I commented on one of your videos a couple of years back that you inspired me to move to Pittsburgh. Well, I came here in December '21, met the man of my dreams in Feb '22, became a stepmom to his beautiful son, and finally feel like I found my family and my home. None of that would have happened without you. Your whimsical, vulnerable storyteller style is hard to put into words but suffice it to say that your sense of life resonated so strongly with me that it led me straight toward everything I had been searching for. I'm not sure how I'll ever adequately thank you for this phenomenal series that changed my life forever, but I am one of your patrons and hope to invite you to my wedding someday.
Part of what made my family choose Pittsburgh is this channel. Since you've been away, I became a school bus driver and the feeling your video is describing is EXACTLY what I feel whenever I am in Hazelwood in my bus. The people who live here are dedicated to their neighborhood. Always there are people being with people and visible things going on. Care is evident on the ground. Great job Dean!
This video clearly has a different tone compared to the previous 17 episodes. It’s about the people and spreading their word to help improve their community. The message and passion is so real. I don’t even live up there, I’m in Florida. I’ve been saving up money to try and move to Pittsburgh.
I have stayed both in Tampa and Pittsburgh… Pittsburgh is definitely a better city people wise , food , history and even rent affordability wise.. but be ready to spend a portion of your earnings on state and local taxes here , I was making 61k in Tampa and $67k here when I moved but my inhand was more in Tampa thanks to no State and local taxes…also winter is somewhat depressing here TBH.. if you love sunshine stay in Florida.. if you are ok with winters then move…
@@guruprabhu_39915 this is really helpful information to know. Definitely puts the tax cost in perspective with the numbers you provided. I work from home, so I wonder if taxes will affect me as much as people actually work in the city
i love it here, if you hate flat places, which i do, moves here, lots of hills, i lived in a flat valley, i was from sunny california, perfect weather san jose calif, 45 min south of san francisco, we had dry heat and sometimes get up to 102 - 106 degrees, moving here the first year was hard due to humidity but you use to that in FL, but i love it here, when i go back once a year for 2 weeks to visit family in CA i feel claustrophia and cannot wait to leave. I loves hills, valleys, creeks, waterfalls, woods, trees, it is beautiful here, west virgina and ohio are 25 min from pittsburgh airport, they even having skiing in winter, winter the first year i was scared to drive in snow but i got use to it, you need to buy all season tires every 3ish yrs, cover your outside garden water spout and take the hose inside, buy de-icer for car wind shield wipers, salt for steps at front door, but it only snows once in awhile it usually is about 1 - 5 inches and usually melts after a couple days, last few yrs we barely had any snow, global warming ?, in winter if its cold, get up in the morning do your chores, eat, go in the afternoon outdoors to walk or hike when its warmer, its funny when it gets up to 45 degrees, i put on shorts and hoodie sometimes, sometimes it sucks in winter when its 15 degrees during the day and cannot go outside without bundleing up with layers. Believe it or not i see people all the time at walmart with shorts on during winter, but the day passes because the snow is so beautiful and you forget about the cold and usually only last a couple-few days. I usually do stuff ive been too busy to do during the rest of the year, like clean out my basement, attic, garage, cook, bla bla bla, sorry for long post. If i won the lottery, i would probably move a little closer to downtown pittsburgh or buy a small farm, i wouldnt leave. I have been all over the USA and the world and this is my favorite place, downtown is gorgeous, it kinda reminds me of san francisco, but its rivers instead of ocean.
James cole is a warrior for his neighborhood! Community activism and being involved in your own neighborhood is a beginning of a longer path to improvement. Be the Change you want to see. Dean, thank you for bringing your storytelling back. Pittsburgh is lucky to have you tell their story.
Oh man.. we all missed you for 2 years… you are a true gem we have in Pittsburgh and we all were so concerned about your health and well being from past 2 years.. welcome back Dean ❤❤❤ and Edit: I just finished the video and so disappointed to not see you in the video 😢😢😢 I really liked the old format of your video where you explain stuff and then talk with locals .. but awesome content as always , we love you ❤️
I felt the same way at first. But the way I see it is that Dean is trying to show that this message is about other people not him. A selfless act from such a genuine person.
I watched the neighborhoods series in preparation of moving to Pittsburgh. It helped me figure out which part of the city I might want to live in. A new video, the first in a few years, the day before I officially move to Pittsburgh feels like a bit of fate. Glad to see you back!
