I had one of these when I worked in a tool manufacturers. It was used constantly in all conditions. Oil,heat ,rough treatment. Battery lasted 8 years. What a great watch. I've since bought another as the old one was so hammered. Great review as always,Jody. Best regards from Adrian in Sheffield South Yorkshire England 😀😺
"...because the whole world is made in China." :-) :-) :-) LOL Reminds me of: "The two most used phrases in the world are 'I love you' and 'Made in China' and neither of them offers you the slightest guarantee. Keep up the good work overthere!
Just bought an original stainless steel casio CA-901 (the blue version) from the early 80s :) for me it's the most beautiful calculator watch ever made! it even has a mini game build inside (digital invader)
This watch has made me a better man....I feel like buying flowers....I’m remembering birthdays and anniversaries...and ‘hellish’...I even want to make a child support payment...AND I don’t even have kids!!! A better man indeed!
I was born in 1980. I am 43 years old. My very first watch was a calculator watch in 1990. Later, I remember I also had a Casio ca-53w watch. Now, at the age of 43, I ordered it again and wear it. This watch is like the car in the movie. I pick it up and it takes me back in time. To the happy and unforgettable late 80s and early 90s...
Got the DBC32 also...fun fact: casio DBC32 worn by Joe Pantoliano (Captain Conrad Howard in Bad Boys 1995) and Casio G-Shock DW5900 worn by Martin Lawrence (Marcus Burnett also in Bad Boys 1995) i have both of these and now im trying to get these Marty McFly's casio 😆
I love this watch! I bought one 7 years ago and that started my obsession with Casios. I just wish they would re-release the F-100 that Ripley wore in Alien.
I love my little CA-53W a lot. I was just given a Garmin Vivoactive 1, though, and have stopped wearing this handy little miracle. I did wristmath a lot more than I realized! I'll probably hang onto it until the Garmin dies, because God only knows how many decades I have left on the Casio vs the Garmin...
I have had so many Casio watches in my lifetime I can't remember them all. Some can get expensive. I love all the gadgets you get with them. Loads of features for a bargain price.
I had one of these in the mid 80’s. I loved it. A great watch. I wore it all the time and it took a beating from this. I’m going to order another one now. Thank you for the memory flashback.
I had 2 or 3 of them in the late 80ties early 90ties where you where quite futuristic with them... ... maybe I should get one again - just for the fun of it...
I saw this watch in a magazine back when i was a school boy and I love it but never own 1 back then... Thanks to Casio that they are still producing it so that this watch is still a affordable classic watch,if Casio stop producing it back in the 80s or 90s this watch in the 2nd hand market should be quite expensive...
Had one as a kid. It was my response to the elementary school teachers saying "yOU wOnt ALwAYs haVE a caLCuLatoR". I just got another one, albeit not JDM like my long lost one, and I'm pretty stoked about it.
Literally tried on the Full Metal square G-Shock at a jewellers today. Amazing by the way. Can't get further away from this in the price, but ultimately like every Casio, they tell the time perfectly. Can't ask for more (and can be argued you don't need more). Nice review, nice watch
Cool..cool..cool.. Had the original back in mid 80's.It just stopped working and I was gutted. Collect Casio now , they are great fun. Getting a tastefull De lorean tattoo on arm soon. This is the first watch I will wear.
My dad just ordered me one of these as a gift for starting my new job! I've loved this watch since I was a kid but never got around to getting one, can't wait to wear it!
Some of us engineering types do actually use the calculator for nerd stuff but we are also grateful to those of you who simply enjoy the aesthetics of the watch.
Great video (and t-shirt), Jody. I own a few Casio retro watches, this is one of my favorites, it's so cool, so light, and sits so well on the wrist, you barely notice you're wearing it. Keep the great work, mate! Cheers from Brazil!
YUP! Just like you Jody, I also had one in early 80th. However, I do not remember really using the calculator feature. I just bought them only because it had a cool & nerdy factor to it and it is really amazing to see that watch is still around after almost 40 years. Just amazing. Do I still want one? NOPE! Not anymore, not after I turned a half of a century old and started wearing a reading glasses..... good old days, Jody, good old days.....
