Born and raised in Pittsburgh. I’ve been living in Japan now for almost 6 years. I moved out here intentionally but because of certain aspects of my new life I’m not sure when or if I’ll ever be able to return home. These videos and your upbeat attitude specifically soothe my soul and provide solace when I’m feeling homesick. Thank you, Dean.
Dean, a map with your intro would be very useful for future episodes. I know where Mt. Washington is, but it’s really nice to see where you are exploring on a map. Love the series! B
I'd love you to do a video on the Brookline neighborhood. I grew up there, in a house at the end of Chrysler St, right near what is now the entrance to Our Lady of Loreto school and church. (That was not there for my first 7 years - it was just woods.) I played in those woods all the time, and walked through them to Moore field. My family moved away in 1964 when I was 10 years old. I'd love to see what the neighborhood looks like now.
Just discovered your channel, & have been happily binge watching for the last several hours. I've had a love affair with Pittsburgh almost all my life (I'm 55!), but I've never been fortunate enough to live there for any length of time. I'm from a small town about 130 miles northeast of there, & I visited alot as a kid. My late husband & I did live there temporarily for about a year in the early 2000's,, when my husband was being treated for leukemia at West Penn hospital. It was a difficult year, but also a great one, due to being in Pittsburgh. My husband was in the hospital most of that year, but once he was stable, he insisted that I get out & see as much of the city as I could. I didn't want to leave him at the hospital, but afterward, I was really so glad he made me go. My only regret is that once he was well, we packed up & went back home. I've been trying to get back to Pittsburgh ever since! Now, going for occasional visits is more pain than pleasure for me. Health, kids, & financial issues got in the way of us making a permanent move there, but he passed away several months ago, so now my Pittsburgh dream is back in full force. Trying to apartment hunt long distance is tough though, & the neighborhoods that were affordable back in 2005/2006 are much more expensive now. Plus, some of those places have lost the vibe I liked due to over-gentrification. I hope to make it work out soon though, as I have to travel to see my doctor at the Hillman Cancer Center pretty often. Thank you for making these great videos of The 'Burgh!!
OMG these little films of yours are artistic treasures. I have never been to Pittsburgh, and now I feel so connected to the place. Cannot wait to visit early this spring. Thank you for these beautiful, poignant glimpses in to this world.
I'm from Chicago and Pittsburg has never been on my radar of places to go. Recently a friend just moved there and another spent the night there traveling from NYC to Chicago. These videos are amazing and once this pandemic is over I think I'll take a long weekend and check the city out! Such a great find, keep up the amazing work and wow your future is so bright you should be doing all over the country my friend. My favorite is the one on downtown!
I lived there in the early 90's. Rode the incline every day. I went to A.I.P. , I loved living there on Mt. Washington. Loved the view of the city out my front window at 122 Baily Ave. I have come back to visit Pittsburgh many times over the years. I fell in love with Pittsburgh and Mt. Washington and the people. I miss them days. The view of the city on light up night is just fantastic, from Grandview Ave. Same with 4th of July.

Wow. I found your channel last night and I can't stop watching. Thanks for taking your viewers with you, gives me a feeling of being home. There's no where in the world like Pittsburgh ❤
Hey I'm not sure how to contact you other than this. So hear goes! I would love for you to do a story on McKeesport. My grandfather and great grandfather were both on the cover of "U.S. Steel" magazine back in the day when McKeesport was booming with the steel industry. My Nana has lived on Jenny Lynn St. for over eighty years, only moving a few houses up the hill when her father built a house up the street as a wedding present to her and my grandpap. She was the bookkeeper/secretary for u.s. steal, leaving school to work. My grandparents both grew up in that neighborhood, went to school together, worked together, and stayed together through his deployment in WWII as a Navy Seal. They got married when he returned and raised three kids on that street in that neighborhood. My grandpa isn't around anymore, but my Nana is still alive and would love to be interviewed about the town's history. She lived there for her whole life until recently having to move closer to us in the South Hills for home care, and has plenty to say about it's history. My whole family is from there and recalls when it was a great place to live. I also went to George Washington school in McKeesport for Grade School, but thankfully moved before it started getting too bad I guess. But I loved it there and still miss the candy shop and great sled riding down the streets! I'll take the risk putting my email here in hopes to hear back from you. I think it's worth the risk. Thanks man. Liked your video, I've already been subscribed. vincent8814@gmail.com

Just discovered your videos yesterday and spent last night watching most of your neighborhood series. As a fairly new resident, it’s awesome to see the nooks and crannies of all the areas. I’m obsessed!
