There's a 2007 with only 2,200 miles on it right down the road... Think I'm sold now. Thanks man.
Great to hear you found the review helpful. You will love the bike. The 2007 is the last model of the first generation so they do have some issues that needed to be addresses (mainly the doohickey) solo make sure that was or is done. Otherwise the 1st gen is awesome - a bit more dirt oriented than the 2nd. You will love it. PS - the 3rd gen is coming out this year and everyone is excited! All the best - Nik

My 2011 KLR has a very comfortable seat and good brakes and I’m pretty sure they’re stock. I just bought it in August with 9000 miles on it and some good mods. I just added luggage and an extended shift lever for my big feet. I love it so far
That's really great to hear that you are a fan of the bike. Thank you for watching and for taking the time to participate in the conversation. I also have reviewed the newest generation KLR and that has some awesome scenery as well if you're curious to see how it differs from the second gen. Stay tuned for the next review being released before New Year's hopefully of my 2020 Yamaha super tenere. Be well in the meantime.
Thanks for watching. If you enjoyed this review please take s look at my latest review of the newest klr. It's a much improved bike. Two more 650 adv thumper review are coming this month so please consider subscribing to get notified. Cheers. Nik
Great to hear you found this review valuable. Congratulations on an awesome motorcycle and I hope you stick around for other reviews in the 650 category, including the new KLR650 (in conversation with Kawasaki right now to get my hands on one). Safe travels and till next time - Nik
@@ANONYMOUSBIKERUSA you and I seem to be of the same sort - I too have a custom bagger with a 113cubic inch S&S and Baker transmission in the garage, among 6 others - nothing beats a big twin but it's great t6o be able to hit the unpaved roads so you will love ADV touring, I am sure of it.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours exactly !!!! I always see gravel roads and I want to go!!!!! But don’t take the Bagger. Can’t wait ! You think the KLR 650 is the most solid choice ? Over say a used Yamaha tenere? Or so?
@ANONYMOUS BIKER USA well, the new KLR bein released this year has all the necessary improvements over the last gen, but it doesn't compare to the tenere in performance (or price). If you are referring to the 1200 tenere, that's a very big and heavy bike that I would not consider for serious solo adv touring - It's a great bike for very light dirt stuff, but the KLR is a bit more capable when the going gets tough. If you are referring to the 700 - $$$. lots more money for a more advance bike to be sure, but it all depends on what you need out of it. I assume you won't be doing and crazy difficult dirt, but it's good to have the ability when you find yourself in a bind. That will happen when you start following the uinknown dirt road like little red riding hood. For this reason I always advocate for lighter ADV bikes in the simple to maintain 650 category. On this channel I reviewed many of these KLR competitors - all of them are lighter and more capable than the KLR, the KLR is simply the icon of the class and cheap, easy, and reliable. I think the new one looks great too, and no carb to clean. For example the Suzuki DR650 is 60 pounds lighter and that is huge, but you need to upgrade it to be ADV ready. The Honda XR650 is a large dirt bike, and the BMW GS650 line gives you ABS and heated grips, low center of gravity and 50 Hp. I also onw a KTM 625 SXC and that bike is barely over 300 pounds so I have confidence to take it anywhere alone- plus the suspension and power are wild - I don't know how they do it,. But for your needs - just getting in the game - the KLR is the perfect choice that needs no upgrades out the door and can go around he world tomorrow (or when you are ready :)
I really enjoyed your video. Whatever you said is so spot on with my experience. You did a great job. I like the way you spoke...clear and no repeating of stuff. Also the video shots of your vaccinity is nice. Looking forward to more of your vids. Great Job
Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to comment. If you liked this one I invite you this Saturday to the review of the newest KlR650. I had s chance to get to know it and it's a much better version of this bike. I try to incorporate beautiful scenery in all my reviews, and have reviewed most of the 650 thumpers on they channel. Oi. Obrigado. I appreciate you watching and commenting. May it serve you well. I too had a red one I bought last year with only 400 miles on the clock. As well as a blue and white one, that's probably my favorite color scheme. I also reviewed the new Klr if you are interested in how they compare, and next weekend there will be a new review released of the royal Enfield Himalayan. Valeu. Nikola
Well done. I have a 2012 I got late last year. then had hip surgerty Dec 2020. Just this weekend i took it to an OHV forest in Uhwarrie forest. It was so much fun! And like you said in the video. If you have a lot of testosterone and speed is your thing. This is not the bike for you! But, you will arrive home safe like Pegasus mentioned. I was really impressed with the ride in the forest. Tracking was really great, rocks, just pick your line and look ahead. I love mine thus far. My poor harley ultra limited has only been out to get an inspection. But I love that bike as well for touring!
Thanks for being here and I am glad you enjoyed the review. I too had the ultra classic (with a sidecar) and it's definitely a unique riding experience. I also am in conversation with Kawasaki to get my hands on the new KLR to review, so please consider subscribing to be notified. I also have three more reviews coming out in the 650 category (KTMSXC625, Honda XR650L and BMW XChallenge). Cheers - Nik

