Just a note of thanks for this video. My 2006 e53 had this exact issue. A full 24 gallons would register 1/3 full only on the gauge, so I pulled the rear seat cushion and voila, mice chewed thru the 2 wires on the driver's side (16 gallon) tank. So, vacuumed the nest out, separated the frayed wires from each other, trimmed them (about 4 inches has zero insulation, almost down to the plug), soldered in new wire, reassemble - the gauge is now reading a full tank like it should for the first time in 5 years. Just wish I had found this video earlier.
The Milwaukee heat gun is super handy for heat shrink. Its also super nice to keep in your vehicle to give your hands a rapid warm up to drive during the coldest months.
Someone in past changed the fuel level sender unit, wasn't careful with the wires when bolting the metal cap. It can happen on the fuel pump side too - tiny wires in the fuel tank easily get compressed when installing the housing. I did it - so I had to do the same thing as Jason. Watch out!
I’m so tempted to get an E53 3.0d. I’ve currently got a Vauxhall Insignia 2.0cdti (Buick Regal) and I love it. I used to own an E46 and the constant repairs I had to do is somewhat putting me off getting another old BMW 😅
To get direction on this issue, you can also do the test Nr.6 on the cluster. It shows both fuel levels as well as the method of calculating (in this case probably "Phase 3", since one sensor did not respond).
It is generally better to intertwine the two wires first and then twist them together. Strongest and smallest connection (is a bit more difficult, especially in the car).
Hi am Giles from Africa I have a E53 the fuel level sensor got broken and I have a new one but I realize that there are two tubes in the fuel tank don't know how to fix it please advise thanks
funny. I replaced my fuel pump, and I show half a tank right after being filled.. after I drive about 20-30 miles the level goes up to full... I thought it was the float so I pulled the new pump out and worked it.. but nope. I know it shows low properly as I put in as much gas as I ever did at E and I get the same mileage... oh well. Car has almost 200K miles on it, I just count it as a character flaw
@@jberzin3 I could, if I cared. as I said, old car, not my main car, and it does actually work... and if I fill it from 3/4 take to full it reads full.. not worth the pain of diagnosis at this point.
Well hello stranger!! We’ve missed you Jason!!
The helping-hands honor their name!

So glad to be seeing you again
So glad he's back

i could not believe it ! same exact thing with mine , a mouse did it , thanks for the video ! 👍👍
I just did the same repair on my E53 2 months ago. Pretty sure mine was caused by mice. Saw your post and said out loud...'no way'.. haha
Woohoo! Fixed it. Very satisfying. I wonder why it frayed and parted as the thing has an easy life under there.

You Are the best!!
Always interesting and instructional, many thanks ‘Kid.

Looking at those massive soldering irons, my TS80 looks like a toy lol.
Interesting to use heat and flame near a fuel source

So did this work?
I'm car temperature gauge does not work anymore. It keep going all the way to red and sometime to blue.

Where is the fuse that make the gas hand work on a 2009 BMW work
Please show mw how to replace the fuel sender unit

The resistor strip may be damaged in the sender. Or at full the contact goes over. You can measure resistance changes with multimeter.
