    I was doing something similar with characters, recently. Simplifying all the traits I had come up with down to a single metaphor like "the highwire dancer" or "the pirate admiral." Not literally what they are, but trying to encapsulate the tone of their personality so I can remember it more easily while writing. I don't know if it works yet, though. The ones I came up with didn't imply any change, so they don't say anything about the character arcs, for example.

    • @JoriamRamos
      @JoriamRamos  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh this is interesting! I got this idea of the 'core vision' from game design rather than writing - if you watch interviews you'll eventually stumble upon it. But, as you might imagine, character writing is quite different in games.
      For how long have you been using those sentences you mentioned?

    • @Halberddent
      @Halberddent ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JoriamRamos Unfortunately, not long at all! They're for a project I'm still outlining. In the last project, my characters didn't feel quite complete until late into editing, so I'm trying to get ahead of that this time. (So I can't actually recommend the strategy yet, I don't know how well it will work.)
      I was thinking of it sort of like giving the character a "funny hat" to distinguish them quickly, but for the benefit of the author instead of the audience.

    • @JamesBond-os9kr
      @JamesBond-os9kr ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can turn the metaphor into a small sentence like "the pirate admiral who learns to be confident". Maybe it helps

    • @writerducky2589
      @writerducky2589 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nice, I've been doing something similar. Simplifying the character to their core being really makes it easier to remember what they're about and avoid too big deviations when writing.
      Usually it's tied to a distinct physical descriptor too. Being able to "see" who they are makes them much easier to understand. I.e. "the mercenary with 'a face as weathered and brown as an old oak,'" would tell me he's a robust old man who's seen some stuff and desires to protect the ones around him. And then whatever he says and does would be rooted in that.
      If I had to dissect it's like breaking them down into symbols.
      To me:
      "Mercenary" implies strength and fighting spirit.
      "Oak" also means strength, but also protectiveness, warmth and wisdom.
      "Weathered" means having gone through tough times and triumphed.
      "Old" survived for a long time.
      "In the face" because the face is usually the first thing you notice about a person, implying he's upfront and courageous.
      Normally I don't actively think about the "symbols" in such detail, and just go for what "feels right" or makes the character "pop" in my mind. Kind of similar to using Lyra's Golden Compass, I imagine.

      @Halberddent ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@writerducky2589 This is EXACTLY it! Yes. The main purpose is to maintain consistent characterization, that's a good way of thinking about it.

    Great advice! I have been getting frustrated with internet writing advice lately...they all seem to be biased and too heavily structured. In other cultural traditions, it's not all about eg. the 3 act structure and character arcs.
    For example, in Indian aesthetics, the purpose of any art is to invoke emotion, exactly as you say, though the theory goes into far more detail about secondary and even tertiary emotions. The language of Indian writing is also influenced by this: for instance the emotional mode of peace and beauty is delivered by beautiful descriptions of nature. Sometimes, there is nothing familiar to the Western mind in Indian mythology like character arcs: the hero is good the whole time, because how to become good is not as important as feeling inspired by his righteousness.
    I think this is important with fantasy especially, since it is meant to be a modernization of mythology. Mythology (at least still-living mythology like in Hinduism as opposed to Greek) isn't primarily about entertainment of the stories, spectacle of magic system, or even the Greek teaching that art should be used for state propaganda. Rather art is an appreciation of human experience, such as emotions, which almost never follow strict logic progressions and templates in how they are expressed. That is what is missing from the writing and worldbuilding of fantasy and related genres for me. Glad to see this video moving past this!

    Slowly melting scepticism when faced with a new voice. I think you won me over in the end on that one. A lot of the emotions I ended up assigning have direct correlates in what main characters are feeling in my writing (awkwardness of having emotions, anarchic play or a sort of religious grief over the world) so I'll need to revisit that to see how much I've identified the cores of the story and how much those are just 'the emotion that drives the protagonist' but practice makes perfect.

    This is really where any writer should start. This is at the crux between bad and good writting. Any writer may still struggle with executing what is at the heart of their story those that are great are great because their execution comes through to the audience. But even if you're less experienced and stumble as long as you have that emotion guiding your work it will be stronger than those who don't. When you write without that emotion you get things like Diseny's wish. A vapid experience devoid of meaning because it's been lost. You get stories that are forgotten or just meh. Go deep. Go to something that means a lot to you.
