Kiki is Not a Delivery Service
Studio Ghibli's Kiki's Delivery Service is a joy to watch - one of those movies that stick with you for years. But why?
It's not the animation, not the dialogue, not even the characters. As always, director Hayao Miyazaki managed to inject the whole story with a worldview that beautifully frames one of the ways we can think of 'growing up'.
Let's talk about it.

Evidently I do not own Kiki's Delivery Service, it is a Studio Ghibli movie:

    Just recently I created my own Elemental Power System and I feel very proud of it. I wanted it to be simple to understand, but incredibly complex. (Here's a brief summary) There's a total of 9 Elements; 7 Natural Elements and 2 Force Elements. It has many of the same Elements as any other traditional Elemental System, but that's where the similarities stop. Each Element goes beyond than what you normally think they do. Water can affect Time itself, Ice can manipulate Shadows, and Fire can control Life. There are limits and rules I implemented such as how many Elements one person can wield, how much Mana is being drained per use, etc. This is so much more than just your typical Elemental System that I can't comprehend just how complicated this system I made, yet it's all simple to understand. I wanted this system to be perfect for my world building so everyday I work on it, fixing mistakes and adding rules.

    I don't like your definition of hard and soft magic systems. A better definition is: Hard Magic System has rules, regardless whether the reader knows about it or not. Soft Magic System doesn't have any rules, it's freeform. An example of hard magic system is HunterxHunter. And an example of soft magic system are Studio Ghibli movies.

    I loved this video! And it was just what I needed to hear. It's so easy to get wrapped up in the magic system or physical conflicts that you forget why you even wanted to tell your story! So many movies, video games and shows forget this! But when they get it right they end up making a master piece. Thank you for bringing this to light! 😊

      Thanks! Honestly - I use those videos as a sort of ritual to remind myself over and over and over again that form without substance will not get me very far. It's so easy to get caught up in the magical details, and I'm often guilty of that. But I feel the more I repeat to myself, kinda like a mantra, that there's more to stories than rules, the more I can internalise it :)

    I agree that the core of a story, its core purpose is important, but I think the execution does more than just grab our attention. The animation, soundtrack, voice acting elevate it beyond a simple argument or lesson, they make the core message feel real. When you see it portrayed so vividly, you can begin to actually believe in it.

    • @JoriamRamos
      @JoriamRamos 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree! If Miyazaki didn't have a stellar execution of his ideas, we'd feel less connected to them, I'm sure. But I guess in terms of what makes a story lifechanging, I think the main purpose, the proposed worldview is what does it. Even if purpose alone can't make or break a story, I think it's a necessary ingredient to profound revelations. You what that made me think of? This clip here: th-cam.com/video/Lsj0mY13t9s/w-d-xo.html I first saw this in my early 20s, when I was not terribly far away from schooldays and just starting my career. The song is... bad! The animation is... bad! But the whole thing has heart - and it stuck with me for over a decade now. And I'm somebody who watched at least one youtube video every day since those days. Among this impossible library of watched videos, this one is still close to my heart. Strange, right? Hard to pinpoint, easy to experience. But that's what I'm talking about :)

    It was an interesting watch. And an interesting review. Sometimes movies just hit differently at certain times in our lives. The Iron Giant was the movie I really liked as a kid but didn't really remember that much. Then when I turned 18 or 19 it became very relevant to me when I was in college. It let me know I had a choice and I could be or do whatever I set my mind to, but then something like monsters University says it's okay if you're not cut out for something. There's always opportunities that can interest you that would be up your alley. Kiki's delivery services isn't normally on my radar but I do think of spirited Away and Howl's moving Castle quite a bit.

      "Sometimes movies just hit differently at certain times in our lives." you're so right! And I absolutely love this phenomenon. The movie doesn't have to change as long as you change. I think Kiki touches me in a different way as an adult, as I've connected a huge part of my life with forming strong bonds with people, and not relying on the usual pathways people use to connect (family, school, work friends etc). And I'm trying to extract this lesson here. I should go back to making videos about Howl 😂

    Just read, "Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe." It was okay. But, it wasn't impactful. It was just a coming of age story. To be clear, it wasn't bad, but just simple. It didn't have character growth. Time passed, and the main character and the rest of the cast changed. But, they didn't grow. The author tried to show growth, but I don't know. It just didn't resonate. The main character and his best friend are gay. They figure this out and our together by the end. But, it seemed forced or pointless. Like the author made them gay just because. So, I get what you mean. You can have all the right elements to a great story, but unless you feel the change and growth is earned. It's just words on a page. Safe travels.

      @LibraryofAcousticMagic3240 Yes, exactly. I enjoy gay love stories, too. I bought the sequel, sense the first was such an easy read, and I want to see if he's found that missing element that the first one was lacking. I can't explain it, but I just didn't connect with the characters, and I don't know why? It was like he wrote a story with all the "expectations" of what should be in a novel. But, it didn't come alive for me. It was like checking off boxes of writing requirements: characters, goals, inciting incidents, etc . . . But, no real emotion.

    • @LibraryofAcousticMagic3240

      @@Dragonmoon8526 I didn't know there was a sequel... It's sort of rare for coming of age books with romance plots to have sequels if they don't have a dystopian or fantasy world setting. But if it isn't any good either, that rarity sadly doesn't save it.

    Here's my cultured, over detailed comment as an offering to the snooty frenchman and his pet octopus. I find it interesting that in Genshin, those who are passionate and ambitious make often mundane jobs and positions come alive as a result of their abilities and standing in the world. While in Avatar, society had to grow up around these individuals and even took advantage of their gifts, like the delivery system in Omashu, or the water elevators and ice tunnels in the North Water Tribe. The architecture takes advantage of magic being widely available and thus becomes tied to it. While in Genshin, you can find lawyers, inventors, warriors, businessmen, and just about any kind of person from any walk of life that could exist in our world, but with gifts that allow them to be better at it and even use the object of their passion as a source of power. At the end of the day, both are just different options for world building that use similar tropes as short hands that readers / players can latch onto easily. And there is plenty to learn from both if you're looking to do something like that yourself.
