Great video and explanation of WHY you need to register your battery- many people have roasted their batteries because they didn't know they were supposed to do that. Also, that specific CTEK Battery Charger is a very good one, I have it too. It even comes as an OEM stock part with many higher-end cars, it's a very good investment.

I have never understood the fascination with amp hours. I could be completely wrong but your car either starts or does not. Once it starts the alternator should provide all the power needed to run whatever in the car or they are some crazy voltage paths being taken to charge and discharge a battery at the same time. Amp hours simply refer to how long a battery will supply a certain amperage for how long without a charge. I start my track car with a battery that weighs less than 4 pounds. Of course on a cooler day I need to use a jump box since the oil is thicker but once the car is running and up to temp zero issues for the rest of the day. I saw another video claiming that different things in the car were affected by the battery and its efficiencies. Would love to get an explanation of what and how as once the car is running...again the alternator is doing the work.
Exactly my concern, I’m looking to swap out the battery on my f22 and I could care less if the car can run alternator-free for 5 hours, I just want a lightweight battery that starts the car (maybe not an extremely small one since I’m daily driving it) but not a massive one.
Justin did his homework. BMW batteries get replaced regularly by new PNs with different specs. These Battery PNs are good for E9X and F3X BMWs. If you are in Los Angeles BMW Parts Pros has a much better price on BMW Batteries. Keep in mind that you can't ship Lead Acid and AGM batteries. Get AGM Batteries in a black case (Lead Acid use a white case). To check the BMW Battery PN Fitment use a Canadian BMW Parts site to show 812 is superseded by E29. HaHa EP AGM Battery 92AH/850 CCA 61212353812 (Old Battery PN - might still be available) EP AGM Battery 92AH/850 CCA 61215A40E29 (Newest PN) The key is that the BMW DME SW only has a few AHr options to select that might not match the BMW or Aftermarket Battery you are installing. So selecting 90AHr is close enough to 92AHr. The DME just stores the mileage when you installed your new battery to change the charging profile for a new battery. Older DME SW doesn't have all future BMW Battery AHr size options.

Good info, I'd say though if you are careful you can get really good deals on batteries. A little over a year ago the AGM battery in my 2013 Audi allroad was starting to die over a couple of days (It was dated 08/2012. AGM batteries are really impressive). A matching H8 battery from VW/Audi was > $250. I was on the Audizine forums and found out an H8 Champion battery at my PepBoys was $189 (including core charge). Installed it last January, changed the serial number by 1 letter with VCDS, and returned old battery and payed 171 for a brand new AGM battery. I've had no problems. I'd say do your research and find a good matching spec battery with a discount and you'll win big time. I haven't had any problems with my battery besides the few times I've left my OBDeleven plugged in overnight.
In my research, I found that most car batteries (BMW included) are manufactured by only a handful of suppliers, so I have no doubt they are all among equal quality/ longevity. I just had a hard time finding something locally.
94RAGM will also fit these cars. Should be a little smaller but there’s *usually* an adjustment for the bracket that holds the battery in place. All you have to do is register the battery as a lower Amp Hour rating. Won’t affect anything as long as it’s registered to the vehicle. Great video yet again man! I’ll never know why they make these batteries so damn heavy! 🤣

One thing I suggest to do is to check battery voltage while the motor is on, so you can see at what voltage the alternator is charging the battery. There are two easy ways to do this. One is obviously a multimeter, the other is via the hidden menu. To access the hidden menu turn on the car, you can start the motor as well. Press and Hold the trip reset button on your dash till you see a menu come up. If nothing happens just let go of the button and press and HOLD again. Once you are in the menu keep pressing the reset button till you get to a menu item called Unlock. Now press and hold again. You will then see some 0s come up. Now add the last 5 digits of your vin and press the button until you see that number. In my 228 the total was 16 and in my 440 it was 18. Once you have the correct number selected press and hold the reset button again and you will be taken back to th3 menu screen but now with way more options. Push the button till you see Voltage and hold it. Now the exact voltage will be displayed. For the 2 series drivers you can also get drill down to the Temperature menu and see what your oil temps are as well as coolant. This is useful since the 2 series dash does not show oil temp. Next with the motor running and the voltage menu up, turn on the rear window defroster, and put the ac on max. Look at the voltage and if the battery is starting to go bad it will likely be at 15V. This is important to know because once you register your new battery the voltage with the motor on (alternator running) should not be hitting 15v. Once you install the new battery and register it run this test again. In my case i had to register it twice with the Carly app before it took.
That's interesting, the stock battery in my 340i is 900CCA and manufactured by Banner of Austria (OEM supplier), I'm guessing the slightly higher CCA on mine is because it's a Canadian spec vehicle- although where you are it gets pretty cold too! ❄️

Literally none of the BMW battery replacements talk about the little black vent tube and the white plug you mentioned lol. And it’s already too late as I’ve got rid of my battery and the white plug
I was reading info on battery replacement in my 2016 3X F25 BMW and it said that the power can't be interrupted and to use a tool made to be plug in until the battery is installed so that none of the settings or data will be lost. My 2015 X5 just quietly died today in my garage. It has two batteries in the back. I watched your video and it’s helpful. In my case, should I replace both batteries? I searched and only saw people replacing the bigger ones. Thanks for any advices.
Good video. I just had to figure out the battery access panel puzzle pieces today on our New to me E93. Very helpful for when I have to actually pull the battery...