Absolutely - Especially on the 1st generation - Kawasaki claimed it not to be a problem for the second, and my KLR had 35k hard miles without any issues, but I still recommend it - I hope that was clear in the video. This is a 2008 (first year of the second generation) . The second half of 2014 had a few imrpvoements to the seat and suspension as well but looks the same. There is a new one comimg.out this year and it is EFI and modern looking. All depends on your budget and location, ie, how well are the offeringa where you live. I offer that service for local buyers, to assist them in their purchase, so let me know if you are near and if I can help. Cheers.

If you got bad gas in a FI MOTOR, you would loose your fuel pump. Draining a carb takes literally 1 minute. The carb can be built to produce far more hp than any computer flash for your FI bike. Turn your fuel off, and let the bike idle until it runs out of fuel at the end of every day, and you will NEVER have an issue with the carb.
All great, great recommendations. I appreciate that very much. I think it's a valid argument (Carb vs EFI) to this day, so much so that 2021 models still come with a carb. I am compiling a video on the pros and cons of both and I might reach out to you for more of your insight - I really appreciate it and I hope to hear form you in the future (PS, I assume you are not a fan of the change to EFI in the new model then?) Nick, great review. Had a 2003 I put 15k miles on. Everything you mentioned is spot on my experience. I lived in Nevada then and told everyone KLR stood for King of Lousy Roads. BLM Roads, firebreaks and even single tracks into the desert it gobbled up UNTIL I hit sand. That weight up high made it difficult. Didn't like the Dunlops so went to Kenda 761s. Liked them much better. I'm older now and in Central Pa. so I moving to either RE Himalayen or BMW 310 GS.
Hi Kevin - great to have you and thanks for being here and participating in the conversation. Glad you found it valuable. I myself just picked up a Himalayan - brand new 2021 so I am curious what it could do although I already find it rather underpowered if that is important to you. Otherwise retro styling and switchable ABS. The BMW is just too expensive for what one gets in my opinion - I spoke of it in my two 650GS reviews on this channel. I will be selling the Himalay to a subscribed member on this channel shortly at a discounted price than what can be had at the dealer - stay tuned for a new video this Saturday where I introduce the idea of how subscribed viewers can get their hands on the bikes I review for a great price. Hope to see you there. Cheers. Nik

@@pegasusmotorcycletours Thanks so much for the response... I have watched a whole of your vids recently.. and now i have my heart set on the Bmw F650 GS
I have a 2013 20,000kms (Australia) and agree with most of what you said, the seat is blown foam , that's why their uncomfortable, a air cushion or change to a Seat Concepts seat is a dearer solution. Yes the first thing to fix is the Doohickey, with the Eagle Mike part you showed, with the round torsion spring drilled in behind the leaver, the key thing is make sure the lock stud is torqued 8 Newton Metres so it doesn't slip open and let the chain slack, it will eat the chain guides, then your cases!!
Thank you so much for that insightful comment. I really appreciate it. And thanks for being part of this community all the way from down under. Be sure to tune in today for the permite of a new motorcycle review in excited about. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Cheers - Nik

Very good review from you bro. Love all the informations you really put your mind into making this video. I am thinking of buying the klr after been riding many sport bikes, would love to do some cross country and klr650 would be a good start.

