Used a vz58 for a year in Iraq as a contractor. Not a terrible gun, mine was brand new, hand guard would heat up a lot after a mag or two, but accurate, easy to control, and obviously super cheap for our company. We also had cz75 sp1s which I really loved actually.
...the new ones literally come with barrels the manufacturer got made elsewhere because they realized they were better in every way; Lothar-Walther CHF barrels. @@josephgogola
I ran a VZ58 in a Vicker's AK class. Vicker allowed it and used it as a teaching point, showing its capabilities and differences. The bolt hold open feature was fantastic during speed drills; I was switching magazines while everyone else was doing "pull trigger....click". On day two, a couple other guys and gals tried it, loved that it was lighter and "handier" than their AKs.
I’m from Slovakia, former part of CzechoSlovakia. We still have vz 58 in our arsenal, although civilians go more towards AR-15 these days. Source of cheap, surplus vz 58s and ammo is gone. Anyway, you know the word Pistol came from Czechs? Yeah. In medieval times, there was an uprising against the church which they wanted to be reformed (same as Lutherans later). Warriors of the group called “Husite” (named after reformer Jan Hus) used a pipe filled with gunpowder and rocks, which they called “píšťala” or translated “a flute”. Now from word Pistala you know where the word pistol came from. Also word robot is of czech origin, coming from a book of czech writer Karel Capek, named RUR or “Rossum's Universal Robots”.
My Czechpoint/ CSA Sporter (VZ-58) has used 4,200 rounds of ammo. I bought the rifle here (in the US) in 2019, nib / new-in-box. Zero issues, very high quality! 98% of the ammo has been fed from only two (2) plastic magazines..Even these magazines are still very rugged and 100% reliable. My wife "Mrs. Liederlover" and I drove from Munich to Passau last September, then to Cesky Krumlov. This is in the southwest area of the Czech Republic. Very nice medieval town with friendly, hospitable people. We stayed on the main street in the Old Town. A military surplus store on Cesky's main street, near the Castle, keeps a deactivated VZ-58 outside the front door during business hours.

Don't know if anyone reads the comments on these older videos, but it just occurred to me it would be brilliant to do some reliability tests like the mud test on the VZ.58 it doesn't look like it would suffer the same ingress of debris like a standard AK because of the bolt and safety selector. However I also suspect it may fail in arctic conditions with that safety too.
@@iowa_lot_to_travel9471 doesn't surprise me, SKS are fantastic rifles. I only prefer AK because of the detachable mags, but I wouldn't feel inadequate using a SKS even today. To be fair to Brandon it's a completely different rifle that looks like an AK platform rifle but the operating mechanism looks more like the SKS. I personally don't like the profile of the vz. 58. It personally looks like an franken AK to me but that's just personal preference.
Funny story, the female "Sniper" in Full Metal Jacket is actually using a vz58. When Czechoslovakia was still taken over by communists, we sent a lot of military aid to NVA, vz58s being among that.
@@XD-ew4cf That's not so. Full Metal Jacket was filmed in Norfolk and London during the cold war 1980s. VZ58s were used as Czechoslovakia were prepared to sell them directly to the production team in Britain and they could be legally imported. Platoon on the other hand was filmed in the Philippines and if you watch closely the NVA are armed with Chinese Type 56 SKS and Chinese Type 56 AK47s complete with folding bayonets. As seen when Bunny the shotgunner is bayoneted to death and when Sgt Barnes is killed by the main protagonist. Chinese AKs and SKS were not hard to buy in that part of the world following the toppling of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia.

My first ever gun after turning 18 was a Vz. 58 in the classic configuration with the bakelite furniture. I've since modernized it with various mods but the core rifle is still my beloved first gun. And yes, even the full sized rifles get extremely hot extremely quickly lol
Picked up a 16” barreled version when surplus ones were first coming into the US. I only paid $300 and got 5 mags to boot. Wish I’d bought a truckload of them.
Dude my p10C rocks. Literally just chews through rounds. Most positive mag release and precision with a stake your life on it reliability I’ve ever shot in a handgun
I've said it elsewhere, and I'll say it here; when it comes to guns, the Czechs are like an Eastern European version of the Belgians - not the first place people think of when they think firearms design, but quietly geniuses.
@@mkfort we sort of count anything east of Germany as Eastern, I know if you take Russia into account then Czech republic is right in the centre of Europe but most of us dont think of it that way.
By far my favorite and go to rifle.... Dressed mine in Fab Defense furniture with a Vortex Strikefire up top. Green Mountain barrel and no complaints.... despite some bad reviews of their barrels.
Rounds clip compatibility is useful in the way that you can do partial reloading in action, saving you from the modern "tactical reload" and the need of dozen of magazines. Pretty smart, in fact. Less mags, more rounds, same weight.
The viz 58 also known as the cz858 is an excellent rifle Milled receiver, chrome lined barrel And empty mag hold open Many many many will be found at the bottom of canadas lakes (or so the RCMP will have us think)
The 7.62mm Sa vz 58 has only the 7.62x39 cartridge in common with the AK ;) I had the pleasure of meeting its designer, Mr. Cermak, in person. On the other hand, the AK has a percussion mechanism copied from the Czechoslovak self-loading rifle ZH 29.
Excellent firearm I've got 3 in fact. One 10" in 7.62 one 10" in 5.56 with the AR mag conversion and a long 18" in 7.62. So many good high quality aftermarket parts made for them that a guy can totally have different setups. The long ones aren't chrome lined tho...found that out after a few mag dumps!
Wow. I never liked this specific version of 58 with this incredibly short barrel but DAAAMMNN - it looks deadly AF with silencer on. Also, thanks a lot for this review. As a czech patriot, I learned to love VZ58 (even though the original design/aesthetics is ugly AF) and have always been looking forward to you reviewing this gun. Too bad you could not show burst fire... VZ58 has beautiful and sexy rate of fire. Simply love it. It cuts any target in half.
I have a vz2008 which is a different model slightly from the original but it works great. I also put on the rear sight rail that garand put on . It works great for red dots.
@@JustSumGuy01 we don’t talk about those. I don’t consider anything after Scott and Stonebridge to be cannon to the series lol. Honestly, the best season was the original one with Richard Armitage

