- In this video, we show you how to change the battery in the BMW key fob. To replace your BMW Smart Key Battery, you will need a CR2450
But to replace your Comfort Access BMW Key Battery, you will need a CR2032 battery
If you have a BMW key that has a side indent, this means you have a rechargeable battery. Therefore, this battery charges when it is inserted in the ignition.

Thanks bro, saved me an hour and whatever they would have gouged me at Steven’s Creek BMW. SOOOOO EASY!!!
Glad it helped
Thanks! Saved me 100 bucks.
Glad it helped
You dont need a screwdriver, the end of the metal key is shaped to remove the back of the key fob to access the battery 🙂
This helped me. Simple and clear. Thank you!
Glad it was useful
Have had the car for a month and needed to replace my battery. Thanks for the video
You're welcome. Glad it helped
extremely simple and helpful! thank you!
Glad it helped!
Great Video & very Helpful !~Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
My Landrover fob battery was soldered onto the motherboard.. I still replaced the battery myself because of anger .. plus they wanted like $375
Nice and easy. Thanks!
Glad it helped!
Great video and still valid for i4 fobs. Thanks
Worked like a charm, thanks!
Thanks for the video. Mine was kind of stuck, thought I was going to break the plastic cover.
You are welcome!
Thank you! Super helpful!
Glad it helped
Can't get the cover back on. Slid the sections in properly but it won't snap shut. Too much pressure will break it. It is in the fridge now (don't laugh) in hopes that the plastic will contract. It is very humid today.
came here for how to get the lid back on, lol ty!
Very helpful. Thanks
My question,
is key need to reprogram with the car after changing the battery? My key battery is discharging in these day.
The physical key also fits in the hole so I just pushed it in gently and the lid popped off, literally no tools required
(it's slightly different on my 2017 320 but same principle)
Hope sending this video to my wife will sav her an uber trip home for the backup keys
it did, thanks mate!
Nice
In the U.K. The battery cell on my 3 series 2013 and her 1 series 2017 is a CR2450.
Interesting. So different types based on markets
@@bmwblog Just FYI the difference there is the generation not the marketplace. A UK 2019 3 series, or 2021 X3 would have the same key battery you showed in the first section - a CR2032.
Thank you so much
Couple of notes: The video shows a BMW replacement key fob. It has an asymmetric shape with pointed end. The OEM BMW key fobs are rounded rectangular. I have one of each (the dealer where I bought it probably lost one of the originals). However, I went to a dealer and they could not download the service data from the aftermarket fob. The aftermarket replacement uses a CR2032 and the on board chip does not carry all the data that the originals do. Many used car dealers replace a lost original with a cheaper aftermarket fob. It will still function when programmed. The OEM keys use a CR2450 and has an on board chip that stores all error codes and service data.
This is an original key fob. 100%
The first one is an original fob. Its the one that came with my ‘16 X5
Newer BMW's (I have a 2021, and have had loaner 22s/23s) all have the asymmetrical key as OEM - it's not aftermarket.
Is a 2002 BMW x5 fob have a battery that can be replaced
Yes
Thanks!
Welcome!
Thanks
I really need this for my bmw 228i 2021
Which part?
I was told you can't just change the battery because it knocks out the immobiliser and you can't start the car so how do get around that little issue🤔
immobiliser?
Ok . But not going to recharge from the key cassette?
Dealership would love to charge $100 for this. Also you don’t need any screwdriver, BMW design the key that you took out to take off the plate.
True on the screw driver. It was just easier
While this is true, I wouldn't recommend it as the tip of the key is much larger than the little notch. If you don't have a screwdriver, I recommend you try your thumbnail or nail file so you don't damage the plastic housing of the key fob. (Chuck from the vid)
@@chuckvossler9010 no. There is a indent bmw put there to let u open with the key
Easy when you know how - Thank you
Happy to help
Unfortunately you raced through the most important part. Locating the tiny notch and twisting to pop off the cover
if it doesn't work ....scrape battery - side with a razor blade ( battery has some kind of film on it ???)
Maybe pause for a couple seconds on the shot of notch.
Good advice
To be honest … that was poor. The battery is a tight fit and popping it out does not occur was you hinted.
Not sure why it didn't work in your case. It seems to be okay for others. What key do you have?
Thank you - very helpful!
Glad it helped! We're here to make it easier
