Fixed! My 2010 malibu has suffered the p2135 and p0223 codes along with REDUCED POWER, SERVICE ESC, and SERVICE TRACTION messages for the past week. I've been driving to and from work in limp mode. I replaced the throttle body an hour ago and all codes went away on their own and car runs great!
I read on a Malibu forum that a faulty accelerator pedal can also cause the p0223 code, but since I had the p2135 as well I was able to narrow it down to the throttle body.
As far as the "tps kit" mentioned in this video... TPS kits are only available for V6 Malibus. NOT the 2.4 4cyl. You have to buy an entire throttle body assembly for the 2.4.
I didnt know that about the 4 cylinder vs 6 cylinder as far as being able to replace the TPS, I have done a lot of 5..3s etc and was always able to get the TPS kits, good to know about the 4 cylinders, thanks for the info!

My engine Power reduced comes on often but runs fine. Thinking is just the sensor. Thanks for this!! (2014 Malibu).
Something that no one is mentioning is that in a lot of cases, the wire connector to the TPS may have a connection issue. Before you go and spend a bunch of money on a new throttle body and air intake like I did, check the wiring to make sure that it is all connected. I think that most of these issues that people are having with the "Engine Reduced Power" and "Traction Control" can be solved by ensuring the wiring is still connected properly. My problem was intermittent and I certain that it was the wiring.
Gm put out a tsb or mentions the wiring in their tsb about this situation. It is a point of concern and should be checked but in my experience in doing a ton of these it's almost always the tps or the throttle body itself. But you are correct you should always check wiring on any component before just swapping it out.

Hey man I’m having accelerating problems as well but I don’t get a power save mode nor any codes when I hook it up to a scanner. Any idea if it could still be the throttle body?
Its possible but I would check it out closer before changing the throttle body. Do you have a good scanner that can monitor live data you can look at accelerator pedal and throttle body position sensor and see if they are operating correctly.
Where did you get the replacement sensor from? I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find it 😂
Okay just a quick and kinda dumb question, when the car key is turned, Is the throttle plate supposed to be opened up or moved by the sensor or is that only when the car finally turns on completely that the throttle plate moves?
The throttle plate might move slightly when key is turned on especially if it's dirty because the ecm will compensate for that and open the blades slightly but no it shouldn't be moving a lot or opening by a large anount. The tb is synced with your pedal sensor.
Do i have to clear the codes before or after replacing the throttle body? I put in my throttle body but still doing the shaking after having it on for 15min.
No if that's what the problem is it should run fine after installation.
Is it important to change the gasket. I ordered the throttle body but did not come with the gasket or new screws
The rubber gasket is reusable but look it over real good and make sure it's still in good shape, you should be ok if it's in good condition. Thanks for watching
I have an 08 same problem power reduced , I cleaned the throttle body it ran good but then now when I turn it on the rpms shoot as if I was accelerating. It'll lower back to normal if I put it in gear (Reverse and or drive) for neutral the rpms shoot but if I do it a couple times the rpms go back down . After that I can drive it but has a problem with rpms shifting any help? After about 20 min intro driving it'll read power reduce engine again .

So is the Tire pressure monitor on the throttle body as well? I need one for my 2011 chevy malibu LT flexfuel 2.4L. Because It keeps saying Service traction control and ESC and reduced engine power
Tire pressure monitors are on your wheels inside the tires they are called tpms sensors and they would not put your car into power reduced mode

To be sure you need to have someone scan the codes and see what it comes up with there are other things that can put it in power reduced mode besides throttle body

Make sure the inside plastic piece isn't stuck from the old one sometimes that can happen

No. What codes does it have ? The connector is also a common issue but it has to be scanned and diagnosed before anything.
What would make a 2010 Malibu not go forward but go in reverse? Would the throttle body or throttle body sensor do that?
Transmission is probably out that's common to have reverse and no other gears or vice versa. Of course do some simple checks like checking that the linkage is moving properly down at the transmission etc
think my2011 was not dong something but i open the transmission and a gear all the way in the back was broken. idk if 2010 is same transmission. i saw vid showing it could be a line at the buttom tht was crack inside the pan. 2011 has no pan under it.

You would have to have the codes ran and see what comes up could be accelerator pedal or all sorts of stuff
Would or could this still be the problem of the car doesn’t start at all or the key fob will lock and lock but it loses power when u try to start it with the key?

