I thought about that too but i think he’s saying that normally there are several people who own it but only 1 or 2 who actually live on the property. Which isn’t rent free but you have to consider whos paying the property taxes.

the appraisers are definitely colluding with investors - happened to me. the fact that the land was full of mature trees. you already know - that made that land worth immeasurably more, heritage and legacy aside.

They should have gotten in touch with a family members and told them what they planned on doing and gave the family members a chance to buy their portion of the land. Not an outsider.

Very important for African-American families to buy out those heirs that no longer want to own their share of the land and put it under a legal trust to protect it from being sold into the hands of those that do not have an interest in preserving a legacy for future generations. Land still has significant value in the US.

Living rent free? The whole point of passing down land to our children is so They will always have somewhere to live, never have to worry about rent, so they don't have to struggle the way I did.

@@benboy123456 In California at least, the property tax rate stays the same as the year you bought the property. So if you bought a house twenty years ago, you pay the tax rate of twenty years ago. But I know they can be excessive in other states.

the sellers were probably not told that only 20% sale triggered ownership change. As a businessperson in ca and nv there much stricter rules regarding transfer of undivided ownership, especially with regard to disclosure to all parties. because of their wealth whites are typically offered favorable financing options when they need cash for all sorts of morally upstanding things like go to vegas or gamble elsewhere. They are also financially astute enough to over pay for a crappy car and get ripped of by financial advisors

They need to ensure that anyone wanting to sell their own portion of land MUST give first refusal to the other shareholders. They shouldn’t be allowed to offer outsiders first dibs! This is unconscionable!

This is a prime example of how uneducated we are about what we have in our possession! Over 400 acres of land, multiple heirs and no one has a clue as to how the laws work in favor of someone coming along and asking who wants to sell their portion of the land. If no one would have sold, he couldn't have done a thing! If the heirs would have educated themselves, no one would have sold their portion. In our culture though...this doesn't apply to all.....we are more concerned with how much money we can make regardless of the consequences and we know nothing about investments and assets! If you ask the average black person if that 50k car they're driving is an asset, investment or a liability, most would say an asset/investment! When something depreciates, its a liability and is only an asset if you own it and it at least maintains its value. An investment is something that appreciates in value as time progresses i.e. a home or land. Without education and knowledge, we will never understand how to make real progress financially!

It’s not just a black thing. Property rights are stolen from all sorts of people all the time. Some states have very little support for private property rights, almost to the point you can’t ever know you own something for real. Texas is a notable exception. The protect your right to own.

What If the Race Roles Were Reversed???
Greetings to all in the love and mercies of God the Father and Jesus Christ our Hope of Eternal Life.
If history were reversed, and everything that those labeled "black" went through in the United States was switched around and it never happened, but they instead were the ones who were oppressing those who are labeled "white," then it should be understandable that those labeled white (400 years later) would be crying against "black" privilege, police brutality, false imprisonment, racial segregation, unfair wages, and the works. And if I was the color of one of those who were apart of the oppressors, I could do nothing but keep my mouth shut, cry out to God for forgiveness, and try to make a difference (a better difference) and be different than my ancestors were.
No, it would not be my place to try to erase the memory of what has already happened or to accuse the victim. It would be my place to despise the evil actions of my evil ancestors and to apologize to the race of people whom they offended, and to never open my mouth in defense of the wicked actions (the wicked actions of my ancestors) nor of present-day racists walking in the same skin color of my evil ancestors.
But history is not reversed and what has happened has happened, and what is happening is happening. So I humbly encourage you that if you are a descendant of evil ancestors or you are in the race of those who are still practicing racism, to behave yourself accordingly.

