  • We replace the white board in our kitchen with a glass black board that is both functional and decorative. The project allows you to use the picture frame and style of your choosing, and you only need a few inexpensive supplies.

Love it. Looks hundreds of times better than the white board.

Could I add LED strip lights to the frame and have it look like a bistro sign?

I just got a huge secondhand frame from the goodwill. I saw this video after painting my glass white. Fingers crossed! Painting the glass has an advantage over putting paper behind the glass in that there is no awkward gap between the writing surface and the backing color. It will work fine to use paper, but I prefer the look of painted. Note that you don’t even have to paint the glass. You can use mirror clips to hang sheet glass or an old tempered glass table top on the wall and right directly on the clear surface. This is the kind of high-end dry erase board that universities now use. Do not use plexiglass. Plastics degrade when they are sprayed with alcohol. Most dry a race board cleaners include alcohol. Alternatively, the cheaper version is to just put rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle to use. This will damage your plastic whiteboard overtime.

I’m thinking of doing this with white. Did it work out as nice as the black?

why do you need to spray paint the glass? Why not just a piece of black paper pushed up against the glass from behind the frame?

You actually don’t have to paint the glass. You can hang clear sheet glass on the wall and still write on it. Old tempered glass table tops are great for this. You will just see the color of the wall behind. Painting eliminates an awkward gap between the surface that you write on the end of the colored backing that makes the writing easier to read.

Hi , will this work on plexiglass?

    • @nobodynohow8039

No. Rubbing alcohol degrades plastics. The spray cleaner that you use for white board markers would damage the plexiglass over time.

how easily doe the water based markers erase if left for several days or weeks? any ghosting?

Hello. I use damp paper toweling when I clean the board, and then wipe with a dry towel. No ghosting, but the red marker can sometimes take a little more rubbing to remove, but not much. Thanks for watching, and best of luck in all your projects.