They are actually pretty durable I had them during my youth during my most distractive days I know I’ve had at least two they took a hell of a beating and kept going
I picked this up recently. Honestly, I don't have a strong nostalgia factor with it (I was born in '99), but I wear this because it looks cool, and more reliable than modern smart watch. To my surprise, it's also quite thin and low profile, and doesn't hurt my wrist wearing it almost all day long even for involving activities like drumming.
A true "Back To The Past" one for me as child I use look at these every week in the cabinet of Kmart to save my pocket money to buy One, the next & then a Seiko followed by a Citizen I think 30+ years ago. My father still has them, those were the days of bright lighted cabinets in department stores dazzling us. PS. Your end of VLOG JOMW content screen is still not displaying a video to click to view on at the finish of the VLOG on either my Apple or Android devices.
I have two of these, the regular one and a stealth black negative LCD (which is a pain to read in certain light conditions). Using the calculator on one of these is way cooler than the phone 😄. I love Casio's, i'd choose one over any exclusive luxury brand all days of the week.
Got a Navy one with a negative display recently. It looks great but there's no illuminator with it. So if it's really sunny or nighttime. It's completely useless! 😂
I just got one. I always thought they were cool but I never had one until now. When I took it out of the box I thought that it was smaller than I remember from elementary school in the late 1980's and early 90's. I took it off of the plastic holder and I thought it was very light. I am used to the heaviness of a Rolex Submariner. Also, they changed the "WR" on the watch which is somewhat disappointing. I put it on my wrist and it is very comfortable. It doesn't look so small when you actually put it on. I really like the accuracy. The instruction manual says + or - 15 seconds a month but I think that is better than that. It is just a fun watch to have.
I don't know why but yes they change the WR on the top right now as of 2021 , there is a yellow contour line (that look like an HDMI shape) ... WTF CASIO . I dont know why they did that but its a stupid move . The ca-53w is a classic , leave it like it is , its the same since 1988 . I dont understand why they did that . Im happy i got mine years ago and have the same design as the 1988 . But now i'm worry the classic model will not be available anymore soon . The good thing about the Ca-53w is that it was always affordable and widely available , so you didn't care about something happening to it cause you could buy another one right away . But now , the classic model will become harder to find . Thx Casio for that stupid move .
Morning Jody. Always wanted a calc watch when I was growing up in the 80s. Not sure now, not least because my Dan Henry 1970 44mm turned up yesterday, and it's a belter... And I accidentally bought a Laco Aachen B dial the other night, which arrives on Monday. "No darling, I've had both of these ages"
Good video, but I have to disagree on your point of that is a novelty watch, as it's best use scenario is traveling, I remember using this watch calculator to constantly calculate the currency exchange on other countries (let's be honest, you wouldn't bring a calculator on your pocket all of the time), plus the dual time and the fact is cheap enough so if you loose it on a trip, is easily replaceble
Watching because I needed to know how the buttons were. Because I plan on using the calculator often. Sad to know they aren’t great for using this as a primary calculator. Still buying it though. Seems damn cool
I know this is late but whatever, the buttons are a little hard to press with your fingers. I think you are supposed to use the blunt end of a pen to press them.
Bought it yesturday..Cant wait to get it.. Marty McFly, Heisenberg and The Joker wearing the same watch.. MUST HAVE!!! Thank you for an excelent channel, GF does not get it though.. "Why u need a nother watch...?"
I've had one of these calculator watches on my wrist since middle school. Which was in 1996. Fun fact: The first one I had was actually a Timex clone that had a 10-digit display versus the 8-digit of the real CA53W. I kept putting the movement in new Casio cases every few years until I went swimming with it on 3 summers ago and finally killed the poor thing. I also never keep the default resin bands, instead replacing them with a 20mm resin band that has a built-in compass
I believe that Timex clone (I know which one you're talking about, it looks like an identical clone of the CA-53 except it said Timex on the top with two water waves under the word Timex. I believe it was Timex watch model 71741) was a clone of the then Casio CA-60 which was a 10-digit display watch. The CA-60 had the day right in front of the time instead of the upper right side above the time as with CA-53. The Casio CA-60 I think was only around for a year or two though.