You can't go wrong with it cause its simple, easy to learn and maintain, and reliable, and has everything you need for even a round the world adventure. The new body stile fixed all the main issues and will be coming out later this year - I'd consider it for the money. A very comprehensive review. 👌🏼 I’m 5’8” with about a 30” inseam and 150 lbs. In your opinion, could I make this bike work with a lowering kit and perhaps an aftermarket seat? Thank you for your input. Regards from Vancouver.
Thanks for watching and for participating in the conversation. I also am 5'8 and was able to take this bike more or less anywhere I wanted. When it's loaded down with the soft suspension it sinks quite a bit. You will not be flat-footed, but with riding boots it won't be so terrible. When I was touring I was just about your size as well. Feel free to run through the playlist and you'll see that I have also reviewed the newest klr. Happy hunting and see you in the next review.
Hi. Well, if you go by the book you will check clearance more than twice, to be sure, but it will rarely require any adjusting. In my case the first or second recommended checks didn't require new shims. It's hard to say, re mileage cause it al depends on the type of use - loaded, hard, fast riding in dusty conditions which is common in the ADV world. Under these conditions a 100k is usually a good mark to aim at before planning to have the top end rebuilt.

Great video. I have enjoyed my '08 since new. Gotta remember that KLR stands for Keep Loctite Ready. OEM tires are junk for offroad. Otherwise, still one of the best values in motorcycling.
Cheers. I was on the fence for it, but I'm now decided on buying an '08 now(can't afford something newer). Thanks for your comment. What would be the top 3 mods you will make first to your machine after all this years of experience?

I do - I put many miles with a passanger on the bike during my intl travels. Don't plan on doing any hard dirt thoug, nor super fast highway cruising, but it will do just fine. Be sure to upgrade the subframe bolts on each side to a stronger class metal, because there will be extra weight on it. Good luck and please stay tuned for a proper review of the 2022 KLR - Kawasaki saw this review and invited me to the press release and everyone is very excited. Good luck! Nik

Hey there. First off you're videos are great and massively insightful and helpful. I'm just buying my first bike, and I've found a 2015 krl650 and a bmw g650gs around me, the ladder being a hundred cheaper (and also inspired by this video to search for before going through with the klr). which one should a beginner go for? I've never ridden at all. I want to mainly commute and have a sturdy mostly road worthy commuting/traveling bike, but I'm also going for dual sport/adventure cause I'd of course like to do a little light off road and trails eventually. Anyway, you seem to like the bmw more, but if you had to say for a beginner? I do prefer the bmw looks wise. But yeah, your advice would be so appreciated. Thanks again for the great and insightful content.
Hi there and welcome to the channel. Thanks for your question. I do make it a point to respond to all the comments, so I appreciate you participating in the conversation. All things being equal I would definitely go for the BMW oh, just because you also get the ABS which is most useful to New Riders who are getting used to the brakes. It's a safety mechanism and it's worth its weight in gold when needed. The BMW is also more manageable due to the weight being lower. So it will be easier to learn on. That said both bikes are very reliable and will not disappoint. Whichever you choose you'll have a blast, but again, all things being equal I would go for the BMW instead. If you decide to upgrade, the new KLR is coming out later this year and has all the necessary improvements. I did many reviews of the 650 ADV class on my channel so I hope you take a look and get more information for your new awesome Hobby. Or lifestyle. Best of luck to you, and please let me know how you like your new bike.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours Hey there! First off, thank you so much for engagin. Not just with me clearly. But in general. I obviously speak on behalf of everyone when I say you're the man for responding to (from what I saw as I was browsing your vids) every comment. Like you must be an angel. Not only because of that, but because somehow I found your vid (then again its most popular on youtube) about the KLR, and also the one comparing it to the BMW, at the perfect time. And I was enlightened at the very last minute to search the BMW on facebook marketplace. I found it and got it. Its a 2012 second gen g650gs (from what I can tell researching em). When I was watching your vid I got obsessed with the one you were presenting (Sertao), but this one is awesome enough. Any tips on it? Like I said I've never ridden. But I have some friends who ride and they're cool to help me. Also the ABS. What exactly does that entail? I did a lot of research on those bikes and bikes in general in that window where i was deciding, but I'm still really ignorant, and I've never been knowledgeable with vehicles in general.

