  • This Let’s Play shows a full campaign of the original Sid Meier’s Pirates! on the Commodore64, where it was originally released in 1987. In 13 videos, a complete career, starting in 1560 is shown to the audience on the highest level Swashbuckler. The goal is to maximize gold, titles and land given by the crown. Furthermore we try to find our lost family members before we retire from active services for the european great powers England, Holland, France and Spain.
    The full campaign conists out of 13 videos in total. It was recorded in 2021. The whole game was played on CCS64 emulator, with original sound and without any audio comments while playing the game, so it is a pure experience like you might have had it back in those good old days on your 8-bit machine.

    I remember it would take Fing forever to sail across the map if you were going against the wind, but it was an amazing game.

      if you entered the copyprotection wrong, it was close to impossible. If you did it right, the best thing you could do was cruising constantly with your ship in best windy conditions. But yeah, it took longer going from left to right. By the way Pirates aged remarkably well.

    I played this game a lot back in the 80ies. At a certain moment all of the cities were dutch except one, so I could keep attacking the last one. An endless amount of kidnapped relatives were to be saved.

      Thank you for your comment. Pirates is one of my all time favourites especially when talking about Sandbox and the 8-bit age. I needed a lot of time to become better in that game, but fascination was big enough to become quite good. If you look out for some other classics, just check our playlists. Cheers ! :)

    I am going to make a comment. A game from 1987 is more gripping and have more mechanics than Skull and Bones 37 years later and the irony is that I still play the 2004 remake today. It is truly sad what AAA has become.

      Thank you for your comment. Well Pirates stands for itself and Skulls and Bones has a different approach in my opinion.

      @@LegendaryGamesPodcast I am going to say I love your vids and comentary and what follows is just a personal rant but feel free to read it.
      I actually disagree. Both games are arcade like in nature, both focus on the pirate gameplay in a similar way even thou the 2004 remake had boarding, and the 1987 version is closer to what we got in Skull and Bones. The two games are nearly identical in their gameplay loop except one has multiplayer and a ridiculous price tag.
      If you can mention one thing that is different except the player perspective, I will be impressed. (don't include crafting because that is just there to aid their monetization and grind)
      Love your commentary but as someone that played the 1987 version, 2004 version, Black flag and Scull and Bones it feels nothing like Black flag and more like a bad imitation rip of from Pirates.

    • @LegendaryGamesPodcast
      @LegendaryGamesPodcast  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm not too deep into the Assassins Creed series and Skulls and Bones has just an interesting scenario for me but a wrong approach to deliver as I already knew after some previews years ago. Time is a precious thing, so Skulls and Bones will be ignored by myself - and the price tag (80,-) is ridiculous anyway. If you talk about the scenario and core gameplay I tend to agree that all games you have spoken about have the sane approach. But I think age can not be ignored, so games that are separated by decades can't be compared too well most of the times. Pirates is 2D, it runs on (roughly) EGA graphics and even when the look was top notch in 1987 you must confess that a younger generation sees very basic graphics and a collection of mini games that are stitched together to a so so open world campaign. My look on Pirates is always nostalgic, I still love the game (I like the 2004 version, but the original is better). So my first answer (which was short) aims in this direction, because it depends on your own experience, which is much more intense when you played those titles as a kid.

      I just knew C64 and I've seen the original Pirates! on Amiga when Pirates Gold was already released for MS-Dos (which I found disappointing, back then and even now for 1993). There is a shorter Let's Play of Sascha doing the latest iteration of 2004 for PC and Xbox. I have played this more intensely when the title was released and liked it - but I prefer coming back to the original, because the new one does a lot of thing that annoy me over time. Cutscene sword fights, idiotic sneaking, bad dancing, ZERO AI in land battles - and no use to expand the sandbox universe of Pirates (portugese, indians, bigger fleets to command in a battle or just be a part of, no optional missions, found your own pirate town or whatever, more goods). The clunky additions and the lack of new features to explore made it just fun for a little while.....and I will always return to the original C64. I might give the NES version a try, because I never played it a lot.....but that's it.

    The key to amassing gold was to save just before getting a treasure map piece. If you recognized the shown terrain, you were good. If not, reload and try again.

    • @LegendaryGamesPodcast
      @LegendaryGamesPodcast  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well never did that, but the best thing to receive gold was finding the inca treasure 4 times instead of just one time. Every family member has a piece of the map - if you know where it is not rescuing anyone in that time between you could be granted 400 k instead of 100 k ;)

    Is the beginning segment where he asks you when the treasure fleet will arrive a form of copy protection or is it a way of allowing you to choose your start date?

    • @LegendaryGamesPodcast
      @LegendaryGamesPodcast  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is the copy protection. You had a list in the manual telling you the correct answer - this list was the true voyage route in the game of the treasure fleet or silver train, (it got delayed over time, so it was just useful for the first 1 or 2 years in the game), but with experience, you could use that info, because the order in which the treasure fleet or silver train steered the different cities remained the same. The starting year was chosen with "1560" at the very beginning in the setup menue. Different choices between 1560 and 1680 change diplomacy status, number of cities (so you have different location as targets) as well as prosperity, gold, forts and soldiers. In later years, some ships are replaced (e.g. fast galeon for frigate) so there is some variants regarding the world seed as well.

    • @oxskull1831
      @oxskull1831 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In the many times I played this as a kid I fluke the answer once, didn’t have the manual. It was one of the best runs I had, I captured the silver train.

    • @LegendaryGamesPodcast
      @LegendaryGamesPodcast  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Use the code for copy protection and you might have a better run finding the treasure fleet and silver train (especially in the beginning of the scenario before it delays more and more from original timetable)

    Got Pirates in 04 and were a bit disappointed. The C64 version have more options. Ofcause, the remake blast all earlier versions of the map when it comes to graphics and sound and it's an ok game, but I still prefer (and play) the C64 version. Sneak into town and the ballroom dancing is *so bad*

    • @LegendaryGamesPodcast
      @LegendaryGamesPodcast  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Damn this is the first comment going into this topic and I must admit I totally agree. I played the "new" Pirates in 2004 and I thought after a little while that it couldn't match with the original, despite being fun. There's a let's play of Sascha on our channel, too having a longer run on the Xbox version. I watched shorter parts of the video and it reminded me about all the flaws and disappointments I had. Don't get me wrong it ain't a bad game at all, it is possible to enjoy the remake. But I had such high hopes about a true evolution of the game, which it is clearly not. That is why I am going back to C64 version as well (not Amiga) if I play a campaign in Pirates, still today. First love never dies.

    • @LegendaryGamesPodcast
      @LegendaryGamesPodcast  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Regarding the flaws of 2004, the land battle has close to no AI and takes ages for what it actually delivers - and the sword battles are nicely done, but the absolutely feel like cutscenes after a little while. That's why even these two minigames are better in the original, despite its simplicity and age.

      @@LegendaryGamesPodcast I played the PC version in 04 and yes, it's a good game, but compared to the original C64 version, the C64 is easier, you've got more time to explore the game, and even if Swachbuckler level on the 8 bit is hard, it's not impossible as the PC version

    • @LegendaryGamesPodcast
      @LegendaryGamesPodcast  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@KurtPedersen-tg7jc Playing Pirates 2004 longer, I got some issues about the game itself. Don't get me wrong, I still like the new Pirates, but overall I personally think it is exhausting going through too long land battles and the over and over repeating cutscenes in sword fights. I hated dancing and sneaking was just stupid, as you already mentioned. The level Swashbuckler is doable, but as said, I have no motivation in focussing on this anymore. Overall, the game is good, but this C64 version is the real deal.