"I like Strike Back" oh hell yeah bois. Great show, although I didn't really care for the last seasons (got kinda repetitive). But the first like 5 seasons (including the first with Richard Armitage) are great.
Great rifle. Sadly, banned here in Canada along with all our modern semi autos May 1st 2020. They have to be handed in or destroyed. Don't ever give up the fight for your firearms/self defence rights.
The Czechs are honestly probably my favorite country in firearms design. They made the VZ-52 rifle for Soviet conscripts but when the rifles showed up alongside the ammo from another Eastern Bloc country, they werent even the same caliber. (The rifle was chambered in 7.62x45) they had every intention of chambering their delayed roller blowback pistol in 9mm but were told "NYET!" and had to put it in 7.62 tokarev. The 58 is the epitome of the Czech people giving big middle finger to Russia. Just like they did 10 years after this design was complete, when they protested Soviet occupation. They, to this day, still loathe their own government that has deep ties to the Communist Party. I love these people lol
I don't know why you were offended by Russia, but I can tell you that no one showed us the middle finger. And rightly so, for few can withstand more than one nuclear warhead.
brandon herrera also thinks 5.45 is armor piercing and doesn't know what underslide is. if you treat it more than "funny man shoot machinegun" like fps russia you're probably gonna get lied to
Slovak, live in USA and have one in my collection. ;) It reminds me my military time... Its fun to shoots old school iron sights, 200m 12''x12'' target... always a fun ;)
That weight savings vs the AK platforms is actually pretty cool. Definitely like the manual of arms, last round bold hold feature, and the safety more so than the AK. One or two of these rifles will be making it's way into my collection in the future.
Great video, pitty that you have chosen this... shortened cripple. Try fullsize Vz.58. I bet you will like it. Anyway thanks for a nice review, thanks for mentioning our weapon industry and our small country! Greeting from Czech republic.
I did my my national service for Armed Forces of Slovak Republic. This weapon was a great joy to train with, maintain it, disasembly&assembly super fast. I remember ending up no. 8th out of 160 fresh recruits on the shooting tests. Night shooting in a snowy winter using lighting bullets was also cool.
I always say it is a kind of a compromise between the AK and AR platform. It is a bit more ergonomic and lighter than the AK but still soldier-proof and built like a tank... :) Should I choose one gun for SHTF situations this would be it :)

Yes, this scene was make in Czech republic. FIlm crew called to NATO that line of tanks is only for movie making and not start of the war.
@@tomaspolacek5365 I know that as well. I saw Brandon Herrera's video
In my country, people literally bring a bucket of water whenever they are shooting a polymer Vz and toss the gun in when it heats up.

As being Czech I'm really proud to see the Vz. 58 on your channel :). For us here, it's legendary gun.
Not for me :)
Zdravím :) Well, actually for me is much more legendary the CZ 75 as one of the first and most advanced Wonder Nines. And people who served a military (which I'm not) tell you sometimes horror stories about the Vz.58 :D So of course, there are better Czech designed and made guns, but the 58 is one of the most popular.
Had my SKS in cooler weather last month. Shot like a dream. Not much can delay the bolt. Works great
@@iowa_lot_to_travel9471 doesn't surprise me, SKS are fantastic rifles. I only prefer AK because of the detachable mags, but I wouldn't feel inadequate using a SKS even today.
My friend has allot of experience from his time as a 249 gunner in Iraq, but his favorite rifle is a SKS, he embarrassed a couple guys with ARs outshooting them with his old Yugo at the range at 100 yards. Was quite funny to watch.

@@Kai-ky6tf using non-Warsaw Pact mags isn't better
To be fair to Brandon it's a completely different rifle that looks like an AK platform rifle but the operating mechanism looks more like the SKS. I personally don't like the profile of the vz. 58. It personally looks like an franken AK to me but that's just personal preference.
The Czechs have made excellent firearms for a long time. They made the 1911 better too among others
Funny story, the female "Sniper" in Full Metal Jacket is actually using a vz58.
When Czechoslovakia was still taken over by communists, we sent a lot of military aid to NVA, vz58s being among that.
Same thing in "Platoon"

@@Seasniffer1969 czechs

Aaah our classics :) thanks for review, greetings from Czech republic :)