Loved your video. I have a 2013 model with 8000 miles but because of the heavy top-weight (I weigh less than 130 lbs) I'm thinking about selling it and getting a Himalayan. I hope you can do a comparison of those two bikes?
Thanks for being here! Yes, it's quite top heavy and unfortunately the new one is going to have the same characteristic, but I am excited to get my hands on one and get to know it and review it in the coming year. There have been requests from me for that review - the Himalayan, and I do plan on doing that. Right now I am focusing on completing the 650 thumper class, so I have two more in my garage waiting to get ridden and reviewed. The KTM SXC 625 and the Honda XR650L - so please stay tuned and I will be sure to search for one locally to buy and review it in the near future - I don't see too many of them for sale on the used market honestly. Thanks for your request and glad to have you here! Nik

Just put the windshield riser on mine. It's the best upgrade to date for rider comfort. Bought it new in 18 and wish that I'd of done it to begin with. At the dealership they put the tall windshield because I'm tall but it simply dumped wind in my face.
Yeah, the stick windscreen is very short indeed. That was a huge improvement on the gen three, another klr I've had the pleasure to learn and review. Thanks for watching and taking the time to participate in the conversation. Nik
Hi. Thanks for watching. Not bad at all. I always had a quart in my bag but don't recall needing it often. It's still very good on not burning oil. It's not an issue, really. Be sure to go through my channel to see how the Klr. Compares to other adv thumpers. I actually have one for sale now in San Diego if you happen to be near. Ask if I can help with anything and best of luck to you.

Your videos are amazing! You helped me rebuild the carb on my new to me 2008 DRZ400. I had to do it several times because I thought you were too thorough:)
I'm extremely grateful that you found that tutorial helpful. Thank you for being a part of this community and for supporting this channel. I made another DRZ400 specific tutorial on how to install a desert tank. I also made a tutorial on how to extend a stock kickstand by installing a hockey puck, so please take a look through my playlist that interests you. More 650 Adventure touring motorcycle reviews are in the making so I hope you subscribe to get notified. The next video being released this Saturday is all of my nine motorcycles currently in my garage, love all different types oh, so I hope to see you there. Welcome again until the next one.

Astounded that a Japanese bike shifts smoothly.. you need to ride more Japanese bikes. They are popular for a reason. Great review, thorough and informative. Thanks. Always good to have a review from someone who really knows their bike, like you do.
Thanks so much for that support. I'm very glad to hear my review has been helpful to you. If you enjoyed this review please run through my playlist because I have reviewed nearly every other 650 thumper ADV bike on the used marketplace. The last video released was of my current garage if you're curious, 6 out 11 of which are in the adv touring class. The Next review will be of the Royal Enfield which I just sold after 250 miles (bought new so tells you how bad it is), and this week I'm filming the review for my KTM SXC625 - amazing bike. Thanks again for the support.

Thanks for sharing, I don't know that product. That's great to hear something like that exists. I appreciate it. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Cheers. Nik
I owned a blue klr650, was awesome bike. Later I bought a Suzuki vstrom 1000. Probably two of the best motorcycles ever produced. 100 HP vstrom is definitely a hot rod but the klr would kick ass if you trusted it's abilities. Owning both bikes should definitely be on your bucket list, you won't be disappointed.
I really enjoyed your video. Quick question, for someone riding a yz250 dirtbike with motocross background/little on road motorcycle experience, is this a suitable first touring bike? My seat height on dirtbike is 39". Thanks and I enjoyed this video!
Hi. Thanks for being here and glad you enjoyed the video. 39 is quite a tall bike and with your background, you'll find this KLR very heavy and not very dirt capable. A more suitable next bike for you, in my humble opinion would be the DRZ400, or if you are set on a 650 - heck out a DR650 by Suzuki, or the Honda XR650L - I have reviewed all these bikes (XR review in the making), so I hope you find them helpful. The KTM 625 SXC and the BMW XChallenge also are much more dirt oriented and around 300-350 lb. Good luck in your search and let me know what you ended up with. (PS, I am also the owner of these last two and am in the process of filming and reviewing them too, so please stay tuned for those and consider subscribing to be notified when they come out) Cheers- Nik

