Some missed points from Russian viewer here: 1. Those "spikes" on muzzle device also used for cutting(or rather shooting) barbed wire. 2. Muzzle devise connected to barrel through bayonet joint(not sure if correct translation) and not threaded like one on AK74. So it's not interchangeable. 3. In case he didn't make it clear - AK12 has free-floating hand guard. If you grip it with a lot of force - it will not affect your point of aim. 4. Magazine has a small flat section at the bottom that is parallel to the barrel, this way rifle is more stable when you rest it on the magazine. It also has indicator at the bottom that sticks out if mag is full, so you can check which one is fresh in the dark. 5. Hand grip contains cleaning kit - it's not a container for batteries or anything. Guys from military that already have their hands on AK12 say it's very easy to lose this kit. 6. Cleaning rod is in the buttstock tube in 3 pieces, so no container there either. 7. QD sling swivel made for this rifle is slightly longer, so you can't attach your sling swivel to AK12, but one made for AK12 will work with your magpul mount.

Its so neat to study Russian engineering. Because of the cold war they pretty much designed everything in a vacuum with the only outside influence being from espionage, which is a really slow way to get information into new designs. So from that, the West and the Russians came up with completely different designs coming at it from different angles. The Americans went for accuracy and ergonomics while the Russians went for cheap and ultra reliable. I hope I can go to Russia someday and learn some of the history of their military arms. @TheOtherWhiteBread0 CAF. The design on the AK-12 is fine with regards to magazine removal. It's not easy to do all of the fast reloads while laying down in a couple dozen kilogrammes of gear.
It’s funny hearing that the safety selector is somewhat antiquated because the point is so valid that it takes a moment to come back to the trigger - but then you watch GarandThumb’s frozen rifle series and you realise that safety can break ice so easily vs the AR systems that on the balance of things (Russia being cold and all) it probably makes sense to keep it for a while longer 😂
During development, the AK-12 prototypes were at one point built with an AR-style safety. This was abandoned for the traditional AK-style safety, to criticism from AR fans. One of the stated reasons for the final AK-12 being more traditional than prototypes was reliability issues with more AR-like features during testing. In general, a lot of criticism directed at the AK-12 comes from a very identifiably American-civilian point of view. This rifle was built to be manufactured for the Russian military. The regular infantry, to be specific (spetsnaz are issued more specialized rifles). The Russian infantry needs a very reliable rifle which is not complicated or expensive and functions well in cold conditions. It doesn’t need an overpriced sub-MOA rifle with potential reliability issues and compatibility with American stocks made for the AR platform. American military rifles are good, but they were designed to meet American military needs. Russia while developing the AK-12 tried an American military approach and concluded it was unsuitable for Russian military needs. American civilian needs never even entered the equation. The AK-12, at 1-2 MOA is as accurate as any military assault rifle needs to be. It doesn’t need to take AR stocks or slings because Russians don’t use them. It’s not intended for special forces so IR pointers are less of a concern. I don’t have a real AK-12 but have spent quite a bit of time with an airsoft replica (the one by Arcturus). The ergonomics, weight, etc are identical. If I were designing an AK, there are only four things I would change. 1. I would reconfigure the firearm so it has one solid rail on top instead of a dust cover with rails. 2. I would bring back the AK-105’s stock locking system, I don’t like the wobble when folded. 3. I would put a quad-sided railed longer handguard on. 4. I would, if it’s possible to do reliably, replace the magazine well to one which can accept magazines inserted directly. I’m not a fan of rocking the magazine into place.
1. prototype is more expensive to manufacture 2. less reliable than ak74 3. It is easier to make a tuning kit for ak74, than to change conveyor equipment for prototype manufacturing
@@iateuranium-235forbreakfas7 If they really really needed to discard all rifles and change to new ones, they could cough it up, but for basic military rifle this "lifting kit" for 74m is all right, it's not for high speed low drag guys, it's for people for whom uniforms were designed in such way so that they couldn't fit half liter bottle into any pocket.

Been through two wars with M 70 (Serbian) and i just love the AK platform. It would be very interesting to see your opinion on M 17 new Serbian modular gun in 7.62/6.5 Grendel and also your thoughts on that caliber that Serbian army will try to incorporate... Greetings to all good people around the world from Kragujevac, Serbia home of 'Zastava Arms' sorry for broken English though.... :/
I am a gunsmith, hunter, target shooter, retired law enforcement officer and a Marine Corps Vet, and I can say the AR platform in the 6.5 grendel is a real kick ass weapon and caliber combo! The new US caliber 6.8 SPC has the AR platform going in the wrong direction. They would have just as well adopted the AR 10 in 308 caliber, which would have served just about the same purpose and there are millions of 308 rounds already made! The 6.8 spc is just a necked down version of the old, obsolete 30 cal Remington cartridge. The cartridges are just as heavy to tote as the 308, which adds extra weight to the rifle and to the person carrying the magazines. The 6.5 grendel is a necked down 7.62 x 39 cartridge to 6.5 caliber and is very flat shooting at ranges up to 800 yards! The 6.5 grendel is also a lot lighter to carry , which cuts down on the weight of the rifle and magazines. The only draw back to the 6.5 grendel cartridge is that you can only put around 31 rounds in a 30 round AR mag because the cartridges are tapered. A different, more curved magazine has to be used in order to be able to put in 30 rounds. I have killed running deer at 425 yards with the 6,5 grendel and it will knock them down like they were hit with a sledge hammer! If the military wanted a better long range cartridge, the 6.5 creedmoor would have been a better choice, but for the grunts that carry the rifle and magazines, the 6.5 grendel would have been a better choice than the 6.8 spc!
@@marvinwebb1465 Thank you for your answer and opinion, even more because it came from man with that level of experience, expertise. Being said that 6.5 is a superior HUNTING caliber and after various experiences from modern warfairs (Afganistan, Iraq and so on) armys around the world started to think how to put it in use. US army still experiment, while Serbian Army incorporated 6.5 like standard (along with 7.62) This is possible because of M17 simple change of barrels. Balistic is straight and numbers also. 6.8 is better for single action snipers, and 6.5 grendel has shown good results in automatic fire in various distances (best around 500-800m up to 1000) so the caliber is incorporated into the Serbian Army and her new modular M17. Ammo is also produced in 'Prvi Partizan' factory (avaliable in US) You are also right about 308 great calibre also well produced and available. Why 6.8? And here we came upon story about money and military-industrial complex and so on. Great deal of money is flying around there, and you well know how those things are going... Serbian Army inherited a large amount of ammo in 7.62 and producing a fine ammo for it, but research shown that 6,5 have more energy on target on distances 500-800 and more meters. They choose 6.5 grendel over 6.5 credmore because M17 modular gun and receiver and neck of the barrel. Credmore doesnt fit. So, on M17 by simple click on the button you can change the barrel 7.62/6.5 magazines are the same. Again thank you for your opinion and big respect from Serbia
We probably won’t see the M17 for a while, only due to US import laws and I’m sure Serbian export laws regarding firearms. Unless a company takes up the responsibility of importing and converting M17s to semi-auto with proper barrels and receivers, we likely will not see the rifle unfortunately.