What is Racism Really?
Racism is just one of the many categories that God has blessed me and sent me to speak to and concerning throughout my ministry, and by His grace, I have been addressing the issue for many years. Racism is simply a nicer term for what amounts to "hatred," which is simply murder. Yes, like abortion is a nicer term for baby murder, racism is a nicer term for "People hating you or thinking lesser of you because of the way God made you." And as I stated before, by the grace of God and to His glory, when people hate you because of the way God made you, that person's problem is really with God, it's not with you because you had nothing to do with the way God made you, and there's nothing wrong with the way God made you, it's just that they have been blinded by the devil and cannot appreciate all of the creativity of the Blessed Lord.
In my blessed new book to come (God willing), entitled, "The Beauty of Colors: Appreciating the Creativity of the Creator," you'll learn (God permitting) how like in a beautiful bouquet of flowers, you can see various colors in that same bouquet, and it would be ridiculous for one flower to say to another flower "I don't want you in the bouquet because of your color" because all of the flowers together make the bouquet beautiful, it is also quite ridiculous for one group of people in the human race to say to another group of people in the human race, "I don't like you because of your color" because all the colors together is a part of the design of the Creator in beautifying the human race.
Thus, it's important to understand that it is the sin nature of humans (because of the fall of mankind) which has caused humans to operate in ways that are out of order. It's like a malfunction that happens in a mechanical object like a robot: It starts going crazy and it starts tearing up things (just doing things that it was not designed to do). That's how racism is in humans because humans are out of sync with God, and when you're out of sync with God because of your sin nature, you will behave in Ridiculous Ways contrary to the design of the Creator.
That's why it's important that you become born of the Spirit of God and submit your life and your heart to Jesus Christ, so that you can behave in ways which are in-sync with God's character. God doesn't hate the colors of His own beautiful creation that He created. So you are out of sync with God's character when you're walking in the sin of hatred manifested in racism. Remember:
Racism = Hatred = Murder ⤵️

Search Your Heart search and search your mind, and be honest with yourself: Ask God now to deliver you from racism (if you're walking in that sin) and from all of your sins. Remember, God loves you. Jesus Christ died for you and rose again, and He's coming back again. Now is the time to surrender your life to Christ, so that you can be ready when the blessed Lord returns. Repent of your sins and be baptized in His Name as God commands, and ask God for the gift of the blessed Holy Spirit so that you can be born again and live your life in-sync with God. Amen.

This is really sad. The government tried to take my land before. My lawyer told me putting it in the form of a family trust was the correct way to protect it forever.

My great great grand father is a Native Indian from the tribes of the Choctaw, He had his 4050 acres thousand of years before the European came, The Sheriff and police stole 4000 acres of land from my grand father, and sold it to a European man from Sweden, and only left My great great grand father 50 acres and tax the hell out of him, My grand father were paying 10 times more taxes on 50 acres that the European man with 4000 acres

Land disputes will bring out the ugliness among others, whether it's yourself, relatives, Gov't officials, or whomever you perceive as the one targeting your designated land area or acre you wish to claim ... Here where I reside in AZ, there's quite a waiting list once applying for home site lease upon tribal council or submitting the requirements, within the boundaries of the Navajo reservation along the AZ/NM/UT state line borders... sounds crazy but it is what it is ... never helps when there's certain favoritism or nepotism among council members. A wise man once told me anything with land dispute/conflict will claim a life

There is no clear Will that defines where the assets go so it leaves the door open for new buyers to come get the land for penny’s on the dollar

This happened to my family. They were tobacco farmers in Georgia. Then they sold half the damn property when one member was struggling. It's a shame the laws weren't made for us.

You know that it is good journalism when the comment section is heated. Why is it hard for the majority to see right when it comes to black? Wow!! I’m horrified and deeply saddened. My uncle did this to his siblings and sold our family farm & land for over 2 million. He was penniless 2 years later. It all went to partying. It’s heartbreaking to see so many family homes snatched for pennies & the remaining families broke & homeless. Where’s the justice?

The point is that: in America land ownership was always a way to make real money and have that for future generations. This way of making money was taken away from many black people specifically. Racism DID play a huge part. They did it on purpose. You can't consistently tell black people to pull yourselves up by your bootstraps but keep taking their boots. Let's be clear on this. Unfortunately, between racism and many blacks just not being educated - it caused a lot of people to lose their land and homes. The exact same thing happened in my family. We lost land that had been in our family for about 200 years because my father's cousins just weren't business savvy. My father is an educated city person and his cousins were uneducated country people and they just thought my dad was arrogant. They didn't want to listen to anything he said and was seduced by a white family who said they could give them some money for the land. They didn't understand the value of owning the land. So the land was sold off to a white family. My father couldn't do anything about it - they overruled him. That's how it goes a lot of times.