Great video! Those look like some intense adventures! As for getting water in the tank, a small bottle of methyl hydrate (also known as methanol, methylated alcohol, or wood alcohol) will absorb and disperse the water in gasoline. A product like seafoam mixed at about 30ml/L will also help with crappy fuel. Two things a person can carry in small amounts for a potential rescue when fuel quality is unknown. I carried some of each when travelling through wide rural areas when I usually had to buy fuel from farmers. Hope this helps somebody.
Thanks so much for sharing that. I really appreciate it. Where would one get something like the wood alcohol? I'm very familiar with seafoam and have been amazed at how much it helps in this scenario. I carried with me in any international trip for the same reasons. Great to have you on the channel and thanks for taking the time.

I would highly recommend against such a large tank - I have never experienced difficulties in finding gasoline in time for the KLR given its 6.1 gallon tank. 4 more gallons would add close to 28 pounds of weight up top and it would make the bike much harder to control. Chances are if you are in an area where you might need ten gallons of gas, the first necessity would be drinking water actually. But point taken, I will put a video together about all the accessories that are possible for this bike (anything and everything is). Please consider subscribing to be notified when new reviews come out - the next one will be about the 9 bikes in my garage at the moment. Hope to see you in future videos. Cheers - Nik

Yes, the older gen is a tad more dirt oriented, not as aero dynamic due to smaller plastics, but just as reliable save for the need to replace the doohickey (i jist did that last week on my second gen amd its not terribly difficult). Be sure to inquire if it has been done yet. The spring tends to fail and bounce around in there which is very bad for the engine. Other than that the bike is very reliable and fairly similar.

Cheers. Nik
I bought a KLR three years ago and have beating the tar out of it ever since. 30000km later, no major problems and no doohicley issue!
We have a similar experience there - mine was completely stock with zero issues save for the neutral light short - amazing motorcycle that are truly iconic. How good are they on the interstate 2up?
@@brianslack7111 In my experience, the engine can take it just fine, but the suspension may not depending on the weight of the riders. My girlfriend and I are pretty average weight (for Americans lol) and I'm a fairly short guy and can flat foot really easy with both of us on the bike, whereas I'm normally on my tippy toes. If you upgrade the suspension, or if you're both pretty well south of 150 lbs. it should be fine though.
I'm buying a used KLR and this video has given me so much information. Thank you
Very glad to hear that it was helpful. I have also reviewed the newer KLR and that's quite an informative review.

Thanks again, welcome to the community, and I look forward to whatever is ahead. Cheers - Nik

Excellent review
Thank you very much.

Pretty good bow. Watched this years ago and just came across it today. Thank you for what you do and what you did.
Thank you for taking the time. Much appreciated.

My klr has been bored to 682. Its a freaking beast. Lots of power and speed
Never experienced it with the bored out kit. Thanks for sharing.
Love how you get into your personal life Nik, makes the video that much more special. Great video as always!

Did you ever get a KLR? I’ve had a Concourse since 2008 and I’d like to get something lighter and get off the pavement, I think it’s going to be on a KLR. I know most wouldn’t consider it light but compared to a concours it is.
Really enjoyed this video. Will visit it again. Thank you.
Thanks for the support. I have also reviewed the newest gen klr and almost every competitor. Cheers. Nik

Hi great review. So which is better - the g650gs or the KLR?
Thanks for watching. I think the GS takes the cake overall especially if one doesn't need to take into account the difference in initial costs. More power, lower seat, more amenities.
Thanks for the great review. I’m just about to buy one to add to my fleet😎

Congrats on the great find. They are such great universal bikes.
I'm looking at a 2014 tomorrow! This review is encouraging :) And the Kawi lettering being found on the seats of the 2nd half of the 2014 run is such a pro tip! I'll look for that.
Happy to hear it - enjoy it and please do let me know your thoughts. Thanks for being here! Nik

@@pegasusmotorcycletours will do bud!!!! I have a sport bike, Bagger and mid size currently. ADV is calling my name ! Lol
Great Job