And yes, Ratnik is in 90% of russian detachments, I have a full pack myself, 1st class helmet- 5 class vest-armour-uniform-flashlights and stuff - somewhat near 200%, Ratnik is very good compared to NATO gear (helmet is the best), and VERY easy and 100% legal to get.
Only here because I saw someone call you out for trigger finger position and not clearing the gun on camera. But now I can't find their comment. Shun the non believer.
The 5.45 × 39 cartridge has a lower recoil momentum than the 5.56 × 45 cartridge. At the same time, the mass of moving parts in the AK-74 is only less than 10% higher than the mass of moving parts in the M16A2. In addition, the AK74 has an effective muzzle compensator. So the reasoning about the great recoil on the AK74 compared to the M16 is inspired more by the impressions of the AK-47 and AKM (with its cartridge of 7.62 × 39).
No it’s because the AK platform has a more rigid approach to handling recoil. Just because the round may produce less energy it does not mean that the way it passes through the rifle and shooter will be the same. It is the platform and gas system itself that makes the 5.56 typically softer.
Don't forget, Direct-partial-impingement on the AR platform has a mechanical axis of momentum then piston driven platforms. Mass isn't nearly as important as axis of momentum when it comes to recoil. The M27 can be nearly identical to an M4, yet have twice the felt recoil, depending on several dozen circumstances.

@@patchesthehyena7825 Thanks, appreciate it, it's actually quite a valuable detail on the AK-12, most of the time a soldier fires while prone. The Russians really focused on practicality in combat, which is why to me I feel like details about fire selectors and magazine releases are secondary.
@@patchesthehyena7825 "why they never did that"
Because they never asked to. Russian AKs were always designed with the military's requirements in mind, which are rather strict, especially then it comes to the complication of parts.
@@speedyguydima how come only the generals or leaders know the mission and troops don't? Kill leader and you have a bunch of free kills so idk but not saying your wrong
I'm from Russia and I was too disappointed how they cancelled the prototype and went with "AK-74 with pikkatiini rail" path. Such a let down.
Agreed
1. prototype is more expensive to manufacture
2. less reliable than ak74

@divinekamikazee is it the same company though? Sorry I'm not well versed in this stuff. If not the same company, how does that work?
It can be a gun for a blank cartriges with changed barrel from ak 74, he said that has different barrel
@divinekamikazee don't think so! its just imported as parts kit and put together in local gun-shop. US don't have competence to replicate such kind of stuff, actually top 3 worst AK knockoffs where made by US companies.
Another small detail that you did not show: earlier (AK-74) cleaning accessories were located in the butt, now in the AK-12 they were placed in the handle, the ejection button is clearly visible in the video.
From Russia with love, thx man for this video!
My God almost zero recoil, I want one of this.
Then you should try the AK107 its soo nice.

Been through two wars with M 70 (Serbian) and i just love the AK platform. It would be very interesting to see your opinion on M 17 new Serbian modular gun in 7.62/6.5 Grendel and also your thoughts on that caliber that Serbian army will try to incorporate... Greetings to all good people around the world from Kragujevac, Serbia home of 'Zastava Arms'
sorry for broken English though....
Ammo is also produced in 'Prvi Partizan' factory (avaliable in US)
You are also right about 308 great calibre also well produced and available.

@kentucky fried That's a level of understandment, wow) I am from Southern myself - and no, AK-12/15 was only shipped to SOBR(SWAT) of National Guard and to the FSB Spetsnaz, most of rifles are actually in Chechnya and around Saint-Petersburg, other regions get only modification kits for their AK-74M. The point is - it is the same but Fab-defence modified AK, just with the fancy rails and two-shots, nothing that highly needed. So army just upgrades oldschool 74, though we're coming to the red-dot age, those are finally shipped to South/West in great quantity.

Dude, you ARE at Rifle Dynamics. The AK-74 has a military trigger, just one that Jim sprinkled some of that special sauce on.
Is that the rifledynamics m4 stock conversion? I'm only a minute in and considering buying onw for that sight pic

The original AK-12, that we see in videogames like Battlefield 4 had serious problems in reliability, because Russia is a place of mud and cold winters (i'm russian, so i know, what i'm saying). And definitely - the cost. AK-200 is very, damn, expensive and the RF forces doesn't like the expensive service weapons.