You get people in my country south Africa who are promising to give land back to black people as a way to bring people out of poverty and the create more equality between white farm owners and the rest of the country. But to do that, they have amended the right to private property and the anc can now expropriate land and assets that are "not being utilized". All this is a big stunt to appease the voters and to prevent an ethnonationalist communist party the eff from asking power, who threatens to kill all the white farmers and take their land by force and whose leader has been implicated in the springing of criminals from prison who go and attack farms, usually ending in the victims being raped and murdered. Land issues are complicated, but certain parties take advantage of these issues to further their own ends. Like the anc, they've let the rural areas fall so far off the map in south frica in terms of education, and now they want to end up giving people land even if they have no experience in large scale commercial farming. And because they haven't kept up to date, they could end up exhausting the soil of its resources. The only real solution then would be to take the land back and sell it off to multinationals or China. The eff, they'll just end giving it up to party members and violently dispel anyone who disagrees with them. Keep in mind, they hate the khoisan tribes in western cape because they don't share their idea of turning Africa into a pan african single nation like the EU.
That grandmother broke my heart I had no idea this was happening.
Something similar happened to my families land. Happened without me understanding what was going on. I hope my Granddads payout was good enough that he wrecked all his kids and nieces and nephews generational wealth. All it takes is one person not on code to ruin it for all of us.
This is how we help black America. Educate our brothers and sisters. Band together, don’t have knee jerk reactions to the media. Use your knowledge to aid your community.
Everyone needs to be educated on this, it ain't hard to use what they do to blacks and do the same to everyone else, Latinos, Whites, and Asians. The more people who know this stuff the better. Those with money can use their power over those who don't and force the sale of land for thousands of acres in the course of a simple record search. And those under Heirs property need to get in contact with these relatives who don't live on the land and get them to sign away their right to it as to consolidate the land to those who live there. Those who live on the land should be the only ones to make decisions. This is why Noble families gave land to a single heir, cause dividing it up left them weaker overall.

You probably need to go to court to see how you can take full possession and get your portion out of heirs possession and own it.
I have a pretty special case myself here in Texas both on my mother and father side we have personal family graves all throughout the central Texas area east of San Antonio but either grave sites are owned by either family we have to ask permission to tend to the personal grave sight

Sadly the guy is exploiting a system that leaves future descendants of the land at a disadvantage, it's not right, and yet by the law, it is fair. This happened in my family. For decades, the older people in the family refused to sell, but once they died off, a greedy family member got a lawyer and negotiated a lump sum of money for herself at the cost of everyone else. I wish that the older generation of my family had stress how important it was to hold on to that land, but maybe they didn't understand the laws either. Another one of my family member told me that although each of the people that owned a piece of the land got what equates to a pittance, that land was used to build a highway and if they would have waited, there would have been millions.

We bought land for $500.00 to $600.00 per acre in 1989-1990. It was the asking price, and it stayed for sale a long time before we bought it. A year or two before the pandemic land was selling for $1000.00 per acre in very rural Mississippi.

Recently, the City/County of Los Angeles recently gave the property back that was basically stolen from a lovely Black couple. It was prime restate along the Pacific Ocean with millions of dollars. The family purchased it for $1200 around 1912, and they recently acknowledged that they took the land, and it was finally given back to family members. Therefore, I hope they fight for the land our ancestors worked EXTREMELY hard for.
When Mrs. Stanley shared her story I broke down and cried so hard. This is the B.S that is wrong with the world. I’m so sorry that her family has gone through this!

If the part of the Lewis family that is living on the property was aware of their situation they might have been able to buy the rest of the shares from their relatives and avoid all of this. The morally grey part is that the investor is avoiding talking to the residents and instead went to people that didn't really care for the land nor their distant relatives.