Bought the same watch last month and now have viewed you fine video. Reasons for purchase are exactly the same!! Retro-Smart Watch! I thought your presenting was great too :)
Geeky and nerdy as you like but great fun too. Not something I would buy but I do understand the appeal. The ‘fully grown man’ comment made me chuckle made me think of the film Airplane from the 80’. Know what, even if I hate the watch a JOMW video always raises a smile. A credit to you for that Jody. 😃
I used to have a similar Casio calculator watch in the late 1970s possibly 1980? It was the 'space invader' numerical game watch and I'm sure it had a light? Brilliant watch. 👍😎
@BEN 1891 Ah, interesting! Not sure why they are so valuable? It wasn't that great a game, just an advancing line of changing numerals that you had to match by scrolling through the numbers to match that one just generated to delete it, every so often I think an upside down U shape character would go across, hitting that would delete the whole row, it progressively got faster, if the numbers hit the end of the row it was game over, I think you had 3 lives or something? It was ok to pass a few minutes when I was in class at school but it quickly got boring! And the 2 buttons you had to constantly dab would eventually get worn, sticky and frustratingly wouldn't quite make the contact sometimes and you'd lose a life lol I don't think they were so expensive at the time, maybe £20? I should have bought a few and nested them away somewhere to sell in 2020 lol 😎👍😁 I also had the seiko databank watch from the late 1980s it came with the keypad device you needed to input the data, it had a dot matrix display and displayed a few lines of text per 'page'. I used to joke around with my mates that it could read heart rate, blood pressure, body temp etc in real time lol you could just write on different pages, Heart Rate 66bpm, Body Temp 37.5c, Blood Pressure.....etc etc I even made it read the weather.......Weather Sunny, Outside Temp 20c ...etc etc 😁👍😯⚠️ No device that small could do all those things lol nevermind a watch but they seemed to buy it.😯😊😁 I seem to remember it was very expensive but I bought it in a special offer deal way cheaper, it developed a fault and had to be sent back to Japan for repair under warranty, I remember it took months to come back, maybe 6-9 months? It had notes inside the box with hand written japanese writing, I guess from the tech who repaired it? I was told it would eventually develope the same fault again, some design flaw with the module or something? I still had it but moved house and not seen it for years, not sure if I left it or it is still in a box somewhere in my garage?? Like I left my Sharp Pocket PC in there for over 10 years lol it still worked though, I have a video of that on my channel. 👍😎⚠️
Great video Jody! Not the watch by Senna is knowing for , but with a easy search on google we see many 80's pop stars with this watch, including Senna, indeed.
Me too. The first model, I believe it was Made in Japan. Then, in early '90s became Assembled in Korea, later on, Made in China. I have one exactly the same, Assembled in Korea. The truth is that is not so functional (tiny buttons, no light, small digits) but is stylish and so Retro. Mine, runs perfectly for almost 30 years, I have it yet, I often wears it, and it attracts peoples look. I've change battery, two times, and resin band other two. And it is a 'hard' watch, durable, no scratches on plastic body and in glass. The small buttons of the calculator, act like a bumper to glass-display. An it is water-resistant; in the 30 years that I have it, i have done many times shower, wearing it. It's an awesome watch!
I like having a calculator on my watch. I don’t always want to be digging my phone out of my pocket at work. It’s nice to be able to do a quick calculation on the spot too. Alarm off/on easy. Hourly signal on/off easy. Hit a button for the date easy. If it had a backlight it’d be perfect. The other dbc in feature here seems cool but a bit too much - if I need five alarms I’ll start using my iPhone at that point.