Another great video! Handles on a battery in that location are essential! If the replacement battery doesn't have handles, consider using tie straps or two old belts!
Hi again, just a note I have talked to a couple mechanics, and they have indicated that its not necessary to register. How can we get the truth on this subject? the thing is that the IBS should track the voltage of any installed battery if it truly is intelligent and no need to tell the IBS or ECU that a new battery has been installed. and how would telling the IBS make it charge differently? some batteries last 4 years and some last over 10 years.
My e90s battery was replaced about a year ago by previous ownner. I see on the car log was not register any previous replacement, and the battery currently registered is a 90ahm agm while the battery in the trunk is a 95ahm AGm. What would you say i have to do now?
Very helpful video Justin. Thanks for the effort. Sometimes the vent plug (that you mention below) is attached to one of the plastic terminal covers found on the new battery.
Hi Justin, That was a great video. I am told that the batteries on most BMW’s sold in India have a 15 volt battery and car’s software is lost w hen you remove the battery. This would mean that the software needs to be re-installed. Would you have a video on the latter?
I like to ad to this if you buying trickle charger and you have AGM battery you must use AGM capable trickle charger. You cannot use regular charger on AGM battery’s
Hi Justin, as always you were rocking with this helpful video. Does this battery work for my 2013 Bmw 328i? otherwise please suggest the correct model. Thank you.
I supposed it depends on what country - I just called BMW for battery price and it was $560AUD. Comparative Century battery on special at an auto store for $360AUD. I'll take the risk that it is not OEM.
Been subscribed for years! Only now I realized your last name was Buice thought it was Bruce. Love your content! I’ve followed since I’ve had an e92, F30 and now I’m on a G30 now. Great videos!
I own a CTEK 7002 US, 7-amp, charger that I have owned for about 10 years. I use it on just about all of my vehicles. Sooo, the question becomes that someone said you should use a minimum 10-amp charger. Your thoughts? OBTW, I really appreciate your instructive videos!
🙋♂️ If you can change the amp hours when you register it to the car. Why not just buy one from the auto parts store? Then pay for the app to change it.🤷🏻♂️ Dealerships screw you over everytime.
I love your channel and nice contents. I thought you can help me to reset the oil and brake pads lights. I have a BMW 530i, 2021. Thanks, J Cesar de Laurentiis
Great video. Well produced and concise. Excellent. Do you know whether you have too register the Auxiliary battery on a BMW 330e? The battery under the hood.
In my experience, non-BMW people will think the placement and the registration of the battery is just BMW being deliberately difficult. My battery lasted a little over 7 years, luckily Autozone had a battery when mine finally died.
Exactly. In my Dodge Avenger you have to take off the front wheel and fender liner to get to it, and everything is rusted from exposure to the elements. I'd say BMW's battery placement is among the best for cleanliness and longevity!
So if you don't have Carly adapter and app , no other way to register the new battery with native built-in options//menu? Are you able to use any of the Bimmerlink or Bimmercode compatible adapters to do this as well? And if so, do you have to pay for the subscription of that app to be able to do this? I myself am a new first time F30 owner and just wondering if this is what the thousands of other BMW owners have to do each time they change batteries. I'm also trying to determine if I should buy this OBD tool or need multiple variations to do coding for mine. Thanks for the info man, I've already learned quite a bit from all your videos..
Hey there is no way to do it through the car’s native menus. Aside from the dealership, any shop that works on European cars will have the capability to do the battery registration, even if you decide to install it yourself. Carly is an annual subscription while Bimmerlink is a one time purchase. Both apps have other diagnostic tools as well. All BMW’s from around 2006 onward need to have the battery registered.
Regarding the CTEK, i see there are different models, mxs 5, 7, 10. Is there any danger to go for the more powerful charger or does the charger know to not overcharge the battery?
My pcv diaphragm went ( has a tear in it ) so white smoke everywhere. Waiting for diaphragm from Ross racing so car is not running for days. Hooked up my black and decker battery charger to red terminal and negative ground under hood and pressed charge. Charged it for about 45 minutes or so. My 340i is a 16 btw….so I will need a battery like you. Assuming the 16 battery is same as 17? I hope you can charge our batteries from under hood terminals! Idk….but I did it. Anyhow how much is that Carly piece you plug into obd?
Might wanna check your info bud. Carly might advertise that they "register" the batteries but loads of people have gone into ISTA afterward to find out that it isn't actually registered at all.
I just confirmed with ProTool, the most recent battery registration was 87,900 km (~54,600 miles) which was the exact mileage when I recorded this. Have you tested this for yourself?
I've read that the car needs to be COMPLETELY off before removing the battery, otherwise undesirable things may happen to the electronics/ software. So, one would want to open the trunk, turn the vehicle off, and then move any proximity keys far from the vehicle prior to removing and replacing the battery. Is this correct, or have I been misinformed?