Wait wait wait wait wait You interviewed Professor Taulton! God dang She was my environmental justice prof at Duquesne, one of if not the best professor I had while I was there
I had the idea to move myself into Hazelwood 4 months ago. I live by myself and my 2 pit bulls. I’m not all that sure what pulled my mind into picking Hazelwood but as of the time still being I love my choice. There isn’t much to really do here around or aside 2 Ave. However, that is why I enjoy being in my house so much. The people here are nice and friendly. When I go for a walk I say hello to everyone and I get gracious greetings in return. I’m not necessarily part of any of the families that have lived here for years. But I feel like, “family is who you say it is.” And the people that I live around, treat me as so. I’ve also joined the Hazelwood Initiative so I can be sure that I’m going to the community meetings and up date on any “happenings” around my new community! Thank you Hazelwood ❤ 💁🏽♀️🐕🐕☮️
OK. Now that I've actually WATCHED the video, I can say that I am more glad you are back than ever! You shine light and give us insight into communities, not just generic reviews of neighborhoods. After watching your videos, I feel like I know and understand these communities and could feel at home if I ever visited them. You have an incredible gift and I'm glad you are sharing it with us. You got me wanting to move to Pittsburgh LOL! 🙂
Dean: Terrific job on this Hazelwood documentary. I learned so much. Your channel is among my favorites on TH-cam and you are among my favorite documentary film-makers. I was so sad during your long absence and am thrilled that you are back! Pittsburgh is indebted to you, although you might single-handedly be to blame for an influx of new residents coming from around the world!
Man… I am so happy to see you’re back. I left Pittsburgh a decade ago to pursue a dream and your neighborhood series was my light for homesickness during COVID. I am glad you’re doing well and so excited to be proud and miss Pittsburgh once again
Your work on this project is phenomenal, not only from a technical level, but a storytelling level as well. So happy to see you were able to return to this series.
Wow! Dean Bog is back and at it again. The man has a super high level of skill in producing excellent documentaries. However, I would say this is exceeded by his love for people of Pittsburgh . Pittsburgh is very fortunate to have him in the community.
By far Dean's most powerful video yet. Tears were welling in my eyes at the end. Shout out to everyone in this video working to improve the lives of our youths. Ps.. I live in Greenfield, but I love hitting up Hazelwood Cafe and La Gourmandine.
Dean Bog is back! Another neighborhoods video, too. My man! A lot of my favorite TH-camrs posted today, but when I got home from work, and saw you posted, it was the first video I watched. Thank you so much, man, from the bottom of my heart.
I'm so EXCITED that you're back!!! I love how this one really lets the residents shine. Just beautiful editing. I really can't wait to be able to move to Pittsburgh.
Well done, Dean. This is a huge step forward for your style. Your videos have always been shot and edited well, and you took a risk by going in a new direction with less narration, looser structure, and more interviews. You should be proud. Keep up the great work. I look forward to your next video.
So excited about this video that I am savoring every minute. I am a student in Oakland, and I wish so badly to be helpful in getting Hazlelwood what its people and community rightfully deserve. Thank you Dean for another wonderful film
I've only just started watching this video, but I already know that I owe you a HUGE thanks and CONGRATULATIONS on your return, I'm so very glad to see your Neighborhood episodes again, I feel like the world needs more of your perspective right now .... thank you, Dean Bog!
If there is one group of people in the world I had to put my money on to take their fate into their own hands and make something beautiful, it’s Pittsburghers all day baby. Coming from a forgotten place on the Mon myself (McKeesport), it fills me with joy and hope to see Hazelwood rise. Like, to all those big city developers seeing PGH as a hotspot, we are happy to have you as our neighbor, but this is our neighborhood, and Yinzers have been burned way worse (for way longer) by more powerful men than some lil realtor with a portfolio. You aint gettin anything past us. You aint gettin an inch. Feel so lucky and blessed these are my kinfolk. 🖤 Thank you for this beautiful work. It’s truly befitting of us. You capture us as we are.
Amazing piece that really captures the humanity of an area of the city. I've passed through Hazelwood and only saw the decay, I didn't see the life and community teeming beneath the veneer
Yaoooo our dog has returned! You were putting it top tier docs before it was a standard on here. I hope you begin uploading the neighborhood series again - have always enjoyed the hell out them.
This was an awesome surprise! Although I live in the burbs (Greensburg), your videos on PGH are fascinating to me. The way you capture the soul and positive aspects of the communities is really something we all need nowadays. Excited for (hopefully) more!
What a lovely surprise! I found your channel in 2019 when I first moved to Pittsburgh and have been waiting for this video since then!!! Absolutely moving, I wanted to give James a hug through the screen. Welcome back, much love to you and Hazelwood
Wish there was more of you in the video besides your voice at the end, but your filming and editing are off the charts amazing, as always, and I like the more formal interview style :) So happy to see you back~!
thank you so much for a wonderful depiction of my hometown. I grew up there in those times when Hazelwood got its bad reputation, but the sense of family was always there. i grew up on the street with the footbridge(up above side), in one of the homes that has since been torn down. I am truly glad to see the progress being made there, but it cannot be made at the expense of the tight-knit community that it is comprised of, and who is the heart and soul of that community.
The wait is over so happy to see you back men cheers brother I'm a fellow Pittsburgh TH-camr starting my traveling career here trip to the Philippines later this year planning blog everyday