LCD watches are for lightweights .My Sinclair black watch led was a mans watch ,no functions ,had to press a button to see the time and had a stunning 7 day battery life .Oh and cost £25 when I earned £3,50 a week at my sat job lol You were the coolest kid on the block tho even with dead batteries in it lol
"You're not really buying this to do sums, are you?" That is ONE of the reasons I'm getting it. I'm tired of pulling out my phone every time I need to do difficult multiplication.
the calculator buttons were never designed to be used by your finger it's designed to be used by your pencil eraser which makes it far more easy to use yes I own one or two they are geek chic I love it
And there is another thing, that I don't think that CASIO had thought about it when designed this watch, but happened. What? The small buttons of the calculator, act like a bumper to glass-display, so they add (by luck) to watch's durability.
Just got a casio DBC 611. I went back to 1988 just like that. I totally feel what you have said in this video. Always wanted one, decades later, I finally got one !
I like it! I might have to get one I think. I currently have a Casio DBC-611G calculator "data bank" watch (the gold model). Been a fan of Casio since I was a kid in the 80s (and of course Back to the Future is one of my favourite sci-fi flix).
Been wearing a ca53w for two years now, and it's still holding up. I had to replace the watch band with a Zulu strap however, because the watch band started to crack. I use the calculator function more often than not, it's pretty handy for if you don't want to do math in your head, and if you need basic math functions. It's my everyday watch, and I rarely ever take it off. Currently I'm trying to figure out a way to make it backlit, as that's e one drawback.
In BTTF 1 ( shot in 1984) , Marty wears a CA-50 . At the time of filming BTTF 2-3 (around 1988-1989) , the CA-50 was not available so its a Ca-53W . The difference is easy to notice cause the wristband on the Ca-53w has holes in it . Whats interesting is at the end of BTTF 1 , when Marty wakes up , see his parents in the new reality and opens the garage , see Jennifer , hes not wearing it although he feel asleep with all his clothes on . At the beginning of BTTF 2 , the ending scene of BTTF 1 has been reshot ( now with Elisabeth Shue as Jennifer ) and Marty is now wearing the the Casio ca-53w . I dont know why they decide to put the watch in the movie . Also IN BTTF3 when Marty wakes up at the doc house after the doc passed out seeing Marty in in 1955 , hes not wearing it . But a couple shot later , when he give the letter to the doc , he has it . Weird , Althrough BTTF 1 , the watch is sometimes there in some shots , sometimes not in the next shot ( the shots at the clock tower when hes going back , he wears it when outside but next shot in the car he doesnt have it ) . Movie mistakes !!!
With BTTF Part I it could be because they filmed different scenes at the same time such as the Twin Pine Mall scene with The Lone Pine Mall scene at the same time where in that Lone Pine Mall scene he doesn't have the watch on except one shot where he does. Michael J Fox was on a tight shooting schedule as he was filming the TV show "Family Ties" in the day and filming BTTF Part I during the night hours and weekends because Family Ties wouldn't allow him to miss any days or shoots to film Back to the Future, so it was agreed he would shoot BTTF after he was done shooting Family Ties for the day. Michael J Fox interesting enough wore a calculator watch that looks like the CA-50 and CA-60 (although it's hard to tell for sure) in Family Ties throughout most of the show's run from Season 2 and onward.
Actually, I do use it to do some calculations at work (they frown on phone use on the work floor). I don't do them when it's on my wrist (can't wear it on my wrist at work, either), but I do keep it in my work bag.
Even if I was born in the late 90's. I still value digital watches that came out during 80's and late 2000's. But hey good video even if it has been 3 years since the upload.
Also rooting for Leclerc! Damn Ferrari not helping favouring Vettel! They got me so pissed! I’ll be in Maranello next month and I’ll probably visit Lambo instead!
Remember having one of these when I was in school, and being told to take it off during a maths exam 😋
Same here ❤
I had one of these when I worked in a tool manufacturers. It was used constantly in all conditions. Oil,heat ,rough treatment. Battery lasted 8 years. What a great watch. This is my fourth Casio and boy am I a fan of it. So light and comfortable just a blast from the past.
Heath Ledger's Joker wears the same watch in The Dark Knight.
Wow first time I noticed, 👍
Really? I didn’t notice that. I’m gonna have to rewatch the entire movie now
Thanks for telling me this. Buying it !!!!