How can we get the truth on this subject? the thing is that the IBS should track the voltage of any installed battery if it truly is intelligent and no need to tell the IBS or ECU that a new battery has been installed. and how would telling the IBS make it charge differently? some batteries last 4 years and some last over 10 years.
Props on the tools, gotta love Wera's stuff.
They are great! They're like the Leica Camera of tools
2010 e60 144k miles. Still on original battery. ;)
Hey Bruce! Just wondering what pressures you running on your batteries? Many thanks for the videos. 👍🏻
My e90s battery was replaced about a year ago by previous ownner. I see on the car log was not register any previous replacement, and the battery currently registered is a 90ahm agm while the battery in the trunk is a 95ahm AGm. What would you say i have to do now?
Mine lasted a long time but anything over 4 or 5 years I wouldn’t complain
Very helpful video Justin. Thanks for the effort. Sometimes the vent plug (that you mention below) is attached to one of the plastic terminal covers found on the new battery.
Hi Justin, That was a great video. I am told that the batteries on most BMW’s sold in India have a 15 volt battery and car’s software is lost w hen you remove the battery. This would mean that the software needs to be re-installed. Would you have a video on the latter?
I’ll be replacing mine with an Antigravity group 94 weighing 20lbs.
I like to ad to this if you buying trickle charger and you have AGM battery you must use AGM capable trickle charger.
You cannot use regular charger on AGM battery’s
Never waste money at a BMW dealer for a battery. Doesn't matter if the battery capacity is slightly different. You just code it accordingly.
Excellent video man, very clear. Thanks and keep up the great videos.
glad I could help!
Hi Justin, as always you were rocking with this helpful video. Does this battery work for my 2013 Bmw 328i? otherwise please suggest the correct model. Thank you.
Did you ever get an answer?
I supposed it depends on what country - I just called BMW for battery price and it was $560AUD. Comparative Century battery on special at an auto store for $360AUD. I'll take the risk that it is not OEM.
Been subscribed for years! Only now I realized your last name was Buice thought it was Bruce. Love your content! I’ve followed since I’ve had an e92, F30 and now I’m on a G30 now. Great videos!
Thank you! The "U" in my last name is silent so it's pronounced "B-ice" :)
Dealership quoted me nearly $700 to replace and code new battery. I'm having issues with the old battery and didn't recode it when I disconnected it
Fellow Michigan man. Nice video, thanks!
Glad I can help :)
Then pay for the app to change it.🤷🏻♂️
Dealerships screw you over everytime.
dude, nice Seiko turtle
Great video - very professionally done..
Love the videos buddy. Could you share some details on why the battery cables get burnt on the F30?
that's all I needed, So winter, charge. thank you, love your car G 😎😎⚔⚔
I love your channel and nice contents. I thought you can help me to reset the oil and brake pads lights. I have a BMW 530i, 2021.
Thanks,
J Cesar de Laurentiis
do you have to register if you just disconnected negative terminal and put it back on, and not replacing with new battery ?
Hi from Kenya, really looking into a Used 2018 M Sport F30, thanks for the consistency
What should be the lowest voltage and highest voltage. May battery show 12.2 when off and 15 and up when start
Great video. Well produced and concise. Excellent.
Do you know whether you have too register the Auxiliary battery on a BMW 330e? The battery under the hood.
hey have you hear of a weak battery causing chassis malfunction and pedestrian warning malfunction?
Great video. Keep getting errors from Carly unable to register
I'd heard about registering batteries with the car but didn't know why. Now I know.
@@justinbuice Thanks for the quick reply man, much appreciated!
Regarding the CTEK, i see there are different models, mxs 5, 7, 10. Is there any danger to go for the more powerful charger or does the charger know to not overcharge the battery?
how can you enjoy owning a bmw when simple maintenance is this convoluted?
Did u complete a “top-off” charge with the CTEK prior to dropping in the new batt?
No, just installed as-is
Awesome video. Would the same method work for registering non-OEM batteries?
Yes, same process :)
@@justinbuice thanks for confirming
My pcv diaphragm went ( has a tear in it ) so white smoke everywhere. Waiting for diaphragm from Ross racing so car is not running for days. Hooked up my black and decker battery charger to red terminal and negative ground under hood and pressed charge. Charged it for about 45 minutes or so. My 340i is a 16 btw….so I will need a battery like you. Assuming the 16 battery is same as 17? I hope you can charge our batteries from under hood terminals! Idk….but I did it. Anyhow how much is that Carly piece you plug into obd?
car sounds so good man!
Costco sells compatible interstate agm batteries at a good price and US made.
I have never done it that way and it has not been an issue.