It wouldn’t start for me to take it anywhere but I went out last night to mess with it and cleaned off the cable which is exposed which looked white and corroded and everything popped back on... I’m not sure what’s going on sometimes it does that and sometimes on the dash it says esc etc...
Did your cars rpm gauge ever quit working with this problem? My car goes into a limp mode and I got to keep restarting it until my rpm gauge starts working and then it runs fine.
I don't believe so, that could be a camshaft sensor issue if rpm is dropping out. I would check codes

I had a 2010 Malibu that had this problem. It would drive just fine and then at random it would cut the engine power (first time scared the shit out of me because I was on a busy interstate in the high speed lane at rush hour and the emergency lane was all the way over to the right). I got contrarily used to it happening, I would always drive in the right hand lane (it was mostly a to work and home vehicle) until one night I was coming home and a deer hit me, just plowed right in to the passenger side of the car. I took it in for insurance repairs and when it came back out, I made it about 2 miles from the insurance place and the engine didn't just drop power, it died. I had to have it towed home, and when I got home it started up just fine, like nothing happened. Went to go to work the next day and got half way there and the engine died again. Long story short, this kept happening, along with no power even when power reduced wasn't activated (I floored the gas and went maybe 1.5 mph). My bosses brother is a mechanic so he called him, told us to replace the throttle body, did so and it kinda made it worse. He also said basically to get rid of the car. In short I ended up trading it in at a Toyota dealership at a loss, but don't regret it.
Funny story came out of it, the salesman that sold me my Toyota was telling me that his dad had the same gen Malibu with the same problems I had, and had it in and out of the shop every other week. One time he had to go to New York for business and while he was there, his car was stolen. Apparently the police found it a few days later, it was set ablaze and dropped off a bridge. Aside from the tools and stuff he had to replace that were in the car the guy said it was the best thing that ever happened to him.
How long does it take to RELEARN? Replaced mine 3 days ago and it still revs high.
I use the scan tool to do relearn but 3 days seems excessive you might have something else going on like vacumn leak etc

My car It starts shaking the engine light turns on then ESC and then traction control is on . And won’t accelerate.
So, I have a 2010 that is having the same issue. I replaced the connectors, throttle body, Mass Airflow, and the pedal. The problem seemed to have been fixed for right around a year. Now back in the same boat. Do the throttle bodies have a short service life? Would hate to think I would need to change out a throttle body every year? LOL
It's very possible, you can't really trust any of these parts anymore. There are 2 grounds on the side of the transmission facing towards the front that corrode and cause all sorts of issues I have seen that several times on those cars. I would check those ground thoroughly before doing anything else. They are bolted to the bellhousing on the trans that go to engine. Usually 2 black wires together with a big eyelet
@@HooptiesGarage I believe those grounds fixed the issue. I checked all the grounds I could find in the engine compartment. Had around 3 to 5 Ohms so cleaned everything and back down to 1-0 Ohms from the ground back to the battery. Drove the car 40 miles no issue. thank you for the quick response!
I have codes P1682 & P0171, I experience the engine shaking as soon they was done with my oil change. They advised me to check the codes and drive it for a while and it would go off. Now I cant get it to start. It will crank but wont kick over
P1682 is voltage supplied from ignition switch to PCM that's why the car won't start if it stated doing this stuff after oil change it might be a long shot but I would check it anyway because I have seen this on several cobalts check that big ground that goes to the transmission jiggle it around or visually check it and make sure it's connected and not off or broke off that ground can cause a ton of Gremlins on cobalts it usually has a big connector with 3 or ,4 ground wires going to it that would be where I would start especially if it happened after someone serviced the car and it's where I start on most electrical issues on cobalts I give that a quick check and you would surprised how many I have fixed just by checking that ground and repairing it
If that's not the issue then you are going to have to move in to a little more complicated diagnostics by getting a wiring diagram of that circuit that pertains to that code and start checking it out.
What the name of the tool you used to remove the bolts for the throttle body assembly.
I am assuming you are talking about the electric tool? Thats a 24 volt kobalt 3/8 impact.

I have a 2008 Chevy Malibu, It is it necessary to reset idle with a scanner or can I just disconnect the negative on the battery and it let it relearn the idle on its own?..please answer 😭 I’m changing my throttle body soon.
It will relearn pretty quickly on its own if you don't have the scan tool

I had this issues with my 2010 Malibu, I replaced the throttle body myself but had to take it to a local shop to have it reprogrammed for $75. Chevy dealer charges $150

I had codes pop up as well.. cleared them when I got the throttle body reprogrammed, but if your car isn’t idling high it might be something else
People!!! Fix the underlying issues first!!! Tb sensor shorting out is do to carbon build up not allowing flap to move freely!!! Must have good source of power aka battery spark fire air!!!!! Fuel!!!!

Aveces pasa eso, tiembla, y despues lo apagas y lo vuelves a encender cada 5 segundos hasta que no tiemble, ... eso tambien puede ayudarte... hasta que le cambie el cuerpo de aceleracion...