Mario G I couldn’t believe it myself. Had to search up a pic
Thanks for the observation

Literally tried on the Full Metal square G-Shock at a jewellers today. Amazing by the way. Can't get further away from this in the price, but ultimately like every Casio, they tell the time perfectly. Can't ask for more (and can be argued you don't need more). Nice review, nice watch
Dare I say it's a timeless classic
WHAT
HOW DARE YOU
Cool..cool..cool..
Casio is Commander Shepard approved and yes, the Casio CA-53W is his favorite watch on the Citadel. 😂💁👍👍👍
Had mine for years now. It's been in the shower, bath, swimming pool and snorkeled with it in the Mediterranean sea. No problems.
Some of us engineering types do actually use the calculator for nerd stuff but we are also grateful to those of you who simply enjoy the aesthetics of the watch.
Just bought the W-217H-9AV on your recommendation. You just can't beat a Casio!
Clocked out of my night shift and your notification popped up! And a Casio video!? Gotta watch it before going to sleep :)
I now find myself owning 21 Casio watches and I must say I think your videos covering them have definitely played a part in my new found addiction 😂
At least you aren't bankrupt mate! Imagine if i reviewed Pateks!? 😱😱
@@JustOneMoreWatch I'm going broke with all the money you're saving me!!

Time travel confirmed!!!. Video released 8th June 2019, @5 mins 30secs in, confirms date as 9th June 2019🤯. Marty is that really you?🤔
Or is it the ninth allready in Australia?
It’s the 8th in the UK, as I watch.

Great for working on high voltage panels when on Velcro band.

This watch was worn by Michael J Fox in part II and III. In Back to the future from 1985 he wore a Casio CA-50 from 1984.
Bought the same watch last month and now have viewed you fine video. Reasons for purchase are exactly the same!! Retro-Smart Watch! I thought your presenting was great too :)
Guys, im wearing this in 1955. I took my phone back, constructed a cell tower, started a cell company and typing this now. Get the watch, its cool.
I'm 48. I just got this watch yesterday. I'm back in my childhood 😎✌️❤️
And the 2 buttons you had to constantly dab would eventually get worn, sticky and frustratingly wouldn't quite make the contact sometimes and you'd lose a life lol
I don't think they were so expensive at the time, maybe £20? I should have bought a few and nested them away somewhere to sell in 2020 lol 😎👍😁
I also had the seiko databank watch from the late 1980s it came with the keypad device you needed to input the data, it had a dot matrix display and displayed a few lines of text per 'page'. I used to joke around with my mates that it could read heart rate, blood pressure, body temp etc in real time lol you could just write on different pages, Heart Rate 66bpm, Body Temp 37.5c, Blood Pressure.....etc etc I even made it read the weather.......Weather Sunny, Outside Temp 20c ...etc etc 😁👍😯⚠️ No device that small could do all those things lol nevermind a watch but they seemed to buy it.😯😊😁
I seem to remember it was very expensive but I bought it in a special offer deal way cheaper, it developed a fault and had to be sent back to Japan for repair under warranty, I remember it took months to come back, maybe 6-9 months? It had notes inside the box with hand written japanese writing, I guess from the tech who repaired it? I was told it would eventually develope the same fault again, some design flaw with the module or something?
I still had it but moved house and not seen it for years, not sure if I left it or it is still in a box somewhere in my garage?? Like I left my Sharp Pocket PC in there for over 10 years lol it still worked though, I have a video of that on my channel. 👍😎⚠️
One of my favorite watches
I had one these as a kid. I need to grab another one. These are cool! Thanks for the review.
Imagine if Arnie, Stallone, Norris, Willis an Co had sported this little 80's paragon masterpiece?
Unreal Show, beauty JOMW
good one Jody, had this in the 80s bought it again last year, the strap breaks easily but overall a great classic one by now
ooo how I lusted over a colour "speccy" when I had a zx81 👍👍
Had one of these as a kid in the 80's, so rece tly bought myself this exact CA53W from Amazon.. Why? Because nostalgia😎.
“Arguably a fully grown man”, he says. Classic!
One of my favourite watches along with my classic F91-W
Im not a fan of these watches but pound for pound you just cant beat the price! Thanks Jody :)
The watch used in the movie was the CA-50, but this CA-53W is very similar.