Awesome video man! I bought a red 2009 in November and have been enjoying every ride. Parabéns!
Oi.
I too had the ultra classic (with a sidecar) and it's definitely a unique riding experience. great video do you think a beginner tall rider have a klr 650 as his first bike ?
You'll be all set - this is a great bike for you then, cause it is tall and tame. Try it though and get a feel for it first. I've reviewed all the other competitors on this channel so run through the playlist for more ideas. Thanks for watching.
At 23:59 the doohickey you show has to be done on all the klr's including the 1st gen not just the 2nd gen .
Absolutely - Especially on the 1st generation - Kawasaki claimed it not to be a problem for the second, and my KLR had 35k hard miles without any issues, but I still recommend it - I hope that was clear in the video. I appreciate your comment and you being an active member of this channel's community - please consider subscribing to be informed when the following reviews of three more ADV bikes in the 650 category come out throughout the following months (Honda XR650L, KTM SXC625, and BMW Xchallenge). Hey. Great to have you here. I ha e reviewed nearly every 650 thumper ADV bike on the used market so please so go through my playlist to see what your options are.
I am compiling a video on the pros and cons of both and I might reach out to you for more of your insight - I really appreciate it and I hope to hear form you in the future (PS, I assume you are not a fan of the change to EFI in the new model then?) Did u notice the green neutral light doing funny things beforehand? I also sputtered out on the road a couple of times, I have to check this out asap.
Not really, if didn't give any symptoms before that. Sputtering is usually a fuel delivery issue. Good luck with the doagnosis.
Great video my friend👍🏻 I just bought a 2006 KLR for my son. We Will be riding from California to The arctic circle via the Dalton Hwy this July of course I’ll be taking my new 2022 Triumph Scrambler XC 🤣 Thanks again for this very informative video 👍🏻

Nick, great review.
Cheers. Nik

Would you say this gen 2 klr is a good starter bike for a 35 year old man? Is it still relevent today?
Absolutely. Very relevant that's why the gen 3 came out two years ago.

Happy hunting and see you in the next review.
how many miles the engine is supposed to last? if you said valve clearance will be checked twice at the most for the lifetime

Cheers. I was on the fence for it, but I'm now decided on buying an '08 now(can't afford something newer). Thanks for your comment. What would be the top 3 mods you will make first to your machine after all this years of experience?

Do you think this bike is good for 2 up riding or you have a recommendation?
I do - I put many miles with a passanger on the bike during my intl travels. Don't plan on doing any hard dirt thoug, nor super fast highway cruising, but it will do just fine. Be sure to upgrade the subframe bolts on each side to a stronger class metal, because there will be extra weight on it. Good luck and please stay tuned for a proper review of the 2022 KLR - Kawasaki saw this review and invited me to the press release and everyone is very excited. Good luck!

What a nice Pitbull you have there at the 8:00 mark!
Thanks so much. She's a rescue, came to us at 6 weeks with a leg in a cast. Very beautiful dog in every way. I appreciate y watching and commenting.
Nik
Your uncle is a great man to watch that for you.
No doubt. I love having that bike waiting and not worrying about it starting or deteriorating from sitting.
How was the oil consumption on your KLR? I’m strongly considering getting one.

Astounded that a Japanese bike shifts smoothly.. you need to ride more Japanese bikes. They are popular for a reason. Great review, thorough and informative. Thanks. Always good to have a review from someone who really knows their bike, like you do.

There is a product called Heet that will evaporate and remove water from gas as well as prevent fuel from freezing down to -40 degrees F
Thanks for watching. Ice owned two vstroms so far and actually the first review on this channel many was of my 1000 ;)
I really enjoyed your video.

Please do a video on all the accessories we can possibly add including BMI's 10 gallon tank.

Do you Think the 2001 klr 650 is good as well ?
Yes, the older gen is a tad more dirt oriented, not as aero dynamic due to smaller plastics, but just as reliable save for the need to replace the doohickey (i jist did that last week on my second gen amd its not terribly difficult). Be sure to inquire if it has been done yet. The spring tends to fail and bounce around in there which is very bad for the engine. Other than that the bike is very reliable and fairly similar.
