This is my favorite "Eggman got betrayed by his minion" scenario, because this time, EGGMAN FIGHTS BACK.
Eggman and Heavy King fighting over the Phantom Ruby and fighting Sonic at the same time is great - letting both of them duke it out for the title of "main villain" of Sonic Mania.
Well Sonic Advance 3 did that, only Eggman teams up with Sonic

@@zephyr8072 Yeah, but he got swatted away and wasn't an actual part of the final boss battle.
Advance 3 is cool too, especially since he's playable, but I mean specifically Eggman AS the final boss alongside the one who betrayed him.
This fight was still a historic first.
It's surprising how Eggman planned ahead for in case Chaos betrayed him and spent a lot of time to build a huge flying fortress just for that, only to get swatted away instantly, while here he built a machine with duct tape out of panic but still fighted one to one against the Phantom King

Back when the first Metroid Prime was being developed, Nintendo started making Metroid Fusion.
Because Metroid Prime was being made by an inexperienced team, they expected Metroid Fusion, the 32-Bit sidescroller to outperform Metroid Prime, the big console launch.
But in the end, it was Metroid Prime which got the most attention, I bring it up because something similar happened here, but backwards.
Sonic Mania was supposed to be a smaller release complementing the big console game, Sonic Forces, but it outperformed that title by a huge margin.

This remembered me of Castlevania symphony of the night, they didn't even think it would be a big a game and we're hyping the playstation release of the new 3D game they'd make would be the big one. Turns out Castlevania SOTN is a hell of a classic game and the Playstation game is pretty shitty

I like how Eggman pushes you back because he knows he just has to delay you until the Super form wears out meanwhile heavy emperor takes a direct approach because he is the stronger one in this scenario.
eggman actually has an attack where he dashes across the screen and can hit rings off of you but people normally hit him before he does it so no one really knows about it

They didn't have to go THAT hard on the boss theme for a zone that lasts less then 5 minutes...
But I'm really happy they did.
But you never know how long the zone lasts. If you notice, the timer is flying all over the place in this battle (just like Sonic).

In the part of the Metal Sonic boss in mania where you need to defeat a bunch of badniks, I'm pretty sure you can see Infinite in the tubes. I might be wrong. This means that both of the best parts arent from Forces

The way Fist Bump is used here kinda makes you feel like Sonic Mania was just an appetizer for the main course: Sonic Forces, but in reality Mania was the main Course while Forces was... the little candy they leave next to the bill
Sonic Forces was the sour gumball in the candy jar of goodness.

The final boss of Mania was truly special.
Sonic defeats Eggman, but the Phantom Ruby becomes unstable! Eggman wants to use it for his Death Egg robot to conquer the world. Heavy King wants it to betray Eggman, and Super Sonic wants it to restore everything back to normal. Sonic fighting Eggman and Heavy King at the same time while they fight each other as well is special because they are sent to this universe that the unstable phantom ruby created, and which ever hands it’s in, can have recasting results.

While I love the idea of a triple threat match for the fate of the universe, I feel like the way they implemented it left much to be desired.
For one, I wouldn't have had the fight take place in such a confined space. The whole thing that makes Super Sonic so cool to play as is how fast he can go and how high he can jump. I would have had the fight be a high speed chase sequence, where it's basically an infinitely scrolling stage with seemingly random platform routes that you have to navigate at high speed to chase the other two down as they fight, wrecking platforms ahead of you as they fight
Second, the golden rule is Super Sonic should always be invincible. Him being able to be harmed by the Ruby was dumb. Instead, he should have been able to take the Ruby, and gained additional power, and that would be when you could do the most damage to both of the others, like you could hold the Ruby for a couple of seconds, but you could fly and smash through the platforms ala S&K Doomsday Zone, and hit the other two as they run away.
The whole point of the Super Sonic Boss Fight isn't to be super challenging, it's meant to be full on power fantasy, you're supposed to just feel insanely powerful and get to stick it to the bad guys once and for all. It shouldn't be completely dull like the Perfect Chaos fight, but it also shouldn't feel like a chore like this fight mostly did either.