Dean, please do an episode on Brentwood. I know it is a suburb of Pittsburgh but it has a great story with it. Nice work and good fortune in the new year.
This is so good! There’s something to be said about the small factory towns surrounding Pittsburgh, Jeannette is an old glass town lots of really cool abdandoned factories and history; the local officials are making plans to get rid of them. Probably best for everyone but still very cool nonetheless. Keep up the awesome stuff 😊
I remember a part of pittsburgh that had some of the worst streets and steepes hills to ride a bike up, Troy Hill, on of these hills was paved, but it was the most pot holed street I had ever seen, I was a good cyclist at the time, though I was riding a heavy mountain bike, but I could only get half way up it, at the time I could go all the way up East Sycamore to Mt. Washington. Maybe you would find it interesting... I love your videos, and hope to make some that are even a fraction as good, you are inspiring man!!
First off, your production style is amazing. The beginning shots that set the mood, the music, your iconic helmet and fun gags like the snowman talking, your face being mirrored, etc. These documentary style videos with real people hit such a deep part of the soul and make you feel this connection you never would without being there yourself. Second, you give me a very Jake from VSauce vibe (both in voice and humour) but most importantly in the information you provide. Describing little things like the metal supports on houses, the many shots that flow together and feel like a catalogue of this beautiful city you live in. Definitely a channel I'll be recommending and following well into the future, take care!
I’ve really been enjoying your videos. You approach each neighborhood with such respect and openness. As a life long Pittsburgher it’s a bit jarring but amazing to see the city from the eyes of a person not born here. It makes me see a place that is so familiar in a different way. Pittsburgh has changed so much in my lifetime I can imagine that it’d be unrecognizable. I’ve always felt that our geography of the city molded its residents’ personalities in a quite literal way. Both are hard to get familiar with, but familial and welcoming once you get to know us. It’s got a history of hardworking, tough people. I’m so glad you can see the beauty here.
My Washington is my home town & no matter where I go, I run into one of my many family members, even on TH-cam!! Uncle Bernie did a great job in this video! Thank you for your amazing work!
I used to visit Pittsburgh just for Anthrocon in July, but the charm of the city, its amazing views, and its topography make me want to take more time to explore the rest of the city after the convention is over. Your videos are amazing and help capture that unique feeling I love about visiting. Thank you for making them.
As I mentioned on the first video I watched of yours I absolutely loved Pittsburgh. We walked everywhere including to the incline and around Mount Washington. Your video about The Run inspired me to go take walk around Pueblo, CO The Grove Neighborhood. Pueblo, CO is the second leading producer of steel behind you guessed it Pittsburgh. Greetings from Pueblo, CO GO BRONCOS :)
I live here on the Mount! Never knew about Grandview Park, it doesn’t even show up on Google Maps. Will be checking that out soon, thanks for repping our neighborhood and our city so well as always!!
its worth a look, but there is a small quiet park right off one of the bike trails right before Grandview too. It's tucked away on a back street off Boggs Ave. If you have dogs it's a nice respite.
Great video. I really miss the friendly people and the sense of community there. Rented there for 3 years and have lived in 7 different areas in the Pittsburgh area within my 35 years. I hope to maybe buy a house there one day. Most of the other neighborhoods I lived in were not horrible but none of those places compare to the Mount!
There's a lot to say about Mt. Washington, growin up in Northside and going to school @ NA... I've seen a lot of the burgh. Great vid my dude. I see how much work you've put in by watching this one, I've been around the "mount" for 8 years now. Not all good, not all bad, you got some support from me, hope to see more.
I lived in Mt Washington 8+ yrs ago. It was funky, cool people, none of that drug crap. Great library! Good bars, and from what I remember, of the homeowners; amazing people! Thanks Dean! Stellar production, as always
Spent every summer growing up in the Burgh with my grandparents I went to Dilworth park every day and would talk to MR. Sharky then head to my Unc's house on Grace St. great times I miss it so much

Keep up the good work!! I love your genuine sincerity in covering these very special neighborhoods. I see you accomplishing your goals regarding film.
A friend sent me this series a few days ago and I’ve binged through all of them in less than a week. Dean, absolutely fantastic job with this series! The production is absolutely off the charts! Also gives me a chance to notice areas of the city I never though of exploring. Makes me want to just drive around for a day now. If you ever want to go slightly outside the city limits, you should come out to South Park or do an updated North Park/South Park episode. There’s plenty of space to explore here and a ton of history to learn about as well!
