A Lofted Bed For Our Shipping Container

- Designing small spaces can be a challenge - how much do you leverage vertical space? Is it possible to fit everything you need without overcrowding it? These are the question we are consistently asking ourselves as we design our shipping container house. We went back and forth a lot on how to make the bedroom both functional and beautiful and I think this lofted bed is going to be perfect for our family. We'll have a ton of cabinet space below the bed along with a little nook for our dog to sleep. The stairs are actually storage containers as well and double as a comfy chair.

These containers just go to show that if you are happy with yourself and your partner you can live in any amount of space and be very happy! ❤ I love how you guys interact so much! It has taught me to love on my spouse more and build him up more each and everyday! Thank you for being your true selves! I love you all so much!
This is a fantastic job and I really like the bed I have a 400 square foot apartment and I live with two fur babies and believe they have way too much. 😮
You guys are getting so close just a little bit more.

Lou is super talented and I love how you both come together with ideas. The stairs are much better than the ladders. Plus a seat and storage!! And the hinged door instead of sliding because it's quieter. Little things that make a big big difference. Bless you and thank you so much for taking us on this journey. ❤
Some small handles on the step boxes to slide them around easily looks like a good idea.

When I renovated my van I created separate lounge/activity spaces so I totally relate to what you’re taking about with the idea of creating different ways places to make memories in a small space. Well done Lou on the loft 👏🏼

There's a lot I love about these two, but Lou's determination/drive & Dana's support of him always makes me teary eyed lol
Yay my weekly dose of Max. He's growing so fast. Also WOW Lou, amazing work. I'm not a huuuge fan of everything being wood colored. But I think once the green plants and pictures moves in, it will look gorgeous! And fuzzy carpets on the floor hopefully :D
I live in a self built tiny house and I may be screaming at the video 'Make sure you can sit up in bed with a mattress and a duvet on there!'. Especially as a breastfeeding mama, being able to sit up in bed is so important i find

thanks so much gary!! we were definitely considering doing a window there but then with max we realized it would have to be closed for napping and sleeping and he would probably want to rip the shades down haha so thought lets just make it easier (and cheaper!) to just do the two windows instead of three

That would be an excellent idea and make it an emergency exit window.

Looks so cosy! I dont want to sound like the worried know-it-all guy…just wanted to suggest routering the sharp edge of the windowsill next to the stairs. I know I would hit my head there for sure ^^ Maybe you are already aware of that edge, but from my own building projects I know, sometimes you overlook details you stare at so often… all the best and fingers crossed for a moving date asap :)
I love it, but I think you could lower yhe platform, because when you will put the mattress that will be tight to sit straight on it. Also I think that it will be nicer put a little horizontal window in the nook area. It will be a great idea, put a bed down the platform,, so you can pull out. I love the idea.
I love your little happy dance when you complete a well done job. That fact that you can think and dream of what to design. Dana's face when she saw what hard work you did for your family. Whilst I don’t live in a small space, I don’t have a baby, I’m not hugely fond of stairs (due to 6 orthopaedic surgeries), and I am probably twice your age, there are so many cool things that we have in common. Lou’s skills never fail to impress me but he outdid himself this week showing us his dance floor moves 😄. Seriously though I do admire the way you two plough your own furrow (not sure if that is just a UK saying 🤷♀️) but it means follow your own path and make the most of everything. oo great idea maya!! we have them right now as boxes so when you take the top off you can store things inside. thinking maybe max's toy box? or a extra storage for clothes :)

Our blueberry bushes flourish with lots of sun , and wood chips . We bought 5 different varieties , and of course, fenced them in , with netting over the top.

It's always cool to see someone design something unique and then build it. I always wanted to put a hidden door into my house... like make a bookshelf that would open up to a secret storage room or something... and it's stuff like this that encourages me to try it, you know?

You are so skillful and creative maybe build a loveseat on the other side of the door as you enter, so they did too, if you can sit and watch the fire together and Dana can have the perfect knitting spot. Hi, this is wonderful for a starting point. Looks beautiful and exciting, but how about when the baby gets older? After 5 years and up? How about when a second child comes and possibly a third? Where would you sleep? You may have to make a 2x the space you have to house all of you in the same space with rooms and bathrooms.
Looks very cosy. Invitingly simple. What are you using to seal the wood and help keep the fresh wood look going?

We recently planted five different blueberry patches in different locations and the ones planted near pine trees are the most successful because blueberries like acidic soil.
ooo so appreciate that insight Debra!!! we got some soil acidifier at the hardware store that was designed for blueberries. i dont know if we'll be able to plant any near pine trees. do you have netting around yours? i think we got the patriot variety that is cold/shade hardy xx Dana

I don't understand why the containers aren't connected? They have outdoor space that is cold in winter and to get to each space you need a coat on? I don't understand.

If you make the stairs double the width you could make a sofa and make that a mini living room area

Looking great. My only concern would be the allowance you allotted above the bed frame. Not sure how thick the mattress is and how much space you will need between you and the ceiling? Hopefully you will be able to sit up on the bed. But otherwise it's very nice.
such a good call dawn!! we actually like really thin mattresses - we sleep on a mattress topper so its super firm only a couple of inches think so there's plenty of space for us to sit up :) max can stand right now but im sure before we know it he wont be able to stand up there anymore haha

Frejas nook looks a little bit too narrow but Lou is incredibly crafty
You mentioned the container wasn't level.
I'm surprised you didn't make 6-8 pads of concrete, leveled to each other, for each container to set on as opposed to just setting them on "leveled" gravel. That would have prevented moisture from getting trapped under each container as well.
Is just me or are you going to fit the mattress it through that tiny door???