It's my personal theory that Egg Reverie and Null Space are the same place, seeing as you're taken there via the Phantom Ruby both times.
It also helps that both had unused assets that indicate that they were supposed to be more than just boss/cutscene material.

Well, in the final battle, Sonic was kind of being made a sandwich by Heavy King and Eggman so this comment still makes sense in the context of the game lol
I always thought this game was a forgotten masterpiece since I havent heard of it for like three years straight. And downloading the game again to finally finish those extra stages and secrets on my own was amazing, I watched into the comment sections and there were so many people talking about it. It never was forgotten.

It is so cool how the Sonic Forces theme is sneaked into this theme hinting that this game and Forces had a connection story wise. Sonic mania hinted this connection so well but sonic forces missed out so badly in their part.
It literally makes you feel like your super sonic beating the crap out of eggman

y'know what would've been cool but hard to code in?
All 3 characters being in the area at once, but not just that, one character would be able to snatch the phantom ruby and get a special attack that they can use that can charge overtime BUT with just one hit from one of the other characters the one that hits them is able to snatch the phantom ruby and have to survive with it on hand until the special attack charges being able to deal some pretty hefty damage.
This is where something like the dash technique would actually be useful, if you are easily hittable by the other characters you could use the dash to get some ground and wait for the ruby to charge at the cost of losing some rings in the progress of dashing adding some sort of risk and reward to the fight, but it also wouldn't be necessary to use the dash every time.
And of course you can also hit the other enemy to stun them for a second allowing you to get the ruby before the current holder uses the special move.
This'd make the fight actually feel like there's 3 people fighting over this power instead of just two dudes taking turns holding the thing and losing it a few seconds after.
I know that it'd be a hard thing to code in but it was just an idea.
Probably the most underrated song in all of Sonic Mania.

People complain that classic Sonic came out of nowhere in Forces, but I disagree. When you beat Egg reverie, you can see Sonic going through some sort of worm hole; a worm hole that leads straight into the events of Forces.

So, that's why i didn't comment on that, because of course Sonic music sounds like other sonic music, and it's more fun to see what kind of comparision someone can make between sonic music (Sonic Mania) and music from a game that it's not owned by SEGA in any way, shape or form (Undertale, in this case).

This music is so fire. This final boss was clearly meant to be more than what they were able to make which is sad. But this boss is super good as is so Im not super upset but, just wish we got to see the full vision of what this finale was gonna be

The piano at the start gives me Sonic Underground vibes, mostly from nostalgia though - looking back over it, it was atrocious. Back to the egg reverie, the hard boiled heavy vocals from High Spec Robo-Go being in this is GENIUS. Overall, while I don't think this is the best final boss track they could've made, you gotta give Tee Lopes some credit for how good this sounds. I mean, just listen at 0:48 - 1:15 and you'll know what I mean.
Both this and The Doomsday Zone are EPIC in presentation and music.

This boss was pretty underwhelming when I got good at it. But now, when I am playing this zone, I mainly focus on dodging and collecting rings, and acting like as if I WAS THE BOSS FIGHT.
A while ago I already did it first try since it didnt seem much of a challenge, because of flight, although I can see why its difficult for some. A great feeling indeed to be powerful.
To be honest acting like YOU are the boss fight is the best thing ever when you get so good at a boss that you beat it very easily if you actually really try
The fight was hard at first since hitting the heavy king was giga stupid until i figured out both eggman and the king spawn from the bottom of the arena

Hmm, I thought about why this song seems so familiar, and finally remembered which vibe the beginning gives me - it's Love Pipe by Red Elvises (Six-stringed Samurai OST).
Fun fact : this big bad robot is technicaly the first in the timeline who discovered a way to actually hurt super sonic.
The big arms fight technically dropped super sonic to the ground but it didn't make him lose rings. Also heavy king hurt super sonic as well