Thanks for doing my old neighborhood, Dean. And, yes... the hill at Grandview Park is primo sledding. I can't count the number of times many decades ago that I nearly killed myself in the tangled weeds that ironically saved me from actually plunging to my death in South Side below.
The guy that mentioned that air conditioners killed neighborhood camaraderie has a good point. There was a time when people sat on their porches every night and talked with their neighbors. I really miss that…my wife and I are trying to bring it back in our neighborhood.
Heart be still. I moved away from Pittsburgh 3 years ago but lived on the Mount for over a decade. Proposed to my wife on the overlook. So many memories. Grandview Park is an excellent spot for July Fourth btw!
Glad to see u getting more recognition for these lately. I've always felt our city was underrated and ur bringing to light some of what we have to offer in a fresh way, much love.
You are quite amazing. Can't wait to see Bellevue Borough and the historic Lincoln Curve and lately some cool little shops opened up there. I'd like to see them interview.
Hey Dean... watched the Mt Washington and Mt. Oliver... some of my old neighborhoods !!! Great job... I know eventually you gonna get all the the neighborhoods ... but if you ever want to branch off and do some smaller shorter clips of hidden gems or some of the things that use to go down in the neighborhoods ... like old bike trails or make shift “dog parks” I got a few places off the beaten path that would be cool to get the story out and maybe influence people to bring it back etc
Keep it up man! Love the videos! I’m from Erie Pa. have always loved the city of Pittsburgh. I now have a 1 year old and a 4 year old. Going to be doing a lot of touring Pittsburgh this summer with them. Maybe and hopefully we will run into you!!!! Happy new year!
@@winternight2038 yes! That's my precious cat Mama that passed away last May. She was a stray and I took her in about 8 or 9 years ago. But she always had these underlying health issues the vets couldnt figure out. I miss her a lot. Thanks for asking. I like to talk about her.❤
Another thing I wanted to say, your last name kinda tripped me out and made me look at your videos, because I lived for a long time on Boggs Avenue, though the place is no longer there, 137 Boggs Ave, and worked at Jimmies Downtown Pizza on Smithfield... Boy those were tough times, 4 dollars an hour, and not even a bicycle! And the Smithfield Bridge walkway had holes in it big enough to fall through! 1991

This is fantastic. There is nobody out there who could have known that Charlize Theron calls herself Dean Bog and is a brilliant documentarian. In my opinion, this alias obviously enables her to make remarkable, insightful, and unique vignettes about Pittsburgh. I had no idea that this was her thing. Genius! This persona will take them places much more rewarding and interesting than the fetid pools of Hollywood mediocrity she has been forced to wade through up until this time. Never stop this. You are talented and inspiring! Never go back to Hollywood or South Africa. Stay in Pittsburgh and keep being tremendous!!!!!!! This is the best travel series on the internet or PBS or anywhere.
The best restaurant I've ever eaten at was on top of Mt. Washington. My dad took us there in the early 90s and it was a 5 star restaurant. I still remember we had a window table. We had some really good wine too!!
Love your vids - you’re amazing at filming!!! You should think about making a video on STATION SQUARE!!! (Also not sure if u included this in downtown but there are canoes by the baseball field you can rent!!!)
Dean I live in Miami Florida and I have always loved Pittsburgh. Your video profiles of the neighborhoods has me so wanting to move back! You are showcasing the very best and your film editing and how you break it down is awesome. Ken Burns better watch out. There is a new kid on the block and he is from a Pittsburgh. its worth a look, but there is a small quiet park right off one of the bike trails right before Grandview too. It's tucked away on a back street off Boggs Ave. If you have dogs it's a nice respite.

This is one of my favorite cities. You do all of us yinzers proud!!!
This is fantastic! When I first moved into the city, I started out on Mt. Washington and you hit so much.
Gonna binge your channel this weekend!! It’s up to us to keep our city clean!
Spent every summer growing up in the Burgh with my grandparents I went to Dilworth park every day and would talk to MR. Sharky then head to my Unc's house on Grace St. great times I miss it so much
Dean bog at 13:35 that chunk of land was once upon a time Vinecliff street.
Great editing!
Glad you started patreon. I'm so confused why you're not monetized. But, great job.
I was just wondering if it might be the music
@@leisure057blank3 true.. which sucks because I think his editing and soundtrack choices are so great. His patreon is already halfway to his goal! So I'm pretty pumped for him.
@@anghellbeth the music is perfect.
