- The National Mah Jongg League publishes its annual card of valid hands in early April. The rules of the game rarely change, and the way hands are described (i.e., colors, letters, numbers, format) stays the same. The changes are in the shapes and patterns of the hands. In this video, I'll show the results of my analysis of the new card, share actionable insights, and finish with tips for a smooth transition.
CORRECTIONS: 13:20 This is an illustration of Odds #7. At 20:10, I said there are no wind hands in Singles and Pairs, but there are winds in the BIG HAND! Also, at 20:20, I say there are three hands in the Quints category, but there are four. Download the free ebook with the nitty-gritty details (version 20240405.1): tinyurl.com/mvmj7wwm

I am new at this and really love your videos! I have learned so much watching! One question - I think this comment seems backwards a bit. Your presentation at 20:23 shows 4 addition hands but I see only 3 on the card. What am I missing?
@@caronward302 So sorry for the confusion; I corrected the pinned comment with corrections :)

Extremely helpful observations for new and seasoned players. Particularly appreciated percentage breakdown, tiles to pass during Charleston and tiles to discard early, and hands that are more switchable than others. I am much better prepared for my next game of mahjong after watching your informative and encouraging video.

I have been playing online with robots almost exclusivly because I don't have any friends who play, but with your advice I have been gaining confidence to find a group. I have watched a few of your videos. As a former teacher, I commend you on your communication skills.
Excellent, welcome to the game and thank you for your words of encouragement :)
Aughh! I’m at work I want to watch this RIGHT NOW!
LOL I hope you were able to get ti it after :)
Great video as usual. I don't know about you, but the minute i saw this card I was so happy. I love these hands. Even though they use alot of flowers I find these hands will be a pleasure to do since they are easier. It will make it a more competitive game.
Thanks Michelle 👍 😊
It's sincerely my pleasure :)
Great, organized, information.
Thanks, Patricia :)
Thank you- I just wanted to verify I was reading the card correctly! It’s a lot of 7’s.
Wonderful!
Thanks :)
A possible reason for the point difference in CR #8 and Odds #7, is that in the Odds hand you have to use the specific numbers shown. In the CR hand you can use "any" consecutive numbers which may make it slightly easier.
That could be the reason too.
Great stuff!!
Thank you, Griselle!
Great insight❤
Thanks, Kathleen.
Fabulous ❤
Thank you!
Great video. I played the 6th consecutive run and didn't realize it was a quint of flowers. (I need new glasses.) New card users beware!
Thank you for your time in analyzing the card, Michele. I shared your link with my new MJ group. We are all learning. Question: in your analysis, you put in a table that there were 0 math hands last year. Aren't the "Addition Hands" on the 2023 card considered math hands? Like I said, I'm new so forgive me if I'm off base.
I think you say there's no winds in Singles and Pairs, and yet the big hand has winds. I'm so engrossed in what you're sharing that I could be wrong... Thank you!!!
You are right!
🎉🎉🎉
Great video! Very insightful. I have only been playing for a year+. I keep getting hands with flowers and dragons or flowers and winds. Did they ever have hands that use these tiles? Just curious...
I think the point Anomaly in the evens compared to 2023 is because one of the pairs is flowers - and there are eight flowers in the tiles.
I see 4 Quints hands. Am I wrong? I love studying your breakdown. Great tips for a newbie!
Thank you for this! Can you please explain to me what the "fatal errors" with the red circles and lines through are about? I am a brand-new player. Thank you!
Love your analysis; you probably already are aware, but when you are talking in the analysis about the QUINTS category, you mention that there are "three options" in QUINTS. Actually there are four, and if you count the consecutive run #6, there are five.
Thanks, Jeanne. I'll update the ebook and presentation :)
Pung Pair Kong Pair Pung....NY Skyline Hand! NMJL is in NYC.
It seems to me that the last Like Number hand should have been a concealed 30 point hand.
Thank you!

Michele, if a person discards a Joker and names it the tile that was thrown just before, can a person call it and use the Joker only as that designated tile? or is it still basically frozen?
This is just my thought on the valuations. Do you think the 25 point hands in consecutive run with more pairs are valued less than they traditionally would be because they're in consecutive run and because of the flexibility in that section?
There are 8 flowers, more than the number tiles. That may account for the difference in score.
Michele, No one seems to be able to answer directly the following question: can TWO jokers be used to MAKE a pair? Everyone realizes jokers can never be used WITH a pair/COMPLETE a pair, but can two jokers MAKE a pair?
Jokers cannot be used to make a pair. They can be used in a block of three or more identical tiles (e.g., pung, kong).
Where do I find rules for Jokers???? I grew up playing Chinese Mahjong with no Jokers. We used ping for 3 Quong for 4 and chow for runs. How is this different in American mahjong???
Read the bottom section of this wiki article for the differences between American Mah Jongg and Asian versions: mahjlife.com/wiki/american-mah-jongg-article-162/. Here is a list of wiki articles for playing with jokers in American mah jongg: mahjlife.com/wiki/joker-protocols-article-221/ and mahjlife.com/wiki/tag/jokers/
Please explain the Odds #7 distribution that you showed with three sets of 9's. The card said "These Nos. Only". The card reads 55577999, 777,777. But your model shows 55577999, 999, 999. So, how were you able to use 3 sets of 9's?
Is there a rule regarding when each player can rack their charleston -i.e. wait until everyone has their tiles or not?
Perhaps the 3 pair hand was only 25, because there are 8 flowers in the set...not just four as in the suits. ???
Thank you so much for this! I even ordered the Mah Jongg set you recommended. They happen to be having a 50% off sale, so even better!
Under quints line two, it reads any two suits, quints any two nonmatching nos. Any wind. We are told that the quints can't be consecutive??? If it says non-mataching why would this be true! Help
My interpretation of the hand is that you can use any two numbers as long as they are not the same number or the same suit.
I am not sure if anyone mentioned this- but on your presentation you had an example of the concealed hand as :
555 77 999 999 999
On the card it says
555 77 999 777 777 in bracket says these numbers only. Did I miss something?
Yes, this has been mentioned. It's been corrected in version 20240403.1 tinyurl.com/33cv4n4e
Thank you- I just wanted to make sure I read correctly the card- these numbers only.
At 20:23 you say there are 4 addition hands; I see 3 - am I hearing this incorrectly?
There are only three hands, I had a carry-over mistake from last year.
Thank you - this of always so helpful!! 💜
Is there a set you recommend for purchasing?
She recommends WhiteSwan, I bought it & I love it. Click more under video.
Is there a rule regarding when you can rack your charleston; i.e. do you need to wait until everyone has passed their tiles?
There are no rules stipulating when tiles from an incoming pass can be racked. For a smooth process, it's best to wait until everyone has their incoming pass in their hands. Also, it's courteous to wait to give another player an outgoing pass until everyone has racked the tiles from the previous incoming pass.
What is a carry over hand?
I just moved into a senior apartment and cannot find any mahjong players. Any insights on to how to find a local group?
Check your local recreation centers, senior centers, and libraries. Also, if you use Facebook consider posting here: facebook.com/groups/mahjongcommunity/
The first thing I noticed is the omission of a section for scoring. Why?
Scoring, like the rules, rarely change so I only include it if there is a change. Here is a wiki article that documents the process: mahjlife.com/wiki/how-to-score-article-208/
I only see 2 hands with all pairs on singles and pairs
I see that too. Singles and Pairs hands will always have combinations with singles and/or pairs
Thanks!
Thanks!
It's sincerely my pleasure and thank you for the tip!