I may be wrong but i think it was the CA-50 in the first movie and CA-53 in the later instalments.
@@Prazelee You aren't wrong. That's exactly how it was.
Great video Jody! Not the watch by Senna is knowing for , but with a easy search on google we see many 80's pop stars with this watch, including Senna, indeed.
Oh. My. God. This watch just became so much cooler. I found a pic of him testing for Williams in 1983 with a Casio on! 😍😍
I just got one
.. love the Casio vintage
I've had one for about 30 years it says on the back assembled in Korea and it's still going strong great video.
I got me one and love it more than my $625 watch. Love using the calculator when shopping ❤
Im wearing mine now its been going for 5 or 6 years on the original battery
They’re more stylish than the databanks, but don’t have nearly the feature set... better buy both!
100%
DB520😍✔️
LCD watches are for lightweights .My Sinclair black watch led was a mans watch ,no functions ,had to press a button to see the time and had a stunning 7 day battery life .Oh and cost £25 when I earned £3,50 a week at my sat job lol You were the coolest kid on the block tho even with dead batteries in it lol
"You're not really buying this to do sums, are you?" That is ONE of the reasons I'm getting it. I'm tired of pulling out my phone every time I need to do difficult multiplication.
This is awesome! Just got one for my 16th birthday (my birthday's tommorow!)
the calculator buttons were never designed to be used by your finger it's designed to be used by your pencil eraser which makes it far more easy to use yes I own one or two they are geek chic I love it
Well I learned something. So. "Why dont you make like a *tree and get out of here"
And there is another thing, that I don't think that CASIO had thought about it when designed this watch, but happened. What? The small buttons of the calculator, act like a bumper to glass-display, so they add (by luck) to watch's durability.
My daily runner watch :D. I have a lot of watches, including automatic onces and one from my GrandPa from 1955. But this one is a rocker!!!
The band on this is so comfortable.
True, comparing to other Casios, this band is like from other planet. So nice and elastic.
Wow, this brings back the memories.
Gonna have to get one.
I just found on of these at a local Myer store.
I always wanted one. Now I have one!.
It's a cool,fun 80s watch.
Watched this a few days ago and now I'm watching it again wearing my new CA-53W!
Nice one! Hope you are enjoying it. Jody
@@JustOneMoreWatch Absolutely! Cheers, Jody :)
Currently I'm trying to figure out a way to make it backlit, as that's e one drawback.
it's too small lol I use the smartphone for a calculator. My fingers are too big to press the small buttons. I think it's a very good watch. Love it
You got me spending money on Amazon. Haha! Thanks to you I now have both the CA-53 and DBC-32. Awesome videos. Love the channel.
⌚😁⌚👍🏼
Love these watches...just ordered one after this video. Cheers!
I have 18 casios, including 1 that's called futurist ,there such fun watches.
I like to call them rabbit watches, because they sure do multiply like them if you’re not careful
99% perfect, only missing backlight
I already have this watch... And it is sooooo cool. From a 1980s nerd. Yours truly Uncle Rico
Great video and watch. Another 80s reference, I noticed on reruns of Hill Street Blues, character Lucy Bates wears one
It was a CA-50 on earlier scenes then moved to the CA-53W on later scenes for some reason.
Actually, I do use it to do some calculations at work (they frown on phone use on the work floor). I don't do them when it's on my wrist (can't wear it on my wrist at work, either), but I do keep it in my work bag.
Just got one and love it!
Even if I was born in the late 90's. I still value digital watches that came out during 80's and late 2000's. But hey good video even if it has been 3 years since the upload.
Great one Jody... Damn that watch was probably 30$ in th 80s! F1 is in my backyard this week-end my friend! Long live the groundhogs!
Maaaate! Montreal? I'll be tuning in. Leclerc ftw!
Also rooting for Leclerc! Damn Ferrari not helping favouring Vettel! They got me so pissed! I’ll be in Maranello next month and I’ll probably visit Lambo instead!
Hi J. Nice video like all your content. 👌
