We did it!!! We moved into the shipping containers!! I was a little nervous about this big change as it's something we've been dreaming about for many months now. Sometimes when you hype things up, it can put pressure for everything to be perfect, but honestly, the move went so much smoother than I could have expected! Max is thriving up here with a few tweaks to our living situation, making it much easier for me and Lou to do the same. Freja is in her element and has calmed down a bit without all the back and forth.
We still have a lot more work to do on the containers before they're fully functional, but the wall tent allows us a perfect middle ground. We can play outside but in the shade. We can cook and enjoy family meals.
So much joy and relief and excitement to have made the leap! Thank you for all your support this past year. It's been a massive transition for us to start this homestead, and now that we're living here fulltime, it actually feels real!

PS from Lou - Our new compost attracted coyotes almost immediately so we are looking for animal proof alternatives--our goal is to set up some JADAM fermented compost teas in the future but until then we need an intermediate storage system ; )

Rubbing a little bit of plain wax on the sliding gate for the bed will help it move more easily and protect the wood from wearing by friction. Max is lucky to have such amazing parents. Happy Birthday!
WoW… it must be so emotionally charging to feel your dreams, plans, and projects finally become your living space and your home. I can totally connect with the satisfaction that comes from living resourcefully in the wilderness and making things work using your own hands. This lifestyle involves so much learning, trial and error, and celebration of the mini-wins along the way. When you live in the wilderness things such as filling a baby pool, creating a composting system, and living harmoniously with all the woodland creatures require some thought and planning. I found this video very calming and yet highly celebratory to watch, so I cannot imagine how it must feel for the three of you. Your shipping containers have such a solid and warm feel to them, and the wall tent gives that airy summer vibe… this is truly the best of both worlds and I wish you many happy days filled with summer relaxation and togetherness. TIP! If you think it is to heavy/not smooth to push the baby gate try rub a stearin candle on the surface :) It works very well for wooden drawers that are heavy to pull out 🥰

Freya being a good stand for Lou to get back up during the pool filling section and Max being the BEST helper filling it really made my day! All of your excitement is so contagious! It's so amazing to see how far you've come. I've been watching since the video y'all did where you decluttered your room at your parent's house. The Ode times ... seeing the boat and now this build ... it's incredible. We also started making sourdough and I am 100% buying that bread book!

To help the new gate slide better try using some candle wax of any kind on the wood the gate slides on. :)
Each video I enjoy because it is so relaxing and enjoyable to watch. You truly are genuine people and a great family to see. I am thankful for the move finally. Max will definitely be a great chef's assistant and hope there is time for a cookbook by Max at some time in the near future.

I live in Florida...in our compost fruit is not allowed...fruit flies will lay eggs and you will then have a never ending supply of fruit flies...we have meyers lemon trees, olive trees and fig trees...I hope you guys plant an orchard....when my son was very little the seasons passing were watched on those trees. He learned to can because of them.

Growing up my parents had two compost bins in the yard.
It´s so weird but it feels like a tangible shift watching; like you´ve landed.
Once you get chickens/other animals you can start giving your food scraps to them

Save your pee and dilute with some water. Throw on your compost pile. It helps speed up decomposition. Toss woodstove ash on the compost heap also.

Hi, thought I'd pass on a link re your comment about wanting to include Max in on everything... this one's for cooking. It is a link to a Japanese cooking site where they have a brilliant safe highchair/stool thingy to include her (then baby)daughter to both join in/do things with and be safe while she was cooking. It's the first video I could find that had the chair (though I may be wrong). I can remember in one of the first few it was described how it was done. I can remember it was basically two basic wooden Ikea chairs added together (one upside down, with the wood between the legs acting as safe border), but that's all, sorry..