I feel like something is off or not hooked up right I don't think it would idle that high, those gms will eventually relearn on their own but I don't see it idling that high regardless.

p2135 is a correlation code between the pedal and throttle body it could be either one dropping out but the tb is most common

My reduced engine power and 100 other codes thrown at the same time like Service ESC... WERE ALL Because of Chevy"s SHITTY Battery Cable coming loose on the negative terminal. Save your $$$ MONEY $$$ Replace the Connector to the Negative post on your Malibu Battery or do what I did. I shoved a regular (Not Jumbo Sized) metal Paper Clip between the battery post and the connector to tighten the connection. Works for now. I will keep you posted. :-)

Do you have exhaust leaks? Misfires?
P0641 is usually a open or a bad ground on one of the 5v reference sensors. I would pull the pigtail off on of your 5v ref sensors and check voltage,I have also seen on the GM's a bad ecm ground can cause 0641, it's going to take some digging. You also need to check the wiring to your 02 sensor and make sure the integrity of that is good if you changed the sensor and still have that code it sounds like you might have a wiring issue and that might also fix your other code as well.

I’m looking at a 2009 Malibu for my girlfriend and it has a power reduced problem and the owner said a mechanic told him there is a screen in the motor or something can can be dirty and cause this problem do you know what he means? Is it worth getting and fixing

Probably talking about the maf sensor it has a screen at the throttle opening. You can check it only takes a few minutes but I have my doubts it's clogged that bad to cause these issues

See if it has the same codes as this video if it does then you are probably looking at a new throttle body. If it's different codes then you will have to do some research. . If your scan tool is good enough I would graph the tps and the throttle pedal and see if they are on sync or if one is dropping out.

I don't believe it's super critical to do relearn on these after a new throttle body the ecm will relearn on its own fairly quickly I believe
@@HooptiesGarage most of the time p0121 is related to a dirty tbi. If that does not work with out diagnose, replacement of it would be the case?
@@FreshKicks4545 on these model GM's and just about all newer GM's the 0121 is usually a faulty throttle body or tps sensor it's extremely common on these GM's and normally just cleaning them won't help, it won't hurt to try but my guess is the tps is bad and you can no longer just change the tps on these later years
I've had this code happen twice on my 125k mile v6 2008 Malibu. Last time was about 115k miles. It happened just recently again on a really long road trip on the Hwy and really freaked me out. I pulled over, ran diagnostics for the code, restarted, and all was good again. Next exit, I checked connections and found this vid. 99.9% sure the tps sensor is the problem. Do you have a vid on replacing it with a v6 vvt 2009 Malibu? If not I'll make a vid when my part comes in. Thanks brotha!

I’ve had the throttle body done, and mass air flow censor and my car is still doing it. Why? Engine power reduce, service esc, and service traction.
You need to have someone with a good scan tool check throttle pedal to throttle body correlation and see if the throttle pedal is dropping out. That's where I would start.

Cheapest rout!! Follow it before headed to shop!!! Check fluid level, check for frade wires at Tb sensor , replace air filter regap/replace spark plugs gap/tourque to spec!!! This is vital!! Put very good fuel injector cleaner to make sure injectors are not clogged!! If not fixed then clean Tb very good replace Tb sensor, do relearn process,, turn car on till it warms up, turn off for 60 seconds then back on 3 minutes all this at idle, take for ride reaching 45 mph at easy driving,,
Had a reduced engine power on my Impala. Remedy was a loose connection to the throttle body.

No you technically can do a idle relearn but the car will do that by itself pretty quickly without a scan tool

Did you scan for codes etc ? The connector to the throttle body also has issues if you disturbed it by changing the throttle body and it was fine for a bit it's possible you are looking at bad connector as long as you scanned it and it's not other codes causing the issue. I would do a good wiggle tug test if you don't have other codes on that wiring harness and connector.
This will be my last domestic. Never again.

It's not a issue with how clean it is the signal is dropping out and not in sync with the throttle pedal.
@@HooptiesGarage what if it says reduce power but no code about throttle? mine was showing ign switch 2 code and crank position not learned code. runs rough and when i give it gas it doesnt do much. will change coolant and check relay etc as a start
I replaced my throttle body after my 12 malibu kept going into low power mode every 30 or so miles...
Problem went away for 4 months before it started again! Any ideas? Could it be the connection?
It's possible they had issues with those connectors. Are you getting same codes ?
@@HooptiesGarage Yup. The same exact code, P2135. But it went away for a good 4 months and now it's cropping up again. I'm thinking of replacing the accelerator pedal position sensor to rule that out since it's cheap, and then maybe redo the connections between the new pigtail that plugs into the TPS and the rest of the harness..