Great job VICE News... this is good reporting. I am an heir to my paternal great-grandfather's land in Louisiana which is vulnerable to being sold as explained in this video. It is still in my great-grandfather's name although he had 10 or 11 children and died before I was even born. Needless to say, there are hundreds of heirs now even though my grandfather was the only one out of his siblings to build his home and raise his family on the land and no one else has ever lived on the land my grandparents died. Somehow, no taxes are charged so none are paid and the property has just sat overgrown for many years now. Many of us heirs don't even live in Louisiana. I've often wondered how I or someone else could go about buying out the other heirs... this video helps explain that. I don't know if I'd ever want to buy it because it is so rural and too far from the nearest interstate but it has some sentimental value.
Don't let developers have your family land, period. Even if it just sits and wildlife uses it for their homes; it's better than letting developers have it for nothing......

Heirs property in the South alone is estimated to be valued at $28B. Seems like a great opportunity for a non-profit to work with the heirs owners to restructure the deeds to reduce or eliminate these forced sales. Next step will be to assist these owners in putting some of this property into use (agriculture, timber, residential development, etc) to generate additional wealth for the owners.
It feels like a family issue or dispute. And some property laws need to be changed so people dont get uprooted from their homes. Its very sad what happened to these people.

This is very powerful knowledge. My father taught me of the importance of having a Will. Then I learned about having a Trust for my assets. I teach my grand daughter of detail property ownership to the family first. And the property is never to be sold to an outsider.

Exactly I couldn't figure out how the property was ending up at auction but they saying they paid the taxes. Part of the land taxes weren't paid so it jeopardized the whole thing but how does he force the sale of the PAID taxed land
@@blackangel181588 My understanding is that it's one big lot. But, it's been divvied up amongst the "heirs". Each heir has their share of the taxes on the big lot. The land that has not been paying taxes basically go into foreclosure - but it's just a piece of that big lot. Once you own a certain percentage of that big lot, you have more say in the decisions on the lot as a whole. In a sense, they are buying into the family and making decisions on the original owners behalf. The law seems to be designed to protect the original land owner. If that person informed every member of that family ("heir"), these guys wouldn't have been able to step in unless the taxes weren't being paid.

I have watched this happen in Tampa, FL. An area North of the downtown, and N. Of 275. My parents rented there for over 30 years.
First, small row-houses owned by black families were bought for a pittance and almost immediately flipped for profit. The downtown became more developed and a river-walk was built and rents began to rise. Apartment buildings, restaurants began to sprout like mushrooms. Today, there is a multiple-years waiting list for Affordable Rental units. That is, when you can even get on the list.
Micro-breweries, man buns, and joggers pushing baby carriages litter the landscape, as common now as the hearty Florida grasses that once grew on small, proudly-manicured lawns. The gentrification is complete.
Every time I drive through there now, I struggle against the urge to get out of my car and start screaming at these people to "Go home!"

My family is caught in this. Our Mississippi land is 1% ours now...if that. This sucks...I'm a 4th generation and the land was my great grandparent's land. I should've been raised there, but no I ended up in New Orleans. We as black people are so dislocated.
My great grandmother left heir property to our family in Georgia as well, about 53 acres. We didn't live on the property but I was out there every weekend growing up. Thankfully, we have a committee, consisting of 6-7 family members, that acts as a representative for everyone to take care of legal matters. So the committee basically acts as the person/entity that owns the land. However, the family does vote on important matters so the committee can't just do what they want. There has been a situation where individuals tried to sell their piece of the land or almost lost it but because the committee is like the acting owner the land was not taken or sold.

There shouldn't be a reason that you cannot get your 1% put into your name and deeded to you. All family members should agree the portion that you want is okay with them. Only if you have family members that are controlling narcissist will you have a problem. Do a free consultation with a estate lawyer about the procedure before you talk to your family. We did this 2 years ago. Luckily my family believes in Heritage and we get along. But there's always one in the bunch that wants to make things difficult and tries to persuade others with a bunch of constant loud talk so be ready
