One day after the lifting of a nearly 90-year-old ban on women wearing the Islamic headscarf in Turkey's state institutions the issue remains as divisive as ever.
Being religious or secular dictates the response.
For Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan it is a positive move and one of his reforms meant to improve democracy.
Speaking in parliament, the Turkish leader said:"A painful ban that has caused a lot of suffering to the parents of young people is lifted. A dark era has come to an end."
The decades old ban has kept many women from joining the public work force. Supporters of the scarf see the change as the restoration of freedom of religious expression.
Teacher Safiye Ozdemir is one of them:"According to the former regulation if you wore a headscarf, you could receive a warning and a reprimand within a certain period. Nothing else was said - it was done without even asking us to explain ourselves."
Erdogan's critics see his Islamist-rooted AK Party as seeking to erode the secular foundations of the republic.
Ilknur Cokbelgit lives in Istanbul and does not approve:"This is not good. I can't even imagine a civic officer wearing a headscarf. This was not the right decision to take," she said.

    The word ḥijāb occurs 7 times the Qur’an (at 7:46, 17:45, 19:17, 33:53, 38:32, 41:5, 42:51).
    It denotes:
A barrier between believers and deniers in the hereafter (7:46)
A barrier placed between the messenger and those who do not believe in the hereafter when he recites the Recitation or qur’ān (17:45)
A barrier or partition which Mary mother of Jesus placed between herself and her people (19:17)
A barrier or partition in the house of the prophet so that protocol might be observed between common believers and wives of the prophet (33:53)
A barrier or partition behind which the sun disappears at the end of the day (38:32)
A barrier or partition which prevents those who hear the message from understanding it (41:5)
A barrier from behind which God gives instruction to a mortal (42:51)
We plainly see that in none of those instances in which the Qur’an uses the term ḥijāb does it denote clothing of any sort - female or otherwise.

It is heart breaking to even see a ban on modesty to begin with. This is so nice for turkey. I live in the west and the way people are converting to Islam is mind blowing and most of them are young women who want to dress appropriate.

Recently I watched a video that the two daughters of British Prince Andrew while participating in a marriage party were wearing headgear/stylish artificial crown like caps. Queen Elizabeth also frequently wear hat. Its one's satisfaction what he/she wears. One may wear a scarf or may not it depends upon the wearer. I know that in Islamic world women prefer scarfs or duppata or such like things. Even in so-called secular India women/girls wear duppata and prefer to cover their heads and bosom. Recently, I watched a photograph of Indian PM Modi wherein he was touching the feet of her mother and his older mother was wearing saree and she was covering her head with saree.
Freedom means freedom in all respects. If in a Muslim state impose restrictions that women/girls must wear scarf that's dictatorship; if in secular or western societies women/girls are not allowed to wear scarf or burka that too is a dictatorship rather it's a worst sort of dictatorship. Dictatorship in the western democracies is not understandable.
I am a student of European History and well aware that the Church and Pope transformed Europe into Hell House. The Pope persecuted all progressive forces and defied the authority of Western rulers. Almost all beautiful European women/girls of different ages, under the garb of sin were abused by the church and Pope for centuries. The recent example is 15,000 children are/were abused in Australia by Bishop George Pell. The History of Church and Pope is bleak. In Muslim world caliph was all powerful so he was least concerned about religious exploitation like Pope.
Caliph was secular up to the extent of its subjects. The crescent had ruled over the cross for almost 450 years in Eastern Europe but even after such a long period the Eastern European are still orthodox Christians, wheres the Spanish Catholic church persecuted the Spanish Muslims and converted them to Christianity under coercion, threat and intimidation. In Spain the Jews and Christians were freely observing their own faith under Muslim rule. During WWII the 6 million Jews were persecuted and vanished by Christian West.