Dean, you are doing an outstanding job. While I no longer live in Pittsburgh, PA (I am now a Texas girl -- Houston to be exact), my love will always be Pittsburgh where I was born, raised & educated. Keep up the good work!! I love your genuine sincerity in covering these very special neighborhoods. I see you accomplishing your goals regarding film.
Production level 1000
Weeds do haveapurpose
The guy that mentioned that air conditioners killed neighborhood camaraderie has a good point. There was a time when people sat on their porches every night and talked with their neighbors. I really miss that…my wife and I are trying to bring it back in our neighborhood.
I hope all is well Dean!
I miss Pittsburgh often and your videos ease the yearn... hope to see you soon
Hope you have plans to do Aspinwall! If so, make sure you head up Center Ave to see Upper A-wall (and Fireman's Park for the view) :D
These videos are very well done. You deserve to be on television dude.
One of my favorite spots for hanging with friends. Every time we go downtown we head up the mountain just for the view
Hey Dean... watched the Mt Washington and Mt. Oliver... some of my old neighborhoods !!!
Happy new year!
these videos really deserve to be getting more views. really good job here stud.
Do one on the Strip District!
Love it! I lived on Oneida street and LaClede street back in the 70’s and 80’s. Thank for this episode.
I just love your channel Dean 💙do live streams people will donate 😆
I would buy merch. 🤷♀️❤👍🏻
@@anghellbeth yes for sure ! especially a warm sweatshirt ,lolol very cold here in Pittsburgh !
@@anghellbeth is that your cat in the pic?I love my kitty's ,gizmo and booties 🐈🐱
@@winternight2038 yes! That's my precious cat Mama that passed away last May. She was a stray and I took her in about 8 or 9 years ago. She was pregnant with 6 (plus she brought 3, 10-week old babies to my front door) kittens and very sick. So I took her in* and got her healthy. Got the babies healthy and fostered them. But she always had these underlying health issues the vets couldnt figure out. I miss her a lot. Thanks for asking. I like to talk about her.❤
Going around some of the areas live is a great idea!
My one daughter goes to Pitt, and the other goes to Chatham.... I find these so interesting because they think they want to live in PGH after they graduate.
Hell yeah, Dean! Keep going.
P.s. consider adding a $3 option to patreon!
😂
The best restaurant I've ever eaten at was on top of Mt. Washington. My dad took us there in the early 90s and it was a 5 star restaurant. I still remember we had a window table. We had some really good wine too!!
Fantastic man! Seriously!! Thanks again.
Love your vids - you’re amazing at filming!!! You should think about making a video on STATION SQUARE!!! (Also not sure if u included this in downtown but there are canoes by the baseball field you can rent!!!)
Yo, I just moved to pittsburgh this past year and fell in love with the history and this is amazing! Def passing this around
Dean
I live in Miami Florida and I have always loved Pittsburgh. Your video profiles of the neighborhoods has me so wanting to move back! You are showcasing the very best and your film editing and how you break it down is awesome. Ken Burns better watch out. There is a new kid on the block and he is from a Pittsburgh. Pirmanti Brothers get ready to add another picture to your mural.
love the series bro. im born and raised from pittsburgh--moving back this year---WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS MAKE ME MORE EXCITED!
Good shit Mr. Bog!!! Please keep’em coming brother.
Love everything Dean has ever made
just found your channel. ex pat here. these are wonderful
I really enjoy watching your videos, know this is really late but it was just suggested to me. Hope your ankle heals ive been there in time you just learn to deal with it (& the limp) please, keep up the good work. I've lived in the Pittsburgh area my whole life but downtown kinda scares me, thanks for taking me to places i would probably never go. 👏
Did you do squirrel 🐿 hill yet? If not, please do it on the Chinese New Year parade! Murray ave foods! 😎😎😎
I live about hr away from the burgh but I do some work in the burgh. It’s pretty cool to see these type of videos!
Beautiful work, again!
Love your Cinematography style and point of view.
If you come to shadyside or squirrel hill I Definitely recommend exploring Chatham University it is such a beautiful campus with historic buildings all around. If you do end up here at Chatham Id love to show you around as well!
Keep it up dean !!! Killing it man
So many great memories. Thanks for such a great video!
Dean you're a genius. I loved how loaded with content this video was. It was like a new year's treat! I'm so stoked for the Patreon. You inspire me and, at this point, genuinely countless others.
Simply beautiful.
youre doing my dream job, i wish i could go around pittsburgh and create cinematography as nice as this, who knows, we might meet some day, keep doing you :)
And then there's the Mount Washington transit tunnel I took the streetcar through with its flashing blue electric discharges on the overhead pickup line.
