The Short Story Of Narain Karthikeyan, India's First EVER F1 Driver

แชร์

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 25 ต.ค. 2020
  • Narain would show an interest in motorsports from a very early age, he took inspiration from his father, a talented rally driver who won the South India Rally seven times. Narain set himself a goal, and that was to become India’s first ever Formula One driver. So with that in mind, let’s look at his early motorsport career. Narain would see some decent results, with a podium in Formula Maruti, an open wheel, single seater category that is made and raced in India. He would later become a semi finalist in the Pilote Elf Competition driving a Formula Renault car but then returned to India to continue racing in Formula Maruti. Then Narain would compete in the Formula Vauxhall Junior championship in Great Britain, something he enjoyed and gained valuable experience from. In 1994 he would race in the Formula Ford Zetec series as a number 2 driver for foundation racing team. He would score a podium that year at Estoril in a support race for the Portuguese Grand Prix. Narain would compete in the British Formula Ford Winter Series, win the championship, and become the first Indian driver to win any championship in Europe. Quite an awesome achievement, if you ask me.

Think the issue with the Maini brothers has a lot to do with budget. Kush was originally going to be having his 2nd season in Formula Renault this year but Covid based issues stopped it. He got a last minute drive racing in British F3 and has done a solid job this year but whether he'd be able to get further up the ladder with the associated costs that come with it is another matter.

Bascially, he could have been a pretty good driver for that series if he stayed, but instead went back to being a backmarker in F1. What a big missed opportunity...

Hate that in India, it's mostly cricket and very few get to live the dreams of driving in any motorsports. We need F1 and MotoGP to focus on India too. I know the custom duties and tax is high but India does have a lot of following when it comes to motorsports and we deserve an Indian Grand Prix, Hope We see F1 cars and MotoGP bikes roaring at BIC.

Narain's performance at Macau also was incredible. He led for the majority of it, but DNFed...another one of those moments when we thought, 'Imagine he won Macau'

06:04 It's great you mentioned 2012, cause I have a conundrum in terms of aerodynamics about this year of F1. I just have to phrase it wisely. So, prepare for the unexpected! 😉

Always the case with drivers further towards the back of the grid...how much could they have shown if they'd managed to get their butt in better equipment. Was he a future world champion that we missed out on? Almost certainly not but he wasn't as dreadful as he is sometimes portrayed.
